Big d I'll trade ur alpine 3545 for the xtant amp lmk if ur interested.
Excellent video. I wanted these amplifiers so bad back in the day but they cost more than my car at the time. Polished stainless steel with the brass screen…beautiful! Still one of the coolest style/designs around
They say it’s polished stainless but man it sure looks chrome to me. Maybe a deep polish and clear tho
Lucky you passed on them as they are trash at that price.
I love that Carolyn had a hand in the design. Such a special lady.
Agreed and the world misses her beautiful soul 🙏
WOW!!!!! I REMEMBER THAT MAGAZINE!!!! AND that van with em Cerwin Vega strokers!!!!! Wow....juuuuusT WOW... is all I can say...!!!
😬👍
Yeah, me too, I always wanted a couple of those Cerwin Vegas. I always heard good things about those strokers.
... You really pulled on some heart strings with this video... Thank you, Sir.
You started with the mention of U.S. Amps. I collected some trophies with these as well as MATTS. Sound quality.
Prior to those came the four 2350DM's powering a Cerwin Vega real deal Stroker. One amp, one sub. For Strokers, four amps.
Next up you showed an input panel close up of a JP34ab... OMG!!! I will have two of those arriving next week😁❤️💕😁
On to the XTANT. You really did not drive the point into your viewers heads that all of the options that were available as plug in daughter boards are what is available today out of box from any decent quality amp.
Back in the day this was a one box option that covered all those boxes and rca's we had to deal with.
At the time the concept was greatly MISUNDERSTOOD!!!
The other amplifier manufacturer that was also misunderstood was BLADE.
I haven't finished watching the video yet but I'm very curious to see what your opinion is of the sound quality😁, even though it is a sub amp...
!!!THANK YOU CHRIS St. AUBIN!!!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
So happy to have one of my amps reviewed by you, Big Dummy!! Cheers..
Yeah..that's the first thing customers do when they take their car home from the install shop is Jack up every bass boost they can..then bring it back in 2 days with everything blown up..
Haha, yep, levels so high that even with the volume real low a pop from someone talking on the radio causes the subs to bottom out...
I had a friend with a setup like that, it sounded terrible.
At least with these once installed the customer didn’t have easy access to the settings
I remember back in the late 90s Sony was putting their xplode line in some new cars, they would put rtv, gasket maker on all of the adjustment pots. Those were the days.
When I was installing part of the deal was a conversation that started with somthing like "its your system but your not allowed to touch it" and why..
@@justinhiggins2210 I still do this, and have since the late 90s. I’ve saved many people from themselves lol
I remember back in the day when Xtant amplifiers first hit the market. They were the hot ticket for the SQ guys. I did a full build using Xtant amps and jail audio speakers in a 96 f150 extended cab. It was a stealth install everything folded up in the back seat. The back of the seat was the amp rack the bottom of the seat was the subwoofer box with two down firing 10-in JL audio subs. When the seats were folded up you couldn't tell there was anything installed. It looked like a factory finish seat. Thanks Big D enjoyed the video it brought me back to the day.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
When I had to bench test Xtant amplifiers for my reviews here in Australia in the late '90s the jumper system controlled input sensitivity was a real headache. I had to juggle input voltage to the power supply (via a variac) to get 12 or 14.4V and simultaneously monitor the waveform on the oscope along with the AC voltage on the meter connected to the outputs. Man that was tricky - especially pon the 4-channel! I also remember these amplifiers clipping pretty harshly on the waveform compared to other amplifiers. I was introduced to Jeff Scoon by Mitek owner Lloyd Ivey while at MTX Arizona in Jan 1998. Lovely guy. Xtant stuff certainly was cool and unique back in the day. Nice one Big-D.
Thanks for the info, really cool 😎
Ahhhh the good old "dream magazine's" from back in the day.
Yes! Dream a little dream and wonder how some of these folks had the cheese to do these crazy installs
Those amps were awesome. Great sound quality and power. Looked good as well.
Awesome? $1000 for pin switches?
So this amp was ahead of its time it had the options for everything that comes normally on almost any amp now sooo crazy
I sure miss them car audio magazines ❤️
Agreed!
Oh man that is beautiful!! I had one back in the day for my 1st gen Rockford P3’s!!
Man how the f I miss this upload. Thank big time for sharing
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Beautiful amp… thx for the test
Thanks for watching and commenting!
This was the only amp where the company brought out a rep to train all of us, installers, on how to properly install and tune these things. After a few, you get the hang of it. You start to learn which SIPS to change out and which ones to use. The SIPS are the black crossover components.
Always wondered about those then someone on FB asked the other day, greatly appreciate your videos and bringing old school back into the light
Thanks for watching and commenting!
The right subs and they are nasty!
