The scene with Donny’s father, his delivery of the line “Would you see me as less of a man?”, haunting, chilling, gut wrenching. Such an amazing series. Hard to watch but worth it.
Goosebumps just reading this comment - such beautiful storytelling
fav acting moment for me. so succinct and gut punching
Just reading that line makes me tear up
My heart stopped at that scene
He was proud his son was able to tell the world but he could not😢
"The only thing I loved more than her was hating myself."
scene was so hard to watch
This was a gut punch line. I teared up a few times in this show.
I was like - bruh
Jessica Gunning used to live a few doors down from my grandparents before starting acting, and it's been really cool to see her go from being a small side character in doctor who a decade and a half ago to being a major role in the outlaws and now put on such an incredible performance as a lead actress in this show. I really hope she keeps getting roles and gets noticed even more thanks to this show!
What a gem she is! I hope to see a lot more of her.
Oh yes! I remember her from that episode!
She was so amazing in this show, very talented actress! I can’t wait to see where her career goes in the future!
I first saw her in a British show called what remains 10 years ago. She played such a sympathetic and lonely character. She was then in an episode of inside no. 9, playing a minor comedic role. It's great to see her taking a leading role in such a phenomenal show, and got to show her range
I just finished all seven eps on May 1, 2024. All I kept wondering was, who is this actress??? She put me on an emotional roller coaster, with her first cracking me up with her insane laughter to utter outrage over her relentless stalking of Donny. I'm sure Jessica and Richard will get several acting nominations, and hopefully wins, during the next awards season!!!!
I don't think I've seen anything quite like this series. It really brings you into the mind of the protagonist, it's so raw and honest, it's so morally complex and nuanced. It felt like an autobiography come to screen.
It's also so gloriously British, I loved this thing.
Would you say they were both pro and antagonists?
@@tazzatamania Yeah I would. I don't think Donny is a sterling hero...he's someone you can empathize with, be frustrated with, even get angry at. I love how Gaad portrayed himself as someone who makes bad decisions and didn't hide from it
Absolutely BLOWN AWAY by this show. What an immaculate depiction of how unrealized trauma can play out in your life.
Well said
I had the complete opposite reaction as you. I was hooked after just watching a little bit of it. What captured me was the idea that this is how real people act. The script is tight and the direction is fast and punchy. This is the best thing I have seen in a long time.
If someone had told me that I would have to sit through episode 4, I never would have started watching. But I'm glad I did. Baby Reindeer is easily one of the best things I've ever seen on TV, even though I have no desire to ever watch it again.
Having experienced some of the same trauma Donny does in the show (had to look away at few points) I think it is so authentic in how it shows how events/traumas dictate your decision making going forward in life, the self blame and allowing yourself to be happy. I couldn’t recommend this show enough and so glad one of my favourite CZcamsrs/critics has come across it.
I have experienced some of it too and I was blown away. This is the first time I’ve seen that damage portrayed so well. This is so much better than the lifetime and made for tv movies that attempts to.
I’ve had morbid curiosity since I was a little kid and honestly I’ve never been phased by any show before in my entire life. This show messed me up, there was such a specific thing that happened that has also happened to me and I had to just turn it off. Honestly seems like an amazing show though
I am sorry you (and others) went through those things
Today I found out that someone I used to work for was also stalked by this woman. Absolutely terrifying what happened.
This show is astonishing. Real. Honest. Funny. Brutal. Emotional. Therapeutic. My gosh I’m so blown away. Thank you so much for reviewing it
Quite possibly the best depiction of shame I’ve seen on screen. Incredibly well done.

I have never related more to a person and their experiences than I did to Donny/Richard watching this. I just can’t even express how cathartic it is to see experiences you thought you were completely alone in being expressed so sincerely and openly like this. I know this show is resonating with a lot of people but I just couldn’t believe how much I saw myself in what happened to Donny/Richard and how it effected him. This show is so deeply, deeply important to me.
The performances were phenomenal all across the board. I’m glad you mentioned Terri. My wife and I binged it in one night, we couldn’t stop. It stays with you. I watched last week, and I’m still thinking about it. The scene where he breaks down on stage felt so real, and raw, like we’re intruding on a real event. Truly incredible acting from Richard Gadd. It’s based on a true story of what happened to Gadd, so I bet that scene must have been difficult.
Yes Teri is my favorite ❤
I’m so pleased you reviewed this. I wasn’t sure if it would break out the UK.
The series is number one on US Netflix for over a week now.
