Keep these 5 legends immortal. Benjamin Orr. 22+ years gone. Way way to young. A legend. Ric unexpectedly. Still all of our youth tied into these 5. Now we're all senior citizens. Life far to short for my liking ......
Elliot Easton didn’t do soaring Clapton-esque solos , The Cars weren’t about that. What he did do was create mini masterpieces the fit into a 3 minute song. Brilliant stuff..
I’ve never heard a more original/ varied / succint composer on a rock guitar
@@matts7975 Ive wondered what if Id somehow been the lead guitarist for the Cars, all the same songs we know but I had to come up with the lead for each one...it is unimaginable. How they found the exact perfect guy to do the exact perfect leads for all their songs should be discussed and written about, it's unreal. None of his leads are just jamming; all carefully constructed and at times intricate but at same time, loose. It's magic.
@@joejones9520 ironically, Magic has been on replay in my head for about two days now. That solo seems so simple, yet it also seems beyond my abilities in terms of artistry, or much anyone elses. I almost feel like he was mocking other guitarists of that era and before. And I don’t mean mock as in simply imitating. I think he’s entertaining as hell to watch too. In the Muskiladen Live show, I notice him doing little things that makes me laugh my ass off.
So true.
David Robinson is a great drummer 👍
Nobody gives enough credit to David Robinson, the drummer. He was awesome too
Phenomenal drummer. Ric was lucky to lure him from DMZ, which seemed to be a pretty solid band for David. But I'm sure he felt he made the right decision in joining The Cars. I was surprised to read that David stopped playing drums after The Cars break-up in 1987. Apparently, after a 24-year hiatus, he had to re-learn the drums for their 2011 reunion. I hope these guys do more stuff. I love their music.
I didn't realize how FAST he was! Not many videos give a real good look at David, but this one does. The recording was good, one can really hear the detail of what he's doing. I think it would be difficult for other greats to reproduce his percussion compositions.
@@lawrencetate145 This is one of the best live performances I've seen of The Cars on TV. I remember seeing them perform on Friday's right after they released "Shake It Up," but the performance wasn't as good as this one. Hell, I didn't even know about this performance until last week.
I give him LOTS of credit! Sexy as ever!!!
I think they are all great musos who probably got better playing with one another.
Ben looks super fantastic in this video. Just wish I could see more of him.
Yes, just look at him standing there playing like a vision in those awesome white shoes!
Can someone please invent a time machine so we can all go back in time to go see these guys?
I’d be the first to board, oh to be young again watching the Cars!
MARC ANTOINE I’m 61, so I was 20 in 1979. Loved the cars back then and still love them now!
I got shotgun! Actually ill take a spot anywhere? Just take me with ya!!
Shotgun!!
That music makes me feel good!!
Greg Hawkes still my all time favorite keyboardist of the '80s.... his sounds and textures pretty much defined the Genre of Synth Pop as its known....and... hes one of the nicest most down to earth people youd ever meet...
Awe, nice comment. I always like it when people appreciate Greg.
I knew these guys personally, worked for and with them for years. My then company, Audio Professionals of Boston, did the technical installation and support for their studio, SynchroSound, was in attendance through "shake It Up" and all of their solo albums. We kept it all running, if it stopped we made it start again and quickly. Somehow, after the smoke (and I do mean smoke, usually Hawaiian. Ric had the best weed in the known universe) cleared, I emerged having been awarded a platinum for "Shake It Up". It's hanging on the wall in front of me now, a reminder of remarkable times.
'Shake it Up' has become my favorite Cars record. Listened to it again today in the car. Well done.
I can imagine Ric as a pothead somehow...lol the weed was good then though today it's shit. Smelly skunk, and messes your head up.
Strange I never even thought about whether or not they smoked. Hard to believe Ric did all that great work while high. Thanks for sharing you story, Michael, and great work!
That.Is.Awesome.
I want to be your friend.
This song shows the talent of Dave Robinson tremendous drummer
It’s interesting the cross pollination that went on at that time. Panorama was very DEVOesk. Course they all knew each other, having the same manager and all.
RIP Ric and Ben. Wishing Elliot, David and Greg well. Thank you, gentlemen, for your awesome music.
RIP Rick and Ben...we all miss you and the Cars!!!
Man, I’m gonna 55 next week and here I am digging this gem, what an incredible band this was! RIP RIC AND BEN ❤
What a great performance. As a drummer, I say David Robinson is criminally underrated. For me, ”Panorama” was a bold experimental album and is one of my top favorites. The Cars liked to play on the Fridays show and put in some top notch performances.
