This poor piggie was rescued just a few days earlier. His new owners came to see us to get him back on track to health! His nails are a terrible mess and likely not been cared for for many months.

Oh God. I just saw the nails. Thank you for rescuing this pig. That has got to be excruciating. Poor sweet baby.
It's awful! That's how my girls were when I first brought them home...their nails were so long, they were curling under, must've been so uncomfortable. That's actually how I found this channel, I made them appt to have them clipped, but didn't want to have them wait another week, so Saskia taught me how to do it myself lol. This channel has been so helpful.

As a guineapig owner, I was so freaked out by the nails... and how long that hair was!
My guineapig is a short hair, and she hates getting nails clipped, but afterwards she is able to jump so high it almost seems like she can fly! God bless you

When I realized I wouldn't have time to brush my Texels everyday I decided to shave their hair shorter because I didnt want them to have matted hair. Not only that it's nearly summer and I don't want them to be way to hot in the summer.

I had two sisters who had both super long hair but I gave them a trim about twice a month to keep their butts from getting this tangled up.
Even brushing can't fully prevent their fur from knotting into tiny dreadlocks but if you cut the hair to a bit less than "floor length" around their butt it usually keeps it from happening.
Yes. I did hear about keeping their butt area trimmed mostly because of matting. And just keeping it trimmed in general so they don’t accidentally step on it.
@@LittleKingdom3 you only have to shave it that close if its already too late or they have any kind of skin issues. I knew a guinea pig which had psoriasis or something similar(it's been a few years and I don't remember that well) and his owner had to keep his hair really short or his skin would get extremely flaky and itchy. This poor little guy had lotion that needed to be put on daily but after he go am almost buzz cuthe was fine.
Mine basically just got their bangs trimmed, just on their butt. 😅We used hair clippers and scissors and especially the smaller of the sisters tended to get knots in her fur really easily. I adopted them from a childhood friend who then developed an allergy to them and really wanted them to go to a home she could still visit them.
I was never the biggest guinea pig fan and still aren't but I liked these two very much.

My little sister took home 2 Guinea pigs from the school she was working at bc she felt sorry for the way they were being treated. She started off with feeding them and keeping their cage clean, but after a few days, the novelty wore off and how much upkeep they needed started to take a toll. She really does love the animals with all her heart, but her attention is eventually lost. She just couldn't stay focused and committed enough. In her case, she has a disability that was the major cause of this. Sometimes even when someone loves an animal, they just aren't capable of taking care of them like they wish they could. I couldn't help her with the pigs bc I'm very allergic to them and to wood shavings that was being used as bedding. I don't know what happened to the pigs. My dad ended up losing that house and I moved in with my mom, away from my dad and sister. I hope that they found better homes.
People who get pets and don't care to research and learn more. As soon as I got my first piggy i was on CZcams etc and joined groups on fb for support. I love watching Saskia help these beautiful fur babies.

Clipping nails on piglets who've rarely/never had a mani is tough stuff. My two of six rescues (from a hoard) had nails that curled ram horn style. It took weeks of coaxing, snacks, calm handling, and serious cbd cream to get them to manageable condition. Great video

My twin sister and her husband had a guinne pig and his name was Boogie. He was spoiled rotten, but so very smart. We miss little Boogie. He lead a perfect life and was seen by his veterinarian once per month for a general examination. Boogie lived to old age and life expectancy of a little guinea pig. My sister and her husband had little Boogie cremated, and his ashes remain at their home in a secure place.
Poor neglected Gary! Those nails had never been touched, nor the hair combed or groomed. So glad he has new owners that will care for him! Bet he needs his pocket cleaned too!
It hurts my heart to know that such a cute animal got neglected, guinea pigs are my favorite animal and I have 2 of my own and the don’t deserve neglect

Those guys are awesome for helping Gary out! I can tell he's in good hands now and will get the care he needs. I feel sorry for poor Gary, that hair must have been so heavy with all those mats.
I've had sick guinea pigs get poop in their nails before but I've never seen it so bad. I'm amazed the nail clippers could get through that. I use a bit of jojoba oil to soften the poop and gently remove it with a wooden cuticle stick (the type used on people). I've found that to be gentle and seems less stressful on a sick guinea pig.
I am glad Gary is safe. Just watching piggie videos. Our piggie died today. His name was Brownie and he was the best pig. He loved to cuddle. He was about 5. He started having breathing problems and we took him to the vet. They put him in a oxygen chamber and gave anibiotics but he only lived 3 more hours. They asked about bedding but we have fleece blankets.
We are going to miss our Brownie. His cage mate Oscar already look like he is wondering where his friend is.

My grandma is a guinea pig breeder, the guinea pigs that grow hair like this aren’t rare, she has plenty of them and it’s not necessary to cut off the long hair I think they just did it to get off all the gross fur. He’ll have beautiful hair when it grows back!

Saskia, piggies know you love them and won't hurt them, I can tell by the way they act. I've had little furry friends for a half century, and piggies are very sensitive to hoomuns feelings.

Decent clippers, scissors and grooming tools essential for long haired guinea pigs. Always had these for mine and was helpful when I had adopted 2 neglected guineapigs, lady said didnt like to be taken for grooming as they didnt like it, so I washed, treated for worms/mites as a precaution and trimmed off the lumps n gave them a wash and maintained their fur until they trusted me and then they liked the grooming, massaging helped alot while grooming and they learned to enjoy their pampering. rescuing guineapigs is rewarding if your prepared and can afford to do so, I dont have many atm but Im part of a rescue group and one of the original members and we keep an eye out or rehome ones in need to to right people. Your videos on older boar cleaning was helpful for one that I think didnt have the right foods to aid his digestion. Alot of us in rescues enjoy your videos
