How to Clean Old Dried Oil Stains from Concrete Driveway

- Autozone Brake cleaner and clean rags will do the trick....My 1st video was on freshly spilled oil and some old stained oil in the concrete, but this is a few stains from my BMW while it was parked over a years time..Follow along and give it a thumbs up.. BTW..this method also works on spilled oil on Pavers..The trick is to spray thru the straw that breaks up the oil and you can actually see that and wipe it up with paper towels or a rag before it settles back down on the floor, otherwise you are just moving the oil around.

You are a life saver!!! There was some bar and chain oil that had a hole in it in the back of my truck that spilled all over a customers driveway. We put some dawn dish soap on it asap and tried to scrub it off but it didn't do hardly anything. I contacted several pressure washing guys in the area but only one responded but didn't seem interested in the job. I was trying to hire someone to take care of this issue that we had created for a customer of ours. After many Google searches and mixed reviews I came across this video. I figured I'd give it a try as I couldn't find anyone else to do it. Needless to say after 1 and half cans of the autozone break cleaner you would never even know there was oil on the driveway. I did it exactly how you did. Sprayed and cleaned it up quick with paper towel. Sir I really appreciate you posting this video. I was smiling from ear to ear as the oil just disappeared. The customer could not believe how well it worked and neither could I. Less than 15 minutes of being there and the problem was solved.
Great job..that will now cost you to Subscribe..lol..I have tried everything on my cement and this Autozone brand of brake cleaner works the best and the straw gives it that extra spray pressure .
Thanks for watching..
@@alyoungcuda Done! New subscriber here. Definitely worth it!
😊 thanks..
Thanks for the comment. Same issue but I had refrigerant oil in a harbor freight chainsaw that leaked onto teo customers front porches. Going to try this in the morning along with pressure washer.
Break cleaner looks the best out of the
options on the internet
@@Midwest116I never even had to use a pressure washer. It may come back as a light shadow but use this method again and it will disappear. Most people would have been fine with the results after one use but this particular customer was picky. Good luck!
Thanks for taking the time to make this video, it really works. I followed the exact steps you showed and am amazed! Spray and wipe quick is key
Wipe up so it doesn't soak back in for sure..then mother natures rain will do the rest..Thanks for watching...
Been watching videos all afternoon and no product worked as well or with less steps as what you used. Thank you for posting this.
Great product but unfortunately that brand is discontinued because of a specific ingredient..but i found it in a brand named champion sold in advance auto parts..autozone had it for a few weeks and then took it off the shelf.. hopefully you can still find some. I kept a case of the old stuff once they said they are discontinued..good luck and thanks for watching too...
Wow Brother, this works like a charm. I had an oil stain for about 3 yrs I'd say the size was about 2ft by 3 ft. I already had some AutoZone brake cleaner and followed your suggestions. Had just enough to finish and since I have a Carport I don't get any of the Acid Rain on it, so i took some Dawn afterwords to get out the rest of the oil swirl marks, looks great now. Thanks again 👍👍👍👍
That's Awesome on a 3 Year old stain..Thanks for the Compliments and Thanks for Watching...
Al! I finally did it yesterday!!! OMG what a success!!! I took photos, no video though...I don't know how to load photos, but my original comment was 8 months ago & the oil stain was there even earlier, so this def works on old oil stains. I also rinsed the stain further w/ boiled hot water, then scrubbed stain more w/ a cup of bleach & Dawn Platinum dish liquid. But make no mistake the brake cleaner did the job! 😎🤯❤
Great to hear the success stories..and mother nature works on it too afterwards.I always keep a few cans handy just in case..lol
Thanks for making this video. I was trying to find out how to remove oil stains from my driveway. I tried this today and it did the job. Thank you.

I used acetone on the 70 year old stains in the garage at this house we just bought. Cheaper than brake cleaner. But laundry detergent worked even better. It is very cheap. Just requires about three applications.
Interesting, but definitely keep the fumes from ignition which is the dangerous part of using that cleaner...
@@alyoungcuda Acetone evaporates quickly. Which is why it takes three applications to clean anything with it. It is not as volatile as something like gasoline.
Fantastic, I looked into so many videos and didn't think it'd be possible to do it so easily with this method, considering my large transmission oil stain was like 2/3 years old. The brake cleaner cleaned 80% of it and the rest isn't that visible as it was before, I do recommend however to just soak up the liquid instead of wiping it as in my case I made some stains larger than they were before by spreading them, so it took longer to clean them
Basically It is soaking it up before it settles back down into the ground..thanks for the tips and thanks for watching too...
@ Al Young….you deserve a gold medal good man. Thank you for this awesome solution. Worked perfectly!
It did right..I tried so many chemicals until I found the right brand..