@@FallenAngelBrass I was clearly wrong and that’s wonderful.
I'm Irish and I'm weirdly proud when Americans like it.
Living here in the UK I wasn’t sure if it was available in the US because nobody on CZcams was reviewing it.
Glad to see you enjoyed it as much as it gave me nightmares.
Any chance of a Shogun review?
Just finished the show and it was AMAZING. I can't believe the main actor was the same guy irl. I couldn't imagine reliving and acting out my traumas.
This actress in this part reminds me of Kathy Bates in Misery...
Totally agree. I thought the same exact thing.
I saw it on the homepage on the weekend laughed it off at what a weird name it was. Then I went to Letterboxd and saw it was actually pretty good so I'm glad you're reviewing this too so I get a more specific opinion
Martha was Inkredible! What a brilliant actress! She will win Awords. Oskar maybe?

I see what You did there 😏

It teaches lessons about ourselves that’s what is great about it, the final scene where he is at the bar with no money and the barman offers him a drink is poignant.
The fact that he is exposing all his mistakes and faults is to be applauded.
Dan doesn't often get the credit he deserves as a critic. This man understands drama, and he's exceptionally good at explaining his insights to a general audience. Baby reindeer was a phenomenal unprecedented show, and I think Dan encapsulated it beautifully. All while still providing his own unique perspective that will help guide first time viewers without spoiling anything too much. Great to hear him review this breathtaking show
Thanks for the kind words!
Baby Reindeer has to be one of the very best pieces of television I have ever seen. The scene with Donny and his parents unwrapping all of their trauma was so well handled and so impactful, it touched me in a way hardly anything on TV ever has. Only word I can muster to describe this show is brave.
Baby Reindeer is good show for 3 episodes, or a very good one... after Episode 4, you'll know it's something else, it's different, because it matters and it becomes Great. If you watch it, you should be grateful for a life lesson, that if you haven't been through something like it, it's gold. This show, their actors, directors, writers have to be present in Awards Season. Don't miss this show, life is hard, harder more to others than to us perhaps, but this why this piece of art, as tragic as it is, it won't hurt you, instead, it will give you something to value about people and life itself.
You couldn’t have said it better
I haven't seen the show yet, but that was beautiful. You and everyone else in the Comments section here--thank-you, sold. I'll watch it.
@@Kris_AB I hope you like it!
I binged it last weekend after seeing it constantly coming up on my twitter timeline. It took some twists boy. Really good stuff. Crazy it's based on a true story.
This show was phenomenal, very hard to see but hard to look away
I binged the series last Sunday. It was extremely powerful, especially knowing it's a true story.
If they come up short in awards season, I don’t think I could matter. It’s an absolute masterwork. It’s not Fatal Attraction. It’s something much more, much deeper. Gadd’s performance, especially in his monologue is remarkable. Just a really exceptional piece of work that goes far away on the surface.
It's heartening to see so many coming on board with this series! I saw it when it first came out and couldn't understand why more reviewers weren't talking about it because, of course, it's incredible. Happy to see word of mouth helping it get visibility.
"I don't know how I can sit through 7 episodes of this" Is EXACTLY my thought. I hear good things about it but I don't know if I'm up for watching 7 episodes of discomfort no matter how "good" the acting and production are. Especially where there is so much other stuff that I enjoy out right now. And I have so much to catch up on.
Well, that was my thought after 3 episodes - it takes a turn after that that’s far less discomfort based
I thought exactly the same thing !!! I first put it on just to have some background noise lol then I got hooked and binge watched it all.
@@lolitapinicka568same 😂
You’ll be glad you did watch it. I cannot recommend it enough
I came here to see if anyone else felt the same. So cringey and uncomfortable. I only finished episode one! Sounds like it might be worth the torture to keep on.
Really glad you reviewed this, keep up the good work Dan!
I normally stay away from shows like this. I hate the trend for the last decade, where it seems like many scenes in a dark drama are played solely for shock value. However, Baby Reindeer is NOT that type of show. It’s haunting, brilliant, scary, sad, frustrating and so damn honest and human. I had to fast forward through some of the assault scenes in episode 4- glad there was a warning- but I started watching this yesterday afternoon and couldn’t tear myself away. I watched the whole thing in one sitting. This is so well done.
Glad you reviewed this, i checked it out a week or so ago and felt crazy that I couldn't find anyone else talking about it. Extremely well done. Emotional, upsetting, but a great watch.
