    I think most people cannot imagine how gut-wrenchingly horrible northern winter warfare must have been in the extreme cold. Also the Finns are probably the most scary enemy to face in this kinda warfare also!
    The white death is an amazing story which really shows this to be true.
    Love ya Finland from ya neighbor country!

    Waiting for hours is pretty common for modern Snipers. One big difference between him and Snipers in the military today (other than the fact he didn't use a scope) is that Snipers today usually go in pairs of two. One behind the gun the other with "spotting" and keeping lookout.

    Dave was wondering about spotting snipers in modern warfare. One thing we have to remember about Finland. 2/3 of the country is covered in forest. So you can quite easily hide yourself there with proper clothing with IR cover etc. There isn't such optics developed yet on drones or satellites that can find you. You'll never be found.

    White Death is about Simo Hayha, a Finnish sniper who has over 500 confirmed kills OF ALL TIME. He ate snow, never used a telescopic sight and would eat the same slice of bread for hours just so he wouldn't be seen. He ate snow to conceal his breath, never used a telescopic sight because the glint of the glass reflecting the Sun would reveal his position and he would eat INCREDIBLY slowly while holed up in the snow so he wouldn't be detected by enemies. A true legend, and he survived. Towards the end of the war he fought in, he sustained a permanent injury to the side of his jaw, which caused him to be unconscious for the last 11 or so days of said war. There was one time where the enemies (I think the Soviets?) had began bombarding his position with artillery, and he just didn't move.
    Edit: 4:04 Yes, that's correct. He'd stay, lying in a mound of snow for hours and hours on end, still, WAITING for his prey.

    @MrBanaanipommi Před 2 lety +6

    officially he has about 750 kills confirmed, about 250 with SMG called Suomi Kp and 500 kills with his rifle. he did not use scope because it would lift his head up too much and also enemy could detect him by sunlight reflecting from the scope. also he ate snow while shooting enemies stealth so the steam wont let enemy see him. in the end, he said he was done what he was asked as good as he could. nothing more!.
