Sylvester Stallone on Why He's Selling His Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime & More | Sotheby's

- Sylvester Stallone, Academy Award-winning director, actor, writer, and producer - and passionate watch collector. It's our pleasure to announce that 11 pieces from Sly's legendary collection are coming to Sotheby's New York this June. The undisputed highlight is his Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime, the world’s most complicated wristwatch.
Widely considered a ‘holy grail’ amongst the watch community, Sly’s Grandmaster Chime is further distinguished as the first example to ever appear at auction. “The one thing that is pervasive throughout all these watches, is that they attract me emotionally. It’s not about keeping time, it’s about keeping in step with where you are in life,” says Stallone.
We're proud to present these watches as a part of the Important Watches sale on 5 June during Luxury Week, presented in partnership with Silversea.
N.B. The Grandmaster Chime is a handmade watch and, as such, has been touched by human hands. But you know what he means. It's never been worn since the day he took it home.

Stallone had more dialogue in this interview than his last 5 movies. Had no idea he still speaks so fluidly.
😂
I agree. So articulate and passionate about his love for watches. That was pure class!

True legend well said. And he got it out the mud
His movies practically raised us 80s American boys. Proud to be his fan, he’s lived a virtuous life and his watch collection is top tier.
Wish I could say the same for Arnie "screw your freedom" Schwarzenegger.
He didn't live a virtuous life, he was in po rn before he became famous. Don't be fooled by charisma!
@@Yoman0351 yeah, can't argue with that, though he pretty much came from nothing but still, he mostly preached hard work and never giving up and seems to practice what he preached. Never heard of him screwing other people over or getting into lascivious activities like so many others in his profession. He strikes me as a lucid, level headed man, pretty normal considering he's a Hollywood man and his daughters seem to adore him.

In Rocky 2, Rocky buys a Rolex for himself, Adrian and Pauly. Stallone's love for watches goes back a long time.
So true 👍🏻
Are you talking about the "Ex-Lax watch" Paulie smashes into the parking garage floor? =P
@@V3rt1g0s lol..yes, Paulie smashes the "Ex-Lax watch" in the beginning of Rocky 3.
In the first post-montage scene of Rocky 3, Rocky comes to bail Paulie out of jail. Paulie's angry that Rocky gave him a Rolex watch (which he called a "stinkin' exlax watch") instead of a meaningful job. He throws the watch on the ground and kicks it away. Paulie not a fan of Exlax watches lol
@@user-nb1ex7th2i ... it never kept good time anyway! 🤣
Totally understand his statement about buying watches to mark events in ones life. I dreamed forever to be a police officer. About seven years into the job I was doing well and working on a special crime team task force. I looked around and said, "I've made it." That was in 1992 and to commemorate that moment, I bought a submariner that I still wear today, and love. After 30 years of an awesome career I retired as a lieutenant. I had accomplished everything I wanted to do in law enforcement. I commemorated that with my brother who also retired with 30 years in law enforcement. We both loved Panera's, mainly because of Mr. Stallone bringing them to our attention. We both picked one up to acknowledge our careers.
That's an awesome story. I bet the "I've made it" moment you had was a damn good feeling. Congrats on your incredible career!
Absolute legend, dream watch collection. What I particularly appreciate (being a watch collector and a watch enthusiast myself) is the fact that he is ready and able to let go of things. I love the mindset of giving the opportunity to somebody else to own such beautiful pieces! I would buy the grand chime tomorrow if I had the cash for it!
Keep collecting them Temu watch’s lol
He's not 'giving' them to someone else to enjoy. He's selling them for a sizeable profit.
He seems down to earth, I'm glad that he shared some of his collection with us...virtually, prior to sale.
Down to earth? He argued with ha guy wearing a $3 watch.
@@albundy3929 Don't recall hearing he argued, his statement was that we buy watches for the objects they are and how they relate to us, guess we would all wear a $3 watch telling time was all we wanted to do, instead we carry $600+ Cell Phones to tell the time 🤣

