"Honeybee" Lyrics
Music & Lyrics by Isabella Bunny Bennett
Composed by David Bennett
You didn't have to look my way
Your eyes still haunt me to this day
But you did. Yes, you did
You didn't have to say my name
Ignite my circuits and start a flame
But you did
Oh, Turpentine erase me whole
(Cause I) don't want to live my life alone
(Well I) was waiting for you all my life
Oh
Why
Set me free, my..honey-
Bee
Ho-ney
Bee
You didn't have to smile at me
Your grin's the sweetest that I've ever seen
But you did. Yes you did
You didn't have to offer your hand
Cause since I've kissed it I am at your command
But you did
Oh, Turpentine erase me whole
I don't want to live my life alone
I was waiting for you all my life
Oh
Why
Set me free, my...honey-
Bee
Ho-ney
Bee
Hello Goodbye, Twas nice to know you
How I find myself without you
That I'll never know
I let myself go
Hello Goodbye, I'm rather crazy
And I never thought I was crazy
But what do I know?
Now you have to go
Honeybee
Honeybee
(Round)

(Acapella Round)
Rabbit & The Jon:
Hello Goodbye, Twas nice to know you
How I find myself without you
Hello Goodbye, I'm rather crazy
And I never thought I was crazy
The Spine & Michael Reed:
That I'll never know.
I let myself go.
But what do I know?
Now you have to go.

"Hi, I play guitar."
"HI, I am the vocalist."
"Hi, I play with my suspenders."
TheZizamie me tbh
Is there anything else to do with suspenders though? Plus they look like they might have been fairly elastic, and therefore, more fun to play with.
Actually it would be: "Hi, I ride quesadillas."
TheZizamie seems about right
He plays the bass he just doesn’t have it in this video

When you're happy, the song sounds happy, but when you're sad, it knows your pain.

Weird how you stumble on random bits of music or art that touch you in very unexpected ways. I'm a 50-something heavy metal / prog rock fan and this... it was beautiful. It existed all this time (almost a decade at the time of writing this comment) and I had no idea. I feel like I walked in on some strange bit of magic manifest as a kooky and catchy music video. Bravo and thank you Steam Powered Giraffe, somehow you are now forever sandwiched between Slayer and Soundgarden in my playlist.
I'm the same way, and this has been my favorite for about 2 years. I love this song.
@@erinkershaw9651 I swear I've listened to this song 20 times since I found it. It really is incredible.
Same experience here! Magical!
Completely agree. I discovered this just over a week ago and I can't stop replaying it, amongst their other great songs. I live in the far north of Canada and would pay to see them perform.
Keep stumbling, they say all the new music out there today computer assisted disposable crap made for people with the attention span of a goldfish. Hit the like button and let CZcams take you for a little ride.

My little brother just died last night, and this was the last song he was into. We're going to play it at his funeral, it's such a beautiful song
I’m so sorry to hear that. I lost my little brother that I raised so he was like my son too. It’s hard! I’m hoping that you’re doing better and getting through it. The pain never goes away, but somehow we learn to live with it. At least, that’s what I keep hearing. I lost my husband almost 10 years ago and almost every other family member since then. I’m still in pain and I’m not quite sure how to deal with it. I’ve tried everything. How’re you doing?
The community this band has is the greatest thing ive seen in my whole life
I hope you are doing OK....sorry for your loss...
Breaks my heart it’s gonna be ok though pal . You hang in an pray I’m gone pray too
Rest well little brother. Hope you get to meet my sister that died last year on this day. She also loved this song would Play it every morning
I'm a diehard angry death metal fan. If you were to ask anyone one thing about me, it would be the screaming angry vocals of the music I'm always blaring. This... This stopped me dead in my tracks. I don't know what it is, if it's the endearing lyrics, the nostalgic feel of the steampunk animatronics or the breathtaking harmony of it all... This song is beyond perfection, hitting on every head available. It makes me smile and want to cry all at the same time. It has to be one of the best feel good songs next to Brown Eyed Girl I've come across in all of my 38 years on this planet... Bravo, Stem Powered Giraffe!!! Please never stop!!! This is the best song ever, and that's coming from a damn near 40 year old woman with anger issues and repressed rage... Yesss... This song is it!!!
So here I am a 57 year-old guy wondering what my 16 year-old daughter was listening to.. and I like it!

