It was an extremely gripping statement lol

I was the "girl from New York" 28:02 in the Today show interview. I talked about having a car and getting classes is an unnecessary cost with Student Loans and rent. The interview also edited out me talking about the US need for high speed rail and walkable communities. Also UPDATES I got my license in March, job paid for classes... still no car
I gotta know, are you a regular Phil watcher? I don't know how I'd react to seeing myself at random like that. 😁💚

Dude, you're a BAMF for showing up here. Mad love ❤️

Something about a car.
My dad had a 7th grade education. He was born in 1940 under HEAVY corporal punishment. He raised 4 daughters and 2 sons. He never once laid a hand on me. And he always stated, loudly, that you should NEVER hit a child in the face. Ever. Imagine your reaction as an adult. Now make yourself tiny and imagine your loved one doing it to you. If that man with no education, nothing but what he had observed, knew that then there is no excuse.
As we talk about in the video Philip clipped when discussing this (though not in the clips he pulled), heavy corporal punishment, delayed punishment of any sort, and abuse in general is heartbreaking and we're so glad your dad didn't practice any of that. Even light physical reorientation like what we practice with some of our kids isn't appropriate for every family or every kid, as we also discuss in our video. What people miss, however, is that parents are always choosing between evils when engaging in discipline, and sometimes light physical reorientation is the least painful method available.
Wild to see these natalist weirdos in the comments defending their behavior. What a time to be alive.
@@SimoneandMalcolmA 2 year old getting “bopped” in the face, as you put it, is wild. Plain and simple. To not even stop for split second and wonder, “Hmm, is the restaurant table just worn over time?” or, “Well, he’s 2 and accidents are _bound_ to happen…” is ridiculous. And since you brought race into it in your “addressing” of the situation, I’m AfroLatina. I’m 37 and grew up getting spanked. My own Mother has apologized for it despite me never fearing her hands. I WOULD have, however, had she hit me in my face for _almost_ knocking a table over. My adult Sister on the other hand still resents her for it. Even with my Sister and I having the same experience with our Mother, we clearly have wildly different feelings on the matter. I’m sure your kids will when they get older as well. Getting “bopped” for even the most simple of mistakes, would have absolutely led me to go no contact with her as soon as I could. Even crazier still is that the table didn’t even fall and he still got hit. Oh sorry, “bopped”. If any of your kids grow to resent and go no contact with you for “corrections”, “redirecting” or whatever else you wanna call it and you wonder why, pull out a mirror.

@@Friedom97 Bro you must be heartless, I could feel sm emotion in her tone
BRO 😂
A friend of mine was in an abusive guardianship. She was diagnosed with mild autism and instead of her parents getting her the help she would need to navigate life, they shopped around for a psychiatrist that was willing to declare her unable to make her own decisions and care for herself. They then took her wages from her minimum-wage job ensuring that she would be unable to get an attorney to fight it. They restricted travel, confiscated her phone and essentially disabled all her contact with the outside world except her work - so they could continue to steal her wages.
Getting her out took years and involved multiple friends pooling money for a lawyer on her behalf, intercepting mail and a midnight "out of the window and down a ladder" escape. She's free and safe now, and fully no contact with her parents.
Holly hell thats insane. & i thought i was pissed with my mom. Really puts everything in perspective. Thank you for informing on this
She's lucky to have you and your pals as friend. I'm happy you were able to get her out of there.
There is so much fighting against people wanting to have kids. Between healthcare, high death rates and in general the dating scene being hell because many people just believe women don't deserve to have any rights. Not even speaking about the high prices for daycare and general expenses to have a child. As someone who really wants children, it feels like the world is yelling at you to have children but at the same time stopping you at every turn when you do want to have children.
It's not about having children per se. It's having a dozen of them for no reason other than a weird belief. And _then_ treating them like livestock and "bopping" them.
And leave you ressourceless when you do have them!
There's also the issue in a lot of states of maternal mortality (already ridiculously high in the US) going up after the most recent rounds of anti-abortion stuff. It's currently easier (and safer) to get sterilized than it is to roll the dice on a pregnancy

