In this episode of RANT&H, Christian and Anna get into what you should do once you decide that you want a Rolex in 4 steps.
Step 1: Do Your Research. If you're getting ready to spend several thousand dollars on a watch, it's helpful to not only understand the models the brand has on offer, but at least some basic history of the brand itself to help perhaps explain why their pricing is the way it is and how certain models developed over time.
Step 2: Choose a Model. Once you know that you want a Rolex, you'll need to decide which model you're interested in. For example, if you're someone that wears a suit every day, or generally lean towards the more formal side of things, then you may want to consider something like a Datejust or a Day-Date, and if you're generally a sportier individual, perhaps you're going to be more interested in something like a Submariner or a GMT Master II.
Step 3: Pre-Owned, Vintage, or New? This is the point where pricing and your budget really do come into play more than anything else. If you're going to go with a new model, the most common way to go is through a Rolex Authorized Dealer (AD), which will give you a chance to try piece on in person, but will definitely come with a premium price. If you want to go Pre-Owned, it gives you a chance to negotiate the price a bit since the premium is gone, and you're going to have to find a dealer that you trust. Then, if the piece you want is significantly older, then Vintage is the way to go no doubt. Many of the vintage sports Rolex models (like the GMT or the Submariner) have the potential to be more expensive than their modern counterparts, but there is still tremendous value to be had.
Step 4: Pull the Trigger. You've figured out what you want, you know how you're going to get it, and now all that's left to do is pull the trigger and get that new to you Rolex on your wrist.

I started buying and wearing new Rolex watches 40 years ago....
I wanted a stainless steel, automatic, pressure proof, watch with rugged robust reliability.
I bought a Submariner, then a dozen years later, an Explorer-II.
Once the new bracelets arrived, I was going to trade in and get some new watches.
Despite my AD offering 4 times what I paid to trade, they recommended I give them to my kids....so I did.
    I’ve since bought new Ex-1’s, Ex-2’s, DJ-41’s, and the new Steel-Blue/Red-GMT.
I’ve been offered several new Daytonas, Subs, Sea dwellers, etc, but passed.
To me, high-horology also means rugged-robustness-reliability.....and no one does that better than Rolex.
Too many complications and knobs only conflict with the knob wearing it.
PS: The Steel Professional craze is silly.....I’m just as happy with a Date-Just....
Simply find a nice steel Rolex and wear it....
    Thanks kids!! Love your channel!

The best reason to own a Rolex is they are go anywhere rugged. I used my Submariner during my whole Federal Law Enforcement career, during a Maritime Archaeology degree and it still looks as Classic as my Gold Presidential in a tuxedo.
Don’t just buy a ROLEX; snap it on and go have a few adventures worthy of a watch that your descendants will one day show off with pride.

Also don't know if I could go to the leather band. Don't know if it would be versatile enough for every day wear. I still wear the Movado with black dial I got for college graduation. Rolex is to watches as Ferrari is to sports cars. It’s the first that everyone knows, everyone can recognize them, and as you get into cars you can start to realize there may be better cars and more interesting manufacturers, but at the end of the day it’s still a Ferrari and there is still so much history and brand heritage that comes with that, I feel like the two go hand in hand.

Good luck finding a steel professional Rolex at an AD these days. You actually pay more than retail in the pre-owned market for those due to supply.
Also, I laugh at the comments saying Anna should get another watch. That thing is gorgeous, and has pretty much become her trademark. I don't blame her at all for wearing it exclusively.

How do you associate 'premium' with paying retail w/tax? To me, paying a 'premium' is paying above and beyond Rolex's advertised retail price. Take their Daytona for instance. A very popular model due to the recency of Paul Newman's Daytona which was auctioned for $15 million! Many grey market dealers are adding a 'premium' to their Daytona's, jacking the price to at/above $20K! This is about $8K above the $12,500 retail price. My advice; find a reputable AD who will sell to you for retail and is out of state and won't charge tax. Right there you are saving 8-10%. And if you can find a seller willing to give a discount, usually no more than 10%, then you've hit the jackpot!

