- Hi everyone! Today I'm going to be talking about a book I recently finished called Woven in the Moonlight and throughout the story the descriptions of food were making me SO HUNGRY. I was inspired to look up a few recipes and tried to make one of the Bolivian cakes! I asked you all on Instagram and learned so much about this recipe and how everyone seems to have a slightly different take on it from Spain to Mexico to Brazil! I hope you enjoy :)
Mentioned:
Please watch this video talking about the colonialism themes in this book that I honestly did not understand at all - • a wrap-up of unhinged ...

*I used pear juice instead of congac and lime/water instead of vodka :)

Very important discourse going on right now about the sequel to this book as well as elements in this one that I admittedly didn't give enough thought to. I was hoping the sequel would continue with the main character and her journey of learning more about the indigenous culture that her people oppressed, but in the sequel the POV actually switches to a new main character who, if you read the first one, is even worse than our first main girl when it comes to recognizing her role in colonization. Please check it out here: instagram.com/p/CJog7nqAWs1/
And please watch this video: czcams.com/video/r4BgWYkVhfY/video.html
This is one of my favorite things you've ever done. This should be a series. Books and baking!
🙏 if i can get rice cooker to cooperate more, I’d love to hahah
I realized after uploading that I edited out an important segway during my egg cracking tangent lol. The reason I brought up Popocatépetl was to show that thats the only Spanish-language legend/fantasy i know, so I was really excited for this fantasy story inspired by Bolivian culture. Even though Latin American and South American writers are the kings/queens of magical realism, its still rare to see them in fantasy (at least, fantasy that gets translated to English!) Thank you Isabel Ibañez for bringing us into your world!!
I recommend you Laura Gallego, shes a spaniard and a really good fantasy writer ❤️
Hi, dunno if you'll see this comm3nt cuz this video is old, but Liliana Bodoc writes adult fantasy, related to the native cultures of south america, Saga of the Borderlands(at least this is the one I know has been translated) is a retelling of european colonization from native people's POV with magic and war and a bit of love... a bit Game of thron-y if you like that stuff
Books and cakes are my favourite things so i'm not complaining
🙈 thank you!!!
I really appreciate when english-speakers take the time to pronounce spanish words. I kind of want to say thank you, don't ask me why but thank youuu
🙏🙏🙏
🙏🙏🙏
ok but now all i want is a whole cake, a cup of tea, and a great book :') you're killing it with this channel, cari! 💛
😂 the dream!! And thank you!
I'm from Bolivia and I'm happy to hear you want to taste our Salteñas, is indeed one our best foods. Love your videos. Also , kind of fun fact, given the time difference we can say you posted this video August 6, which is Bolivia's Independence Day, so that's what I call really good timing.
as a chilean i loved listening how u used a bunch of really typical things we can find here like 'polvos royal' (baking powder), cognac and dulce de leche lol love youuuu hehe
It took me so long to figure out what Royal was 😂😂😂 thanks for watching!!
sis im chilean too. im also soo happy
Another chilena here 👋🏻 🇨🇱 I really enjoy a lot this video 🤗
omg Chilean gangg
@@cookiejar.mp3 siii, siempre hay un chileno😉
Cariii please make this a series!! Books and Bakes, this was the best book review ever hahaha the way that you were explaining the plot and chopping the walnuts.. that was great!!
Please keep this concept!! 💙💙
Hehe thank you!!!
It's amazing how you somehow always know the perfect wholesome content to upload to make my day better! This is SUCH a cute idea! Keep up the good work
🙈🙏 thank you!
I'm early, I never comment on anything in here because English is not my strongest hability but your videos are an absolute treasure, I remember how happy I was with your mcr reunion video, thank you cari, from the bottom of my heart. From a Venezuelan expat, and huge mcr fan, trying to navigate this crazy world.