I have a 17yr old and 16yr old. I bought them a car and paid for driver’s ed. They still have absolutely no interest in continuing to get their licenses and driving on their own. I have definitely noticed this becoming more and more common with younger people
Well if they're lucky enough to have their car paid for them, there is still nowhere to go because most others their age don't have money (not enough jobs around :D everything is low wage anyway) or a car to drive to some expensive third place. Car + insurance + living costs, after graduating high school, that's all most can afford these days. Maybe saving for a house or land if anything, almost seems like slavery no? People shouldn't need a car to hang out and meet others their age, otherwise enjoy Gilead.
Man, that girl in New York explained things reaally well.
😂😂
very eloquent
It's funny because really if you are going to live in NYC why would you have a car?
Someone else found the audio:
Interviewee: "It's like $500 for three (drivers ed) lessons."
Reporter: "And that's part of the problem, it's too expensive right?"
Interviewee: "It's way too expensive. Even if I was able to afford a car. Note on top of my rent, do I have money for insurance? Absolutely not."
Yeah, she was so elegant with her words.
Damn that girl had a some solid takes on car culture. I’m about as speechless as she was.

Public transportation is absolutely horrible. I used to have to take the bus to work, and it turned a 30-minute commute into a 2-hour ordeal. Never getting rid of my car. Lol
I wonder why it is bad in the US but pretty decent in other parts of the world (Europe, Japan, China, etc.)?
@@flytyme because of the oil industry. Also the societal and cultural emphasis on individuality over community. Everyone owning their own car is wasteful, sensless and expensive, but the oil companies have convinced people it’s ”the American way” so now it’s ”you can’t take my car!!!i don’t care if the world burns! I don’t want no trains the public transport is shit!” -mentality.
So yeah, easy to see the difference.
@@kailovipartly correct but the individualism part isn’t fully accurate. There are many places in North America where public transit is bad/nonexistent. How do you expect someone to get to work in those places? Why should they have to travel for hours when driving is significantly less time? So if they start at 8 they can either leave at 5:30 or 7:30 (approx timings). Which would you choose? Especially if you have kids to get to school? What about after work? Finish at 5. You can either be home at 5:30 or take transit and be home 7:30? Again, imagine kids to pick up?
And those are places with public transportation. There are places with nothing. So your choice is to walk for 2-3 hours or take a car 20 min.
Rather than shame people why don’t you focus on shaming the governments into doing something about it?
@@Mama_Bear524 I’ll elaborate: governments are made of individuals, and individuals vote those other individuals into positions of power. I am ”raging against the machine”, but the machine runs a bit different in every culture because of the myths the individuals in those places believe.
The individuality mindset just meanst the collective gravitates to policies and solutions that don’t take the collective into consideration, but instead pander to ”the every day joe” which is a myth in itself as joe does not excist. Liberal capitalism is individualism in the corporate world, dog eat dog, culture or history don’t need to be preserved nor the future taken into account because only the money now now now more more more! -matters. It’s a system based in the belief in constant growth (which does not excist).
So my comment does not mean individualism is all bad and collectivism is all good, we need both in moderation. We need to recognise the individual to be able to make sure everyone is not treated equal but everyone gets what they need (equality vs equity). So to your car point, I agree, in places that there is no public transportation, people *may need a car, but the foundation to why public transportation is not available in the first place is not because everyone is incompetent or didn’t think of it, but because there’s no insentive for it because of big oil and the individualistic mindset that makes people hate taxes. Taxes are what pay for the railroads, train, tram and bus systems in Europe (not to mention the healthcare system). The mindset first needs to change to positive accountability which is paramount in the collective working together. It’s cheaper for everyone to pay for taxes that go into healthcare and public transport, that way you don’t need to worry about going into debt because you’re forced to own a car or because you happen to get sick. The individualistic mind set goes ”i don’t wanna pay for other peoples healt care or buss lines!” even though you then end up paying way more in private insurance both for health and all the car payments you need to meet.
THIS mindset is the problem and what I refer to. Yes, I’m from northern Europe, I’m used to having it good and paying high taxes, I know some playces with more corruption (or absurdly costly military) pay a lot but never get the benefits because the money doesn’t end up supporting the people. That sucks, but when the system works it’s heaps better than the myth of ”pull yourself up by your own bootstraps!” I’ve never understood why some people hate to think they might not need the servicest they payed for, and so are against the whole thing. It’s a win if you never need it, the point is it’s there if you do. It increases safety too when people have their needs met, then you don’t need gated neighbourhoods where the rich stay to protect themselves from the people they stepped on on their way to the top.
*challenge yourself here, you may just think you need it because you were taught to not see any other options. Like why people won’t run to work but they drive their car to the gym and run on the treadmill? Just one example. And if you want proper public transport, fight for it! Be the change you wanna see, don’t give into apathy.
It only gets better if people advocate and use public transit.
I have been in the same situation, but that's when I ride I bike. There's even electric ones now so you don't have to break a sweat.
As someone who got their license at the age of 28, it was a combination of living in cities that had decent public transit paired with not having incentive to get it due to the prohibitively expensive used car market. My sister got her license at 16 but that was because she was able to buy a shitbox for $500 - nowadays if a car RUNS, it's a minimum of ~$3000