Brake cleaner/aerosol degreasers with a nylon brush worked great for me. A+ video! Dawn dish soap and pressure washing do nothing.
You needed to use a brush? You can see the oil lift up at times to. Thanks for watching...
@@alyoungcuda It seemed to work better when I broke it up with the brush. My oil was brand new and clean (no dirt in it yet). I accidentally double-gasketed my oil filter so I sprayed 5 quarts all over the driveway. I've done every oil change on my family's vehicles for the pat 15 years and still can't believe I made such a rookie mistake. 🤦♂
@@Bournefort it happens, wait till the filter slips out of your hand and into the pan and it splashes all over the ground...been there..😆
Have the paper towel ready in front of the spray to pick up the oil when it comes lose, spray towards the paper towel.
Definitely, have to pick up the oil before it settles in again...
I LOVE THIS. I think if I try this, I will set up a lint of kitty litter to catch the oil/brake cleaner. That way you will let the kitty litter do the work of the paper towels and might even end up using less brake cleaner in the process but this is awesome! Thanks for the idea.
Buy the new brand that is out, made by champion sold in autozone..it has the same ingredients as the can shown, other brands do not work. Good luck with yours.
Try using gasoline and kitty liter.
Apply the gasoline to the stain. Then pour kitty liter over the stain. Crush the kitty liter into the stain with your shoe. Then apply more gasoline. You should notice the kitty litter absorbing the stain. Sweep up the kitty liter and wash with dawn and water.
@@NeverGiveUp-ib3xbnot recommending gasoline on my videos for safety sake.
@alyoungcuda so I did try your method. I didn't use kitty litter as I didn't think it would work. I think your wiping up the liquid is acting as a scrubbing of sorts. Mother nature takes care of the rest..rain,sun..it works out great for me..better than the oil stain look...
You’re a lifesaver mate. Tried everything under the fucking sun, apparently all it took was some shite quality brake cleaner and a rag to mop the oil up. Came up straight away lol👏🏼👏🏼
Beautiful..Thanks for watching
This is great. I have heaps of oil stains out the front of my house on asphalt. I’m gonna give the break cleaner a go
Let me know how it works on asphalt ...never tried that yet..
Does that work on asphalt. I used oil lift from Canadian Tire, didn't really help much. Do you think this will work on asphalt
Haven't tried it ..might try it on a stain in my street soon..if you try it let me know if it works...if I do it in the next few days I will post it..
Once it is loosened up, it floats on water, so pressure wash it afterwords before it has a chance to dry so you have to be quick and do small spots at a time. Great find though man. I have black diesel oil on my driveway and will be trying this as well.
Let me know how it worked out for you but the quick drying of the cleaner prevents you from the power washer..thats why the rag or towel will pick it up fast.
@@alyoungcuda Then maybe put down some dish detergent at the same time? Make it mix while the blast floats it to the top? I'm thinking on my feet here. Desperate for a clean up that works. I'll let you know hopefully.
@@garrykennedy5484 what I have heard from some feedback is once you try something else, it comprised the oil in the cement and it won't clean up...

As long as you didn't try another product or fix that might of contaminated it, it should work out for you. Thanks for watching..
Brake cleaner is expensive right now and this method does work for I guess cleaning heavy spots. You should pressure wash the driveway after using the brake clean to see what it looks like after being washed.
Mother nature took care of that..as good as new..much better than before...I pressure wash every few years...on sale its a good deal..they are about 4.00 a can..but still better than buying other products and getting no results..this is money well spent...
Use gasoline and kitty liter
I have done this too and I found if I put some cat litter on the other side of the oil stain and then sprayed it, the litter soaked up the liquid immediately and cut down the spread.
Interesting, but then you have litter to pick up..😆
Does it remove stains fully absorbed. I got the oil up mostly but there is an outline left if that makes sense. How do I removed that? TY!
Once a majority of the oil stain is out, mother nature took care of the rest with the rain and sun, hopefully your stain is out in the open. I give it a break for a few days if its that heavily soaked.
@@alyoungcuda TY very much!
@@teejay1102 you're welcome, it looks like a little outline on a map, but it will disappear and Thanks for Watching too...