My girlfriend broke up with me, but we were still living in the same house. I was singing along to this song in the kitchen doing dishes. She came in and hugged me and we reconciled.

Your comment was great, tears and laughter in a moment
didn't save mine but did discover this song through last relationship and its definitely one of those things that is gonna stick with me for life. Currently trying to get it down to a solo piano song I can play so been listening to it way too much over last few days lol. But i can never tire of it. Even if there was bad listening to this brings back all the good memories from that time. Guess the "how i find myself with you" hits a bit hard in the feels tho lol
This was my wedding song. We are no longer together. But every once in a while I'll come here to listen to it and remind myself of what it was like to be truly happy even for a brief moment. For that I thank the artists of this song. Thank you :)

Hope you're happy now tho
I’ve never been married, dated once, never had sex. This song hits me hard. I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you, I know how bad loneliness feels
But it’s a good bye song. It’s a heartbreaking song. I’m sorry for your heart
My ex-fiance ruined this song for me, left me for her friend right after our daughter was born. It was going to be our wedding song too, she didn't know SPG until I showed her this now every time I hear it I get sick to my stomach.
I was just looking for the "I'm a giraffe" vine and I found this... Not disappointed...
Perfect haha
that's a hell of a way to be introduced to this band, I have to wonder how most people found it. This song just showed up in my reccomendeds.
SAY COLORADO
Welcome traveler
Bruh I found this band through a internet historian video
Everyone here is stupid talented, but The Spine's imitation of a vaudevillian animatronic is just too fucking good. I think his facial expressions behind that mime-like paint are the real selling points of his act
I think the music is, standalone, RARE AUTHENTIC HITS ME IN THE GUT, MelanBeauticholly. The duality/irony, Nah, it's what we all are, in a way, Light/Being/Shadow/Being/Light.
Most musicians just make an exhibition of themselves.. these guys make it an art that compliments their music.
🔥
Exceptionally Intelligent assessment.
it looks like they recorded while playing a slowed down version so they could speed up the recording when putting the music over it. It really helps sell the quick jerky movements as mechanical. Good at music and good at cinematography.
IKR? I feel like I should hate everything about this - former mimes, steampunk costumes, but man such a hauntingly beautiful song and perfect harmonies - reminds me of Queen, or ELO. This might be my favorite video on CZcams
A moment of respect for the spine and rabbit, if you will, please. They've been making music for over a decade together.
I mean it would suck to stop making music with your favorite sibling but it's still heartwarming nevertheless
My ex wife and I would sing this song to each other over the phone while I was deployed overseas.
She cheated on me while I was gone, I knew something was wrong when she couldn't sing this song to me anymore.
This is the first time listening to this song since 2013, I miss my little honeybee wherever she is now... I hope she found happiness in her life.
My wife cheated on me last year and didnt want to try to work on things like I did. She regrets now, but we are both learning to find happiness and be better people without each other now.
I'm so sorry she did that to you. I hope you can find happiness ❤
I really hope some day you will find someone who made you feel the same way honeybee did, and that they can be your new honeybee.
Im really sorry for you.
Hey man I’m really sorry
More importantly We hope you have found happiness 😊
I like how during the song they just _don't. stop. moving._ like, at all. its always something, weather it be a flick of the wrist, or swaying or whatever else they're _always moving._
If robots become still, they tend to shutdown.
That's what really sells it. The song is great but the performance is better

My son just got married this past Saturday. This was their first dance song. They sang it to each other as they danced. His new wife has a beautiful soprano voice and hit those harmonies perfectly. It was magical. Made me cry a thousand tears.

