In Part 2 of his Rolex History, Michael dives into how Rolex put themselves on the map. Mercedes Gleitze, for example, swam across the English Channel in 1927 with a Rolex strapped around her neck, helping to cement to the world the water resistance of a Rolex watch long before the Submariner became even a concept drawing. Then, in 1933, Douglas Hamilton and Colonel Stewart Blackard flew a bi-plane over Mount Everest while wearing Rolexes. Much of the 1920s and 30s was filled with this kind of high achievement in human experience while wearing a Rolex, and this transferred itself into World War II as well, where pilots whose watches had been confiscated would be sent Rolexes directly by Hans Wilsdorf.
One such example of this was the famous "Great Escape," in which a Rolex Oyster 3525 was ordered by Corporal Clive James Nutting for what was assumed to be used in timing the guards of the prison camp and managing the escape. By being at all of these major historical events, Rolex has managed an association with all manner of adventure and achievement, an association that is present to this day. - Jak na to + styl
Guys, if we're talking about heritage, MVMT Watches clearly takes the cake here. No one can beat their rich history. Alpha M covered this thoroughly in his video already.
Stuart Henry
I hate that people don’t acknowledge MVMT’s heritage. 😂
😂
LMAO!
Great video, you should do more of them. Like al the knowledge and your style. Keep the good work.
Great guy! More of this, please. So entertaining and informative. Really good. Thx
Awesome video!! Keep making them. Cheers 🥂 happy new year 🎊
Thank you and back at you!!!
Another great video. Thanks and Happy New Year!
To you too!!!!!
These are Great Michael!!
First class video Michael, happy new year!
You too!!!!!
Did we ever get a part 3 of this series? I couldn’t find it.
Hi ! Great video. Have you done the part 3 ?
this guy is great, very good content and presentation.
Great video and energy! Mercedes was pretty much forced to wear the watch, Hans had asked her many times before to wear it... however on the day of the event the press along with Hans, pressured her into wearing it.
Also the very first water resistant watch was not produced by Rolex/Hans and I'm positive that Hans would have known this from his studies. The first recorded information we have on a water resistant watch is from 1851 at the Great Exhibition held in Hyde Park, London. A pocket watch was suspended in the middle of a large round bowl filled with water and tropical fish. The timepiece was produced by W. Pettit & Sons.
Brilliant video! I'm a rolex fanboy, but I learnt a lot here ! Thanks !
Thanks for doing the vid, featured it in one of our pieces. Keep 'em coming.
Biplanes are as safe as any other airplane. Maybe not as warm but just as safe. The speedmaster was used to time the 2 engine burns in Apollo 13 needed to get to the moon and to pull away from the moons gravity and go back to earth. They couldn't use their guidance computer because they had to save battery power so they lined the earth up in their window and timed the engine burn with the Omega speedmaster.
Those old Rolex ads were amazing. So cool.
The history of Panerai in WWII is fascinating. Love to see a video on that.
Another great Michael vid. Such a strong contribution to the channel. T&H would be a much weaker YT channel without him
This is one of the coolest vids Ive seen in a while
Thank you!!!!
Wilsdorf was an orphan and his uncle took him in and gave him a job at 17. I've been curious about what happened to his parents, but all i can learn is that they were struck by illness. It's still very sad, and it's amazing he was able to accomplish so much after such tragedy.
Enjoyed the video! Can't wait for part 3!
13:03 Omega Speedmaster "timing" was Apollo 13 - Computer was down, not enough battery to reboot, but had to do a "burn" to course correct so they could re-enter earth safely. They used the speedmaster to properly time the length of firing the engines. Saved their lives.
That chap is great! Please make more vids ! Cheers!
Good pictures!
Great vid as always
Next history video should be on Omega
Thanks for the suggestion!!! Happy New Year!!!
Good video
We probably don't need "watch fam" in every video
Hahahaha totally agree, Michael puts so much effort into his videos, more Michael, less Christian.
I hope part 3 will include the Rolex 5100 Beta-21 quartz watch
Dude, why are you so hilarious? Great video by the way.
Born in 1995? God, I feel old.
Happy New Year.
Hahahaha!! You too!!
I see Michael, instant like
I see Christian, instant dislike
Gabe Johnston me too!!!
They timed the precise moment to fire their boosters after the systems had failed. If it weren't for the watch they would havw been lost in space.
W has a V sound in German, so the surname Wilsdorf sounds like “Vilsdorf”
Do a weekly vid!
Happy happy new year
First GMT watch was from TISSOT TISSOT NAVIGATOR!
Where the f@%! is part 3?
Nice job
Gad damn !
Are you the brain of Theo and Harris channel ?
I`ve heard these stories many many times. But this time....it was different :)
My second favorite movie about Rolex. The first is always - czcams.com/video/3UHBHLzM6Cg/video.html
Can you slow down a bit
Christian looks so different without his glasses.
Hahahaha!!!!! Happy New Year!!!!
👏👏👏
Mercedes is my grandmother. I wish I was half the woman she was. The correct pronunciation of her surname is like 'Glights'
the music in the background is super annoying
Rolex doesn't represent adventure anymore. You see so many modern Rolex sports models in pristine condition. I saw a guy with 5 year old Sub that looked brand new. It's actually kind of sad to see that watch is pampered and never sees open water, discovery, or peril. It's like owning a 4 wheel drive that never sees mud....
Jay Sikes I wear my Rolex Explorer 114270 for hiking and mountain climbing and pretty much everything.
@@Agrippa31BC I love it! That's what I call living life and enjoying your watch. I dare say you're the exception though. Most punters don't wanna get any scratches or dirt, LOL.
Hahahah like my jeep!!!!
Rolex shouldn't worry too much about the Omega Speedy. No one went to the moon anyways.
Yea! It's New Year's! ... Ugh ... It's the *B Team* on Theo & Harris ... 😒
Good, study the saints... ):
My mom , correction from previous post, was asked to swim Lake Ontario
You pronounced it /him use fine
Every time you pronounce something I have to stop the video and take several deep breaths to control my blood pressure.
Hang on! They were in preson and they all ordered rolex watces by mail? How was that ok to Germans? I know to hace problem with dhl over amazon order in centar of europe and they blody had waches delivered on prison in ww2?!
Btw... Mercedes is sexy as hell
Cool videos :)
I meant to say , just fine
2:07 I hope that you stop doing this because it is a needless way to confuse consumers. Bumper movements are still automatic, winding movements. If you doing this, confused customers, good night it’s just a needless shooting yourself in the foot
Hahahahaha, that’s me
Daniel Katz good Christ, calm down
How could Rolex get credit !
It was just marketing
I forgive youuuuu about the -S
Damn , i wonder if you caught the flu from me
Excuse all the posts, last one, had no idea about the swimmer across the English Channel, my mom walked at that time to swim across Lake Ontario as the first woman, but grandpa refused, did not want one of several daughters to become famous and ruin the social family dynamic. She knew about the woman that did the Channel as a beacon, but i did not know, not at al, that her name was Mercedes
If you wish to be taken seriously, may I suggest you get your facts and pronunciations right before you film?
Just stop making videos please.... by the way, the first 360° Rotor was created by Eterna....
First, let me say, I am not a fan of your machine gun delivery. Secondly, I believe that if you are going to discuss the history, of anything, the VERY least you could do is learn how to pronounce names correctly or don't mention them. Just saying.