About driving: My husband and I moved to Seattle (from Southern California) and live in the inner city so we could sell our car. At the time it was because when my daughter grows up and is afraid to have kids of her own and asks me why my generation let the world burn, I can tell her we did everything we could.
Now that we're here, with or without climate change, we are so much happier not paying for gas, registration, insurance, car payments and repairs, or parking and enjoy public transit. We're never worried about driving after a couple of drinks, and we get a lot more exercise walking to the subway and bus stops.
America: Have more babies now!!!
Also America: Better wages? Enough time off?? Affordable healthcare??? Naw, why should the government have to take care of your children
Sounds like Japan (except the healthcare) and probably most countries
I don't want the government to care for children. I want the government to provide families what they need in order to care for their children. Or stop taxing me.

You wanna know what really sucks about being a parent? Suddenly realising how many people suck at being a parent.
My next door neighbors are my age and they have a 2-year-old boy who is most likely autistic, yet they haven't taken him to a child psychologist, they don't know how to talk to him or handle his meltdowns, and now they're pregnant again.
I was just thinking about how I’m being nice watching my friend make all these mistakes that I understand because I deal with people, I can read and use logic and I didn’t have kids with a mess of a person. I’m so disgusted with how nobody in this country has learned anything from the last 53 years a bad policy surrounding drugs and mental health problems
We have more drug use today, more overdoses, and more deaths, than ever before in American history.
We have more mental health problems and a serious mental and public health emergency that nobody is doing a damn thing about, and instead of doing a damn thing to address the reasons for why people use drugs or the reasons why people are suffering, we incarcerate them, strip away their rights, their civil liberties, and their bodily autonomy.

Hi Phil, Minnesotan here. I was glad you covered the ISP story in this show. Being a person who lives in the greater Minneapolis area, I am restricted to 1 DSL and 1 Cable company. The DSL is slow enough that I would have had to watch this video in 480P, which leaves the cable company (oddly, the one you picture in the story). The service is absolutely horrible, and with no competition, that ISP have no incentive to improve their infrastructure.
In Minnesota is able to create a competitive option to this one cable company's service, hopefully that would be the nudge that is needed to just improve the existing service.
I can 100% confirm this. We’ve had so many bad experiences with comcast it’s ridiculous.

Absolutely, it's also highly ineffective at preventing future "problematic" behaviour.

Can confirm, this sort of punishment only makes it all far worse. My parents did this and created a masochistic self-harming child that spent days daydreaming about being dead or running away. At 30 years old I STILL recall being hit more than ever being cared about. Took years of life and counseling to resolve it, let alone the luck of finding new people to love and learn from. I can confidently say that some families with lots of kids end up with adult children who want small families or no family at all. I have six kids, a few of which are now young adults. Of the 3 that are now “adults” 2 of them say they are not at all interested in having kids. One of those two have gone as far as permanently preventing pregnancy. Admittedly the 3 often discuss how scary it is to be pregnant in America these days but they also understand the chaos & cost of having a big family!
I feel like I can understand why this would be. Although I only have one sibling, because he is a high-needs disabled autistic person, I spent most of my childhood essentially having to raise him when my parents weren't home, cook for him, clean, and work through his tantrums and issues. It was like a full-time job. For that reason, I don't want to have kids now.
@@EC-jd9ej that’s exactly it, there were times the older ones had to help with the younger ones and it definitely impressed upon them the real struggles of raising children.
There's a similar concept to "bopping" used in animal training called redirection. You make a loud noise and give the animal something else to do. That's it. No pain necessary. You just clap, snap, or make a kissy noise.
I don't know why we're still entertaining the "oh, but this is the BEST way to hit a toddler" crowd. If we can train lions without corporal punishment, we don't need to hit kids.
📠
This is what I said to my partner they are treating the kids like they were dogs being trained back in the day getting smacked on the nose with a newspaper... there are much better ways to deal with a toddler acting up, and to think these people want to ruin multiple children's lives.
Right. There's still so many laws allowing people to hit their children, how hard, where, etc. That tells me the people in authority are still so attached to the idea they're not about to give it up. Because there's so much evidence against the efficacy of it it can't be that.
That couple is just 2 sociopaths finding each other. I'm betting the farm that their kids will disown them when they get the chance.

