I’ll say that some of the comics that make me smile are some silver age comics- Jack Kirby’s Challengers Of The Unknown and Superman especially the ones drawn by Al Plastino. Sure it’s nostalgia , but they bring me back to a more innocent time in comics and I love the naïveté and also the sheer imagination in the writing and art- the do put a smile on my face.

I had big problems to express my emotions in public and always had the same boring expression on my face (except when I talked to people).
Now I'm actively trying to smile more, because I don't want to look aggressive or boring just because thats my "normal resting face".
For this I also often sit in a park and read comics/books and laugh when there is something to laugh - something I never done before in public.
It's one of the best decisions in my life!
Be yourself. Laugh when you want. Show emotions and don't always act like a robot.
And smile... it changed sooo much.
Without smiling no-one really gives a damn about you, because they think you are aggressive or you're having a bad day.

Cocco Bill by Italian creator Benito Jacovitti. Any album will do. It’s a parody of wild west. Jacovitti was visually inventive but combined with endless absurd ideas and laconic humor every page had a smile triggering things in them. As for a comic that has made me smile? I guess this isn't really a wholesome answer, but man do I love Envy Adams from Scott Pilgrim. She easily my favorite antagonist in the story. Her buildup is incredible, and her relationship with Scott is obviously the main focus, but there's another aspect of her character that just makes me smile at just how wicked she really is, and it's the way that even though she seems worlds apart from the rest of the cast, she still so clearly comes from the same friend group as Scott. I absolutely love it when authors repeat specific lines or dialogue through different characters and contexts, and there are so many moments where Envy does this, repeating exact quotes and inside jokes that we've heard Stephen Stills or Kim Pines say while cooking dinner or hanging out. It twists the language that Scott is familiar with and weaponizes it against him for some great thematic layering. She's such a total bitch, and I love it.

    • @ftloc

      Haha thank you!
And I absolutely agree that Envy is a terrific 'antagonist', even the way her reputation is built up works so well to typify Scott's various hangups! Very succinct analysis here! 🙂

Okay so I've burnt up my top pick, respecting the not using the same comic twice idea, which is I think a good one. So Calvin and Hobbes is out... then number 2 Asterix is gone for the same reason... I might well have used Bone already... BUT then it struck me by going for the less obvious choice I'd avoid this problem and also found the perfect answer for me. That being Rok of the Reds (including sequel Rok the God) by John Wagner (with Alan Grant) with Dan Cornwell.
Why this one, well its the perfect summation of what made the comics I read as a kid great. A sci-fi, football story. Doomlord (of the relaunched Eagle) meets Roy of the Rovers, via 2000ad and then modernised with a knowing wink to the past, well my past. John Wagner is of course an absolute master craftman. He knows how do so much with so little. Knows his audience, selects his targets with a precision and then hits them with a dark humour like few others. He is also always finding new artist talent and bringing the very, very best from them and in Dan Cornwell he's unearthed's another gem and the perfect successor to the much missed Carlos Ezquerra.
Together its a comic that feels like its been made to please me specifically. Its just a delight and such massive fun. A comic to make anyone smile with cheeky glee.
Now admittedly I'm just back from the UKs best little convention Lawless and have again chatted with both John and Dan who are a joy to meet as ever and so this is just the sort of comic I'm thinking about tonight AND I was made to very much smile when both confirmed the 'secret' that a third series is likely to be annouced in the next few weeks. Glorious news that would make anyone who knows this masterclass tribute to Britsih youth comics smile from ear to ear. So for today I'm defo going for Rok of the Reds.

I have a good excuse for taking so long this time; my first 2-3 picks are ones I've already included for previous days. In their absence, I'll say Spider-Man Blue by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. I only first read it this year following the release of the gallery edition, but it's a book that makes me unreasonably happy. The story is simple but feels so right for classic Spider-Man, however the real star of the show is the late, great Tim Sale's art which I think was perhaps his all-time best.

      Sorry for not elaborating!
Ranma 1/2 is a manga by Rumiko Takahashi (Inuyasha, Maison Ikkoku, Mermaid Saga). If I remember correctly, it's originally 38 volumes. The central plot point being the main character switches to female if hit by cold water, and back to male from hot water.
It sounds simple and silly but the ways in which Takahashi weaves situations with the ever-expanding supporting cast is hilarious.
They were released in 2-in-1 editions some years ago, although now several volumes are out of print. Luckily they are also available digitally though.
As for Memoirs of a man in Pajamas, that's way more recent (released last year I think), by Paco Roca (The Lighthouse, Treasure of the Black Swan, Wrinkles). And is a collection of short comics which I believe were originally published in a Spanish newspaper or magazine.