It's a song about loss and separation. Interesting choice for a wedding.
You DO know this about breaking up
Amazing
@@Hookah_Horns yes I understand that...but they way they sung it to each other you would never know that.
i dont think people realize how talented these guys are.
humans are naturally very expressive and fluid in all of our motions.
its actually a bitch and a half to deliberately act very stiff, even then you'll be incredibly expressive in other ways.
so actually managing to pull off moving like a machine, deliberately making your body less fluid and expressive
requires both allot of talent
and allot of practice.
i for one really appreciate the amount of effort they put into something most people wont even realize the difficulty of.
Yeah the pantomimeing is insanely good here
They've all got backgrounds in mime, clowning, physical theatre, that sort of thing. They're all excellent performers on multiple levels.
Deep voice guy in the back had me genuinely wondering if he was CGI for a bit
plus. the harmonies
It's the set of movements Rabbit pulls off at 2:28 that mesmerizes me the most for me
can we just talk about how Spine's vocal range is like -27 to 100009

This is the truest statement ever. I tried to show them to my mom and point out which one the Spine was and she got very confused as to which one he was.
IKR
I showed this video to my 86 year old mom and now we both have a crush on The Spine.
Team The Spine here too :D I have a similar voice as his deeper part and I cannot understand or even believe how he can sing in the high positions sounding so effortlessly and not at all strained. He just sounds like a person who has a naturally high voice. And then a low voice. He has to have 2 sets of vocal chords.

We put my childhood Labrador down yesterday. Outside was cold, but sunny and beautiful. She ran in the yard with our other pup, then we gave her treats and eventually laid with her, each family member petting her, as she passed. She really was the happiest dog I’d ever met and 9 years with her wasn’t enough. She was my honeybee. This song will forever be hers in my mind.
I love you and miss you so much already, Addie bear
The movements are so good at points that they look like CGI. Which is a weird thing to say.
The lead is SO GOOD at moving like a machine, like if I didn;t know any better I would say they were an actual robot. They are so natural at making movements look artificial.
Mime training + talent (for days) = _flawlessness_
Davoodles I remember reading something about them going to mime school. I think you're talking about rabbit but I'm 90% sure the spine is technically the lead. I don't really know...
update: nevermind, I just need to spend 5 minutes in the comments to learn more than I have in the past month....

How very DARE this band exist for a dozen years before I stumble upon them? Now this aging mosher is going to have to do research and purchase cds. Exquisite audio and visual. I'm NOT crying! It's the pollen!
Spotify DJ served this song to me seemingly at random, and it struck a chord with me. Coming here, I see thousands of comments from thousands of people over more then 10 years, nearly all of them expressing how they were touched by this specific song. Some people talking about weddings, feeling something new about themselves, being inspired to tell that someone, lamenting the loss of a loved one and more. I'm not sure if when this was being written, you could imagine how far and wide it would go. I don't know how much success SPG has enjoyed or how much was a result of this song, but some of that success has to be in touching that many people.
I will be checking out the links and trying to learn more, but this specific song stands out and is worthy of celebration. Thank you for having made it.
My girlfriend used to sing this to me before a drunk driver took her from me. This song. It's helped me through so many tough times. The more I hear it, the more the lyrics mean for me. My fiancé played this song over the radio during an innocuous drive to the store, and I simply fell in love with it. I can't put into words how it makes me feel, but I hear it and think of her, and I think of sitting in the passenger seat of her mom's car, snow still blanketing the ground from a gnarly snowstorm early Feburary, hand warmers in my pockets and joking and smiling with her.
... we weren't engaged then. I'm so glad she popped the question, even if it wasn't entirely a surprise-- she was too anxious about messing it up to keep it a secret.
We were 3 years long distance and I practically ran away from home to be with her the second i could do so legally... I really, truly do love her... moreso than I could ever put into words...
I'm putting this on the wedding playlist, don't tell her 🤫

They’re pretty cool live
It's 2020 and I'm woke... 😁 first time hearing this and I love it!
Just as somebody who's only really getting interested in physical theatre now, the movement they do is just gorgeous, as I understand, they've all got backgrounds in mime, clowning, physical theatre and to do that so well, while singing beautifully AND playing instruments is honestly just magical.
this song makes me want to fall in love - that slow, intense burn that only gets stronger with each adorable quirk you discover in them, their flaws you fully embrace, their insecurities you work to eliminate. you wake up in the morning not dreading the day, but excited to exist for another period in their presence. things are right - they're unlike anything you've experienced, and this is all you want.
and after time - gradually, very gradually - you notice them slipping away from you. its subtle at first: they don't hold your hand as often, they don't joke around and tease you like before; you no longer fall asleep cuddling together, date nights become sparse, communication is minimal. but you're too entranced in what you had and what you were to believe its happening, things will get better you know they will. and then the end comes. they're finished with this, with you, with everything you guys were. you've been so mesmerized with being in love with them that you didn't realize they've been falling out of love with you. and now you're here, alone and empty, nothing to make you smile. part of you wants to foster the feelings and joy you had when things were good - still admire their smile, the tiny mannerisms that enchanted you, just remember who you fell in love with. but you know that's just denial, and its over, and its time to move on, but you just cant. this song makes me want to fall in love then be completely broken by it.
How dare you make me feel like this.
Well shit that's well written.
I just woke up and you gotta hit me with this...
Sometimes, it TRULY is a Forever Thing. Unfortunately, more often than not, it turns out to be True for only One of you. I lost my beloved in a drowning accident 4 days before Christmas 2008. Now, every day that I'm without him, seems like Forever. He used to joke that we were One Soul in 2 bodies... I guess, I've found some sort of comfort in the notion that he's not really gone, we merely consolidated.

