- Reviews are finally available for Forspoken, and while we scored it a 7 - not the worst, but not the best - overall impressions have been mixed. On Metacritic, it has an average Metascore of 68 from 61 critical reviews. There are several 8+ ratings, but the vast majority range from a 6 to a 7.3, with the lowest being a 4.
If you enjoy Forspoken, absolutely nothing is wrong with that. Plenty of games haven't received universal praise and are still incredibly fun. Luminous Productions will doubtless take the criticisms to heart and do everything possible to improve the game. I don't see a rewrite for the script anytime soon, but maybe those who enjoyed Forspoken's combat and running around in Athia will have it better later.
After listening to the video, why did you guys at Gamingbolt give "Forspoken" an 7 out of 10? Everything you mentioned didn't deserve such a high score.
Probably because it has its good points. It has glimpses of excellence, but disappoints in many areas.

If you think about it, very few games get below a 5. So the reality is that games are really rated 5-10. It gets a 7 which is middling. As I stated before it has some good points. Traversal and combat can be fun, but the story and characters miss the mark.
For me, it's the edgy teenager and the dialogues that killed it.

You clearly haven't played this game. Empty world, dumb enemies, forced cutscenes, dogde and run at the same button, difficult to move camera while you're fighting.. it's all so bad.
I just don't get, why she is annoying from start to finish. I watch gameplays and she seems like... she didn't even have character growth. Same annoying girl from beginning to end which is sad because the edgy teen would make sense for at least the beginning of the game. Really, really bad writing in overall.
The fact Square Enix blacklists reviewers who don't praise their games is a major red flag for anything Square Enix releases. I knew this game was a disaster when every critical reviewer never got a review copy.
Have you seen how many bad reviews it's gotten? From people that got a review code?! Personally I love it, but i get it's not for everyone.

the voice acting in the trailers should have been a warning sign. All the trailers and the demo was, was a glorified graphic demo. And not even the graphics looks amazing.

Luminous always struggled with strengthening their vision. Even FFXV looked uncertain for everything it did: combat, world building, story, skill tree system, UI design... all of this has changed so many times during development

peter parker is the best example of an argument against what you're saying. The main reason why he got famous as a character was because he was your regular college smartass and your friendly neighborhood spiderman. They made him a relatable new york kid and that's why he's the most successful character of the marvel franchise. The difference is clearly in the level of writing it takes to not force the traits on the character and make it look like it was customized for a story but to make it feel like the character is an actual person that exists in that world being described.

I'm still amazed how well Zelda Windwaker looks, a GameCube game. These developers have their priorities all wack.
Even Sonic Frontiers was doing well this holiday season. In the U.S, Frontiers finished 6th in Dec following a 4th debut with games like Ragnarok, MW2, and it's was at the top 20th selling overall in 2022. In UK After a no. 7 debut, Frontiers finished 10th in the UK + sales boost in the week reported before holidays. I bet if Forspoken was a Sony's ip, some 1st party development studios like Sucker Punch, Santa Monica, would have treat her better. I'm glad FFXVI wasn't whole open-world, and that's a good thing.

Whenever a new game is announced and there is hype around it, I immediately presume it will be bad and I am right 90% of the time.
The only good new releases seem to be indie titles, everything else from the AAA industry is just souls like, battle royals or just plain boring reboots. Then some sucker blows $120 pre-ordering a terrible game and tries to convince himself and everyone else on the internet that he didnt flush his money down the drain so he makes videos about how good it is.
To say that the AAA industry is dead is a understatement, its buried and rotting.

It’s an absolute stay away from me kind of game. Like saints row reboot. I read it’s unrecognizable from its original pitch by the original creator. The game was not supposed to be like this at all.

Fantasy games are not that overused, its just that we are still not sure how to add a believable modern character into one. A character that is not talking like a bland teenager that is part of the zoomer generation. We need more a character from generation Y.

