I've felt like dating apps in general have degraded our social skills anyway to the point where men are now just afraid of not having that perfect opening and not being instantly charming and funny, so they end up either going for extreme openings which would cross the line somewhere or just not saying anything. Women just don't have to put much effort in collecting matches so they end up with low effort profiles and conversations instead, if they unmatch one guy, there's three more to take his place so it's just teaching them that men are expendable and not worth the effort. To be fair, I have seen a lot of shit that some men send to women on dating apps and I can't really blame them tbh, it's those guys poisoning the well for the rest of us.

Of course always reword things in your own words but as someone who went from 0 likes before consulting ChatGPT, to now getting at least one like a week, I can say ChatGPT helpped me express myself for my bio in a way that was actually appealing to women.
Its not like I made the AI do everything for me, I had a conversation with it and we both helpped to pick out things I wished to highlight and it gave me the confidence to think the super nerdy things Im into arent actually deterrents to the other sex.
Have you ever tried to twist video games and model building into something women can appreciate? I have and before ChatGPT it got me radio silence. Now I can find the words to explain to someone in a short bio why my hobbies arent just "traveling" and "going to the club". AND IT WORKS FELLAS! As someone who lives in Portland, it's very clear that the issue with Oregon is that they never actually implemented any support for addiction or mental health to go along with the decriminalization, and the average drug addict can't just pay a $100 fine. It was obscenely poorly executed. Now it's going to push back any progress because 'we tried it and it didn't work'.

I live in Oregon and I'm also a recovering addict with 4.5 years sober.
This measure failed because Oregon REFUSES to create proper infrastructure for mental health and addiction treatment. There have been multiple opportunities through the years for this state to beef up the recovery infrastructure and yet that money gets pocketed every time. There was a scandal recently at a facility where the counselor was caught buying drugs from clients and many members of upper management sleeping with clients as well.
Its particularly frustrating as someone who has been through the system Oregon does have in place and had it not been for my private health insurance, I would've never gotten the sufficient services I needed. OHP will send you to the absolute WORST facilities in order to benefit off kickbacks.
We have a solution. We know that criminalizing addicts does not help them in the long run. The problem lies with everyone being either unwilling or inable to flesh out that plan other than just "lets throw money away". Its beyond frustrating.

Yeah but it's a matter of public safety as well. I agree with you, more treatment facilities, good ones, are needed, but have you seen what Portland has become over the last few years? Something needs to be done. And addicts need to be removed from the streets for everyone's safety, including theirs. Ideally, they would be sent to rehab but if not possible, then yes, prison will have to do. Hopefully, they'll be able to use programs to help them deal with their addiction while they are in there. But public safety needs to come first.

But then again it also comes down to the nature of the break up and as you mentioned, how you feel about the person and relationship.

Spreadsheet dating. AI literally gratifies all the prerequisites to modern dating.

In Canada we had this advertisement campaign in the 90’s about the Canadian House Hippo. The goal was to help teach media literacy and to not believe everything that one sees on TV.
It really helped, at least for me, to develop a level of skepticism from what was on tv which later turned into skepticism about things on the internet.
It honestly is shocking that many people do take things at face value like it was the 1950’s watching the news.

I live in Portland, Oregon, and these last three years have been awful and terrifying. You have no idea how many people you see on just one block; on a bad day you can see 10-15 people doing fentanyl, tranq, and I don't know what else out in the open, out of their minds on drugs. I had a drug addict steal my leftovers after I told him I don't carry cash, and I wasn't going to go to an ATM to get him money. I am in a wheelchair, and I was terrified.
The lack of addiction resources is part of the problem of decriminalization in Portland. Addiction resources, clean injection sites, rehab, etc., that are all part of the Nordic model that Portland wanted to copy but just decided "nah, let's skip all the hard parts, we just wanna decriminalize it."
Decriminalization does not help people dealing with addiction. At least not here.

