Cleaning Oil Stains From Concrete Was An Epic Failure! *Not What I Expected*

- 👋 Today I fail at attempting to remove oil stains from my driveway. Previous owners had junky cars and they did not keep them in proper maintenance and oil leaked from them so much! The driveway and street were left with massive oil stains in the concrete and pavement. So today I try using oil and grease remover specifically designed to clean oil from concrete and even try some home remedies using cola and baking soda to remove oil. It helped a bit but really was a waste of time and didn't do much. Power washing the driveway cleaned it up nicely. But I did not have good luck removing the oil stains. If you have tips on what I could do better or how to properly remove oil stains from concrete for a low cost, let me know!

We had decent results in our shop using brake clean, then Gain liquid laundry detergent, then good old pressure washer (going close and slow with the spray nozzle).

All the methods online I tried as well no luck and I put some major work into this customers driveway over 2 full days.
Yeah after a year these spots are a lot lighter. So seems to just take time and the sun will slowly pull out the oil. I've poured bleach on them and that seems to help too with the sun

Only two things I found that work is Acetone using a paper towel to absorb after pouring on stain and also another method you can use brake cleaner and paper towel to absorb.

did a quick search cause yesterday i had old oil end up on a section of my garage floor, oven cleaner came up in the search

@@BrosFOURRSpeed Yeah im project manager for a highway paving company. We do spall repairs in concrete roads and bridge decks. Seems extreme for your issue but it would be basically grinding down no more an inch and using a high strength resurfacer. Again this is typically on roadways and bridge decks where no one is standing on top of the finish product.. In your instance the patch would probably bug u just as much or more than the oil stain. Also not sure if you have freeze cycles where you are but be careful. Too harsh of chemicals will definitely cause surface flaking after a cold winter. It begins to weaken the cement that's holding the sand, stone and slag/grancem together.
Oh wow. Yeah we don't get much freezing. But I'm not spending the money on that kind of repair lol

Try krud kutter. Its a spray bottle says cleaner/ degreaser. Might work too.

LOL I felt weird doing it! But the oil spots were right in front of my house. Made my house look like trash. The spots on the street are nearly all gone now. Still have some driveway spots that need a bit more work
Me looking back on the time where I was 12, changing oil in my focus and I forgot to put the drain plug back in 😭

I would try a torch to vaporized the oil. In my mind, liquids wouldn't work. Even if the "cleaners" pulled the oil from the concrete, where would it go? Down the driveway? This would just transfer the stain to somewhere else.

Yeah good point! These have faded a lot in the last 2 years tho! Pouring a little bit of bleach on them and having it in the sun seemed to help

Oven cleaner
Oven cleaner can be a very effective treatment for oil stains on concrete. Simply spray the target area with oven cleaner and let it settle for ten minutes. Use a hard bristle brush to scrub it clean and rinse with a hose. Repeat the process until the stain is removed.Jun 16, 2020

Try Pull It Out, it’s made by CHOMP, I bought it from Amazon, it worked on my pavers.

I tried that it doesn’t work! 9 months later I had another kid.
My neighbor bought some expensive fluid to clean up oil stains on his pavers. He even tried his 2400psi power washer. Both failed. I saw a CZcams using a torch and that worked. With my propane torch I applied heat to his oil stains and sure enough it worked. The flame vaporizes the oil. Wear safety glasses and gloves. The oil spots will disappear.
I'll have to try that. These have lightened up a lot in the last year. So next time I power wash the driveway I'll give that a shot too!
Pour-N-Restore works surprisingly well, I'm buying more today.
Things I've seen work
• Dawn
• Pour-N-Restore
• Goof Off concrete cleaner
Note: the goof off and Pour-N-Restore are very similar
• Acetone (this eats all oil period)
• A torch targeting the concrete, it will being the oil to the surface and burn it off. Get rid of the ugly black old engine oil from the surface first
What was a complete flop
• Coke
• Gasoline (generally breaks down oils (like vs like) but Gasoline has oil in it
Oh nice! Bleach and the sun has actually helped over the last year. They are almost gone now, but seems like it's been a slow wait for it to fade and get pulled out by the sun
Makes me wonder 🤔 how oil 🛢 can get into concrete like that. Other than busting up the driveway and laying it new- too expensive i reckon Content! Interesting video!
Really a shame the previous homeowner didn't get his oil leak fixed or at least he could have thrown a piece of plywood under to soak the oil up

I have the same problem over here...I thought I was the only one "working for nothing"
Over time these spots have slowly started to lighten up. I actually put bleach on them and just let it sit. They are getting lighter, still there. But I think over time the sun is helping to lighten them up

I'm thinking since concrete is porous and it has absorbed the oil deeper than the surface layer, we need something to pull it up and out from more than just the surface.
Even though it's an old oil stain, maybe something absorbent like cat litter will draw it out? Maybe leave it on the stain for a day or two (granted it doesn't rain) and compare the results. Could be worth a shot and it's inexpensive. What are your thoughts?

A torch will heat the concrete and burn off much of the deep oil. Not fast but pretty effective
Need to work on the grass lawn next.
haha we had just moved in! It's much better now, but the grass in these yards turns brown when it's winter
You need Chomp brand "pull it out stain remover". Leave it on for a few days in the sun. Then power wash it off 3600 PSI 25 degree tip

You can also use gasoline and oil dry

Sweep real thin layer sand topping mix over the whole driveway. Work it in real good. Then water, Super fine mist it all, no drops, fine mist till damp, then wet but no run off. Can look like new pour if done right or Horrible Mess if done wrong. You better research it a bit and practice on somebody else's concrete
Massive dousing with brake parts cleaner, cover with kitty litter, crunch it in by playing chubby checker and doing the twist. Let’s sit two days.

pour that shit straight out the bottle and scrub and then pour more and scrub your life out and then pour more and scrub and pour more and scrub and do that for like 30-45 mins and pressure wash it away with 25 degree nozzle kinda close and really slow. pressure washer needs to be gas and have like 3000 psi
I did for a bit right out of the bottle. They have lightened up. But I gave up on it lol
Sand blasting
Wouldnt that just wear down the surface? The oil is down into the concrete. Eroding the driveway seems like it'd make indentions

That’ll likely work, just be sure to use PPE when using it. Stuff is dangerous and will eat your skin
Use brake cleaner and immediately wipe it up