Thank YOU so much!!! Hopefully in 2021 we’ll have more mcr content 😉
Please, please don't try to whip egg whites to stiff peaks by hand ever again. I care about you and I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Its more "easier" if you do this in a bigger bowl and whisk with a fouet (also, is good for burn fat haha - that was what my father said to me before I gave the fouet to him)
in the worst case you can do it with a fork... at least its easier than with that spoon 😔
hey cari i am from argentina and the dulce de leche can also be done by boiling milk with sugar and keep mixing so it doesnt stick until you have a more syrup consisten. i really loved your video, keep going this way!
Man “doce de leite” is the BEST thing. We have a very rich tradition here in Brasil and a lot of our baked goods have it. I’m so glad you brought that book here because it’s really difficult to see South American culture in books.
You cooking/baking in your booktube channel is the kind of crossover everyone needs in their lives. 💖🌸 Love you in your *Can Read* and *Cakes* form, *Cari* !
💕🙏
Oh Cari, as a Latin American woman I'd like to say that this cake you made looks better than any recipe I have made in my life, so congrats on that! ✨ Also isn't that cover beautiful? I've had that book on my TBR for such a long time, I should probably get to it rather soon. BTW can I take the liberty to give you a few recommendations? I think you would love The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, it has almost like a Studio Ghibli vibe! Then there's A Winter's Promise by Christelle Dabos which is also beautiful 💕
Omg thank you 🙈 and yessss i will add these to my list 👀
Oh yes, so many good recommendations right there! C. Dabos is one of my fav authors so thank you for talking about her!
@@doriane6441 Yes! La Passe-Miroir is probably my favorite series ever, I've never found anything similar, it's just magic ✨
@@martabarrales3112 same, she has a way with words to create a whole character or even universe in one sentence! It's very fun and good.
CARI, DO A VIRTUAL BOOK CLUB!!!! I need that in my life.
Your accent is so great! Thank you so much for actually trying to pronounce all those words as they should and for being so respectful of the latin culture! I actually live in Puebla city and I see the Popocatepelt and the iztaccihuatl every day! If you ever want to visit in the future I'll be happy to be your guide ✌🏼 and if you like Maria's and also lemon you can try making a Calota de limon, it's originally french but very popular in Mexico and probably in other parts of America
Ohhh have to add that recipe to my list!! And say hi to popo for me 🥰 I’d love to visit one day!!!
@@caricanread the popo and izta both say hi back at ya!
Your videos make me feel happy. You're the reason I'm getting back into reading!
As a subscriber to your main channel, I just know I'm gonna love your reading vlogs. This was such a fun video.
🥰🥰🥰
Wait omg I LOVE this idea.
🙏🍰 cant go wrong with cake and books!
I’m here a day late but still excited! Baking a cake while talking about books? Top tier content ✨
Cari! I loved this! More books & baking content!
I love this concept so much! And your whole commentary while baking is very relatable.
I picked up this book after watching your video and am LOVING it so far, I can't put it down! The ACTION, the DRAMA..Thanks so much for the recommendation! (And your cake still looks suuuuper tasty😋)
I’m from Russia, and dulce de leche is also super popular around here. We call it just a boiled condensed milk though)) It is easier to buy pre-made one, because it is available in every store. Maria biscuits are also very common in Russia, and you can find it literally everywhere too. Thanks for the book recommendation and for the recipe!
I love this!! And thank you!
I loved this video! Would be awesome to see more along the same concept...your favorite dishes from books, going to restaurants that have these dishes or making them, doing more activities inspired by the stories you’ve read, etc.
Little tip for eggwhites/meringue: before whipping ad a little bit of salt, it will help the eggs to fluff up. When the eggwhites are frotty and no longer see trough, you should ad some sugar and continue whipping. The sugar makes the mixture stiffen up way easier, the same way it does it for those dalgona coffees! 😊🌼
pls make this a series!💓💓
Inspiring. Life-changing. Amazing. I want this cake now - and also the book - and I can't even decide which one I want most...