I see what you’re saying and I’m tempted to agree, but as someone who really values truth and authenticity I can’t imagine I’d be comforted by a breakup message the person breaking up with me didn’t even write. They may agree with what was generated but it’s not their words and they could be sending something that sounds nice but is untrue or, at worst, an out right lie. People show a lot of themselves with the language they use and when you use a generated narrative it’s no longer your narrative, it’s the AI’s. I’ve been ghosted with no explanation by people I’ve loved dearly and I think if I were given an ai generated response and I knew about it I’d be more insulted than if they just showed me exactly who they are and disappeared entirely.
I think it’s very tempting to mask our anxiety and get around it, but the truth is doing that doesn’t make us better people for ourselves or others. Avoidance may feel better than facing a problem head on but it really just serves to make the problems bigger and you don’t learn much besides how to be more avoidant and self serving in the long run. I’ve had severe anxiety my whole life and I don’t like the implication that acting on that anxiety is in anyway selfish, but often times it’s true. It’s just as important to live a life in service of bettering others as it is to respect your own boundaries and needs. You need both to live a balanced life.

As a resident in Oregon, I don't think decriminalizing drugs necessarily increased drug use, but I do think it increased the visibility of drug use. Oregon has always had a drug problem, and Portland, especially, has always had a crime problem (In the late 1890s the state department issued a travel advisory to Portland because young men kept on getting drugged and kidnapped and sold to ships). I do think it's good that the bill is pushing people to treatment, but at the same time I think there are more systemic issues within Portland and the larger state that push people to drug use, such as housing costs and a lack of community. I don't think that just sending someone to rehab will necessarily cure them without fixing the larger issues that drive people to addiction in the first place.

I can call the cops on a guy who is mixing his drugs on one of my store outside tables and trying to offer it to people walking by only to be hung up on by the non emergency dispatcher or laughed at by the cop "Well its not legal for him to have it anymore." Or when a woman is coming In and throwing chairs and screaming, when I call for her to get some kind of help, "Well we will turn her loose at an ER."

I voted for the first decriminalization bill and all I have to say is it could have worked if the state actually followed said bill in ANY way beyond the initial decriminalization. Instead they made it so the police didn’t want to do anything at all and no one took up the treatment since they weren’t being offered it. They put more money into homeless sweeps than they did actual drug addiction treatment yet they wonder why this went to shit so fast that actual children are getting fentanyl contact highs. Homelessness among children is sky high at a time where we just lost a whole school building to an ice storm. "but if you're a man on the app who feels like you never really even get a shot, you'll take any help you can get."
Sure, but the issue isn't necessarily about words. Men struggle with online dating due to two things. #s, and the rigid standards women have. Women are a lot "choosier" when it comes to picking a partner. 80%+ of the female population is only interested in the top 15-20% of the male population(only talking hetero males/females). Men in particular generally only care about two things. Physical attraction, and personality. And on the physical attraction, most men are willing to concede. So long as she's moderately attractive in his eyes, then that's fine. So most men are attracted to a much larger % of the female population than the other way around. And most women meet that standard.
Women's standards for men though are much higher. There are evolutionary reasons for this, but that's another discussion. Most have a height requirement, and statistics show that the height requirements women have for men automatically eliminate more than 80% of men in the eyes of more than 70% of women. So if you're short, you're already going to be very limited in your options. Unless you have money. That's the other big thing women judge men on. Finances. If you don't have good finances, as a man your options are going to be very severely limited. Even if you're tall. Physical attraction(body & face) comes in third. Most men do not meet these requirements. Most women don't either to tell the truth...many of these women wouldn't date themselves if they were men, but that's another discussion altogether. Point is, if you're short and poor, there isn't anything AI can do for you. That man is out of luck and isn't going to get many matches, no matter how much he fluffs up his profile. Women can be convinced if the man is smooth enough, but that's not workable via online dating apps. A man who is smooth and can sell himself despite his "shortcomings" can meet women in real life and use that skill, but it doesn't translate to online dating. That man will instantly be judged for being short and having no money online, while in real life he might be able to convince a woman to overlook these things.

There are, quite literally, people dying in the streets. The way the Measure was written it made it sound like there would be jail consequences or rehab. The idea that they would do a fine, that an addict couldn't pay anyway, or giving them a phone number?!!! I know for anyone not living here this can look like just a bunch of confusion. However, as someone who lives here and is a HUGE advocate for people suffering from addiction, this is the best option for now. I am just worried that the jails cannot handle it. As an Oregon resident, I'm conflicted. We are a state of half-assing it. Our homeless crisis was heavily funded so the homeless had resources -- we spent it on buying a few run-down hotels, and putting boulders on many areas surrounding the highways to keep people from camping there.
The decriminalization was passed, some places like NARA got additional funding, but nothing encouraged addicts to seek help. The cops were too lazy to do their part in handing out fines, the treatment centers had trouble getting neighborhood approval to be built, and those that did pop up kept getting push back from residents in the area.