I was under a guardianship a few years ago when I was in a therapeutic wilderness program, yes one of those. I remember realizing that I wouldn't be able to leave, and all the hope drained out of me. After I left for an aftercare program, I was still under my parents' legal control. I couldn't get piercings or tattoos without their permission, I couldn't start hormones even though my treatment team was advocating for it, and wasn't in control of any of my money. While I completely acknowledge that in my particular situation this was something that I needed in order to receive treatment, no one knew what to do with me once I was out. I eventually went to a clinic to get hrt anyways, and they never even checked that they might be breaking the law in prescribing it without my parents' consent. There are absolutely no regulations around these guardianship arrangements, and no one keeps track of or communicates anything to each other. Others in my situation could experience much more on both ends that go unnoticed.

Wow, that clip of Today interview about driving was such an inspiring clip. Every single word I heard was so mesmerizing 🤧
When I worked with a elderly woman who could barely speak, couldn’t walk, nada, I over heard the family use their mother’s credit card for their flights to visit, rental cars and all the groceries, going out, everything, when they visited her. I reported it to my boss and she said there was nothing we could do. They often would keep her up and leave her door open to her bedroom while they were being drunk and loud, when I tried to close it they said she liked hearing them, but she didn’t, she wanted to sleep.
She repeatedly said I want to die, and referenced passing and all her family wanted was to keep her alive for one reason or another. When she started to actively pass they wouldn’t accept it and blamed us for abuse, I loved that lady very much and I did my best but sometimes families who think they’re doing what is necessary and compassionate is cruel and against the loved one’s wishes.
The Netherlands created a “dementia village” to care for elderly adults with all forms of dementia. It’s essentially a small town that is staffed/inhabited by both patients and trained medical professionals. Residents flourish in this environment and they’re able to fund it for the same cost as a regular nursing home. I know the concept has been expanding but I think this could serve to improve quality of life for those with dementia as well as help address the issues of guardianship.
I hear that if you mix a baby sitting element with child care specialist and include the elderly with taking care of the kids it really helps with outcomes.

Crazy that those parents called it "animal parenting models" because we don't even do that to dogs anymore due to the incredibly high risk of that dog becoming fearful, reactive, and potentially aggressive. I literally would not even slap my dog let alone on the face. A CHILD??? HELLO??? 😭
Yeah I literally remember the day those correction models started being popularly condemned for causing PTSD in dogs. We don't correct manually like that and now know it to be the sign of a lazy owner (since its commonly found information now, its only laziness that causes it to still happen). And, worse, the ANIMALS don't do it to their young at the equivalent stages of development. They're basing that off of the way, say, a dog-mom might correct a litter of pups playing too rough or misbehaving, but those pups would be the equivalent age of an OLDER child in human years and developmental stage! They're usually not seeing corrections from anyone until the pups have grown to a development stage where they can run, wrestle, play etc... like a 4-6 year old, NOT a toddler learning motor skills and still trying to figure out speech and standing without falling over!
So that means they can't even research what animals do properly and just went off some hairbrained thing they heard somewhere. :|
Yeah those kids are screwed, they will have a crappy start to life. But atleast their therapist will make a good living
as a dog owner who is deeply grateful for my relationship with my dog, the idea that hitting her would be the proper teaching mechanism is absurd. that would just make her afraid of learning in my presence, which causes a snowball effect for all future instances of learning and training. the trauma response will prevent your dog not only from learning the current trick but stumble during any future instances of training. dog's learn from encouragement and bribery - EXACTLY like humans do! bahaha

As a person who was abused as a child, it does stick with you. I feel the effects every single day. Those poor children are going to flinch for life. I detest these Duggar like families. For some reason it always ends in abuse.
My mom had five kids and this never happened. I think the issue with families like that is that they see children as a goal or a mission from above instead of people. It's dehumanizing, and it makes them react to their kids in ways they would never treat an adult. They also see their children as extensions of themselves, so any action that they don't like they feel needs to be "corrected" instead of realizing that it's normal for your kids to not be exactly like you.