I had that amp running 2 12” pioneer subs in a custom sealed enclosure in my Nissan truck. It killed. I wish I still had that!!
Awesome 👏
Been waiting to see a xtant amp Dyno good show
👌😬👍
I personally haven't had an issue reading the voltmeter and I LOVE when I can see amperage vs wattage in the same frame. The amp is way cool. I'd maybe even say it looks like a current high endish amp. Very cool n it did well considering how old it is. Cool guts, look, ect ect
Thanks brother 🤙
I remember these amps back in the day. I always loved their design. Never got the chance to buy one though since i was quite content with my soundstream reference 1000s and 500s. Great amps, and i still have both.
Finally Big D got an Xtant! Great video as usual!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I still have a pair of Xtant 8ohm 10s somewhere in a box. They always sounded very clean, in a sealed enclosure. Thanks for giving Xtant some attention.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great video! Loved these amps from my teenage years. I have a few waiting for an old school build. (1) 1001dx, (2) 604x, (2) 3150c, (1) 603x, (1) p500a eq, & a box of SIP chips & jumpers.
Back in the day I had a pair of Xtant amps running McIntosh speakers up front and a pair of PPI flat cone subs in the back of my ‘94 Trans Am convertible. All running through an Audiocontrol EQ. I spent an asinine amount of money, but I was young and stupid. And it sounded amazing.
I must have been an early adopter without knowing it, because I’m pretty sure I bought them in ‘95. They were absolutely gorgeous. Thanks for the review - it really takes me back!
Awesome 👏
Big D for the win! as always, great vid👍👍
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Finally a xtant amp! I miss these old beasts!
😬👍
Great video. I got one of these amps in '99 pushing a pair of JL 10W6 that were in a huge box for some reason. No one really knew anything about the amp at the time including me but it was definitely a hit.. .especially back then. I really don't remember exactly what happened to it. I'd be willing to guess I needed some trunk space after having kids.
I kept my Xtant 403A that was in my truck for 15 years. Still works great. Wasn't the loudest system I had, but it sure sounded good.
Awesome 👏
Over 20 years ago I wanted an Xtant system. The 10’s and subs I wanted along with install was about $2000. Ultimate electronics was the install but I never was able to afford it. But this is awesome!
Ahhh DAM. You’ve done did it. Finally - I loved my 1001. Ran it with a 404. And a 4180 or something can’t remember. But man did I absolutely love these amps. Best looking amps ever made. And if you had the module chips too. I just wish I could have got the 🛑 shaped subs they made. I ran mine with JL 15’s. 2. And alpine deck and ORIGINAL MB Quart mids / highs.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Wow I pass right by Elite Audio on a regular basis. Gonna have to stop by and check them out.
Absolutely love all the old School Xtant Amplifiers😃
😊👍
These amps were the precursor to the JL Audio Slash amps. Used to work with these a lot when I was working with Mitek back in the mid 2000’s.
We used to have massive supplies of the sip chips. Have the later model the X1001 in storage.
Xtant was the deal 👌 back then. Had some Hexagon 12's on 500rms, superb accuracy
I have the 10's hexagonal's in my 97 mustang Cobra. Self made custom box, bass vent tuned to 46hz per Xtant suggestion when Jeremiah (Xtant) and I used to talk
@@alkosmo2692 Awesome 👌 to hear Bro... I got my Xtant 12's at Audio King 🤴 lol out of biz now... built a 40ish hz box... pounded them daily for a few years. Until getting groceries ended up pulling a RCA partially out and smoked the coils hard. So yah great subs of yesteryear 👍😊
Very interesting amp, both in the looks and lay out. But awesome power it put out also :)
👌😬👍
That name instantly brought back late 90s Termpro Website vibes.
I had a 300 or a 500 back in the day. Had it on two 10s in a bandpass box, and boy did it pound. Got a lot of headaches from police pulling me over. Man have times changed.
Williston I had an Xtant 10” hexagon sub a few years ago I wish I still had it cuz I’d have sent it to you. It was a monster of a 10” it was from prior to the MTX buy out.
I wanted one of these beautiful bastards so bad! But even at $850 (discount etc) it was too much for my income. I'm glad someone was awesome enough to loan it.
Thanks for sharing!
I remember that build with the Strokers in it. I saw it in other magazines back in the day.
I’ve been waiting for an Xtant to go on the dyno. I’ve been wondering about the 3300C because it’s rated at 600 watts with 120 amps of fusing. Very interesting and informative video.
Oh man that one could be underrated for sure!
Cool amp! Piece of history.
For sure!
