I growed up in the 70s and 80s and even us diehard zepplin fans LOVED these cat's you knew it was the CAR'S 5 second's into the song..........AWESOME time to be young.
Always thought this song to be a punch in the face. Just takes your head off from start to finish. Wish there were a demo out there somewhere. Awesome song.
What a fuckin' breath of fresh air after that old blues derivative was so played by '75. - Thank you, Ric Ocasek, for your screwiness, and blessing us with Benjamin Orr.
@@rhpslover1220 i believe willy nilly is referring to how ric found ben singing for the grasshoppers around 1970 and asked ben to join him in forming Milkwood, a precursor to the cars
This was recorded in a church auditorium in Topeka, KS where the Cars practiced right before they became famous. I was a junior in high school and the crowd was all high school kids. The girl on the cover of their first album is one of my friends from school and 17 when the album was released. True story. :)
Ben, we could listen and watch your videos over and over again! Ric, great songwriter, great band! So magnetic. once in a lifetime galaxy type singer, and women's aphrodisiac!
So raw and so awesome. I just love this! The whole album was just amazing yet it did not get enough recognition. Nightspots, Since I Held You, Lust For Kicks, all amazing. I would try to copy Elliot on the first two copies with my cheap Memphis guitar.
If I'm not mistaken this was recorded at a venue in Topeka, KS before they went to England. They spent some time in Kansas City playing in bars to perfect their stage presence and came to Topeka to rent larger spaces and fine tune their sound. I was a junior in high school and my mom knew them. That's me going whoo! at the end of the video. No one knew who they were yet and a bunch of high schoolers were there having a blast.
Here's another fun fact: the girl on the cover of their first album was a friend I went to school with. She was 16 when the picture was taken. Her mother didn't want her name released and her eye color was changed in the picture because she has huge green eyes and her mom thought she would be recognized. She went to a few radio promotions that summer with the band before school started in the fall.
Ben orr's voice is brilliant, what an amazing combination. Excellent. Wish I'd have seen them back in this era. I was following the 'punk' bands at this time and saw many of them live over here but I can't remember the cars ever playing anywhere near me.
Best thing to come out of Boston The Cars have forged a path not many can follow Every song a hit So appealing to me They were more form than fashion Take that KISS!!
Holy Crap!! Thanks dude for posting this, absolutly one of my favorite bands!! Benjamin Orr was so cool. RIP . This one of the first songs I ever learned how to play! Thanks again!
I could say I bought the album for the cover but seriously I'd heard the song Candy O first and loved it and of course I already had the first album. Cars really were fabulous musicians.
well wiggyboy6, if you are still out there, I invite you to watch the band do this at Musikladen in Germany for German Radio studio. The whole concert is out there but you can cut right to the chase for Candy-O w/ the search "The Cars - Candy-O 1979" uploaded by benny11letters It is mesmerizing, erotic, psychedelic, wild! The band cuts loose: Elliot's a beast tearing it up and Ben couldn't get much more elegant and gorgeous in fitted black frock-coat and leather pants and a burgundy silk choker around his neck. He exuded cool and sexy with every move, every look. ~~~didn't notice anybody else on stage but those two.;)
The way Ben Orr puckers his cheeks and blinks His eyes:peculiar your star thats who you are its Just a quirk)perfect for him: God bless his heavenly sole
Candy Moore was the head & face on the album. Nancy Beth modeled on the hood a a Ferrari for the body. Alberto Vargas was the artist who drew the album cover.
I'm baffled. I have a real hard time understanding why Ric Ocasek was the front runner in this band. I'll have to look into it. I know he produced and wrote to some degree, but Benjamin Orr sung pretty much every song I like from the band, and the lead guitar gave them their distinctive sound. What the hell was Ric doing? Sorry about that Ric fans.
Ric called all the shots and that's sad . He didn't get the cars going on his own , Benjamin was right there to. He was obviously a control freak and there was no room for the other 4 to contribute. Look at the videos drive and hello , or hello again whatever it's called, why was huttun n Warhol brought in , why couldn't one of the band members direct it and allowed to make the money that was wasted on Warhol n Hutton ? It doesn't make any sense.
My understanding is that Ric was the songwriter, so he really had the final say in most of the decisions and the direction of the band. I think he overall did make good musical choices, and let Ben be the lead singer on the best songs.
Benn Orr was amazing. The Cars would have been nothing without him. Some people are just cool, they don't need to try. He was one of them. One cool mf.
Considering that Ocasek wrote almost all the songs, including the ones Orr sung, and that every musician brought a high level of skill and creativity, I think it's a gross exaggeration to say they'd be nothing without him.
Will Ric was a good singer. My favorite song by The Cars is ‘Tonight She Comes’ which he sings great on. As the songwriter, Ric knew which ones more suited his voice, and which more suited Ben’s voice. I can’t imagine Ric singing ‘Drive’ or ‘Bye Bye Love’. I can’t imagine Ben singing ‘Touch and Go’ or ‘Since You’re Gone’. May they both Rest In Peace.
They all complimented each other so well. Heck I dont think they would have been as successful without any of them. Greg is the one that helped develop their distinctive sound through his keyboards. Imagine them without his syncopated keyboard playing. As far as singing, the fact that both Ben and Ric could sing gave them versatility. When you needed smooth or haunting, it was Ben. When you needed frantic, quirky, or something eclectic, it was Ric.
Ben Orr was the man and always will be I am dj at major casino in pa I will be honoring him The Whole mth of sept his birthday was one day after mine🙏🙏🙏🙏

Benjamin a heady mixture of talent, beauty, handsomeness and cuteness...
Ben is the whole persona of a rock star . This is so freakin hot .
I just love the way he curled his lips and looked at the camera with those dreamy eyes❤️

No theatrics no gimmicks, just awesome musicianship and great sound. Sound as good live, as recorded. Love The Cars

Back when they made music that was worth a shit.
Rest peacefully you talented ❤ guys.. Never to

One of the hippest, coolest songs ever recorded.
I like Ric's vocals too, but it seems most of my favorite Cars songs were sung by Ben.
Same.
Me too!

I didn't know Benjamin Orr sang all my favorite Cars songs until CZcams. I know he's handsome, but what a voice!!
Gorgeous man, gorgeous voice. His talents are missed
I'm # 100.
Yes, his talents are missed. It still amazes me how he could play bass expertly while singing excellently.
Benjamin Orr was such a gorgeous human.
Omg yes he was
Indeed he was!
A perfect male specimen ❤️🔥😜
This is my all time favorite Cars song ! So awesome !

Best song off the Candy-O album. But it wasn't released until 1979. R.I.P. Ben Orr.
This is true but it was written well before that. They performed it several times during their short European tour, which was in November of 1978.
wholly crap they were SO good!!!
I was lucky to see Ben Orr, in concert 1992
Cool. What city? I didn't think Ben was doing (solo) shows until 1995, though.

Mr. Orr rocked it very cool. What a great performer of those times. RocknRoll forever
This song is one of my favorites. Reminds of a girl I knew. Was 18 then. Think I still have all the Cars Albums. Few cassettes around too.

Yes, the only VOICE in the BAND.
Especially if Ric sang! He was horrible! Great songwriter though.