I have a book suggestions if you want to keep learning about Latin America culture, The Air You Breathe by Frances de Pontes Peebles. It’s about 2 girls who run away from their small town to go Rio de Janeiro to pursue their dream of singing. It’s one of my favorite books ever and touched on a lot of issues such as classism and racism that still present in the Brazilian culture (and in a lot of Lat Am countries as well) and you also learn about samba! P.S. loved this video and I’m definitely checking out this book
My grandma was from Bolivia and they fled Chile back to Bolivia during Pinochet’s dictatorship in ‘73-90. She was a badass, the food in this video reminds me of her :)))
Now I really have to read this book!!
🙏🙏🙏
ohhh I love the cooking from books idea! Please keep doing these :)
Hheheh i will certainly try!!
I just discovered that you made this booktube channel, and it is honestly just what I didn't know that I needed! Excited for what is to come on here. Love from Denmark ♥
🥰🥰🥰 thank you so much!!!
Loved this video concept!! Super impressed with your Spanish pronunciation! Dying to read this book!
Thank you! It was really a fun read :)
Ah I loved this! Looks so delicious. MORE BOOKISH BAKING PLEASE
i love your aesthetic and energy so muchhh!! its so soothing and satisfying 😌
books AND baking inspired by books? GENIUS!! please make this a series ;)
the cake looks so delicious too ouff
In India, those Maria cookies are called marie biscuits and its a staple with tea.
OMG you pronounced spanish amazing🧡 this video made my day happier, thank you for all the good content you share to us☺️
Books and baking is now my new favorite thing, please make this a series! 😍
I will try 🙈
I really liked the idea of this video. Definitively original and fun !
I was smiling so much while watching this. Thank you!
I once tried whipping egg whites during my semester abroad in Japan to make an Austrian dish that I was craving. Didn't make it half as far as you! And ended up making scrambled eggs instead. :'D
Loved the chill video. I could listen to you talk about books all day
Do try it again and split the quantity in half so you make the top and bottom layer separately ☺️ then you can using the filing in the middle too! Such a lovely video I wish CZcams had smell vision lol I LOVE walnut cake 😂
I will definitely try it again 😍😍😍
this was so fun! And this book sounds so great!!! ooo decoys 👀I am intrigued
I think you would like Of Fire and Stars. It’s a YA fantasy about two princesses who fall in love. There’s a lot of magic, court dynamics, and politics.
I want to point out how stylish our chef is, with the cute hair and stylish apron!
Girl, you so stylish!
Couldn't wait to watch this week's video. Thank you for uploading it even though you were travelling ❤
Thank you!!! Sending love from Busan this time instead of Seoul haha
I had a weird morning and this is just what I needed! Love you and your videos so much! 💛
Hope the rest of your day is lovely ✨
I just kept smiling for the ENTIRE video. It felt good
Looks so delicious - super keen to try this recipe now!
Omg this is so funny, I actually didn't know they were sold outside of Portugal 😍 those cookies are so nostalgic for me
Omg now I want to bake this soooo bad! I will try to look for the ingredients here in Italy... I wanna start to take Spanish too from September. Thanks for another amazing video Cari, books and cakes are a combo made in heaven 💞
OMG I wish I knew sooner you knew Spanish. I'm Ecuadorian, I remember how my grandma used Maria cookies, Royal & especially cognac in cakes a lot. But your version is great too. Thank you for another great video!!!
