Roger Leloup's Yoko Tsuno is a great comic for a family man. If one leaves a comic on a table, one can be secure that it won't traumatize any children. There is some sci-fi and mystery for the adult to enjoy as well.

Even now the strips bring me immense comfort. I would also say hayao miyazaki's crimson pig is a short but fun holiday comic to read. Especially when you're flying.

I'm gonna go with Donald Duck. I was never a huge fan of those comics, to be honest, but I did love buying some of those collections to read during holidays in a tent or caravan.
Side-story: as I was trying to think of specific holiday-themed comics I'd read, I remembered reading a spider-man comic in which he (nearly) died and was having an out-of-body experience. Looking down on himself he realizes he always worried too much in life. He actually ends up fighting Thanos in that comic and convincing Death to return him to life. It's one of those comics that really made an impression on me when I was young and I had completely forgotten about it until just a few minutes ago. If I remember correctly that comic ends with him worrying about the fact that he dropped the barbecue sauce he was supposed to give to aunt May - maybe that was holiday related as well, possibly for Thanksgiving dinner or something - in any case, thanks for (inadvertently) reminding me of that one! According to Reddit it was Spider-Man #17 btw (not sure which iteration of the comics) and I'm going to try and find it in my old collection of comics tomorrow!

Easy, you already choose Jordi Lafebre one of your fav reads this year. Maybe you can check ”les beaux étéz/los buenos veranos” by Zidrou and Lafebre. In english it should be ”the good summers”, but no idea if it was translated. Great stories about a family and their holidays

With respect to both definitions of holiday, I'll say mine are:
Celebratory Day Holiday--the JLA/JSA thanksgiving issue, can't recall which vol/issue it is
Day off Holiday--anything that's a silly and easy read, currently I Hate Fairyland
Long term Holiday--Long runs that deserve serious attention while reading like Claremont X-Men or Lee/Kirby F4

    - A comic to reccomend to anyone: Peanuts by Charles Schulz
    - A great adaptation: 1984 by Fido Nesti
    - A great love story: A taste of chlorine by Bastien Vivés
    - My first comic pursued: Dampyr (various artists - italian comic series)
    - Nonfiction comic: Pyongyang by Guy Delisle.
    - Confort comic: Tin Tin by Hergé
    - Gorgeous comic: Castle in the stars by Alex Alice
    - A comic that blew my mind: V for vendetta by Alan Moore and David Lloyd
    - The most beautiful scene: A sea of love by Wilfrid Lupano
    - An old comic I've loved: The Eternaut by Oesterheld
    - A great holiday comic: Your Wish Is My Command by Deena Mohamed
When I'm on holidays I usually like to read something enjoyable and that makes me travel somewhere far or imaginative. This graphic novel is an imaginative story set on a modern Cairo where magic exists. Three bootles that contain powerful wishes will chance the life of the protagonists. It's a nice tale of urban life, motivations and desires.

For this one, I'm going with the most literal interpretation and picking Grant Morrison and Dan Mora's Klaus. It's up there as one of the most beautiful books I've ever read, with a particular nod to Mora's stunning colours, invoking a truly festive feeling. On my first read I was a little disappointed in how simplistic and by-the-book the plot and characters seemed, especially given Morrison's reputation, but upon annual re-reads I find it actually adds to the mythical/folk-tale feeling of the story.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Před 6 měsíci +1

I should re-read Klaus. I thought it was absolutely gorgeous and stunning to look at, but wasn't gripped by the story as a whole. I like the more mythic and iconic interpretation you're taking, though; that definitely works in so many of my favourites.

This day, i'll choose 'A Christmas for Shacktown' by Carl Barks. It's obviously not gonna be a long graphic novel, but it's the best one i'd still choose!

The only thing I can think of that fit your parameters and my tastes would be Maus by Art Speigelman

I actually read Maus over one summer off from college! It didn't last the whole summer, but it is dense and rich enough to take up a chunk.

@@ftloc yes it’s definitely that density that made me think of it immediately. The heavy subject matter wouldn’t deter me from picking it for my vacation as I love indulging in sadness and the feeling of a sinking heart. Sounds weird typed out lol

@@gianmarcotoval509 there's definitely catharsis, and I guess there's something to be said for reading the saddest things when you can come back to a holiday reality, kind of a tempering balance?
But I agree, the density and the space to be able to tackle it is the most valuable thing...