Something I don’t feel many people pointing out is the UI. In the original UE5 tech demo that inspired this game, and ALL of the trailers up until the final marketing cycle, the visual appeal of this game was its minimalistic, clean wide open view of the world. A girl vaulting and soaring through beautiful landscape with NO intrusive UI. The game’s UI at launch is so tacky. Even without the other issues that was a core appeal of the game to me. I know that sounds strange but it makes a big difference.

It's disappointing but it really feels like Square has lost touch with consumers over the decades. I used to be such a FF fan growing up, I'd consume anything and everything with the Square name on it. These days the logo is more of a red flag than anything else.
Not to mention their plan on 'eneftee' and crypt0. They are going to keep walking straight into their fall if they're keeping this up.
But yeah, no one cares, as some people wishes for SE to fall.

Back when the teaser came out and the name was still Project Athia it looked very promising. Until I played the demo I still thought it’s gonna be great. But the Dialoge and the controls are an absolute catastrophe. And I usually love characters interacting outside cutscenes but I was annoyed within the first 10 minutes of playing

Yup, original idea was akin to those original trailers. You'd have the open world and speedy parkour still, but there would be self contained biomes where the devs would introduce set pieces, mental looking weather effects and more. But after TH left and new ideas were introduced, we were all left with a tech demo, assets placed randomly and an ultimately rushed game.

The burnout from bad storytelling in games will be so immense that it will either destroy this form of entertainment forever - as Star Trek predicted - and is taken over by genuinely passionate creatives, but will never get as large as it is now. Or they learn to actually create good games and stories. For some reason, I'm betting on the former.
Bad storytelling (a hotly debatable subject) has never and will never destroy gaming. Multiplayer gaming has the highest play counts and has little to no story whatsoever. Elden Ring has a story only if you Google it or can pretend vague poetry every 5hrs is a story, and it got game of the year(and deserved it). But also there are a ton of games with great stories. For every cheesy JRPG there is a Persona or Scarlet Nexus. For every cringe piece of dialogue in Forspoken there is a masterpiece line in God of War. For every PUBG or Fortnite there is a Beacon Pines or Citizen Sleeper or Norco or Disco Elysium or It Takes Two. Mario barely has a story and those games are some the most polished and innovative games to hit the market consistently. If you want stories in games...they're out there in droves. But finding them is like finding a good movie or TV show or book or comic... you'll wade through capitalistic monotony and failed creative experiments to find them.

Totally agree, it's not about developing games for maximum player enjoyment but for most ridiculous monetization it feels like.
I recently got steam deck and it's so nice to replay many older games, you can feel the shift from those going to recent releases.

I just saw this game, at first I thought it was cool because of the Enemies like the Tantas especially that Saint looking Water Witch or something but the actual MC and their dialogue kinda threw me off in a bad way, in which it was quite bad which is unfortunate really...
I don't think ive seen a single piece of media with this actress where her acting is good and the writing is good. Charlies Angels, Resident Evil netflix and now this. She has to have the worst luck.

It fails as a game by removing control from the player too often, either by cut scenes or scripting (biggest flaw and cannot be fixed).
It fails technically because it runs horribly for how mediocre it looks.
It fails in narrative because of its cringe, poorly written dialogue and nightmare inducing facial animations.
Looks like a big 0 to me.

Just played this Game all they way through and am now in the post game. still with stuff to do. 40 hrs in an apparent 20 hour game. people clearly didn't dive deep enough, and most likely rushed through everything without ever taking their time to smell the roses as it were. this is basically a final fantasy game and written like one. The story is actually rich with a great world lore meant to be discovered. and the DLC is great in that aspect too. But you got to take your time once in a while. actually do some reading in the massive archive you build over the course of game. And don't rush the main quests, take time to explore areas, upgrade equipment etc..
The combat is actually very fast paced if you're actually moving around and dodging most of the time.( what I saw in the video was utter noob worthy, standing still, no spells unlocked, poor understanding of how combat works) Learning how to use your spells effectively and what is good in what situations is something that takes time and experimentation. The versatility in how you can approach any situation especially by the end game is amazing. This game is definitely one of the most underrated titles ever. truly a treasure. What happened is Gen Z people wrote the cringiest dialog they could come up with for the game.
Three of the writers are in their mid to late 50s, the fourth one is in her late 30s to early 40s. Blame Gen X and boomers for this mess

Just remember this game and High on Life tied metascores.. At this point I don't listen or watch critics cause there seems to be a disconnect with them and ACTUAL players.. It's like NONE of these guy make genuine criticisms anymore.. It's like just saying trash is great and greatness is "generic and boring".. The fact they gave the game a seven just to smoke it's boots like the 4 to 5 it is, is amazing and shows these guys will make that check before being honest..

