- Three recent reads happened to be writer-artist debuts, or at least breakthroughs, so in this episode I chat about Flake, by Matthew Dooley; Mr. Invincible, by Pascal Jousselin; and In, by Will McPhail, all of which are worth checking out.

this man is the reason im running out shelf space. He sells me on these books, I go buy them and thoroughly enjoy them. when i need space i lend/give the books to friends. THEN i watch a video like this and i buy 3 more books! It is a lovely cycle.
Lovely indeed and you have very lucky friends; I hope they appreciate you appropriately!
More comics read and more videos? Your decision of being self-employed is pure bliss for me 🤘
Haha thank you and so glad to hear it, makes it all worthwhile! 😁
You're the best person talking about comics on the internet man. Keep it up!
Wow, thanks! While excessive, that's very kind and extremely encouraging - I'll keep making videos as long as you keep watching them!
Your videos convinced me to finally get into Little Nemo and Usagi Yojimbo and has got me started on awries outside of the regular Marvel and DC superhero series.
So lovely to hear that and long may your enjoyment of this channel continue!
This showcase was fantastic, I've had my eye on In for more than a year and you just now confirmed that I need to get on this sooner rather than later.
Mister Invincible also seems more obligatory than optional, what a fun concept!
I hope you're doing well otherwise, and that your new endeavor as a full time CZcamsr is a success!
I'll try to keep in touch, been absolutely buried in things to do and so on, I'm having a hard time keeping up with your new videos :)
Thank you, as always! And never worry my friend, life needs life-ing; the videos will always be here!
And haha on being a full time CZcamsr! It's more like keeping the hobby going when there's a risk of it being snuffed out by serious work...
Long live the king of comics! Another great job brother!
Haha thank you kindly! 😁
Yeeez, thanks for introducing Mister Invincible!!! Instantly ordered online ✨
Yay! You have to let me know what you think of it!
I love channels that introduce me to books I’ve never heard of before
Glad to hear it, and so do I! 😁 Hope you find plenty on this little channel to enjoy!
I also enjoyed “IN”
Flake sounds interesting as well
I will be re-reading In very soon, I get the feeling! If you do try out Flake, I'd love to know what you think of it!
Mr. Invincible looks amazing! Some panels shown here reminded me of the inventiveness of Filemon and that is a big compliment to any comic book. Goes to shopping list.
After your talks on Franquin, Spirou and many others, I am particularly curious to see what you think of it, as it is definitely paying homage to a certain history as well!
Gotta get Mr. Invincible. This is my speed. Thanks for the referral.
Yay! I get the feeling you'll really like it!
Thank you for showing this little pure gem of Mr Invincible. Haven't heard about this comic but ordered myself a copy right after watching your video. Already got IN on my shelf so it was nice to hear about it too.
Yay! I get the feeling you will enjoy it, but I'd love to know what you thought of it!
Mr Invisible is a mindblowing masterpiece
Mindblowing indeed! 😁
“In” was my favorite comic I read last year. I liked it so much that I gave it as a gift to friends and family, none of whom are comic book readers. I’m excited to check out “flake”. Thanks for the ever thoughtful review.
Thank you, I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! And I feel the same way about In - I want to put it in front of people, which is what I guess I'm attempting here, as always 😁
fantastic start to my Sunday!
So glad to hear it!
I need to look these up! Hadn't even heard of them before.
Obviously, I was impressed, but I would love to know what you think of any that you may check out!
Thanks for this as always u are the best channel!
Thank you too! So glad you enjoy it!
Honestly my pulse always quickens when you post a new video if you recommend ANYTHING I add them ALL to my wish list I just know they're going to be stand out extraordinarily fantastic!!!!
I love hearing that and long may it continue! If you do check out any of these, I'd love to know what you thought, as always!
@@ftlochonestly your reviews are always completely all encompassing hitting the bullseye every single time I know I'll never disagree with any of your critiques and again honestly I'd just be wasting letters it's not like I'm going to add anything new you cover floor to ceiling every single time that's why you and your channel are such a treasure !
I have been recommending Flake and In to everybody for the last 2 years, ever since I've read them. May I also suggest that if you come across Luke Healy's 'The Con Artists' - pick it up sans trepidation.
It could well have been you who planted the seed of Flake in my head - which is why it looked familiar in the bookstore! 😁
In was magnificent, of course. I don't think I did it justice here...
@@ftloc I've been really enjoying the British comics I come across, both in bookstores and libraries. I'll make a list of recent one's that I have enjoyed and hopefully if you come across them, it might make picking those up just a little bit faster!
Also, did you try something different with frame rates in this video?
Send me your lists! And I think my SD card may be acting up. At first I thought the jitteriness just Premiere lagging, but then realised the raw footage had it inherently...I'll try recording externally next time and see if that makes a difference.