The bass and drums are just crazy 😜 good!!
That's the most animated Ric Ocasek has ever been.
turbittj he must have had a few cups of coffee or some pop rocks.
I saw them on their Heartbeat City tour, and Ric only moved one leg the whole time, besides his hands playing guitar, of course.
@@ReyFlores777 Saw the same tour. Would've been taken aback if Ric & Elliot moved like this. I enjoyed the concert immensely. The tvs, the spotlights, the music, the harmonies, the keyboards, the fans. We had a blast !
He has looooooong legs...!
It’s like the “Bob Hope alter ego” of Ric Ocasek. Lol
They were all fantastic musicians.
WOW!!! They were all firing on all cylinders for this performance, which really showcases Ben's superior bass playing and David's great drumming. Elliot is having a ball and just excellent as usual, and I've NEVER seen film of Ric so animated, ever.
@Just Me 2 - Greg is having fun, too!
Greg cracks me up he's so nerdy but so fun
They were all pretty animated that night. Cocaine is a hell of a drug! 😂
Ben is playing speed bass at the same tempo as Rick! Love it!
I've watched this many times now. A live performance of "Shoo Be Doo" is a treasure indeed! And I've always loved the lyrics to "Gimme Some Slack". I wish "Candy-O" could have fit into the segment as well.
This performance shows off some things that get overlooked:
Ben was a _great_ bassist! Because he sang so well, and was so good-looking, people forget he could also play the hell out of that instrument! Look how busy he is on "Shoo Be Doo"!
David was a total _powerhouse_ drummer. You'd expect him to have bulging biceps. "Gimme Some Slack" looks like a real _workout!_ Can you imagine playing that song on drums, and then going on to play five or ten more songs for a full concert? I'd be exhausted! (Not that I can drum worth a damn anyway.)
Ric was pretty clever with his rhythm guitar parts. He mostly plays simple power chords, but "Slack" varies it up a little bit, although they're all two-note figures. And I admire a songwriter who can stay on one chord (for the chorus) and keep it interesting. As an amateur songwriter, I can't. I feel boring if I don't change chords.
Of course, Greg and Elliot are always majestic with their instruments, but I just felt like pointing out some other things.
I think people think of the Cars as an automated, sequencer-oriented band. Which they partially became with _Heartbeat City,_ using drum machines and synth bass. But for MOST of their career, they were just a tight band that could just PLAY with near-mechanical precision! And that was perfectly appropriate for the music they made, and the era in which they made it! They were both popular and artistic. What more can you want from a band?
Ben Culture: I sincerely doubt I have ever seen a more articulate review. Spot-on, and David was indeed a powerhouse! He certainly worked his backside off here. (DR the human metronome ;)
LowEarthOrbitPilot Thanks for the praise, and I agree with you: They weren't about onstage antics so much as just doing the music justice.
Ben Culture Exactly! couldn't say it any better myself!
You can't much, if any tighter than this here.
Very talented, *all* of them. Well said
I love how this showcases Ben Orr. Man he could play that Bass!
This band was consistently good from beginning to end.
I love watching Ben play bass in gimme some slack. Everything about him makes me shiver.
Lena Lena Oh, YEAH!!!! ;-D
Holy heck yes! Me too..Rutger Hauer with added cool.
@Motoroil SMH You are correct Motoroil
Speed bass...
@Makeupafter50 ❤️🔥
They were the complete package. They were pros in playing their instruments, good singers, original songwriting, cool as ice and as a bonus the handsome Ben Orr.
I found a single on CZcams Ben Orr was on from 1965- I was shocked his recording career went back that far - a band called the grasshoppers
I LOVE this whole thing. Hot music, and Ben ....holy shit! What a gorgeous man. I love him with darker hair.
Love it too! All of it and Ben dark hair and those white shoes....
me too! sultry looks
Rick looked So Happy in their performance, Giving a Smile as they exit the stage as a band! I Loved the Cars.....
First time seeing this performance - it exudes a Kinetic Coolness. These guys had quite the repertoire - a retro vibe married to a new wave sensibility. Blessed to be from Boston...
Fuking awesome! all playing the heck out of their instruments!
Man, they killed it! Ric was on fire on this one. I think that's the most I've ever seen him move on stage.
Benjamin is here so sweet. They all were so great, each one was incredible.
Ric singing,Ben singing,Its all THE CARS to me.....Love it!
And this folks is how you play live music! Fabulous job!!
When you SAW pics of this band, you knew what they’d sound like, and vice-versa. Perfect melding of a sound…and a vision. Just great.