Thank you 🙈🙈🙈
I'm gonna make it! I've been dying to read this book actually, it's been on my list, now I'm even more excited
Yessss dont read it on an empty stomach hehe
Greetings from Bolivia Cari! Love your videos
Greetings from Korea!! Please excuse my ugly torta de nuez 🙈🙈🙈
cari can read you did great! ❤️
i have this weird relationship with reading, if i find a book that i love i finish it so fast but if i don't like it i just ignore reading and books at all costs and i can't get myself to pick up another one to read. I haven't read in months. But the way you talk about books is slowly building back my motivation to stop procrastinating and read again. Btw that cake look amazing 🎂✨
I was like that too, there was a year or so where i would read every day, finish every book, and enjoy it all. Then a few years went by where i probably only read a handful of books, and set down a handful more. Now i am getting back into a reading kick after maaany years. I think there are a lot of unforeseen circumstances in our lives that make us able to love books more, or simply not be able to get into them. Maybe you just got to read the right combination of lovely books to get you out of your slump, that's how i eventually got out of mine. And just setting aside the time and energy just for books helps too.
I remember my first time finding Marie kjeks outside of Norway. My tiny mind went 🤯. They’re originally British and were made as a commemoration of prince Alfred (son of queen Victoria) getting married to Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia (later Duchess of Edinburgh and Duchess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha).
Yay, I was the one that left the comment from Brazil haha, so glad you read it! The coconut milk actually goes in the filling, with lots of egg yolks and sugar. We use the meringue as frosting :)
I love your version of a Topsy Turvy cake.. I love it.
omg I come from Bolivia and did not know that book existed. Thank you very much!!! I will definitely get it!
🥰
This was so much fun to watch! I feel like I got to see a new side of you in this video even after watching your videos for years! Thank you for inspiring me to both read this book and bake a cake ♥️
Cari thank you for sharing you creativity , you are so well-versed on creating these videos thank you thank you. It reminds me so much like water for chocolate which is a book from Mexican author Laura Esquivel, she tells a story through mexican dishes, if you haven't read it I think you would love it. My regards.
Thank you!! And yes! I remember starting that book a long time ago but im not sure I actually finished it! Will have to go back and read :)
I’m really enjoying this channel . I read A Court of Thorns and Roses and Six of Crows . In less than 5 days! Thanks for the recommendation . Also I had some painful flashbacks watching you whisk the eggs .
I really enjoyed this video sm that I really have to read that one and bake this cake for sure, also thanks cari I'm starving hahaha ♥
I love how you moved your kitchen to the other side of the apartment for this 😂😂 This actually looks good you know rosa elena isn’t playing around when the recipe calls for 10 eggs hahah 😂 Everyone’s been talking about this book might have to tbr 🙏
Yeah the light in my kitchen is no good 😂 and omg right?! TEN EGGS?!
i love how disastrously chaotic this is, but so cute!! I feel your pain about the small kitchens in Korea, I admire you for trusting a rice cooker with your cake. Lol (from someone that watches cake rise in the oven) - next time let the cake cool completely before you cut! It'll continue to cook a little bit and help a lot. xxxx
i love the different camera angles!! the final product looks so good 😩💕
You would love any of Carlos Ruiz Zafon books, either of the series that he has, the more young adult series (the mist trilogy +marina ) or the novels (the cemetery of forgotten books series) 😁
Ohhhh looking him up ASAP! Cemetery of forgotten books sounds dreamy!
Waow, you have a great cooking skills. Your passion for baking makes it more memorable. So beautiful. I love your exploration.
Baking is my hubby, I love baking too. I'm always willing to learn new things. Thanks for sharing and stay connect friend 👍❤️
Thanks so much !!!
I 👏 LOVED 👏 THIS 👏
Thank you!
This book sounds great.
It was a really fun read :)
Both excited to try this cake recipe and to read this book!!
🥰🙏
This was such a fun video! Now I want to go and bake a cake too 😅🧡
Maria cookies are so popular in Brazil we can find them in literally any super market, but i was surprised that we can find them in other countries.