Registered to bid and cannot wait. Thanks to Mr Stallone for sharing these. As a huge fan and fellow watch enthusiast what an absolute honour to be able to participate.
He’s most famous for playing characters in the movies who are especially inarticulate, so a lot of people might not know what a thoughtful and intelligent man he is. I can’t even start to state how this guy shaped my life in so many ways since I was 5 years old
I’m a watch guy myself and I’ve been lucky enough to own some really nice watches but nothing on the level of Sly’s collection but then again not many of us will ever get close to his collection. If these are what he’s selling can you even imagine what he’s kept? I bet it’s awe inspiring. The Patek Grand Master is definitely the pinnacle, however I recently acquired my W serial Rolex Sea Dweller and it’s a really minty example and I feel blessed to be able to have something so frivolous in nature. My 9 year old wears a little digital watch and like Sly said, we both have the exact same time keeping ability, however every morning when I put my Sea Dweller on it makes me feel special. That’s why I like my Rolex watches, they make me feel special.
nobody cares, but enjoy your gadgets!
Sly truly helps set the sporty wrist watch trends for Men. THANK YOU!
Sly all beautiful watches. Your looking great rocky👍👍
I can honestly say he is by far one of my favorite actors and just One of my favorite people, but listen to and just take advice from what he said about. Watches, he's right. A watch means nothing an apple watch can do more than a Rolex. But you know what? I bought my first Rolex. And it's nothing special but it was a sense of accomplishment because I couldn't afford it. When I first started working my butt off. At the same job for 7 or 8 years, it's still tough for me to afford it. But I've earned it. I respect this. Gentleman, I respect all his dedication to his family and I respect that he speaks. What's on this. He's had a very good life. People would be so lucky to have accomplished anywhere near what this fellow has. I'm proud of him. I don't even know him.
It's nice to see someone celebrate their own success publicly and not shy away from it. More people should be happy for the wealthy and strive to improve themselves.

Great video. I love the analogy Sly gives at the beginning about the guy with the cheap watch saying his watch tells the same time as Sly's very expensive watch. Sly goes on to say that watch collecting for him has not been about a watch's ability to tell the time, rather the way each watch marks a time in his life and his watch collecting journey. Such a salient point; I've always taken joy in my modest collection and thought about them in the same manner. It's the emotion and backstory that goes with each watch.
I love this man. His two greatest movies in my humble opinion, Rocky and First Blood are his greatest works and epitomize integrity and dedication. And I believe his soul is in those films and is what made them great. Personally I am not a watch collector but still enjoy their incredible beauty and intricacy.

@@JuanGonzales-nm7uz It's just a really bad one. The guys worth tens of millions and that's the best rug he can find?
He really does have the best watch of our generation, but.. The creators being Patek Philippe wanted the watch to be owned by a distinguished individual, and for him to sell it feels like a disservice to the watch and its purpose.
An appropriate truth also is….
No object can satisfy the human heart over time.

Proverbs 27:20.)
Still, Love Stallone !
Not pretentious. Tells you exactly why he bought his watches.
Up front and personal.

Thanks for the moments of joyful escapism you gave us throughout the years.
Hi Mr. Stallone, I own a Timex watch that does nothing else other than telling the time. Oh, it has Indiglo which allows you to see the time in the dark. I wear it whenever I leave my home. I often dreamed of having a nice watch (something in the $200 range), but if you would like to have my watch, I wouldn't mind passing it on to you to enjoy. You could wear this watch and when people see it on your wrist they would think "Oh, that's not Sly, the guy wearing that Timex is broke". 😂
After putting so much effort into the acquisition of that Patek, with Patek accepting him and personalising it, why does he not simply bequeath it to a family member.
i cannot wrap my head around it, like one of most complicated expensive watches ever made and you have to beg people to be able to purchase it just to never even take it out of the plastic lol
cant even "admire it", you cant see the watch from the plastic. waste of space
Maybe they are not watch people. It looses all the value when you dont care about it. He will probably fund something more meaningful with that money.
He has only daughters who care about dresses not watches for men
These watches should only go to collectors (not flippers!) who truly admires and are really into watches, I doubt any of his family members are into watches like he does. I mean, I would have auction it off too if I notice my children are wearing Apple watches as their daily drivers and has no passion whatsoever about watches
Probably because his other family members aren’t enthusiasts and don’t appreciate them the way he and many others do? 🤷♂️ He would probably rather see them go to people that value them beyond their price tags and at the same time, see how much they’ve appreciated with time, exclusivity and celebrity history attached. 👍
Yup, some of us still remember Flip...
that is a Great story, and Lesson!
A true collector and connoisseur. Of course it's not about showing the time. It's about the technology, the precise workmanship and sometimes the value. This is what a watch collector wants and looks for. It doesn’t matter if it’s $500 or $50,000.
Listen to the way he talks: clear, intelligent, precise, intellectual, creative and thoughtful language. Just listening to this guy makes you happy.
Sly has two of the brands in the holy trinity. He also has the holy grail of PP. While I'm throwing around religious terms, he has also violated the first two commandments of PP. The first commandment states: Thou shalt not possess a Patek, only to be unworn and tucked away. The second commandment violated is: Thou shalt not flippith a Patek.
lol, especially one that you wrote essays for and have your name engraved on the dang box. My goodness lol.
@@WordMadeFlesh777 Exactly. This news that he plans to auction it, along with a few other PPs cannot have gone over well with the Sterns.
PP does not call the shots. Stallone those…..get real folks. Money and connections talk and Stallone can get anything and mean anything his heart desires! You are seeing real power and wealth before your eyes. Nothing more to say. That is just how the world works.
I just bought an Omega Planet Ocean; I know what he means when he says it gives you a sense of accomplishment. I'll never be able to afford any of the watches in Mr. Stallone's collection, but I feel kindred friendship with Mr. Stallone through watch collecting!

