My wife asked me to do this to our bedroom wall just the other day. Thanks so much for the tips!
Just finished my accent wall project. The math for the spacing was the key to the overwhelming success, thanks for all the great tips. Wish I could send a picture, it looks awesome.
Glad it helped!
Simple formula for figuring out spacings, is adding one more to your dividing when doing the math. So let’s say you have something at 30 inch wide, and you want 4 sections, you’d divide that 30” by 5, which gives you your 6” CENTERS for 4 pieces. It works like a charm, then all ya gotta do is center up your board or item by knowing that center…. So say you have a 12’ wall, and want five vertical boards up, you’d take 144” divide that by 6, and it’ll give you 24” centers. And say you’re using 1x4 stock, you move a tic mark to 1 3/4” to the right of Center, and a tic mark at 1 3/4” to the left of Center. That will give you your boards placement on the wall. Then plumb up a line from the outter tic marks and go to town with install. Hope this can come in handy for somebody
Thank you for a practical, easy application video that includes how to do measurements, etc. I’m still considering whether or not to do this project but this video has really been helpful.
Clever math! I'm an architect and I usually just measure on center. I like how you did that though!
Love it you did a great job explaining all the steps . Looks amazing 👏
This wall looks amazing! I appreciate the thorough explanations. I got a new house and want to do an accent wall, and your explanations are going to help me a ton! :)
The trim that you removed close to the ceiling I believe is called picture-rail molding. Instead of putting nails in you wall you would suspend your pictures from the rail molding. Although the area between the ceiling and the picture-rail molding is usually painted the same as the rest of the wall. Thanks for the project idea Brad.
Picture rail your correct but normally painted white the same as the ceiling then a dado at waist hight
Nice job explaining! Kept it simple, yet technical enough to fill in the blanks. Thank you!
Looks great and the best walkthrough I've seen so far.
I'm working on a wall the same size. What measurement did your spacings equal out to with 5 sections?
Also can you share the paint color?
Your channel is an underrated gem, you'll be at 5 million in no time!
Informative, funny, great worksmanship… what more do I need? Good job!
Wow! I was literally searching CZcams videos for this like 2 days ago and was shocked when one of my subscribed channels didn't have it. Thanks so much for uploading this!
You bet!
Caulk and paint make you the joiner you ain't. Brilliant and sums me up nicely
It’s gorgeous!
Love this breakdown. Having this done in my living room.
My wife just announced that my next project will be a board and batten wall, so your timing is perfect!
As always a wonderful video. Got me looking at my walls now lol.
Very nice. In uk we call it dado rail and it is used to separate wallpaper and paint.
I really love this and would like to try it on one of my walls but my home is 125 years old and I have most (assuming) of the original large oak baseboard. Is there a way I can do this while keeping the original baseboard as it is quite large compared to newer homes? Thank you
Mwuah ha ha, love the Fiero + body kit reference.. classic!😂
i definitely prefer the 5 openings. good choice and very tastefully done
Just what I needed to watch! This is my next project.
So many practical tips! Thanks!❤️👍🏻🇬🇧
I watch a ton of DIY youtube videos and I like this guy.
Nicely done Brad!! So fun fact, it was actually your wainscot video from forever ago that got me watching your Channel Bud!! Hoping all is well guys, Dirty Jersey out!!
Nice project Brad, a Graco airless paint sprayer would have been an awesome tool to have on this project. Any excuse I can get to buy a tool is a good excuse!
The most complete and informative video about this topic. I congratulate you, you have helped me determine what I will do in the next days concerning this project.
My compliments, I recently discovered you and you have become my idol. I hope that goole translator does his duty, a warm greeting from Marco and all of Italy too bad I don't understand a word from you but you show me how you do it and it's perfect, a hug.
You know someone is good at what they do when they make it look easy....That is definitely a very complex process. You make it look very do-able for me. I am going for it! ... Thank you sir.