Pues como seguidora tuya habitual me ha hecho mucha ilusión escucharte hablar en español, el pastel tiene muy buena pinta! y el libro ya lo he apuntado para leerlo ;)
This was so much fun to watch. Thanks Cari.👍❤️
Thank you ✨🥰🙏
omggg the lemon’s from chile🥺 i’m from chile, idk why i got so excited💛
I was routing for you so much because I hate when something I bake doesn't turn out edible I can't stand to waste all the ingredients I've put into it, but your cake looked good 😋
😂😂😂
as a venezuelan fan of your videos I was sooooo happy to see you use la lechera's dulce de leche lmaooo it's so good (edit: AND the maria cookies!!!!! the venezuelan ones are the best!!!), I'm highkey interested in making a torta de nuez myself... and thank you for reminding me that woven in the moonlight exists! I've had it on my tbr for ages now, so after reading The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern I'll go right a head and pick it up! thank you, cari
Cool video! I love trying new things :) Little tip: you can whip the egg whites with a fork, it's easier and faster :) A whisk is naturally better but if you don't have one, a fork is definitely enough :)
to check if a cake is baked. You need to stick a knife in the middle from top to bottom and pull it out gently. If the knife is "clean" then the cake is baked.
Yes i know this hahah but it was very clear this wasnt baked fully but theres nothing i can really do since it got too big for the rice cooker 🤧
Cari, I loved this vlog! It would be great to see you do more of these vlogs where you are inspired by the books you are reading.
I love love love that you created this channel! its exactly what I needed.
2 Questions:
1) Where do you buy your books from? 2) What ipad do you have? :) love you thankss!!! xoxoxoxo
cari you're the funniest and cutest person on youtube. your content brings me joy every time. also, as a brazilian, I would love to see you reading some of our classics (if you're interested of course) ♡
What a cute idea!
Watching this late but found it so interesting that in Australia we have 'Marie biscuits' which look the same as the 'Maria cookies' 😆
Two of my favorite things! Baking and books. I have this on my to read list after I finish the newest Truely Devious book I am going to dive into this. If you liked this you may like the winternight trilogy. I was surprised how much I liked it
Ohhh I’ll look it up thank you!!
i would love to see you try making some vegan recipes next! :)
Oh my god these 19 minutes went by so fast! Absolutely LOVE this video!!❤️
Thank you!
Books and cakes. What a nice combination 🥰
The best!
It looks so good! I'm going to try this srsly! Maybe a new cake to add to my short list of cake I can bake 😂 the book seems nice too
Amé escucharte hablar en español🤭😍 hahahah i loooove this idea and love that you show so much interest in the book and in south american culture 💘 lots of love from Chile 🇨🇱💫🖤
🥰🥰🥰
Omg you’re from SD! I’m from TJ 💞 I miss sooo much SD (since the border is cross😩).
Love your videos
Watching your video before going to sleep is soo relaxing :) love you cari
Ahh loved this! Can you do a whole book-inspired baking/cooking series? This is getting me to want to bake something now, haha. And your cake looked really cute and yummy :)
Have you read Zoraida Cordova's Brooklyn Brujas series? If you're interested in more Latin American fantasy, it sounds like something that might be up your alley. The author is Ecuadorian-American (as well as a old college friend of mine!), and deals with a lot of lore surrounding brujeria/witchery, if I'm not mistaken. I have yet to read it myself (I know, am horrible friend lol), but if you ever get around to covering it for the channel, let us know and I might just read along with you :)
Also: Maria cookies are THE BOMB haha
Omg i havent but its going to my must-read list!! Thank you!
cari can read glad to hear it!
omg i want to try to bake this cake, it looks amazing! I also might read the book because it sounds interesting and the south american representation is so important! If you are interested in reading south american authors I recommend you Horacio Quiroga, he was an Uruguayan writer who wrote a lot of short stories in which he got inspired on his own life experiences. Saludos de Uruguay 🇺🇾
Hi Cari! I don’t know if you already read this book but it’s great! One hundred years of solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I’m chilean and here we have to read it in school, when I got to the end I remeber being mindblown. I read it like eight years ago though. But totaly recomend it!
I loved this! Really amazing video, you should do it a series. And great to see you're using Chilean lemons, very appropiate. A big hug from Santiago, Chile!
