🚆 Heavy train in heavy rain (Cab Ride Switzerland | Zurich - Lucerne)

  • Our journey starts in Zurich with a typical summer rainfall, but turns to a nice after-rain scenery soon after. Heavy rain and a quite heavy train (around 710t) don't make a good combination. The acceleration is massively limited in these conditions, but we still reach our terminus on time.
    Locomotive: SLM Re 460 (operated from control car)
    Train stops at:
    00:10 Zurich Main Station
    08:10 Thalwil
    22:00 Zug
    40:20 Lucerne

    Thank you for the wonderful videos! As a frequent traveler to CH for 50 years, I love the SBB, the Swiss scenery and the warm emotions it brings to me. With Covid and the inability to travel, this takes on a huge importance as we grasp and relive our memories of a much better and happier time!

    Great videos - interesting to see a stretch of singled track on what is probably a very busy line (Zurich-Lucerne)

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  Před 5 lety +1

      Indeed, not as busy as other lines (if you want to see what busy means, I recommend the Cab Ride with the S3 service from Zurich to Aarau), but still busy enough and a potential failure point.

    Very interesting lighting in that weather. I assume you managed to stay on time as there was a long station stop in Zug?

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  Před 5 lety +4

      We left Zug a little late, too. But there is a bit of a buffer between Zug and Lucerne, which does help. It only works when the train from the opposite direction leaves on time, since the route after Ebikon (around 35:00) is a single track section. And to be exact: We arrived two minutes late, but everything under 3 minutes is considered on time.

    Pity that you didn't turned on the high beam head lights in the Zimmerberg Tunnel.

  • @AndreiTupolev
    @AndreiTupolev Před 3 lety

    I've just noticed, after watching a few of these videos again, that trains heading north and trains heading south both go through Rotkreuz in the same direction don't they. We're going from north to south and we go through Rotkreuz heading west, and so do trains heading north from Arth Goldau towards Brugg.

    • @HammondDirk
      @HammondDirk Před 3 lety +1

      The station in Rotkreuz is actually laid out East-West, and yes, you can go to Zürich in both directions: to the East via Zug (which is the same direction as Arth-Goldau and the Gotthard, that line crosses above on the viaduct), and to the West via the Freiamt, direction Lenzburg (which splits on the right side to the North when this train continues to Luzern). This way is actually not so much longer due to the higher speeds allowed and is used as an alternative route when there is a problem in or around the single track tunnels between Baar and Horgen Oberdorf. These trains then go non-stop from Zürich HB to Arth-Goldau.

  • @AndreiTupolev
    @AndreiTupolev Před 5 lety +3

    Those long single track tunnels must be a bit of a bottleneck. I suppose it would be very expensive to widen or double it, though.

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  Před 5 lety +3

      Yes, the old Zimmerbergtunnel is a bottleneck, together with the neighboring Albistunnel. It is planned to prolong the Zimmerberg Base Tunnel further from Thalwil to Litti (close to Baar), so all traffic from and to Gotthard and Lucerne would be on double track sections with higher speed limits.
      The following file is on german, but you may use a translator... company.sbb.ch/content/dam/sbb/de/pdf/sbb-konzern/ueber-die-sbb/projekte/Grossprojekte/Bahn_2030/170914_STEP-AS-2030-35_Ausbau-Thalwil-Zug_Factsheet_V6.pdf

    • @samanli-tw3id
      @samanli-tw3id Před 5 lety

      AndreiTupolev I think those tunnels were built as single-track because of geographical reasons.

    • @HammondDirk
      @HammondDirk Před 3 lety

      @@samanli-tw3id When they were built, there was not so much traffic, and indeed, the geography makes it expensive to double it!

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  Před 5 lety

      In the tunnel at the start of the video 160, the rest is anything between 70 and 140.

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  Před 4 lety

      I know your comment was meant as a joke, but still: Braking and tractive force is very limited in these conditions, which requires skill and a very different driving style to master these weather conditions. We don't derail or skid away, like a car would, but it's definitely easier in dry conditions! ;-)