New drinking game, every time he says scotch, you have to take a sip! Good luck making it to the end!
Don’t try it with actual scotch tho, lol
@@Fixthisbuildthat Priceless!
Shots of scotch, here I go 😂
love it thank you for the idea
A lot of great tips in here! Great job!👍
Thanks for the video! Looking to do something similar in my master bedroom and after watching this I now know what to do. Cheers!
Thank for you for walking us through the math! Dropped a like. Looks great.
Bravo. Well done! Saved for reference.
Amazing video of the entire process. Thanks for the details and making me laugh along with way!
Something that I would love to have your (and other commenters' ) expert opinion(s) is what could be pros and cons of using strips from MDF sheets instead of the already cut strips. From what I understand, making strips from MDF sheet would be way more econimical to buying mouldings from big box stores.
Would love your comment on this.
Easy now. I have a lot of the faux large trim at ceiling! lol
That wall looks awesome, Brad! Excellent work man!
Thanks, dude!
Looks great! What’s the color and finish (matte, flat, semigloss?)
Wow, Thank you, best video I’ve watched. You look like you have quite the beautiful shop! Thanks for all your tips and guidance. I’m ready to tackle my wall. Going to surprise my husband…Just curious as to the colour of paints you used in the room. They look amazing together.
Accent wall turned out great - I have the same size wall I have been laying pattern out on - question - hard to see in video so you have textures walls? I do and may have to add hardboard to wall and align it with the vertical boards
This is a good DIY project!
Nothing wrong with hotdog rollers. A little mustard and they are perfect!
😂😂
Very nice video, liked & subscribed! Was your wall smooth or textured? If I have textured walls like a lot of houses have these days, can I just install straight on it? Or do I need to sand first or use a thin board to cover the whole wall? Thanks
"Caulk and paint makes you the carpenter you ain't!!" Lol
Great tutorial! Thank you!
Really good detailed instructions. I’m going to use your instructions 😊
You’re so thorough
Right on. Ty
Really excellent, detailed video. Thank you!
It looks awesome
great job!very helpful, so how much do they charge w/o painting for a carpenter to put that up, same size wall, curious? 500$
Removed period effect trim... to fit different period effect trim. Good job.
Great job!!!
Made my life a lot easier with this video haha, appreciate the thoroughness!
I’ve used the 3M small hole filler on the joints as recommended, but I’m a little concerned that it might crack over a couple of summer to winter seasons as the wood expands and contracts (I’m doing an entry hallway so temps fluctuate a bit). Am I worrying about nothing?
I'm totally combing Craigslist for a Fiero now... 😊 The wall looks great, man!
Make sure it’s got that sweet body kit! 😂
My Dad had one growing up, it was pretty awesome back in the 80’s
Be sure to keep it held together with Scotch Painter’s Tape from our friends at 3M!
Great job and great tips, Brad. More of those "me" nails in this one too. Take care.
Bill
Thanks, Bill!
Perfect
great job!
Great Wall.
Awesome project, what color paint did you use I really like it.
A super easy way to figure out spacing is to go to a fabric store and buy a roll of 1 or 2" elastic. Some people use this for spacing when doing deck railing. Make marks at every inch or whatever you want, then stretch the elastic across the length you have. Your lines that you marked on the elastic will give you the center lines for the boards. It's easier than how I awkwardly explain it.
There are a million ways of doing it. That is not a practical one.
@@Faruk651 This comment does not need to be made. If you can't say something nice...........
Did the texturing on the drywall show through at the end and did it affect the final product?
Nice job, Brad! Greetings from Franklin.
DiYer here. Drywall hawk over pan all day long, learned with a pan and then found a hawk. Man that is so much easier.
The crown moulding in my house has that other thinner piece under it to make it look thicker. We have a Colonial style home so it fits in and it looks great. To each their own though.