What's that story about Rabbit falling in love with toaster again? :^)
+Anatoly Novikov It's "On Top Of The Universe", I think. At least, that's what they play in "The Quest For The Eternal Harp Of Golden Dreams" after Rabbit talks about the toaster. :)
түlεя јσsερн Thank you :)
Anatoly Novikov No problem!
This was just played at a friend's funeral. Never heard it before and now I can't stop listening to it. It is hauntingly beautiful. Calming, soulful and addicting. I absolutely love it.
Happy 10th Anniversary to a song that still gets new and old fans flocking to be memorized by Steam Power Giraffe's musical talents and hypnotizing choreography
The first time I heard this song was when I was tripping on shrooms and my friend put it on. The harmonies were angelic and I looked at my girlfriend and a wave of euphoria came over me. My friend, who just went through a breakup, said it's one of the most beautiful song when you're in love, but the one of the most painful when you're not.
Which song??
Never mind
Brian Compton
Literally the best comment I have ever read.
It is also bitter sweet when you have lost someone you love. My sis played it for me only a few months after I became a widow. I balled, and still do when I'm feeling the emptiness.
Your friend is right, or rather great when you there's a love you can share, painful when it's a love you alone have.
"How I found myself without you,
That I'll never know."
Oof.
why am i crying to men dressed as robots
ah damn bro, you got me there
@AnotherOne fuck that was smooth
@@zipop7880 she was a she back then too. She just didn't go through the process to be who she was inside on the outside too. But now she is who she always has been on the outside too and she is beautiful
Ben Arnold hey man,
1. Whatever you’re talking about has no “cure,” nor does it need one
2. Let people be happy and live their lives
3. Go away
It's a very beautiful song. Love it!!
Steampunk is actually the healthiest way to prepare Punk
I have avoided creating a CZcams channel for the sole purpose of commenting on videos for literally years, but I have been listening to this song on repeat all day and couldn't help myself. This is beautiful, and I feel like it flipped a switch in me the first time I heard it. I listened, I cried - I listened and cried some more. Thank you for this work of art. Sad I am late to the game, but better late than never.

The guitarist moves like a stop motion animation character
+Morgan Murdock omg you're right he does! O_o Like Jack Skellington from Nightmare Before Christmas =D
+Morgan Murdock I was thinking that he might just be an animation, but he looked way too real. Kinda confused me the first time I watched

The umbrella skeleton may be the single best metaphor I’ve seen in my 62 years.
I dig this band.
My son stumbled across this band and he introduced the entire family to it. Myself, I am an old hard rock loving guy who doesn't really get the steam punk phenomena, but I'll tell you what, I love this music. I have seen them in concert twice and it was such an enjoyable show. There is a lot of spontaneity and ad-libbing that you don't see often in today's performances. My son and his wife named their dog "Honeybee" after this song, and she's a perfect fit for it. See their show if you can!
I totally agree! I dont listen to ANYTHING but hard rock, but I love "Honeybee" and "Hold Me."
I've wanted to see tgem live for a while now, hopefully I can at some point 😊
@@missyc2744 i mostly listen to rock and experimental, but I do love a healthy dose of ballads, swing and indie pop
I'm a lover of music that range from Blues Rock and Hard Rock to frickin Death Metal, Grindcore and Deathcore, and this band's music is basically break time from the everyday headbanging I do. Thank God for this band, I love them to death.
I couldn’t agree more.
Just found this, and I'm completely addicted :D
me too lol
That is why they made A Way To Your Heart
Miss my honeybee.
I can listen to this song everyday for the rest of my life and it will never loose the emotional impact it has. I know SPG are a little burnt out from it but it is truly one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard and brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. ❤
You can't just listen to this song once and move on
Oh No
You gotta sit down turn it up and sink deep into it.
ctarsun dysart I totally zone out to it
I know right, I got to listen to it a few times, just like a few moments of euphoria, I cant explain it otherwise, its like some sort of mental sedative delivered through the ear holes in my stupid head. It allows me to relax for at least a moment in time. Now I must go listen to it again.

