The war Simo Häyhä fought in was the Winter War (Talvisota in finnish), 30.11.1939-13.3.1940 (105 days). Sabaton has a song about it - Talvisota -
The Soviet Union/ russians attacked Finland with the objective of conquering the whole country in matter of weeks.
Instead Finland stopped one of the biggest armies in the world with Sisu, skiis and molotov cocktails... And men like Simo Häyhä. It also helped that the winter was one of the coldest in record.
Even though Finland fought with succes, there simply were not enough supplies, men or allies and we had to agree to peace terms that lost us 12% of the country. The soviets payed for it a high price, out of their around 1 million men, they had at least 123 000 dead or missing and 190 000 wounded, propably more.
Russians don't like to talk about a war against country of 3,5 million citizens, that they screwed up so bad Hitler thought invading Russia would be easy...
Considering Finland had less than 350 000 soldiers in all (of them 25 904 dead or missing, 43 557 wounded), it is source of national pride as you can imagine. Finland avoided the soviet occupation during the cold war years, unlike the countries south of us that were taken over in ww2.
fun fact: finns were not the first to use them (spanish civil war) but we DID name the Molotov cocktails after the soviet foreign minister Vjatšeslav Molotov. Since he claimed that the bombs dropped on our capital were bread baskets, we sent him something to drink ;)

The best definition of Sisu is in this historical context: the Finns have fought 47 wars against the Russians, the never 'won' but they never pussied out either, and in every war the Finns cause more casualties than the Russians. The quintessential example is the battle of Lake Suomissalmi where the Finns inflicted 1000:1 kill ratio against the fucking soviets. The soviets eventually won the Winter war because of overwhelming manpower and resources. But I can imagine a world where the Finns had allied support or American support and the fucking communists were crushed.

Most likely a bit late, but there's one detail about Simo Häyhä that got left out.
He never used a scope and favored standard ironsights for 2 reasons.
One, the glint from the sun might reveal his position as it did for several of his counter-snipers.
Two, and not entirely sure if true, but using a scope would force him to lift his head ever so slightly higher.

Sisu - has no direct English translation. Courage, endurance, determination, grit - yes! Easier to say than ANZAC spirit (Gallipoli/Kokoda/Kapyong/Khe Sanh) - economy of words is Finnish too! Simo was not just a good sniper, he worked in team with 32 other Finns to repel 5000 Russians! The riff is also reminiscent of Dio "Dream Evil" era!.... Chris Rohrland and Tommy Johansson guitars since 2012 and 2016 respectively.... Those backing vocals from 10:44 remind me of the band Ghost - might be just the effect used on the voices - but I like it! Good job guys!

Thanks to you guys, I have listened to several Sabaton songs and am a fan now. Have to say that this is the best one by them I have heard. you were right about Randy Rhoads, did sound like he was an influence. If I am not mistaken, the sniper used a regular type rifle rather than one of the fancier types. As an American, we seldom get to hear about heroes from other countries which makes it more impressive when you are a Finn, outnumbered with minimal air and armor support. What is it with Finland to be able to produce such heroic soldiers in war time and talented musicians (Nightwish) in peace time? Must be the lake water. Great reaction guys.

There is Lauri Törni or Larry Thorne. Larry is the only known SS officer to be buried in Arlington.

11:27 - I hate that CZcams started doing that. It obscures the ends of videos and if there's ever anything you want to see at the end it covers up way too much of the screen because of that stupid shit. There's no setting to turn it off either as far I know.

When he was asked about his time in the war he said "Tein sen mitä käskettiin ja niin hyvin kuin osasin” (trans. I did what I was told, and as well as I could).. But he didn't like talking about war, like almost all veterans.. Since you know, war is not a nice time..
Comment about his last fight was: ”rehellinen tappelu, jossa paukuteltiin niin paljon kuin ehdittiin” (Trans. Fair fight, where we shot as much as we could [we being both enemy and friendlies])
