- Brazil is potentially growing into a global superpower. Over the past two decades, Brazil’s economy has grown rapidly. Despite a recent slump, it is projected to boom in the coming decades, becoming the fourth largest economy in the world by 2050. Meanwhile, Brazil’s population will slowly grow, before peaking in 2043. In addition, Brazil’s political influence and military will expand. Brazil is already the regional power of South America, with the 9th strongest military in the world. However, it is now spreading its political influence across the world and growing its military. Moreover, Brazil’s cultural and economic influences are growing through tourism and its MNC’s. By 2050, Brazil is projected to be a global superpower, with a robust economy, a powerful military and expansive cultural/political influence.

Gdp per capita is just a statistic. The money needs to reach the people...how? In the same way they reach the people on develop countries. They have critical technical employees to make relevant technology...to the world.
Brazil have just big agribusiness with low people demand. This make our exchange currency problem. We can improve that with good and safe tourism...but we have a problem here too.
What is critical to developing a country...we need to invest. No problem if is needed a public company for that. Renault, Pegeout and Citroën is a french public company. Just make it right with no corruption.

A China pela maior parte da história se quer existiu, ela passou por diversas guerras civis e emancipações.
O maior inimigo da China, em grande parte da história, foram seus próprios conflitos internos (é difícil convencer milhões de pessoas a milênios atrás que eles tem que se juntar num país só, mesmo falando línguas diferentes - até hoje é muito comum a existência de dialetos locais).
O Brasil não teve nada disso, mas tem uma história muito mais curta (200 anos, porque antes era uma colônia e não tinha poder sobre si mesmo), com desvantagem tenologica, científica e com uma oligarquia já estabilizada.

Brazil needs to start focusing on its own inner market as well. Being to dependent of other countries, especially with commodity exports, could be a detrament. They need to invest and innovate. Create new industries inside Brazil. As well as focus on the education and poverty issue.
The state it's the biggest obstacle, I'm not talking about just of the govenment but the whole governmental structure including the constitution.
It's necessary to make a lot of reforms to become a superpower reducing drastically the state power.

Probably you friend is from a slum, or, how we call it here "favela". Brazilian slums are everywhere in the big cities, it resembles a bit poor neighbourhoods. But in no way they are prevalent in the cities. Actually, most of brazilian cities don't have slums. Brazil it's a huge country from north to south. There are places you'd think you were in Africa (city of Salvador, São Luís or Rio de Janeiro), and others as you were in Europe (Gramado, Pomerode, Blumenau, etc), or even at Asia (São Paulo and Curitiba cities received thousands of japanese, chinese and korean people at 1900 onwards).
I'd suggest you to research about Brazil. We have our issues, but it's still one of the best places to live on earth.

Right now, US would really bennefit from a super power like Brazil, we have no qualms with US, and we being comercial partners since forever, also, different from China, we are a democracy, and our people aren't all that different, we like futebol (soccer), you like football, we both like parties and a really good barbecue! And our histories aren't all that different.