"Oh, Turpentine erase me whole, Cause I don't want to live my life alone. Well I was waiting for you all my life" 😭😭💕
You said it
Absolutely 🥰
Well put
I still miss her.
What a great love song. I discovered these guys back in 2015. About the same time my Wife's cancer returned. During the next four years, I would play this song for her...a lot. She loved it too. Now that she's gone, this wonderful song just makes me cry every time I hear it. I see her smiling that beautiful smile that I fell in love with on our first day of high school. For 52 years, it never occurred to me that one day she and her smile would be gone. What a great love song. But it hurts so much to listen to it.
set you free honeybee. my honneeeeeeeybeeeee Hello goodbye twas nice to you. how i find myself without you that i'll never know
6 years later and this song still gives me goosebumps.
I'm not engaged, I don't even have a boyfriend, but I want this to be my wedding song.
Julia D you’ll find someone
To be fair, this song is about what happens when the relationship fails for whatever reason. It's still beautiful, though.
You want a song about a girl using a guy for what she needs then leaving to be your wedding song? O.o
Update: I am now engaged and still want it to be my wedding song. It's tied with something else, so it's gonna be a tough choice.
@@DizzyJaeHow did it go? I hope u guys are very happy and i’m sure the song u chose was amazing either way
this has been the first time in 5 years i've been able to listen to this song after getting out of an abusive relationship where this was 'our' song. i'm ready to enjoy this song with my new honeybee and not let it be tainted by bad memories.
AlaskaStreet good for you man. Best of luck for you, hope you find someone to be happy with
That's so hard to do. I swore I'd never associate another band/song with a lover after Crywolf was ruined for mw
Oi! My ex who was apparently an abusive ass used this song against me.
Luckily classical conditioning exists and I was able to listen to this song long enough to no longer associate it with Howl.
I'm trying to reclaim this song now after an abusive relationship 5 years ago, too. No new flame but don't want him taking things I loved anymore.
@@PhantomMoocat Yea! It takes a lot of strength and a lot of power to get over the hurdles trauma and abuse., especially when a song reminds you of your abuser. I believe in you, you can get through this.
Totally stumbled on this video from Shorts of giraffes. Woah. This is a song? A band? It’s a soft song? They move and dress like that? And it’s been over a decade ago? And THAT many views? AND I’VE NEVER HEARD OF THEM??
This moment is very surreal for me. I’m 53 and feel like I’m suddenly in a Woody Allen movie.
Today is the 10th anniversary of this song, which has accompanied me for 5 of them, and it is fascinating how these funky robots have made me cry, reflect and have comforted me in difficult times, it is one of my favorite songs and in fact, I have 2 tattoos in its honor, today is a special day for me and although it is difficult to understand, but this song is like one more of my friends and I will never forget the way it makes me feel
This is beautifully put, thank you for sharing.
HOW DID I JUST NOW FIND THESE PEOPLE?!?!
i know right. Only reason i heard of this awesome group is because of the joke song Montana on Battleborn, and the work they did with steam world franchise.
Me too..
Same here...

Why do their faces and movements give me Borderlands nostalgia?
i thought the same thing. Handsome-jack-esque
Jacob White Yeah dude made me think they were characters from the first borderlands that were rejects lolol.
The black outline on the makeup looks like heavy cell shading.
Jacob White i could see classic rabbit as like a gunsmith shop keep.
SAME HANDSOME JACK OMG
I love the seagull flying by in the background
these guys are a little too good at being animatronics-
They imitate the movements of a robot like that so well that I thought I was watching an *animated video.* This is awesome.
I'm still not sure The Spine isn't just CGI
lol
He said go watch it for another 9 million times so...Here I am.
What number are you on?
I'm at a thousand easy.... Feels....