Blue dial, Rose gold AP: 😍
But also, that final Patek - “admiring” it thru crappy plastic seems nonsensical (in terms of truly enjoying). But I get what it means for the value of the watch.
Judging by his comment that fine watches are about “keeping step with where you are in life” he admires it on a deeper level, almost metaphorically. So in that case the plastic is irrelevant.
From South Africa...on the moment they show all Rocky and a lot of his films...I just luv this man and enjoy his movies...all the best SYLVESTER...
Sylvester is still a very great person. It was very interesting to listen to him. he has not forgotten from where he comes from. Hope these watches find new owner that will appreciate its history.
Stallone doesn't get enough credit for what he's done for the watch industry. Single-handedly made Panerai a thing, yet he didn't start or stop there. He collects top tier and then, in the case of Patek's, goes a step above standard. That Greg Allman story was awesome. I love the dude for his music, but apparently he was ahead of his time as well with watches!
It's very cool. Mad respect for this guy.

this man made Philly a place to see and go. Thanks Roc
Does selling the 6300 get you ban from ADs?
I think so! If I would be one of the Sterns I would ban him to by any Patek after this.
I believe after a set amount of years thats void and you can do as you see fit; similar too luxury cars with the same buyer agreement(s)
@@emiljimenez803 i think after 5 years you wont get ban. after that, you still can buy PP model, but no the same model that you sold. that 5 years gestation/blackout period is to prevent flippers.
I think it largely depends on how you approach the sale.
I could be wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if Sylvester Stallone approached Patek to let them know he would be selling the watch and sort of asked for permission/forgiveness. Maybe he's fallen out of love with the piece, maybe he needs the money. There's lots of reasonable explanations for selling this watch but the process should be handled delicately and with respect.
The above is a far cry from flipping the watch within months of buying it and not informing Patek that you're looking to let go of it for xyz reason. Person A is probably deprioritised as a client, no longer given access to the most sought after Patek's, but not banned and might have the chance to gain access to the more sought after pieces in the coming years. Person B is banned for life with no opportunity for redemption.
He is getting old and probably wanted the watch to go to another collector that would cherish it like he did.

I doubt he “needs” the money. These watches are a small portion of his collection - but I also agree, you’d think he would send that Cartier back to them for their museum, since they gave it to him. I get it, he’s 70 years old. I’m in my early 50s and have started consolidating my watch collection - mostly because I don’t want them (the watches) to be a burden to my family if something should happen to me. At least I can sell some of them now, and make sure I am getting fair prices - rather than my wife get ripped off by some shark after I’m gone.

Shame on PP to have sold him a watch he never even upacked......wrong customer.
I wonder how the brands feel about him selling piece unique’s 🤔
Brands don't have to feel anything. We're the customers and we pay them and they provide the goods for us to do anything we want with it.
Probably indifferent since he has owned the pieces for an awhile and has good relationships with the manufacturers. Celebrity immunity doesn’t hurt either, and free PR for the brands.
I’m guessing that between the length of time he’s owned it, the fact that it’s not a flip and they engraved his name on everything makes it an easier pill for them to swallow. 😉
Especially those Cartier and Panerai pieces, id be pretty down as an owner and friend, if i made a piece unique for a person and hed put that up for auction.
I've learned more about Sylvester Stallone in these 11 minutes than in all his films, that I've seen, combined. A erudite man in real life, quite different from his film persona. Respect.

That will be a genuine regret in his life to have toiled and begged and pleaded to eventually be granted the privilege of owning the rarest most coveted watch of all time to then only see it, touch it and experience it through a 5p plastic bag. No point in owning it at all. If this is enjoying something then I’m doing it wrong. I would’ve loved to hear about him wearing this on the beach and on set and banging it around - now that is enjoying something, he can absolutely afford it. Come on Sly, you’re better than this bud.
Agree.
He's 78 years old, it's a better time to sell than to die and have this collection fall into the wrong hands.
@@aimz-_-skilzz-_8488 I hear you but you miss my point. Pass on by all means but enjoy the thing, don’t keep it in a plastic bag like a stick of salami, especially with his wealth. In fact I’d say any wear and tear inflicted on it by him may even increase its worth!
It's ugly anyway
He has a wonderful personality! And the watches are just mindblowing.
A true collector unpacks his pieces and wears them from time to time. A speculator keeps it in the safe for it looks like brand new when cashing in.

Tell that to his $400 million net worth.
Yea dude has crazy money
Stallone is a serious collector. If he needed the money, I imagine he would make a movie, sell some real-estate or whatever else he collects. Maybe he just feels like it’s time to sell his watches that he probably keeps in a box in a safe and doesn’t wear often anyway.