I read In last month. I enjoyed it a lot. The main theme hit me hard because I struggle to connect with people, so I was immediately hooked. I was a little dissapointed when the story changed its focus near the end, mostly because I wanted the initial theme to be explored further. However, the book got me emotional at several points after that. I found the story as a whole to be very well told and I enjoyed the experience a lot. 100% recommended.
I had a similar sort of fear as you, but the turn ended up being about the same things - getting to know people and connecting. That line he says to his sister really matches what her son said to him right at the start, and made me feel that it was all, after all, the same story. Remarkable.
Very rarely I'll see a work that aims to explore a concept, and then so thoroughly explores it that only halfway through my mind being blown I think to myself "Wow. This guy thought of everything!" and then it keeps going and my mind is being blown all over. Just judging by the pages you showed, Mr. Invincible looks like it does just that for the idea of breaking the fourth wall in comics.
You should definitely check it out!
Pedantically, Id say maybe a two dimensional panel already has four walls, all of which Mr Invincible breaks, but he also breaks the fifth and the sixth! 😁
Long time lurker but thought of commenting more regularly. I was able to get In and Mr. Invincible from our local library.
Thank you so much and please feel free to comment or not exactly as much as you are comfortable with doing; and what great news about the library - if you do check these books out, I'd love to know what you thought of them! Cheers!
I picked up Mr. Invincible and In from my library too! I just finished Mr. Invincible and will be buying it for myself. Now onto In!
Dagnabbit! Its slowly dawned on me I'm going to have to stop watching your videos.
After I watched this one, straight away, before even typing this comment, initially planned to be a thanks for another great video, I added two, TWO more books to my must buy list. Before I can settle down again I hear a ring from the door, pop to to see what it is and collect the delievery of an comic I picked up due to a video I watched as part of my catch up with your older videos... I have a family with two children to support and a mortgage to pay to keep a roof over our heads....ARE YOU TRYING TO DRIVE US FROM OUR HOME????...
... mind I could just build is a new home from all the hardcover collections I've bought since watching your videos and live off extra copies of Bone I don't need, so ya know what reckon I'll take the risk and stick around....
Surely we know there's no such thing as 'extra' copies of Bone, right?
@@ftloc Well judging by the 1 1/2 I spent in my nerd cave this morning sorting out which was the best copy of each single issue of Bone to keep so I could get rid of my dups the answer has been very much 'No you can never have too many' at some point!
Aaargh! I absolutely "hate" you sir.
IN. has stayed quitely in my wishlist for a year or so but after watching your video and all 3 books have been ordered.
(What I really meant to say is thank you 😅)
Haha, that's the kind of hate I am OK with! And of course tastes may vary, but I feel fairly confident that you will find all three books at least worth your time spent reading them, and probably a bit more! Let me know what you think!
yea, your the best
Thank you! 😁
@@ftloc this is lanuk btw
I remember "IN" when this came out, and I bought it a year later. In my opinion, it was somewhat of a philosophical read-not perfect, but the art was breathtaking and top-notch.
Definitely philosophical, but also very relatable and every day. It is exactly the way it manages to bridge the gap between the routine/humdrum and the universal/transcendental that I found incredible.
i love your content!!
Thank you, that's a lovely thing to say (and to hear!) 😁
Exciting bunch of comics. Thanks for another great video. Somehow I'm particularly prejudiced against other's drawing on Chris Ware's art style…feels like identity theft, perhaps!
I feel i may have been unfair here... The colours and panels and yes maybe the circular faces were a little reminiscent but there's as much Ralph Stanley or Seth here as Ware. I hope the video shows my inaccuracy!
@@ftloc Well, I saw a lot of Chris Ware, but I wasn't taking a nuanced look
Now maybe you can see some Little Lulu in there too! 😁
To me, "Imbattable" is a bit redundant but it's a good introduction to Marc-Antoine Mathieu for children :D
I was completely expecting it to become redundant very fast, but for me at least these first two volumes avoid it admirably, by making longer stories, recurring characters with unique identities and interesting powers, and of course good storytelling.
For example, there's a gag where he throws his rake through the spokes of a fleeing motorcycle. While we've seen the panel break before, what I loved was the last panel of him raking leaves with just the rake head 😁
Was that a tear in Mr Invincible or actually how it was printed.
The villain has a corrosive ray that burns off the corner of the page, blending the moment with a single panel ahead and behind in time depending on which side of it the reader is on.
But short answer, printed that way by design and part of the story. 😁
IN has been on my to read list for a while . Will definitely pick it up soon
As is obvious, I'm a big fan right now, but I'd love to know what you think of it once you get a chance to read it!
@@ftloc will do! Thanks for the great content
@@burntdice2810 Thank YOU !
And sorry about that other-video reply that got posted in this thread for some reason...hopefully I've relocated it to its correct destination now.
@@ftloc no worries. I was just a bit confused at the context of that one lol
@@burntdice2810 someone asking why a certain book wasn't on a list, as we all tend to wonder 😁