I'm 65 years young now and stumbled across this amazing video that is absolutely my favorite song now. Where has this been hiding???
If they do another fallout game this song should be honorarily included for important reasons I will not be disclosing at this time. Or probably any other.
This song has DRIVEN me INSANE looking for hidden meaning...
I'm convinced that there's one lyric in the song that hints at so much more. Think about it, there are only a few complex words in the song--in fact, every word in the song is one or two syllables except for the titular "honeybee" and one other word:
"turpentine."
I didn't know what it was, so I looked it up. Turpentine is an essential oil extracted from tree sap. Now, it's commonly used as a paint thinner and a paint remover, but alternative medicine and various folk tales still (falsely) claim that it's a cure for all sorts of made-up problems. So, it's not unthinkable for someone to drink the stuff. Now bear with me; turpentine, when ingested, works as poison. It causes hydrocarbon poisoning that leads to inflammation of the lungs and heart arrhythmias. Think of it as a slightly less potent form of bleach. A single tablespoon can be fatal to a child.
Anyway, pay close attention to the lyric:
"Oh, turpentine, erase me whole, 'cause I don't want to live my life alone."
If you take this line literally, the singer is talking about suicide.
And the WHOLE song, Rabbit's tone feels remorseful and even a little annoyed at the subject... like a "why did you make me love you so much" kind of deal, right? I think Rabbit is singing to a lost loved one, and admitting that he doesn't have the will to go on.
Why else would they use such a specific word as turpentine? There's no reason!
"your eyes still haunt me" ...literally. From the grave.
"set me free" from this existence.
"I find myself without you" because Rabbit's loved one is gone.
"I'm rather crazy" -- suicidal tendencies are often referred to as a mental illness.
"now you have to go" -- and there's nothing I can do about it, so I might as well follow you.
Now, this is just my personal interpretation, and the band even said in a 2012 interview that the words in the song are secondary to the tune, but this adds so much more depth and meaning to the song in my opinion. And works of art belong partially to their audience, so I'll stick to my interpretation... it explains why the song leaves me feeling so sad each time I listen... which I can't stop myself from doing constantly...
Yea it is about putting someone on a pedestal and loving them so much and them leaving you. When somebody leaves you, you are kind of in a state where you don't know how you will live without them and wish you were dead.
But hey, I think that way over minuscule things like having work the next day. I don't really wish I was dead, Its just something someone says.
So yea, I don't believe the song is entirely about suicide, but it does have the theme of not wanting to exist without the other person who left you.
Edit: and yes I know this comment is 1 year late.
Only The Spine could make playing the guitar look robotic
and only for The Spine would that Statement be a compliment
The Shim Sham Man I can’t not agree with this-
Welll There was Bob Mothersbaugh of Devo.
Time for my annual viewing of this video. Helps fill the hole in my heart.
I don’t care if they cosplay as robots and shit, this song is the most beautiful piece of music I’ve ever heard
I have watched this video 30 times in the past week. I cannot take my eyes off of their movements. The song is achingly poignant. With the small touches and the harmonization, this song is one of the best constructed songs I have ever heard. I am not young, and am a fan of all music, from classical, jazz, bluegrass, classic rock, hiphop, alternative rock, heavy metal...the point is, this song is not only a gorgeous example of mathematical beauty in songwriting, but also makes use of chords that at once sound nostalgic, even having never heard the song before. The layered themes, among them loneliness and love, are at the heart of humanity. This song is one of the best-written songs out there, and I would argue that it has a place in the top 1000 songs by peoplekind... This is Voyager-Golden-Records quality...in other words: Shoot it into space as an example of the best of what makes us human. I am not being hyperbolic; it's that good. Thank you for this incredible contribution, SPG. If this is your only legacy, (and I suspect it shall not be) rest knowing it's a job well-done.
Yeah, what Chandler said. Well put, dude.
Hear hear
This comment certainly deserves a golf clap! Well said Chandler 👏👏👏

It seems like nobody knows this song without a powerful story connected
It’s good coming to these comments and seeing I’m not the only person still enjoying this song and the band here in 2020 ☺️
