  • You loved my previous Herringbone Accent Wall video, but a few people had some questions and wanted to see a few more details.
So here it is! The New and Improved version 2.0 of my step by step how to build a Herringbone Accent wall.
I'll briefly write the steps below incase you missed anything from the video.
HOW TO BUILD A HERRINGBONE ACCENT WALL:
1.Determine how much material is needed by measuring your wall, width X height, then divide that number by 32. This number tells you how many 4x8 sheets are needed. Then add 10%
2.Determine the size of your boards to be cut. Hallway=4"x16" Small wall 5'-8'= 5.5"x24" Walls larger wider than 8'= 5.5"x48"
3.Using 1/2" MDF sheets, cut your sheets down to either 4" or 5-1/2" strips using your preferred method.
4.Cut the strips down to the final length of 16" or 24" or 48" (MDF sheets come in 49" width)
5.Mark exact center on your wall, mark center on your board (see video for details)
6.Install first two boards at perfect 45 degree angle (see video for details)
7.Start assembling the accent wall (see video for tips)
8.Fill nail holes, and lightly caulk seams.
    9. Paint wall with primer.
    10. Paint wall with desired color.
Congratulations! You have a Herringbone Accent wall everyone will love!
    TOOLS REQUIRED:
    Tape measure
    Framing square
    24" level (high quality)
    Laser level, if available
    Ladder
Table saw, Track saw, Circular saw with guide. (only one is needed, not all three, unless you really like saws)
    Jig saw
    Sliding miter saw
18 gauge brad nailer. Air powered or battery
1-3/4 brad nails. 2000 quantity for average wall
HVLP Paint sprayer (these can be rented)
If spraying is not an option, then a couple quality rollers and brushes will work.

Love this, im doing a herring bone pattern celing in my walk in closet (good place to practice)...with pallet wood. Do you leave any spacing between the boards for expansion?

For these walls I use MDF and it doesnt expand much at all, but I do leave some space around the edges where it meets the walls. For you using pallet wood (I've wanted to try this) you may want to leave small spacing in between, pallet wood is usually pretty dry and shouldnt expand much.