Or get overwhelmed with your weekly cleaning no one told you you had to do because you "have" to vacuum the corners, wash the base boards, and mop last after doing cobwebs, dishes, counters and moving all the furniture? Because even though it's not you and your siblings anymore, you're "expected" to fulfill the same standards? On top of having your 2nd job to pay for all the things to prove you're "okay" since your 1st job covers everything but food?
And worst (best?) of all: finding yourself making the same passive aggressive statements to your partner and/or kids the same way you're expecting them to fulfill those standards because now that you're the head of the family, your only jobs are to make money and reproduce--you got them for everything else?
TBC: There's nothing wrong with wanting to live in a clean hoke or teaching your kids how to do it. It's when you have those catastrophic and/or overwhelming feelings of dread, guilt, disdain for those not participating in it, etc. that it becomes unhealthy. There's nothing wrong with budgeting your money and macros to maintain a healthy money supply and weight but there's everything wrong in someone instilling in you that you're too dumb to budget your wallet or your health because you chose to buy a $2 cheeseburger off the value menu instead of investing the time between jobs to buy and prepare food wheh you're already pressed for time and energy.
You're smarter than they treated you, and you don't have to pass on those insecurities. They may have loved you "the best way they knew how" but that doesn't mean they loved you for you--it means they loved you as much as you fit into the paradigm they brought you forth in. You deserve better than that and I hope you remember that whenever you're feeling the pressure of someone else's expectations weighing on you.

If the ruling class wants the populace to have more kids, maybe they should help make it more practical and viable to do so. Average American households require two incomes just to afford remotely livable lifestyles. Not to remotely mention the continuing rise in housing, healthcare, childcare, etc. costs. Forcing people to have unwanted kids doesn’t fix any of the actual issues around why people don’t want or can’t afford them.
The demographic and birth rate crisis is an international phenomenon. Please think outside of America.
My sister did Guardianships for people with low income. It was terrible. The courts scrutinized every purchase (which is good), but would refuse to pay her back if she had to dig into her own pocket for necessities (like socks/shoes) that the subject (usually a crazy person or an amnesiac) did not see as necessity. They also took 6 months to a year to pay for the service. She was always on the cusp of losing her lease because of this.

Birth rates aren't declining because people don't want kids. They're declining because they want to have at least 40 hours per week to do parenting. They don't want to be absentee parents. They can only survive by both parents working full time, then the household chores take up another 20 hours a week per person, and even if you can afford someone to watch your kids for you, you still don't have the time. If we all worked 20-30 hour work weeks, we would still be beating the 1950s model in productivity (where one parent worked 0 hours) and wed have the time we want to spend with our kids.
Not only that, when both parents work, childcare is usually thrust apon the oldest forcing them to shorten their childhood.

Did that dude really just claim that they smack their 2 year old on the nose/face specifically because it's *MORE* painful than a smack to any other body part, while also arguing that the point isn't to cause pain and it's not abuse?!?
And I'm sorry, if the smack was loud enough to hear in a recording, that's a smack, not a "bop". Giving your abuse a cutesy name does not make it OK.
Not saying I agree with 'Bop Dad' but no; he didn't say that.
He said they do it on the face because it requires LESS force and LESS pain to get the same 'shock' reaction than it would if you did it elsewhere.
Like, if someone gently slaps your wrist it's whatever; you barely even register it. So, if someone wants to get your attention and use your wrist to do it, they'll have to use a lot more force and a lot more pain.
But if someone even just flicks your nose, it immediately gets your attention and even has a 'stun' sort of effect.
So, their point is, the 'bop' thing is more about the stun/shock effect and not about pain. AND it requires far less force and far less pain to get that effect.
That's his justification.
You misheard them. tlThey said it takes less pain to get the same reaction. For instance, you would need to squeeze their hand tighter to get the same reaction the smack would do. This was their reasoning BTW I don't want a riot looking to cancel me.