David Robinson killing that hi-hat! RIP Ric and Ben, damn I miss you guys! Thanks for leaving all that great music!
Just unbelievably good. Gracious.
this feels like it was dropped in from an alternate universe
Quite a collection of weird dudes. Nobody can accuse The Cars of trying to imitate anybody else. They are original.
weirdly Awesome!
LETS GET WEIRD 🤪😜😂🤟💥😘
They were definitely drawing from DEVO for Panorama, doesn't make the music any lesser
@@Flaggit devo and roxy for sure
They are all musical geniuses...
Ric doesn't get enough props for the wonderful songs he created, but Ben was simply a rock god and looked like cool.
He had some type of system for writing hit song!!!
Cool, animated performance. Tight and concise performance here. I love it when Shoo Be Doo goes into Candy O on their second album...such a great transition.
that was my favorite point on the 8-track!
It's awesome, but my favourite part is how Double Life transitions into Shoo Be Doo. So unsettling!
gosh do you think Eliott is having fun! he's all over the place, love it!
Elliot always looks like he's having fun. He's really great to watch.
I love his moves!
He's cute!
Sick playing by all, but Greg Hawkes really shines here
I agree they were all in top form. David can sure beat those drums.
Thes two songs, in my opinion, epitomize the Cars just Classic Cars!! They are all so great! And look at Ben in the back in leather and those awesome white shoes. All he has to do is stand there and play and that’s enough for me!
Elliot & Greg look like brothers ! Look @ Elliot rocking out ! David too ! Pretty, pretty, PRE-TTY GOOD
I wish I'd been a twenty something in this era. Man, these bands were freakin fantastic...Benjamin looks so hot here and love how Ric moves too! Bring back music like this! Awesome! 😄😄
Me too...I was like 8 yrs old. So unfair
Agreed I was born in the wrong era musically. I was 5 in 1980. The best live performance imo. I have played these 2 songs like 20 times in a row for a week! Love the punk feel!
I was a 20-something when all this was going on and it was good times unfortunately I'm now a 60-something but that's okay too I got no regrets
I wasn't a big Cars fan but I knew they were really good and had a bunch of great material. I am old and wise now and clearly see The Cars as one the best and most influential band of the 1980s . . . and beyond. This is an incredible performance. Thank you for posting it.
This is one of their most underrated JAMZ!!!! They were Rocking the F*ck OUT!!!!!!
I've never heard this one before, that was pretty cool, I like the pace and the base/drummer were killing it especially
Shoo be doo is on the Candy-O album triple progression........ Double Life/ Shoo be doo/ Candy-O side 1
*bass
Wow, what a TERRIFIC performance of this song by the entire band!! Miss them so...
First life show I’ve seen of them. Oh, how I adore Benjamin Orr and the lyrical suave Ocasek
I really like they are wearing the black and white theme of the Panorama album covers. I know it's just a visual, not musical, aspect, but The Cars were also fashion icons.
To those who dont think Ric moved around much---when I saw em on the Panorama tour he came twisting and turning onto the stage like a whirling dervish. It was really cool--the guys got moves! I think the guitar just had him tied down on most tunes--plus he was singing and had to stay close to the mic. Man I wish I could re-live that concert! I saw em in Chicago and also Detroit on that tour.
Rick was a songwriting machine.
i cannot think of one ' bad ' cars songs, they were that good
These guys were so Good!!!!! and So Young!
Saw them in 1980 at Madison Square Garden when I was still in high school. It was right before Christmas. They sounded amazing. Rare combination of great studio albums and being able to play their songs live.
This was my first introduction to see this band play live, WOW-I thought they were absolutely amazing and I went out the very next day & bought "Panarama" and I've been a diehard fan ever since! I had heard the song "Let's Go" at the skate rink the previous year, and liked it. However this performance made me a true fan-for-life! Rest in peace Ben Orr, glad they finally made it into the RRHOF. Which was definitely WAY over due! I still love'em, still listen to them all of the time. NEVER get sick of their killer tunes!
💜🎶👍🎶🎸🎉
New Wave at its best...!
No doubt... The Cars...
Tremendous live performance....!
the cars were such a special band in rock paving the way for keyboard rock (new wave) RIP(benjamin orr)
Keyboards were big in rock for a long time before the Cars. Hawkes is awesome but not the first.
holy crap that rocked!
These guys are not afraid of changing things up pushing the band beyond the envelope that contains them. They are the greatest!