Rockin the 202m bridged onto a 12" sealed sub.... Sounds epic
I'm doing a build with a 1001 dx and a 604x on a JL 13w3-2 with 2 pairs of old school 6.5 JL xr components with audio control eqx and epicenter. Yeah I know it's cheating but sounds good! The amps are complicated especially the 604x. It's been 20 years since I've had them hooked up. Looking forward to completing it. Thanks for the video. As always you learn something.
Wonderful amps..I had the 3 channel.a buddy still has it
👌😬👍
I have this exact amp amoung other Xtants. I used this one to power 3 MB quart reference 10's in my Expedition for about 10 years, never any issues. I retired the amp (stored in a box) and reduced the size of my system to meet wife's demands 😞
I also have the 604 (larger 3 channel or 5 channel with the module) never used
Thanks D, good history on these
Thanks for the feedback 👍
Reminds me of all the BMW's in the 90's car audio mags sporting Xtant amps and JL Audio subs in a stealth install.
Nice!😎👍
I sold mine not to long ago. Clean power big bump.
I had one of these on 2 solobaric L7. First year of the square ones. Great amp.
Awesome 👏
Nice indeed
👌😬👍
Your final thoughts really sum up what installers feared back in the day. Great content, sir!
Classics ftw 👍
Yeah boi
One thing I noticed I like to see a huge jump in numbers for dynamic power but I swear all the best sounding classics have a very tight regulation…the Xtant the JL slash the PPI art series those are my favorites on original W6 subs…
I have a MINT one these in my FJ cruiser amp#28 off the production line , with a Balanced Line module and an LQF45 Boost Module , putting it to one Resilient Sounds RS12 Gold, Still HITS HARD , and Cleaner than Most everything on the market
I met Jeff and his business partner and saw that Vette at a shop in Chandler, AZ in 96. It was very nice.
Awesome 👏
These are some of the easiest amps to work on but they didn't and still don't come in for repairs very solid numbers I like everything about them.
I got one new in the box with the white sticker still covering the shine😊
I had some Xtant 4 channel back in the day. 4180c. Had it running some Focal's in the kicks and a 15w4. It worked well for the show I did. I guess this has to of been 1886 maybe.
i had a 3300c back in the late 90's. loved it on the 2 jl 12's
thinking it was back in 96 when i got that system. 18 years old. lol
Awesome 👏
Big D, U Da Man!
Aue, do u remember the "SHERWOOD". amps from back in the day? One of my very first systems '89-'90, I had a dookie-brown '82 Riviera with the crushed-velvet pillow seats. I had two 4-channels and an X-Over. One was bridged to push a pair of Pyramid 15's and the other took care of some Phase Linear 4X6's in the front doors and good ol' 6X9's in the rear deck. Literally every piece of trim vibrated like rocks in a tin can.
Buddy had one of these on 3 JL W6 12" when it came out. Very powerful amp at the time. We tried very low ohm connection by adding a box with a couple of 10" subs that we were putting in his GF's car to see what they sounded like added to the 12's. It didn't complain and put out more power as the 12's were moving more with the 10's hooked up than without. Not sure now that it was the smartest thing to do but at the time people were saying that they were like the old cheaters and would handle it. Don't know if that was ever true but we figured it wouldn't hurt to try.
😬👍
I have an old 4 channel I never sold, glad for that - it’s cool just seeing it, prob should put it in a car & not just keep as closet decoration.
Not cheap but beautiful!!!
i owned 2 of these one smoked the first week. best sounding cleanest amp i ever heard but if you used them to push subs hard they didnt last long.
I remember back in maybe 99, there was a guy running 6 of these. I think he was running Volcano subwoofers, but it has been a couple of days since then.
😬👍
Shout out to Elite Audio… thank God someone else decided to broaden their horizons other than me and offer NOT JUST car audio
I run this amp today with a 4180c , love em..
Awesome 👏
@@wal2 I've got a X1001 also, would you like to dyno it?
Brantley and Martin also had Ultimate Audio they used to make UNREAL 🤬!!!
🤷♂️
Back in the day always dreamt of owning one of those but the service never gave me enough time or money. Good to see I would've gotten my money's worth
👌😬👍
I have one of these sitting in my garage with 2 JL Audio 10w3s in a box that I have nothing to do anything with… currently running a single 13TW5 with a PDX-5. I have the module and base knob too.
I recently had the pleasure to repair an xtant 2140c. When I was first handed it I had never heard of xtant. Once I got it working I could immediately tell it was something special. I even tried to buy it off the guy who I fixed it for.
He told me he killed it in the late 2000's running it at 1 ohm but it took it for over a year.
👌😬👍
Do you still repair AMPS? Where do you live. I have a 1990s Soundstream 1000S needs repair and an new Zapco too. Thanks.