Online dating, people won't even talk to other people unless they check off a long list of requirements or standards. They're unwilling to lower their standards or concede some things. So they go from one person to another, putting in little effort and never truly getting to know somebody or build a real connection.
When you meet IRL, you develop the connection first. You probably aren't going on a date with somebody unless you first had a conversation and realized you had chemistry, which is something you can't gauge online. Then you go on dates and get to know the person before you know everything else about them. So by the time you realize they may not meet some of your requirements, it doesn't matter as much, because you already like the person and you realize that you like them enough that those other things no longer seem as important. My wife, I never would have dated her if I'd met her online. She wasn't necessarily "my type". She didn't have the same hobbies, etc etc. I'm pretty sure the same could have been said in reverse. Yet we met at a bar, and we talked, and we had a great conversation even though we were strangers and developed that instant connection. So we exchanged phone #s, started texting and went on an official date a couple of days later. This kind of thing is happening less and less. And today people are too stuck on having a long list of requirements and standards that few people can truly live up to...many of these people wouldn't even date themselves if they were a man/woman. And they're constantly being told to "level up" and "get that bag", and that compromising on standards or lowering some standards is somehow a bad thing. Everybody is trying to date 9s and 10s, while they themselves are 5s and 6s. And there's nothing wrong with being average. But everybody thinks they're special and that they will only date if the person they date is special. Companionship evidently means nothing anymore.

But criminalizing possess will only push the suffering further into the shadows and make it even harder for people to seek help.

I didn't get the courage to start dating until right before the pandemic and I've only done online (I'm not good at just going up to people and talking and being gay doesn't make it easy to ask out random strangers). The thing that makes me lose my mind is when I get matches who WILL NOT contribute to a conversation. It's one-sided and I'm usually the only one trying to get to know them. Which makes me think, "Are they not interested in me? Then why did they match? Do they just not understand how to be social? Am I missing some kind of code?"
This is literally going on right now. I matched with a guy on one app, talked a bit, and then got tired of being the only one asking questions, then stopped. But I ended up liking him on a different app before. Then he matched with me and I'm like, "Oh, I'm surprised you matched with me again. I didn't get the feeling you were interested." And he's like, "Oh sorry. I 'm just not good at messaging back on time." Not the issue, but sure. So I ask him a question, another close-ended answer and then silence. WHAT AM I MISSING!!!?
If A.I. will help people show that they are interested when they actually are, like giving conversation ideas or asking really good relationship questions like "How do you process anger?" then I'm for it. Otherwise, it can't get much worse.

In my experience, dating apps are already very dehumanizing. I've struggled with dating all my life, and initially, I thought dating apps would help out a lot. But after using various different apps over ~7.5 years of on/off, it has left me emotionally drained. For me, I was basically throwing away time and money just to basically feel awful and insecure about myself and my worthiness of love and affection, to the point where I have sworn off online dating all together like a bad habit. Throwing AI into this god awful mix is only going to make it so much worse of a mess.

No one in this county put emphasis on the REAL work need for Mental Health. It's forgotten and misplaced with the focus on voting dollars and empty words of making a better community. When the real help is yearning and neglected. This country is severely lacking in its focus for mental health when it comes to the drug epidemic. I'm right there with you, Phil. I met my husband online in an age where online dating was considered weird and 'not a real relationship'. I feel like what the dating scene is missing nowadays is exactly what AI is helping to take away: that sense of originality and sincerity. Nerds back in the day found love by hanging around in chat forums and connecting with other nerds, all of which did not know how to talk to people and it was very awkward and embarrassing sometimes. It feels like today's culture is so anti-cringe that people are afraid to be themselves and be genuine about it, leaning more into being like everyone else in fear of doing or saying something they'll be made fun of for. It works in the opposite direction, too. People have stopped appreciating each other's awkwardness and have taken to posting other people's private responses with the intent to make fun of them, which feeds into that fear of being mocked online. We need to drop the AI nonsense and ease back on cringe culture. Let nerds make awkward pick up lines that are vague references to their favorite shows in the dms of gaming forums again.