    • @secondopinion6654
      @secondopinion6654 Před 5 lety

Premium is referring to the watches that depreciate from new. Normally retail means you're over paying when the one day old used version can be had for less. Right now that equation doesn't apply to Rolex sports models so paying retail for those at an AD is ideal. The high grey market prices on those is basically the cost of skipping the line. No AD will discount the high demand watches. A new Daytona at retail can certainly be had. You just have to wait a couple of years.

  • @florianfirlus4638
    @florianfirlus4638 Před 4 lety

Bro the only time you pay a premium is when you buy it second hand... Try going into a store and buying a brand new Submariner or Milgauss and let me know how many years the waiting list is.

David Salchert Hi look at pre owned but you may end up paying more than MSRP depending on various factors like if it has box and papers. Find a good preowned dealer like Jewellers on Time if in the US. Here in Australia the wait lists are longer though some people are playing the system by buying a gold Rolex so they have faster access to the Rolex steel sports stunners.

Unfortunately, grey market dealers sucked them up and asking for 2x the retail price.

David Salchert Clyve Watch Wrangler (CZcams Channel Name) has a date version he has been trying to sell. I don’t know the condition or if it has box / papers.

Keep calling ADs. I wanted a no-date sub and called 5 dealers. I got a call back the next day from one and had my watch in hand later that day. Apparently it just showed up at their store and the saleswoman knew I was looking. I didn't even know there was a shortage until I was paying for it and she told me. It was lucky, but it worked out. No waitlist. She just needed to know I was looking and that I was serious.

Sorry you are entirely wrong about paying a premium for a new Rolex purchased from a authorised dealer. Yes that does apply to Non steel sports models and precious metals. However....... However.....All stainless steel sports models are cheaper new from a Authorised dealer than pre owned. If you want a pre owned sub, Daytona, explorer, Gmt, etc you will be paying over retail for a recent example. They are simply not available at any Ad by simply walking in. That’s why the dealers insist on removing all plastic stickers etc. And... in some cases holding the warranty card for a period of months. In the past it would have been cheaper to buy pre owned but those days are long gone. In many areas you can’t even get onto the wait list (if they exist) Even the premier Rolex boutiques don’t have any stock of steel . Last week Hong Kong Airport guess what no steel Rolex. Dubai......no steel sports.

A lot of Rolex watches sell for more, considerably more on the secondary market than new. If you are really in the market for a Rolex you have got to do your homework. Some models can be had for 5 to 10 percent off in the store (oyster perpetual) and others like a Daytona sell for 12,500 to 20,000 can sell in upwards of 30k on the secondary market.
You have to go into the store and talk to the salesperson. Find out what the market is. Is it a hot watch? What's the demand? Saying there is a premium in the store isnt always true for Rolex or any of the really high end watches like Rolex, AP, Jacob & C.o., Panari to name a few.

The only problem i can see, is that many people are simply afraid to spend thousands on a watch.
Its that initial purchase price, that's what most first time purchasers find off putting, or intimidating.
Also, the most coveted steel sports models, cannot be purchased for their list price, simply because the demand for them is so high.
So you want a steel Submariner, well, you will have to pay more than retail price for your watch, and for most first time purchasers, that is a real issue.
Surely, no one should have to pay more than the retail price for a watch.
Unfortunately, when it comes to most Rolex models, that is exactly what one has to do.

eBay isn’t a bad place to find a deal. Just make sure you buy from a trusted seller and get it appraised / looked at by an authorized dealer. I saved a ton going this route and my watch is mint.

In my opinion, you didn't highlight the most important for each category. New : many steel models are NOT available and you have to wait for year (Daytona for example). Pre-owned : You might bye a fake Rolex. Vintage : You might buy a very expensive old Rolex with new parts, witch means that your watch has no more value.