To be very honest with you, this time the prompt felt a little bit all over the place. Throwing criteria based on the content of the works themselves together with reader experience based ones ans even completely external factos like different calendarizations and work/school planning felt a bit ... as Bilbo Baggins would put it... like butter that has been stretched over too much bread. But please don't take this as a mean-spirited critique. I actually took it more as a challenge to see if I could come up with something to harmonize the ideas that you conjured in my mind.
Saying I'm not a particularly religious man would be underselling it, so I don't tend to be much into the celebration of the faith-based parts of certain holidays. Than, however, has always made me focus on making those instances more about the people with which I share that time together... That, and my very probable focus on the needs of others due to upbringing and adhd type2, make me almost always end up not reading much at all during celbrations and such. I also can't really come up with a comic that is thematically somehow intrinsecally linked to some holiday. I know there are many stories set around christmas or halloween and such, but none really come to my memory as importat or memorable BECAUSE of it.
Now, going into your other definition, the very broad and weird one, I think I can get more inspired... but I wouldn't go the route of "comics that I read during that free-for-all times that are the holidays" (as in vacations). I think I'd like to twist the take and see if I can summon to my mind a comic that "feels" like vacations; one that becomes a period of holidays in your mind, heart, and memory; one that whisks you away and where you actually ended up spending those days in; one that even replaces your reality for a while. I think many of us have some sort of reading, comic or prose, that inhabited SO HARD that we feel we know that "place" better than the one we actually were in while reading; readings that we remember better than anything else that was going on around us at the time. In a certain sense those comics WERE that holiday, a vacation from our world.... I think it's not a half-bad spinn-off from your original concept, right?
And in that sense, I think I need to go with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. I was living in Sweden at the time I finally got my hands on the complete edition (the pretty one in 2 volumes in a box), the days were getting shorter, and I was sort of in a "floating" place mentally speaking. That first time I read it I probably went through it in two sittings. I was completely and absolutely immersed in that world. I was still getting familiar with Stockholm, so Nausicaä's world felt pretty much as new to me as my real enviromnent, its characters as strange and fascinating as any person I was getting in touch at the time. I hadn't been sucked in into a fictional world in this way probably since reading the Lord of the Rings in my teens. And it felt good, not safe, for that world was dangeous, but good... exhilarating, stimmulating... it had a brutal hook on me, and it somehow felt like going back into the summer holiday adventures of my childhood, when everything was new, you moved carefree through the town, riding your bikes with your pals in places you were not supposed to go, sneeaking into places, sharing stories and getting to know friends you maybe wouldn't even get to see ever again. Of course, I was very far from my teens and going so hard into my reading, taying awake for hours and hours, ended up throwing me really badly out of ballance and I ended up with some awfull stomach cramps, dizziness, etc. having to go to see a doctor (I'm lucky my Wife is a saint and somehow got me there while I was basically in a half-ghost state). I guess my advice is, even if a comic sucks you in and feels as good a the summer vacations you had as a kid, don't forget to sleep a bit. The comic will still be there on your night table next morning.
Sorry for that weird tangential story by the way.
Oh... I also got an idea for a future promt (in case you are ever in need of one). An interesting one would be "a comic that you would like to erase from your memory, so that you could experience it for the first time again".

      tangential but funny! 😂😂😂
comics have long been seen as a strange thing for weirdos (let alone the mangas). I guess strangeness and weirdness are for most of us kind of our treatment!!!

    • @ftloc

I have a very different relationship with religious festivals and holidays than I do with religion 😁, which - as hypocritical as it may sound - is simply a function of stories, whether they are stories I encounter or stories I end up creating.
And yes, this is a lot of bread for this specific butter, but it is also honestly a phrasing that can be interpreted in so many ways that I did want to recognize as many aspects of it as I could think of. Of course, that doesn't mean every one of those parameters has to be hit, more like identifying which interpretation we want to play with.
And that's why yours is so wonderful! I had a similar thought about Calvin and Hobbes - evoking the sensation of childhood, summer, holidays, even if they are not literally similar to our experiences.
Thank you for that story about Nausicaa. It is a particular experience that you've captured wonderfully and I am grateful you shared it.