Definitely
I tried this 1n 2022 works pretty good but if you got really big spots better get a case cause I had probably 30 40 drops of oil used an easy 2 cans

The break cleaner works nice. The best way is to use a propane torch and try to not get oil on your concrete.
Spreads it if you don't pick it up with the towel..it's explained in the video..it lifts it up and you need to soak it up before it settles down again..otherwise all you did was dilute it and moved it.

what if the grease deposit is in a garage where you cant just power wash the residue away??
Thats why I use a cleaner only in those areas.
What did you use to rub the brake cleaner with?
Disposable shop towels
@@alyoungcuda thank you very much!! You're a life saver
My husband’s truck had an oil leakage and stained the asphalt, and the cement on the entrance of the driveway is so bad that the association wrote us a letter. I was told, to use muriatic acid. I hired a handyman to do the job. Now when I look at those stains, the asphalt looks worst than before, I don't know what to do to fix it. I'm going right now to the store to buy what you are recommending to use on the driveway. I will be back with my upcoming results.
Hopefully the acid didn't stain it worse..and make it deeper in the concrete
I guess the acid had something to do with the fact that this method didn’t worked on the stains of my driveway concrete.
Its like washing a stain on your clothes, once you try something and wash it its now on there permanently
Can you wash the break cleaner away with water, after you spray? Or does it have to be wiped with a cloth?
Wiping with the cloth or towels takes the oil away after the brake cleaner breaks it up..if you notice when you watch it, the cleaner breaks up the oil and lifts it up and moves it as you spray..if you allow it to settle back down then all you did was just move the stain... think of the towel as the bounty quicker picker upper..you transfer the oil to the towel...
So after I use the rag I use the hose to wash it off?
No need for water, mother nature will take care of the rest..you should see the oil break up and that's why you use the rag to soak it up before it settles back down
Unfortunately this brand is impossible to find or order in Canada. Options are Motomaster, Certified, or CRC. Some are non-chlorinated. Any recommendations you can provide on alternative brands and chlorination or not would be SO appreciated! Also, is this safe to do inside of an apartment parkade (i.e., not outside)? Thank you! Hoping I can use this magic on very old stains.
Crc didn't work well on old stains, but what you can do is try all the brands you can buy and you can let us all know what other ones will work. And yes it will work on an inside parking garage on the cement...
@@alyoungcuda Thanks for the quick reply and ruling out CRC. Will give it a go. Non-chlorinated or chlorinated? Thanks!

czcams.com/video/iTjuJzLpIwg/video.html
What if you pressure washed after??
You can but the brake cleaner is what breaks up the oil thats why as soon as you see it break up you soak it up with towels so as it won't sink back into the cement
Needed a cheap way to get stains off my driveway. I'm surprised there aren't more videos of people trying this
I tried cat litter, oil dry, carb cleaner, simple green..everything..its not for older dried stains..you need a cleaner that breaks up the oil and sinks into the cement to lift it up..thats the reason for the towels to soak it up before it settles in again .
A kind of bracke cleaner did you use

czcams.com/video/iTjuJzLpIwg/video.html
What brake cleaner is that ?
Autozone brand..the others don't work..and use it with the straw
Will this work on pavers as well?
One customer did use on a paver driveway and it worked, but becareful since some pavers have color, it might change the color but it will be better than an oil stain I guess..try it in a spot and respond back. Make sure you buy the new version made by champion sold at autozone...other brands suck.
Great job. The brake fluid seems to displace the oil but the towels are spreading it. Would it be better to use kitty liter or other absorbent to remove the oil instead of spreading a portion of it
The idea with the towel is to soak it up to prevent the spreading but also to visually see the oil break up..mother nature takes care of the rest once you have picked it up.
Oh wow!! Really want to try this! Does it have to be autozone brand? I see a few from Autozone but not that particular brand.
They have started to phase this model out because of some chemicals in it but I have tried a few other brands and they didn't work..the new can that they replaced it with sucks. Some Autozone stores still have some left..I have to try and find a replacement soon...

Cover it with kitty litter immediately. The litter absorbs the brake cleaner and oil right away. Then sweep it up. Takes just few minutes.
Will try that the next time I make a mess..but My Cats might not like Me afterwards from taking their stuff..lol
Will this work on asphalt?
Have not tried it yet..if you do let me know if it does
Why not spray around perimeter and push to center of stain rather then pushing it out making larger circle stain? Or dab it up rather then spread it around?
I do but to show in the video that the stain will come out and what happens when you don't dab it up before it settles back into the cement..believe me It works...

