@@inigomontoya7115 -- Mark's rants are incredible because they're always inspired by his incredible love of cinema. He recognizes that Snyder has the passion for film, but he knows he lacks what it really takes to make good films. Snyder lacks the emotional depth, but he has the skill pull off beautiful images. I think once he acknowledged this, he began to go a bit easier on him. He still trashes his movies, because they're awful films, but he's gentler about it.

Sigh. I have seen critics rip apart Rebel Moon for copying Star Wars and Seven Samurai etc. I think Zack sadly has run his course and though I am saddened by the loss of his daughter, I don't think he should be given more money for this series of films. • @WastedPo

The most baffling thing about Zack Snyder to me is the perception that he is a brilliant visual filmmaker. It seems like even people that make fun of his films always say things along the lines of, "He's a bad writer, but his movies are gorgeous. If he simply collaborated with different writers, he'd make great movies!" I know art is all subjective, but I'm not even a fan of him stylistically/aesthetically.

Given that it was based on a long-running manga and thus an extensive story with multiple arcs, reaching a conclusion to the first of those arcs is really the best you could have asked for from a motion picture.

This is a really good critique. Something that ruins so many movies for me is when they don’t conclude the story but end on an undeserved cliffhanger and demand a sequel. They don’t earn another film (or a franchise) through making the best movie they can, they insist on it by leaving the story inconclusive. Before streaming and the incredible ease of cinematic access we have today, I think films tried to avoid this because it was too costly a gamble. But it’s becoming a problem now. I like the Stars Wars Sequel Trilogy more than many, but a big criticism of those three films is they all relied on all three being watched to make sense (and with the mid-production ret-cons they scarcely managed that).

The scen where they were preparing the grains was a very powerful scen. it was showing how the community came together to meet the 5-day deadline. in addition to preparing for battle. The backstories were perfectly timed, giving us a deeper understanding of the characters just when we needed it. I didn't find the pacing slow at all - in fact, I was fully engaged the whole time. It was an absolute crime that Alita didn't get finished. It ended up making close to 4x its budget but Fox being fox had its head up its ass and was more worried about the Disney sale and it was their last movie ever released. Of course this was RIGHT when Disney was making Avengers: Endgame and Alita got literally buried under the absolute mountain of mediocre Marvel movies that followed, then pandemic, then writer's strike. Alita was literally a casualty of 5 years of bad timing.
*NOTE* there are some STRONG rumors that Alita 2 could potentially be in production RIGHT NOW because Avatar 3 is "in the can" and Cameron is basically waiting another whole year while they finish the CGI. That means he has a lot of time to work out the Alita story with (director)Rodriguez and (producer)Landau. Both of which have been subtle hinting that they might be currently working on it.

Well the ironically funny part is I can't argue a single point you made about this movie, but I enjoyed it. You are also correct that no O-scars will be received by this movie. I was yelling at my tv, too, during the last battle. BUT, because the first movie already showed me what to expect, the only part I was legitimately disappointed in was the Jimmy factor. But, then again, if he's THAT overpowered, maybe he shouldn't be relied on exclusively.
As a side Alita, Battle Angel is a guilty pleasure watch for me, much like The Fifth Element. The former, with its clunky dialogue and the latter with its Power Rangers-esque practical villains. Rebel Moon isn't quite there but it's not far off. Maybe we all just had our expectations set too high because we heard Zack Snyder was directing his pitched "Star Wars" movie. Which, btw, I liked the sword fighting in Rebel Moon, too. Keep up the great reviews!