Online dating is so draining, honestly. Nothing is real, people make up their entire lives & personalities just to get a match or a date, and you end up realizing you know *nothing* of that person, a few weeks or months later.
I stopped using apps a year ago, and i don't miss it at all. The connections I've made through other channels - either irl or through regular social media - have been SO MUCH BETTER.
Online apps don't portray the energy of someone, like real life, and we also don't get caught up in superficial bullshit, like we do on apps.
Someone might not catch your eye on Tinder, and still be a phenomenal person

    • @turinturambar347
      @turinturambar347 Před 3 měsíci +1

When you meet IRL, you get to know the personality of the person first, and see if there's chemistry, and when you build up that chemistry, suddenly those lists and requirements and standards mean less. When people use apps, they treat dating like a shopping list. It's mechanical and not realistic. So many people on these apps wouldn't even date themselves if they were the opposite sex. But they have such high and superficial standards, because they're constantly being told "level up", "get that bag", "never settle". They see it as settling if you talk to somebody who doesn't meet some ridiculous salary requirement, or if they're a couple inches too short, or a few pounds too heavy, or don't have all the same hobbies and interests or you don't agree on every single political talking point. They value these standards more than the person. It's fake and unrealistic. Your person who is right for you might be shorter than you'd like. The person might not be rich. They may have hobbies you don't understand or might dislike some of your hobbies. They might have disagreements with you on some political viewpoints. They may be a little heavier than you're used to. Getting out there in real life and having conversations with people, you meet people for who they are, not their stats. And then you realize those things were never as important as you thought they were. Because ultimately you're looking for companionship, and intimacy, and many people can be good for you in these regards even if they didn't meet your requirements.
I've been married for 12 years. My wife and I never would have considered each other if we were doing online dating. We wouldn't have given the other a chance. But we met at a bar and struck up a random conversation and really enjoyed talking to each other. The chemistry was obvious. So we exchanged #s, texted for a couple days and went on an official date and the rest is history. This youngest generation doesn't know how to do that anymore. Everything is online for them. They have infinite options, but are lonely...

I can say after reading books on mental and relationships, my personal preference is that dating apps make for not so genuine relationships. When people go into dating apps they're more focused on being in a relationship. Rather than enjoying the time with a person. It's usually better when the individuals meet in public due to common interests. And text messaging take away from that in person communication. You can say whatever you want over text, but it's different in person because you can immediately reciprocate to the conversations you have.

Wow, this was a stacked show! Showcasing the trends of celebrity obsession and misinformation, national divisiveness, coverage of the "business of relationships" and using tools to improve your efficiency! At least you got to start with the BAMF.
The AI Dating stuff, it is incredibly sad that people have come to rely on tools to date rather than actually socializing. Using AI generative text to speak for you rather than learning through your mistakes. The fact that meeting someone has become as stressful as interviewing for a new job is ridiculous.
At least the people "dating AI" know they are. They have chosen to be there, and may have found some solace in the connection to the machine. As unhealthy as it is to become obsessed with the AI responses, it is likely something that could be an astounding therapeutic tool to assist people in becoming more adept in their social skills. I've "talked" to AI in an attempt to see if the conversational tones are even remotely "good". I cannot say that I find the response to feel "genuine". Even when the tone is there it is still cold and calculated.
I hope that the people so reliant on these tools can learn to identify themselves, and deliver that identity to the world around them. Peoples opinions be damned. If we can't get back to a point where we can tolerate each others differences, we're doomed as a species.

My first thought with that AI dating app story was Hitch's conversation with Allegra Cole at the end of Hitch asking would she have even given the time of Day and explaining what he does to help guys. AI would be Hitch in this scenario.
And yes, I know it's just a movie, doesn't make the sentiments any less true.

Regarding the Oregon law: what a lot of people forget is that correlation does not equal causation. Just because the drug death increased does not mean the new law was the reason why. The world is more complicated than that after all.

I found my wife online like Philip DeFranco said, back when it was weird, but I also remember watching a Tedd Talk from back then with a statistician looking for love who used her knowledge to breakdown what is 'The best profile' and found out exactly how long the profile had to be, what information should be included in it and what photos to use and what should be in them. She said the number of hits she got jumped dramatically after the change and she ended up finding her husband that way. So we can talk about how AI could ruin dating or how people should be more authentic online but we also have to be honest with each other and not simply swipe left because they are wearing crocks or because their profile is too long or too short or because their favorite pass time is doing their taxes