I watched this entire thing in one go and I was the complete opposite each episode kept me wanting more, while I was also screaming at the tv at all the crazy parts that several family members came knocking on my door asking if I was okay lmao. This was such a great show and I can definitely relate to Donny in some parts of the story that really made it such an emotional experience for me. I have recommended this show to so many people since watching it and I hope I see everyone involved in other projects in the future!
I dont know if this the type of show for me, but I'm glad I heard about it from Dan
Thanks for reviewing and recommending this series. I will check it out and thank you for pointing out that the warnings are not there for CYA reasons.
Definitely checking this out. Thanks, Dan 😎
Great video Dan, thanks for the informative review.
I went into it expecting an entertaining starker story and was blown away by how brilliant it turned out to be. A gorgeous exploration of of a survivor and the many darker, uglier implications that stories never touch. Easily the best thing I've seen in a long time.
Great analysis Dan. The dark turns are so sinister, so real, and effected me in a truly emotional way- I have not yet finished the series but wow. It is rare you see a confessional be so stunningly honest. And the result is not only brutal but exquisitely moving (at least what I have seen so far).
I just binged the show today. It was an intense experience that I think perfectly encapsulates the complex process behind masochism. It will accompany me for a while…
Thanks for the recommendation. I saw it pop up on my Netflix and wasn't sure if it was for me, but after your review, I'll give it a shot!
Appreciate how you handled my temperamental comment day or 2 ago.
Was a lil off beat for me.
Great review! Will add to my list!
Amazing performances and probably the most emotionally complex story I've ever seen. Really hope Gadd and Gunning wins some serious awards.
That speech...😢
Loved this show. Emotionally raw and vulnerable .
I also loved Jessica Gunning in the pivotal supporting role of Siân James in the 2014 film "Pride" 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Dan, was really looking forward to hear what an American reviewer would say about this show :)
i really liked it, in the episode when he's in Edinburgh, the pub they filmed outside of is right near where i live it felt weird to see on a netflix show
2:50 I recognized Jessica Gunning from the British comedy Back with Mitchell & Webb. I found her to be so charismatic, even though she has a minor role. This role is a total 180 for her. I have yet to see the series, but I saw the trailer. I hope she gets nominated, but this next Emmys my full support goes to Anna Sawai. She did such a fantastic job in Shogun! A veritable tour de force!
Thank you for reviewing this. I will check it out. :)
Great review for a difficult show, Dan. Maybe you should put a minor spoiler warning in the beginning.
I broke down in tears for them and for me a number of times. Thank you for the review.
This review is why I'm gnna check it out. Thanks as always for the reccomend Dan!
Excellent review!
I only watched this series because it was directed by the same person that directed The End of the F-ing world. Man I'm glad I watched. I was yelling at my tv 70% of this series, then saying okay Donny I know you're trying your best but please get some help. Best character is Donny's dad. From him dealing with Martha's calls to him supporting Donny when it all came out. The actor that plays Martha was amazing. Suoer talented 10/10
Just heard about this on UK breakfast tv this morning. Bit of a discussion about which actors are playing which comedians etc
Jessica Gunning or Anna Sawai (Shogun) for this year's Best Actress Mini-Series Emmy? Very tough choice!
The last episode where Donny and Martha are looking into each others eyes and they both are shedding a tear, it made me think of how linked these two people are. I was sad for both of them. They're like twin flames (in a non new agey way) it just means they're attached to each other because of an experience they both shared on the opposite end of the spectrum. Well done... I wonder if the real Martha is going to see this show.
Definitely an incredible example of word of mouth. I consider myself to ne super clued in on new tv and film but had never heard of this until my friends all started talking about it.
I watched with my kids ages 7 to 12.. We loved it
Excellent review and observations of this show.
Doesn't sound for me but glad a good thing got some exposure.
Great review
This show deserves awards because it’s the perfect portrayal of tough topics. I think people who have experienced certain traumas will sit up and recognize how powerful it is. Many people know someone who has spiraled and it appears they just threw their life away, and I hope after they watch this, they learn empathy for that person.
Was not expecting the show to be so emotional by the end. Also the Edinburgh festival episode is the stuff of nightmares
I watched this series late at night the day it came out completely on a whim and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. But I’m the only one in my family and friends who appreciates really dark stuff like this, so I haven’t been able to discuss it with anyone and have just been trolling video essays and reviews. I hate how the fandom has become, but I’m glad at least that people are seeing it as toxic behavior
Wow.... Just finished watching it this minute!! ☺️ excellent show!
