      It really says a lot for someone to be able to admit their fault and also grow from it because while I think the take where he just full on loses it is good . The one we get in the game is so much more powerful because it is so restrained. Like Joel is partially grieving but also in disbelief and he's just slowly realizng that this is happening. His daughter is gone and not coming back and the reality just hits him so hard that he doesn't even know what to do with himself

      Realistically though yelling and crying was how a father would be like in that situation. But for fictional purposes yeah the final one hits the most cause the players feel Joel's pain better than what they would by seeing him externalizing it more, cause in that case the attention would be more on his dramatic reaction than on what he's actually experiencing.

      When I lost my father to cancer, in my mind I wanted to cry, yell, curse, scream, beat the walls... but on the outside, I was in complete shock and disbelief and acted much more like the final shot they ended up using.
      Real life is often very different in reactions, to the point where if someone acted emotionally so little at a time of someone's death in a movie, it would feel unrealistic and shitty. But in reality, people more often than not just go silent, into a shock...
      Or even having watched some crazy videos about real life accidents, people missing limbs often look... disturbingly calm, as opposed to how such is depicted in movies. (Yeah I know my curiosity is screwed up...)
      Something that unfathomable and "impossible" just feels unreal for a long time. Especially the "Danny?" line where he pleads for some help, whatever help in despair is genius in the scene as you just want to solve the situation.. to undo it.... instead of accept it.

    Revisiting this. The performance that made the cut was indeed the best one because it's more painful when you hear Joel still trying NOT to cry and still bargaining -- "Don't do this to me, baby" -- instead of going straight to an anguished cry. It's several times more heartbreaking to see someone holding on and denying a death of a child for a few moments more, even when they're already holding a corpse. So that when that scene cuts to black (and leaps into the intro credits of the game), you know for sure that after those initial moments of denial and struggle not to go mad with grief, Joel does let out an anguished scream (like how Troy did it in other takes). They just don't show it to you and let your own imagination fill in the rest. That's how they make you cry. So that when the game starts with Joel years later, goddamn, the emotional weight of the darkness inside and around him hits you like a truck. 😅 And shit, you're starting the story. Phew. Wrecks your heart.

    I know many hate Druckmann but I gotta say, he called it absolutely right here. When my father died, what I felt was wanting to scream, cry, yell, exactly like Troy's first take. To let all the emotion out.
    But funny thing is... I didn't. Because it didn't feel real yet. I couldn't process it... or accept it.
    So the take they ended up using, with Joel trying to "bargain"... call for Danny for help, even if he knows he can't help. Call for Sarah...

It's kind of sad their acting is translated in to GCIs. I know that's how it works but these acting look better than the one in some live action films I've watched lately.

    This scene broke me. So... yeah... they got it! 😭
    I didn't see it coming. I knew the game was about a man and a young girl, but when I started playing, I just assumed Sarah was that girl. But, nope. They got me. 10 mins into the game, and Naughty Dog had my emotions at their beck and call.
    And this scene was so important to the rest of the story. It needed to happen, and we needed to see it to fully understand Joel's journey. To understand why he was so resistant to Ellie. And to see the change and fully understand why Joel, in the end, would do absolutely anything for Ellie. And why we got the ending we did.
    Bravo Naughty Dog. Bravo Neil. Bravo Troy. Bravo Hana. 🙌🏻

  • @Noirshock
    @Noirshock Před rokem +5

    After watching the first episode of the series, I found it incredible how Sarah's death was so... unemotional. Even a background was added so that we could become attached to her, following her for a whole day in her normal life compared to the game where we only meet her during the night of the accident and even with all that she didn't manage to generate the same impact.
    Perhaps it's because when I played TLOU I went into the game knowing nothing and I was shocked after watch what happen to her but the series failed to capture a moment that became iconic in the industry and a powerful moment for Joel that become much more important later in the game.
    Now seeing this behind the scenes (thanks youtube) one can see the importance of the direction.

    • @joshz2491
      @joshz2491 Před rokem +5

      I don’t think you or anyone else, not feeling the emotional impact of Sarah’s death has anything to do with bad acting or poor directing. I have seen many reactions to the TV series that were extremely emotional here, and a good amount have played the game. I think that for some people emotional responses come as a result of shock alone, and no matter how much you try you will never, not know what happens in that scene to trigger an emotional response to it. I didn't get emotional either but I still felt awful about the scene and felt its impact, because I was empathetic to both characters. Both versions of the scene are fantastic
