Classic SpongeBob SquarePants episodes are remembered for the generations that followed them, including The Sponge Who Could Fly, also known as the lost SpongeBob episode. During the story, Patchy the Pirate ends up finding the lost episode, and it's a bunch of cheap walk cycles.
While SpongeBob's walk cycle is only a small part of the episode, it's also the most memorable. Why does it work so well in the context of this story?

Tbh I imagine this is how most “lost episodes” are. Nobody dies, or anything, it’s most likely just an animation/audio test, and I get that this isn’t really a lost episode, but u get my point

Yeah I prefer the test ones than the scary ones, but when it comes to ACTUAL lost episodes, I enjoy a good mystery to see if the said episode will be recovered and resurfaced. Which is why I enjoy the lost media side of CZcams. It's so interesting

I always found it weird sponge is a series full of memeable moments but more often then not forced memes that try to hard to be the next big thing it almost soils the show in a way bc it's alway pointed out as oooo that frame a meme ooo another meme here
Strangely enough, the walkcycle isn't actually what pops into my mind with this episode at all- it's actually Patchy's fanboy freakout that stuck with me the most! Seeing the bed full of spongebob merch being tossed in particular sent me back to the first time I watched this episode! Not sure why, it just hit me with the nostalgia!

You know, this is likely something that would be a lost episode. It is called the Lost episode after all. And the walk cycle is like a test animation for animators to use. That was never meant to be released to the public.

The walk cycle was so creepy to me as a kid. There were no words other than music and the faces, the faces he makes and how is body contorts was creepy. It went on for so long and it kept repeating. It’s my version of Mickie in hell.

I completely forgot this existed. I didn't even know this was part of "The Sponge That Could Fly." The funny thing is, is that after seeing this, I DO remember seeing the walk cycle and Patchy throwing a tantrum, but I don't remember a single thing of the actual episode. I think that's so crazy. Something about the SpongeBob specials with Patchy make me so nostalgic.
The special itself is so memorable compared to the actual episode they hype up. The episode itself is mid, but all the Patchy scenes and the walk cycle are great.
I actually had this episode on a DVD and remember being so intrigued by this walk cycle and I think I even tried to emulate it once

The super catchy music, with the wacky animations of Spongebob, actually made it very fun to watch.
when i was a kid watching this episode for the first time, the walk cycle actually freaked me out. i was so confused watching it, I wondered if this was actually happening and it lowkey gave me nightmares. but now as an adult I can appreciate what they did and it funny to me now. and yes the music is catchy

Of all the SB spinoffs we've had (so far), I am both surprised and disappointed that there's no live action Patchy show. He comes in second to Ice King in my list of favorite Tom Kenny characters. It could be similar to Pee-wee's Playhouse, except nautical-themed of course, with people dropping by and occasionally they'd have SB pop on.

@@CinnamonGrrlErin1 honestly I’d prefer to watch the Pee-wee’s playhouse type show, it would be a lot different than the current spongebob shows, and I think people would like it more, especially if they were to throw in bits of spongebob clips that were made specifically for the show!

I loved Patchy’s character. His segments were my favorite part of spongebob when I was younger. It’s weird for me to think people forget he was apart of the show in its earlier years. I had this episode and a few others on dvd and I loved watching it over and over again💀 I’m pretty sure I still have them somewhere but they most likely have a few scratches on them from how often I’d watch them😅

This episode felt like a fever dream to me
I feel like it'd make more sense if the walk cycles were indeed a "lost episode" specifically meant as an animation test, and Patchy would find an actual full-length lost episode in like, his backyard or something, which would have led into The Sponge Who Could Fly
Either way, I still think that the whole special is pretty underrated and has some shining moments, the walk cycles being one of them
I find it funny that I remember the walk cycle, I remember patchy’s reactions to it and everything he did to find the video, but for some reason, I don’t remember them being linked. Before watching this vid, I remembered the walk cycle as something that happened on a random episode before Spongebob went about his usual day and patchy’s whole thing just being a patchy centric ep by itself. I blamed how young I was when this came out
I love how gently Patchy brushes the pictures of SpongeBob on the wall during his rage, which makes said pictures _violently fly off._ Amazing.

As a kid I always hid behind the couch when I was alone and this the walking cycle played.
I'm surprised you didn't mention that a lot of the different walk cycles are actually pop culture references like when he does the "keep on truckin" walk (the one where he's snapping his fingers). Its kind of an homage to old school animation

To me I see it as a reference to Suicide Mouse Creepypasta. To sum it up: It was a Micky Mouse walk cycle on a street, and it ended with a creepy face. Nick likely didn't do the creepy face to not scare kids, but from the episode which references the Suicide Squidward Creepypasta(don't ask which one I don't remember), we know Nick is willing to reference Creepypastas

I also thought the scene was a reference to animation test videos studios like to put out to see how well characters can interact with different emotions and/or movements, which is what the walk cycle somewhat portrays. Also tapes like these actually tend to be discarded, or stored very secretly to actually give a sense of it being real lost spongebob media. So in a logical and realistic sense, it works!

The entirety of Sponge Who Could Fly is genius and very underrated. I always thought of the episode as a parody of when the show jumped the shark and it is by far the episode with the most layers of irony (which is probably why it didn't spawn many memes).

The Patchy and Potty parts were probably the best part of the special.
I thought the episode was pretty good too.
The thought of Spongebob becoming a superhero but soon realizes he’s in over his head and that it’s not for him was a pretty cool idea at that time (for 2003).
To me, this episode was an ad in disguise. All of the merch that Patchy had made me jealous. Since then, I always asked for Spongebob merch for my birthdays as a kid. At one point I even had a spongebob cookie jar that talked lolll
One of the first SpongeBob DVD's that I got contain this "lost episode"; when I saw it, I didn't care about it (since this is one of the first episodes that I saw in this show. Now, I only listen to it because it is a bop

This episode was on a dvd from the early 00's, I believe i still may have this dvd. I distinctly remember watching it back in 2012 or so, and was very confused by it and didn't pay too much attention. If I'm able to find it, I'll upload part of it.

Honestly that walk cycle scared the shit out of me. It freaked me out. It wasn't normal. I kept thinking that something bad was going to happen. The music creeped me out for some reason too.