I couldn't agree more the actress that played Martha was Incredible in this show
What a great review. Unexpectedly great show.
I just watched the show and wanted to come back to say thank you for your recommendation. "Baby Reindeer" really got to me.
I haven't heard of this show, but I might take a look later this year.
Wow...I just finished this last night and was so blown away at the complex nature of the series. Easily the best new thing on Netflix and one of best limited series on TV at least in the past 5 years. I actually at first thought it was a comedy as that's how it starts but man it takes a very dark turn episodes later. One of my favorite movies ever is 1987 Fatal Attraction and Martha rivals Alex Forrest and perhaps surpasses her. One thing this series does is highlight the mental health sickness Martha has. This is a person who has legit mental health sickness.
Bringing us content some of us may not have watched otherwise. I will be checking it out. Thanks Dan!
Dan, so happy you took the time to review this show. It's one of the most stunning series that Netflix has put out and I am overjoyed it's getting the attention that it deserves.
Hey Dan, two questions, when will we get the Fallout review you said you preparing and will their be any more segments on Movie theaters?
Thanks fo your great work and time
I agree with most of your insights. Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning have both realistically portrayed their parts well in the series. You know how it isn’t always easy to strip away every part of them to act out such mentally disturbed characters finding their places in this visually compelling and visually catastrophic world that we all live in.
Absolutely amazing series. Can't stop thinking about it.
My fiancé asked why I would watch a show that made me cringe. I didn't know how to express how quickly I got sucked into the story. Yes, it was HARD to watch. But I haven't seen something like this before and I'm so glad I watched
This is one of the best, most engrossing series I've ever watched. Definitely a big and most welcome surprise.
I need a spoiler review of the show. Twisted and tragic, also made me extremely mad and confused at the end
I bet the fight scene climax between Batman vs Superman hits a little differently after watching this for most people. "MARTHAAA?!"
Stopped watching after episode three. Thanks as always for your reviews and insights. Now I’m going to finish it.
This was a roller coaster 🎢 of a series, i don’t know how i feel anymore 😂😂
Loved it some episodes and hated it on several episodes
Are you serious? If so ….🤯🤯🤯🤣
I binged the whole 7 episodes yesterday night. Definitely very tough to watch but I wanted to see how the show played out
In my opinion, episode 4 was some of the greatest exposition I've ever seen on film.
ok.. gotta watch it

Jessica Gunning was a scene stealer in a comedy role in Stephen Merchant's TheOutlaws
Saw this very twisty, torchered psyodrama. Well done
"Tortured "
OH please do not reveal the reindeer thing :(
communication, or rather the lack of communication, is always (100% of the time) what writers use to create this drama. donny lacks communication skills. doesn't communicate properly. doesn't communicate to authorities. etc etc etc. he deserves to be in the situation he caused. he could've easily gotten out of that situation if he just communicated properly and not beating around the bush. just like so many ppl irl. it's so annoying and done over and over and over.
I think you're missing a huge amount of what the show was trying to say - once Donny's full trauma is revealed, it ceases to become a simple lack of communication. That's what I thought at first too, but it's not just lack of communication. It's a product of his trauma. If you watch the whole show and feel he deserved the situation he was in, that seems very callous and unsympathetic.
I was not ready for how much this show was going to affect me. Episode 4 was a lot for me and I really needed to recollect before continuing. It’s an incredible show but it’s HARD to watch
It doesn't sound like something I could watch, but I might check out the last few minutes of the last episode, just to see how it ends.
One of… perhaps THE most profound series I have ever watched. Sure not everyone will either enjoy (I use that word advisedly) it or like it and many definitely won’t understand it but the truth this series tells is one that’s rarely mentioned or even tolerated. The acting was extraordinary but you failed to mention the wonderfully written and performed character of the Trans woman who plays his love interest. I felt that performance opened minds and doors on its own merits. I will watch the series again, but not yet. I still have much to process with the first pass and rejoice in the fact that a production that I would normally pass over, get bored with, feel too uncomfortable to watch or just plain ignore, I actually stopped to take note and give it the moment it deserved. I’m so glad I did just that. I sincerely hope they throw every award at it that’s available.
I did mention her!
I binged this yesterday. It’s really fraking good.
I enjoyed it, excellent acting but what a train wreck of horrible “what not to do” decisions!
Haven't heard of it until now, but Dan has never failed me and I'm sure he won't this time! #addtowatchlist
Last year it was beef and now baby reindeer, emmys here we go
First show I’ve binged in awhile
