IF an AD starts showing me items that I've not expressed any interest in, they'll get one warning, after that, I'm gone, out the door never to return. Same applies when I buy a new laptop, I DON'T want 'Norton' installing, and I won't be buying additional 'accidental damage' protection. I've walked out of more than one place because of this, their loss not mine.

Hmm, I made your mistake number 1. I bought my Tag Heuer Link Chronograph (the Jason Bourne one) from EBay. 3 years old at half the price of new. Alarm bells right? So I actually drove 14 to Germany and back (wow, interesting trying to speak German again after a couple of years as the seller only spoke German). But they (a couple) were real watch freaks and the watch was immaculate! Everything was there, and I was lucky because it was the holiday time. And indeed, my watchmaker was very impressed with how good it was. But yes, I was really lucky. I do still have it (bought it in 2006) and still love it…

  • @PoltergeistWorks
    @PoltergeistWorks Před 2 lety +5

I don't completely agree with the Private Seller vs Dealers. Yes, that may be true that if you're completely new to watches the second might be safer, however I found the "pro" grey market dealers very often try to make the watch look brand new by refinishing the watch and "professionally" servicing it. That many times leads to lesser quality finish than factory finish, overpolished rounded edges, dust under the crystal, marks on the hands etc. (yes, I have experience with that). If you don't care about that stuff and only want something shiny with ROLEX on the dial that's fine, but I personally would not have a watch refinished by anyone other than the manufacturer and I rather have a watch with slight scuffs from a private seller than a "cleaned up" one from one of the professional dealers. I would only get one from them if it's brand new and unworn.

    Good points.
I'n my oppinion private offers are totally overrated.
I feel like 95% of the watsches are trash or unworth related to their (wet dream) prices of the ownet.
I get their thoughts: "I buy an expensive watch, but hey...after wearing and flexing I will sell for allmost same price."
There so many rocked down watches, full of scratches and flaws but thf prices are only 10% or never more than 20% less than originals. Comon...before buying and risiking a damaged movement, I pay the full price.
The average 20% off which is mentioned is only if the watch is as good as new condition.
    But the most didn't understood.
That's why many ads are staying for months till they are deleted without selling.

So, regarding selling your watch/waiting for a price: This entirely depends on what you value your opportunity cost of time -- selling for less but spending less time may be a net win.🤷‍♀ Unrelated: Your nose freckles are the cuuuutest!!!!

Hello. I had a question. This is a situation I find myself in. What about if you see a watch on a watch-selling website. You and the seller then agree to meet with the intention of buying providing everything checks out with the watch, instead of purchasing through the website? The owner is going to have to pay a fee for selling on the site. Makes the watch more expensive for me. If he doesn’t sell through the watch-selling website he can lower the price. I’m happy to have a reduction in price. But selling privately you loose any protection. What would you do? Buy the watch privately? I have asked to purchase the watch at a particular price. To do so he could sell outside of the website and accommodate me. For him it’s not issue. Just not sure what’s right.

A little disappointed with Jenni. Didn't think she would be such a paid salesman for chronext. Why ?
    1. "Reputed" Watch dealers /websites can sell fake / franken watches too. .. and it can be a hassle getting your money back there too . though I will admit that they do try to even pay you with a discount to not talk about it when they are really caught.
    2. Watch CZcamsrs have been caught as scammers too "Time" and again (iykyk)
So don't really trust CZcamsrs too much either.
Would have been happier if she mentioned these 2 points and not just hit out as private sellers being the only possible scams.

Great video as always. I am not new to watches but I've definitely done the impulse buy. Fortunately it was on cheaper watches so did't lose too much.

Service should be a big consideration too - some watches cost $1000 +/- for time to time reconditioning, where is the nearest authorized service, etc.

When I plan on buying a watch I research it first on price and true value meaning what it sells for and what the gray market is asking. I then look around to reputable AD's and see what they have. I sleep on it the following night before I buy it. I always say to myself " Just because its a good deal doesn't mean its a good deal for me at the time of purchase." Always take your time because you have to live with the decision after your new purchase. You dont have to compete with everyone else but just be happy with your purchase and plan on keeping it for a really long time and don't flip it... you will lose a large portion of what you initially paid for it.

I wear watches while traveling all the time, I been asked twice (that I remember) about the watch I was currently wearing, and have never been asked to produce a receipt (who would carry a receipt for something you bought three years ago? seriously) - you only get in trouble for telling on yourself - next

My first watch was a little wind-up Timex. I don’t care much about buying expensive timepieces because that little Timex worked for years and years. I didn’t feel any better when I bought my first 1800 dollar watch, so I sold it and went back to old vintage watches under 500 dollars.

Kind of a silly question I'm sure, but I was wondering when you are looking at a watch what makes you know that it is a watch for you? What kind of emotions are you feeling and how do you understand that it is a good watch for you.

Hence expand your knowledge and select your purchase for the love of the watch.

Hi Jenni, enjoying all the content. It’s been super helpful. I have a question you may be able to answer or at least offer some thoughts on. The Sinn U50 on a wrist that’s around 6” - 6 1/4”. I know it wears small but does it wear small enough for this size of wrist? Cheers a f thank you, Christopher.

Great Advice, don't spend money you don't have and #6. So many folks on a watch forum I frequent worry so much about the watch holding value and look that's great if it does or if it appreciates. However do not make that the reason you're buying the piece in the first place over another piece you like that may not hold value as well. If you're doing that you're in this hobby for all the wrong reasons.

Great advice. What do you think of ebay's authenticity guarantee scheme? I hear that you have to send the watch to a valuer who will check the watch and send it direct to the buyer if they win the auction.

If you're thinking one service every 5 years at $1000 then your watch costs $200p/a to own. Want to own a diver, chrono, dress watch, GMT, and special occasion watch and keep them in a watch winder? How does +$1000p/a sound to you?

Unfortunately I would say the market in watches that cost under seven or $8000 is about to go down in a big way you’ll see 50% wiped off the value of secondhand watches and reductions and sales left right and centre.