Had an Xtant 4180 back in the day. Really clean sounding and plenty of power, but having to remove the cover to make any adjustments was a bit of a pain. While it was purdy as heck, it was more complicated than I preferred. Unfortunately, my whole system was stolen. But with my Xtant 4ch gone, it gave me reason to reinstall my Zapco, which I still have to this day. Between the 2 brands, I ultimately prefer Zapco (the Z series).
Xtant made somw amazing amps
👌😬👍
I wanted these amps at one time but went with other power. Nice looking amps.
👌😬👍
@@wal2 I was told they are the Cadillac of mtx. MTX made them??Hmmm
My cousin had this amp in 2000 in a tahoe with 2 15 jl man that sounded good
😬👍
I remember that issue!!!!
👌😬👍
I’ve been waiting on an Xtant dyno test since god’s cat was a kitten! Thank you!!!
Yeah boi
7:38 two things I see here, before getting to the results, that I like; 1) the coil, 2) the fan and boxed cooling solution for the highest heat generating components.
😬👍
@@wal2 Lol, that emoji. So, the fan is a good and bad idea. If it fails, you might not know it until it's too late. Good, makes for a compact design, and less hefty chassis.
I owned this amplifier.
Awesome 👏
Был у меня 4180х, один из лучших автомобильных усилителей по звуку
Am I the only one that paused the video so I could try to read the articles and see the vintage ads when Dereck was flipping through the magazine? I used to love Car Audio & Electronics, I wish they were still around.
I’m working on scanning and archiving the magazines and will put them online when I get a few years complete
@@wal2 OMG!! You’re my hero! I’m really looking forward to that!!
A buddy of mine Competed in the IASCA world championship running Xtant/Eclipse gear. Those Xtant amps were SQ greatness!!! Just be careful you don't get a runaway strand of wire on the amp....
Yeah those terminals were WaY too close!
I had one of these amps but used and broken all that was broken was the rcas but I never got it fixed just lugged it around n threw it away at the end… I really loved the style of there subs too never had any
Yeah that looks like a very delicate RCA setup.
Wowwwww bro I just seen that the rcas are soldered directly to the board that’s why mine was broken off now I know why they broke off I threw away a beautiful peice of history I feel like shit now
Was way more than I could afford, but they were nice to look at and wish I had one
Me as well
I remember back in the day around 98, heard 4 vega stroker 18 in a clam shell do a 158. something. 4 huge us amps, it was the first big system i ever heard, got back in my extended cab s10 with 4 12s on 2 kenwood 1028's and was like what.
👌😬👍
Full bridge .. did not know that I could be seeing that wrong but nice still
This amp really loved stray wire strands.
Awesome. I have a 4 ch NIB. Be nice if a guess speaker could be found for a bit of history
Thanks for the suggestion
Is there a big difference between the 1000dx and the X1001 in power or are they still pretty close? And thanks for the dyno tutorial it's been a long time coming. Great job Big D!!
Interesting fact. Mtx bought xtant. Closed it down a few years later. Used their filtering tech in the newer amps (x thunder and so on)
I remember this brand of amplifiers, but never saw one in person.
Me too neither 😊
I was asked to service and tune one of the Precision Power Astro vans hand painted by Carolyn Hall Young.
Oh wow!
Back in 1999, I managed a Audio/Performance/Automotive repair shop. Advanced Auto, Audio, and Electronics. Xtant was one of our lines along with Coustic, JVC, and MTX. Believe it or not, I sold WAY more Coustic than I did Xtant.
I believe it!
I'm sure. Cost less. That's the same as Burger King saying I sold more dollar sandwiches than I did Whoppers today
@@shonuff4377 actually back then Coustic made quality gear. I sold a ton of it because it was the best bang for the buck. Pun intended.
@@NDColorado2023 I never said anything negative at all about Coustic. All I said was it was cheaper.
Coustic pro logics?
Interesting the edge blade connector on the PCB that can handle all in/out/power. Maybe intended for a daughter board?
Great video I remember back in the 90s in Arizona one of the dealers at a audio shop called audio Plus run this amp off of every speaker in their test room without a hiccup it was way down below a quarter ohm and then he directly shorted positive and negative with a screwdriver and it turned right back on.. those were his selling tactics.. definitely a very cool amp..
Do more videos where you show the old magazines !
I usually show screenshots in the videos from the magazines
Thanks big d wiz I always wanted to see an xtant amplifier on the dyno!
I wonder obviously the designers are really intelligent people,so why the power inputs so close? And the fork style connectors do they come in heavy duty styles?
God bless y’all!
The power inputs SUCK! I was told these went from design to manufacture VERY quickly so they likely skipped a few steps
@@wal2 I mean those inputs were pretty par for the course back then. Until JL Audio, Kicker and Rockford started doing the recessed separated power inputs.