I agree. In my area the cheapest homes have no crown, the next level up has crown and the high end homes have crown and the bottom trim board and center paint.
Looks great, thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome!
Interesting. Very interesting.Just realized I'm already subscribed.
can you do a video on subtle acoustic paneling that's also effective ?
excellent work, but I want to know what is the color of the paint?🙌🤗 thanks
Such a great video !!
Very helpful information. Thank you man!
You bet!
I’m new to your channel.. great workmanship.. you have a lot nice projects.. the accent wall and floating selves came out really 👍 👏
This video was outstanding
🤩 Thanks so much for making it. I didn’t see the link you mentioned for the 3D software. That would really help me do my first ever project.
Sketchup
Great video bud. I must ask what are the names of those boards you used for the accent wall. And where could I purchase them from?
Amazing!
Looks Fantastic! Great Video and well explained steps. I did my bathroom with panels and it looks great altought you cant be in a rush when doing this. I see you used sketchup for desing but what do you use for the more realistic views after sketchup?
I'd get a nice color matched outlet plate, I think they make paintable ones as well.
Hard to tell from the video but does that wall have texturing or was it that smooth to begin with? Do I need to remove the texturing first?
What color and finish did you use ? Love it
I just finished my wall and I wish it could say it looked as good as yours. I think I had too much caulk residue and the paint job was rushed. Can I email you a pic and have you give me your thoughts on the best was to fix it? I’m guessing some sanding and repaint? Perhaps with a sprayer…
Looks great and very useful tips. Do you happen to know the color of the walls?
1:02 My buddy and I were talking about this last night!
Love it man good job thank you
Glad you like it
Yeah I'm definitely using my paint sprayer
What's the difference in the old upper molding that you removed and what you are currently installing with the faux batten, they both are faux?
Hi. Just wondered what adhesive caulk you used. Is liquid nails overkill? Thanks
Good job. Nice video.
Nice job
Before watching video, reminds me of what Finish Carpentry TV did to his house with the same style. Inspiration is everywhere :)
FCTV is a great channel! He is fairly local to me and I were building a house I'd 100% hire him and pay a bit more if necessary. quality stuff with that guy.
I've never seen that channel, but this is for sure a popular style!
@@Fixthisbuildthat yeah he does trim work and finish carpentry, hence the name. He explains a lot of what he does during the course of his work. Pretty cool guy to watch. He did his wall about 6-8 months ago.
@@Fixthisbuildthat Defiantly worth looking him up. Great tips. Helped a ton when doing molding in my place after the floors. We have rounded corners in the house.
Both great channels!
Great video, very through
That looks really nice, what color of paint is that?
What is the approach on the panel sizes when you have baseboard heaters?
Right I live in the UK, how do you get around solid walls? Raw plugs and screws, countersink and fill or just adhesive and let set? Every single wall is solid and I'm stuck haha
Best video I've seen on this.
Great video .What is that vertical and horizontal wooden trims called as ? Trying to find them on Home Depot . Could you please let me know
Oh. My. Word. Shims to level the front edges. Why have I never seen this on a how-to video before? I have some joints in a few places that I tried to fill and level from the front and when the light hits a certain way…well, they’re gross. I now know how to fix them and avoid the issue next time! So exciting!
What spackling should I use for nail holes in MDF to ensure no swelling? And which caulking for MDF? Thanks in advance!
Wood filler
I like how relaxed your approach is with everything vs being OCD. I say this because I’m super OCD and it’s nice to be reminded that a simple approach is sometimes the best approach. Well done 👍🏻
Thanks!
I’m doing an accent wall above my built in desk and I keep wondering what the seams will look like a year from now where the stiles and rails butt together. With this type of install not being a panel like a cabinet door and just being nailed to the wall then the seams must open up over time right? I’ve been thinking about biscuiting at the seams but doubting that this is what pro finish carpenters do. Anyways wanted to hear your thoughts.
What color did you use ? Love it !
