Restoring a vintage item, especially furniture and jewelry like this watch bring down the value quite a bit. Guitars are another item that is more valuable in it's original state, even if played over the years, than if it was restored to look like new. On one episode of ARS, a woman had this 18th century dresser that had numerous drawers and was tall. She thought it looked shabby because of the fading of the finish and she hated the hardware so she had it professionally refinished and replaced all the knobs ( tossed out the original ones). She inherited it from a relative. In its current condition it was worth $30k, only because of the rarity of the piece and it was a Chippindale. If she had left it in its original condition and didn't do a thing to it other than dust it off it would have been worth $300k. It was only one of about 5 known in existence.

@Fred J3 Hey Fred , the fact that his was a family heirloom that was passed down to him is fantastic...I have items from my grandfather that I hold very dear.......not because they are highly valued but because they were from him......I'm sure he cherished it very much throughout the years and hopefully still owns it and did not sell it after getting it appraised as many do. My point is there is no reason to buy a watch that costs this much as all a watch does is tell time. You are buying the brand , which in this case, Rolex, is boring just like Omega ...If you want to buy an expensive watch at least buy a Brietling Navitimer 01 at least it's cool to look at......and I'll leave that G Shock to my grandkids cause ya know what ......I bet It will still be working ...unlike that Rolex ....That along with my properties ....plural.....I'm sure he will be real happy just like that kid in Grand Torino 🤣👍have a fantastic day!

I might be a pariah, but that is a watch and it's meant to be used, not kept in a vault; the owner has used it for 40 years, and it still works and looks beautiful - it has a history. For those reasons, in my opinion, a Rolex such as this one should be worth more than a similar one in mint condition.

This is a good lesson to us all , if you have vintage watch be very careful not to send to original manufacturer unless they can guarantee a sympathetic overhaul. I have my fathers omega Ck2915-1 from 1959 and over the years it has been serviced by Omega they have virtually changed every part to a more modern part, in result completely ruining the watch and its aesthetic appearance. I repeat, you don’t wear something with you everyday for decades without knowing what it is or doing some research. Even on basic repair information he would have learned enough about it to have a general idea of its value. A person who knows nothing about a watch like that would jump at the chance of getting it repaired and serviced. He knew more than he was letting on, either that or he’s incredibly dense.

Nothing was mentioned whether the watch came with the original box and papers; if so, that would add quite a bit more value! Also not mentioned is this model has the small triangle gmt hand which is very desirable and adds value! He does need to have the second pinion spring tightened down a bit to make the second hand less jumpy due to gravity! This model came with the “butterfly” 1565 calibre movement which beats around 18,000 bph. Awesome!

Rolex have always been good, but not necessarily the best. The fact that everyone goes nuts for them is a triumph of marketing.
