  • We're talking Tiffany & Co. stamps on Rolex watch dials - some Tiffany-Rolex history, a few examples of the stamp on different watches, and why the Tiffany stamped dials are SO EXPENSIVE.

In this episode, Christian and Anna dive into the story of Tiffany & Co. stamped Rolex watches, and just what makes them so expensive and desirable. To start, let's first establish what a Tiffany Stamp is. In short, it all comes down to co-branding, in this case the retailer (Tiffany) stamps the dial with their name or logo of an existing watch. For Tiffany, they reached out to Rolex to sell watches, with the condition that they could put their names on the watches. This was originally printed on by Tiffany themselves, though eventually Rolex began doing this for them before the watches ever left the factory.
This relationship lasted from the 1950s to the 1990s, and now that it has ceased, so much value has been applied to the nine letter stamp on the dial, likely because of this relative rarity. With that kind of value and premium comes counterfeits, likely because the Tiffany stamp on the dial demands a several THOUSAND dollar premium, sometimes into the five digits. The other thing that stands out about these examples is the fact that, of the hundreds of Rolex variations and small details that make certain examples more collectible than others is the fact that Tiffany isn't a small detail - it's a company and a name that people, watch geeks or not, will recognize and be able to associate with luxury which, when coupled with the Rolex name, creates a powerhouse of brand power on a single watch.

Personally, I think it's ridiculous to pay so much extra for a stamp that essentially only means it was at a certain location. My only exception to this would be if Omega would stamp lets say 100 special speedmasters with "to the moon", and then actually send them to the Moon and back.

Especially since they're relatively easy to fake and Tiffany kept no records of the watches that were stamped.

As a collector, the double-stamped dials are super cool IMO. There are so many ultra-nuanced details in the world of Rolex collectors...this is a detail that many can appreciate and that adds something fun and interesting to the dial.

Domino's has an interesting commanded Rolex watch that it gives to certain store owners for meeting certain sales numbers. The air max had a Domino's logo on the dial, and the current oyster perpetual has the domino's logo on the bracelet.

I recently found a 14kt gold Tiffany & Co. Bulova Accutron at an estate sale that was a gift from the President to the Governor of Hawaii. At first I was excited to find a 14kt gold Bulova Accutron but when I got home I noticed the Tiffany & Co. marking on the dial and figured it was a little more special and research the engraving on the back and it was given by President Lyndon B. Johnson to Jack A. Burns who was the Governor of Hawaii and was dated 1966

I haven't tried to price it yet. I really don't know where to start to research the price. I need to take it in and have it serviced since it was tucked away for many years and probably has its original battery still in it. It's a neat old watch and I talked to one of Lyndon Johnsons top Aides his name was Lloyd Hand and he said the President ordered many things from Tiffany but that he only gave out a few watches to people who were very close to him and not many were given away.

In 1984 or 1985 I received a Rolex Submariner from Tiffany & Co in San Francisco. That was the first problem. Second problem was that their, "stamp," on the dial is crooked. Third problem was that it has always kept really terrible time. When I took it back, soon after purchasing, they would not help me get it serviced through them or repair their, "stamp." These are good examples why they are no longer allowed carry Rolex.

It just doesn’t make sense for Rolex to do this kind of thing anymore. Originally it benefited Rolex for Tiffany to carry their watches so Tiffany could make demands. For a while it was mutually beneficial, and towards the end Tiffany was benefiting more from the relationship until Rolex pulled the plug.
In terms of rarity and value, it makes sense that something like this would be worth more than a standard model. How much more is really up to the people who buy this sort of thing to decide, as they keep outbidding each other for the last remaining examples of something. But the popularity of these things can fluctuate as well. How much is a piece of paper worth because Babe Ruth of Abraham Lincoln signed it?

Finally it doesn't matter what the brand means in the future it matters about what it means in the past, like nostalgia as many young entrepreneurs who make money in the future may have started their roots in reselling supreme when they were young; I for one did and it's why the watch will always be my grail as it reminds of my entrepreneurial spirit; and as watch geek how far i have come to own such an exclusive watch.