I was barely interested in it before playing the demo so I thought I'd give it a try.
I deleted it after the first combat encounter. The combat seemed really awkward and didn't flow at all, with no tutorial I had no idea whether there was something I was doing wrong or if that's just how the game was.

The demo killed my interest, but I'm still grateful for it. I didn't like the combat and was surprised to see how much of an rpg it was with the skill trees. I don't like all that stuff, and would have been pissed if I wasted money buying what clearly isn't my type of game.

nah, they'll release the fixed edition DLC and put a hefty price tag on it and ultimately asked you to pay again on the final edition where they don't sell the exclusive final DLC separately. I still felt that sting on FFXV and Outriders.

Id Buy it on sale. I liked Ghostwire Tokyo more then the moast since I love Japan and their mythology. This could feel like Ghostwire, but it sounds like a bland 90s action game with cringe script and barren world.

the game isn't bad tbh, nowadays alot of people go into games expecting the most instead of playing games for what they are. the story could have been written better tho, that's the problem.
square bragged that they were able to use AI to procedurally generate the world from the beginning. it shows.

They sold most of their popular titles like Deus Ex and Tomb Raider.
They are just fantasy focused nerds that fail even in that department. The only franchise they like kissing its ass is Final Fantasy and even with the remakes they seem to slip.

Im surprised you gave it a 7. This game is a 5 and that's being generous. The bland world, repetitive combat, bad lip sync and terrible dialogue this game was bound to fail and be forgotten by summer. I hope the sales stay low so Square Enix can start giving better games.

There was a time when the term "open world" would elicit excitement from me, but now I hate it and I see it as a red flag that would put me in a "wait and see" mode. Devs keep touting it as a major feature in their games but often end up delivering an empty barren waste of space. What's even the point of making it open world if it's got nothing in it, I'd rather have a semi linear experience. 🤷🤦

Having fun with the game, mostly because I had no expectations and used it as a placeholder until Hogwarts Legacy drops. Sorry for those of you that expected more.

Sqaure enix trying to appeal to the western audience, which equals horrible dialogue choices.
Also, when the review embargo is lifted the day before release, that doesn't show much confidence from square.
On the other hand, you had Nintendo lift the embago 3 days before the release of Fire Emblem Engage. May be getting mixed reviews, but they at least showed confidence.
Let's not act like some Japanese games don't have awful dialogue. If I were to cherry pick I would pick something out of an older Star Ocean game. Forspoken seems to lack vision and is trying way too hard with making the dialogue sound modern.

I tried the demo and the dialogue didn't work for me. I couldn't get invested into this. I removed the demo soon after.

I’ve put 30 hours into this game thus far, and the only thing I can gather is that gamers now are just too entitled and spoiled.
There’s nothing wrong with the game….
Is it the greatest game ever? No, but it’s by no means a bad game. The biggest gripes that I see is the dialogue. Which apparently is bad because it’s “too edgy” and that the protagonist “talks too much”.
Those same people said the same thing about Horizon Forbidden West, but it didn’t bother me at all. People want to complain about “edgy” dialogue, but it’s pretty obviously supposed to come off as funny banter. So people will critique this game for doing it, but praise games like The Last of Us for doing the same thing….?
People bashed The Callisto Protocol as well, and that game was easily a 9/10 for me.
People also critique this game for its “empty” world, but Breath of the Wild was just as empty to me.

I'm not one to pass a game until iv tried it. Il check out the demo and see if I can turn off the dialogue because I already know it will make me batty. The combat looks fun if it's not over complicated.
The combat feels very unintuitive. Dare i say clunky? It certainly doesn't flow very well.