I didn't think it would work on that but thanks for trying, hadn't had a chance to verify it doesn't work on blacktop
Man I have an old oil stain on my driveway that just will not come out. I've tried numerous methods and cleaners and the best I've been able to do is to make it fade a little bit, but not come out. I've had oils stains before that I've been able to remove with Purple Power degreaser (my usual go-to product for driveway oil spills - works like a champ most of the time) but this one just won't budge. Then I used the brake cleaner, and.. boom! Gone in like three minutes. I've spent hours on that spot before, with very little success.
Worked like a Charm right?
Thank you. Was looking for a comment that said it works even after trying other methods and this was it. Sounds like my situation... very little success so far so going to try this.
What is that you’re using?!
Brake cleaner but only that particular brand works, read my comments, there is another brand autozone sells under the champion brand.
maybe after you spray the stain with the brake cleaner...immediately put saw dust on it...maybe much better
Maybe but who has sawdust hanging around at the house? You keep sawdust in your pantry or garage?
Just buy a bag from the saw dust place
Or cat litter
Those look like brand new oil stains…you sure those are old?
I used 2 cans of brake cleaner and did the same thing and it didn’t take the stains out (power steering fluid that’s been there for a few months)
That oil stain is definitely old, from a car thats sits all year. What brake cleaner brand are you using and did you try any other chemical before the brake cleaner use.

Nice! Now pressure wash your driveway bro! 😹 Update... It didn't work on old oil stains on my driveway (older than 3yrs old).
Were you able to buy the brake cleaner that I used in this video? Autozone don't sell this one anymore, the replacement brand sucks..so far I think the blaster brand might be a good replacement, but I don't have an oil leak to try it out on. All the other brands suck.
My wife if bustin my ass to clean the oil off the driveway, I wish I could have gotten a dog instead
Thats Funny..😆
All it did to my driveway was to make the stains spread out.
You need to soak it up when you see the cleaner break up the oil..if not then it just moves the oil around...you go thru alot of towels..don't reuse the towels with the oil on them..it just transfers it back...
You have to hold hands, with close ones and strangers alike, and pray for its removal.
Will this work against synthetic oil?
It should, never tried to fiqure out if it was synthetic oil but I have spilled synthetic oil before and it cleaned up fine..to me, an oil spill is an oil spill..try it and report back if it worked for you.
Why are you wiping against the grain?
Doesn't matter which way,as soon as you spray the cleaner on, you will see the oil break up, and you need to wipe it up with the rag before it settles down again.

I thought of that but it seems to be pushing the oil into the center more and the chance of it getting deeper into the cement pores..where as pushing it out will dilute it as you can see it lifts up the oil and you pick it up with towels..if saving on cleaner is your thing then you might as well leave the oil stains there. Cleaning up will cost you like any oil clean up..ask ExxonMobil
@@alyoungcuda hey why not use Dawn detergent on oil it supposed to have worked out with the ducks on oil spills trying it soon if it works try it also yourself and do a video on it I don't do CZcams videos to old my friend!
@@jessemoreno9250 I will try dawn and see what it does..guess it won't dry as fast and you need a brush..
@@alyoungcuda hey I'm going to try this weekend not from Any you tube channel just to see if lt works with a strong brush let you know doing Sunday after you can do a video on it ok My friend
@@jessemoreno9250 if it doesn't work, I believe then using brake cleaner will not work afterwards because you contaminated the spot with the dawn...
Well that’s one expensive way to do it
Try something else and let us know how much it is..I think it will come out cheaper in the long run..
@@alyoungcuda Try goof off only $11 at Home Depot Works great also
@@alyoungcuda I work with brake cleaner a lot and it runs out extremely quick and it’s not cheap either but it works awesome can’t deny
@@jlomeli07 autozone lasts better than the others.
@@jlomeli07 didn't work on my stains.
were these old or new oil stains?
What's considered old..since july of 2019
But even older ones work..they need to soak into the concrete but dont let it dry out because then it's still there..use new towels everytime
@@alyoungcuda how about stains sitting for 10 years?
@@ThomasBMawn ☺ Just curious if u tried it yet? If so, how did it turn out?
No doubt it works ... but way too expensive..
depending on how much of a mess it is but it works the best..trick is as you see it break up the oil, soak it up with towels and don't let it settle back down and dry..but no worries..by the time you spend money on other chemicals, you'll be back..Good Luck
Why can I smell this video
Scratch and Sniff is an Option Soon...😆
Respectfully it will take too long, too much brake cleaner to get rid of the size of oil stain you have. Brake cleaner might be an ok first step for dried oil stains, but a lot of follow up is needed.
Not at all but all stains are different
Wtf is he using omg!!! He never said!!! Looks like break cleaner tho. Or maybe wd 40? Had to edit to add that last part
My 1st 14 seconds it was mentioned at :14, but read the comments, that brand is discontinued and I found another brand..