Saw the cars in boston in the late 70 's at the music hall in boston....candy o was their newest album....loved them then but never imagined how timeless they would be....ide give anything to be at that concert one more time
I've seen the Cars a few times and Ric has never shown more energy than this performance. What a gem to catch Shoo Be Doo as well.
I'm probably one of the biggest Cars fans there is, so much so that I sorta held myself back from exploring other groups. because I believed the Cars could do no wrong. I can still remember like it was yesterday. when I was driving along in my car and "My Best Friends Girl" came on the radio. and I instantly knew this was the group for me. before the song finished I had already turned my car around, and headed for the music store. and bought the first album of course on cassette tape. because I had a AWESOME stereo in my car, and the only way to listen to the Cars was cranked up really loud on a killer stereo. and I went to my best friends house and we listened to the whole tape. and I guess I made him a huge fan of the Cars also. but I will still remember that moment when I heard "My Best Friends Girl". I knew for sure I would be a life long huge Cars fan. and every year when they would release a new album. I would be right at the music store and would snatch it up and every time. I was never disappointed, there are some that might say I'm obsessed with the Cars. and I probably am I considered them to be probably one of the best groups ever. I have every album they ever released, including the solo works by Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr. and even the Anthology. I know every song and all the lyrics down to the letter. if I were to have to pick just one song as my favorite song. it would be very difficult because they had so many great songs. but my ultimate favorite song would be "Dangerous Type". but like I said there were so many great songs I can't leave out "Best Friends Girl", "Let the Good Time's Roll", " Double Life", "Let's Go", "Your All I Got Tonight", "Candy O", "Shake it Up", "Round and Round", "You Might Think", "Drive", and "Magic", and the list goes on and on. the Cars will always rule in my book. there is one thing I have to mention, and that is I have only known of two musicians who had this incredible effect on women. and that would be Marc Bolan with T Rex, and Benjamin Orr with the Cars. a person could say they had it going on. it was definitely sad and a shame when Benjamin Orr and Ric Ocasek left us they are definitely missed.
Watched this when it aired live. Was so confused and amazed that they played Shoo Be Doo. (Loved it of course!)
This is a great video. Awesome songs and seeing Ric and Elliot jamming out together is priceless 🤘🤘
I'm remember hearing this in 1980 o r 1981 on a number of local rock and roll stations and it had a very catchy backbeat but didn't play that long. This is a real under - rated gem.
Watched this the night it aired on tv many many years ago. So happy to find it here.
They should have gone right into Candy-O, just like the album does. That's their best album and Candy-O is my favorite song!
Gimme Some Slack always reminds me a little like The Ramones!!!
Touch and go was the only hit off of Panorama but if you ask me Gimmie Some Slack should have been the hit too. It’s a favorite of mine for the all out fast pace it has and this live performance shows it.
dressshoeguy oh I agree one of my very favorites!
one of my favorites too could of been a hit song.
Give Me Some Slack actually WAS a single. Right after Touch and Go- www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwilpOzj18jyAhXMGs0KHTW-BEsQFnoECAQQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FGimme_Some_Slack&usg=AOvVaw2dZKioHk91vFpSqm42xkvn
nice bass line......thats some speedy pickin'
I still love his bass line on "NIghtspots". He wasn't flashy, but clever and very solid.
Can't imagine growing up, so to speak, without The Cars..... Can't imagine life without The Cars! These guys were AWESOME! Always will be!
The CARS marched to their own Drums. Hard to ignore...who would want to?
Nobody puts Benjamin Orr in the corner....
Right? All the band members are great, but when you've got Ben Orr looking like that it's insane to have Ric bopping around in front of him the whole time.
AGREED...a thousand times!
He's doing his job as a bass player here and respecting Ric... Ric gave him plenty of FaceTime and let him sing a lot of his songs ...
I know. As far as Ric "letting" Benjamin sing his songs, the Cars wouldn't have made it big without Benjamin singing, since Ric couldn't. Ric vocalized. Ric probably became friends with Ben early on to catch the girl extras. I don't care abt Paulina. He was a rich, famous, married guy by then.
They were all cool with sharing the stage.
That's why they were great. Excellent performance by The Cars.
I just can't take my eyes off Ric! Go man, go!
Benjamin was so hot and stylish! Even when he is not the lead singer, all eyes just go to him anyway. Does Ric call that dancing? I love how Ben makes his pouty mouth behind Ric when he know the camera is on him . SO C UTE!!!!!!!!
RIck has said many times that writing just comes to him when the mood hit and he could get several done with no thought of who would sing what. He and Ben would go over the songs and say hey you sing this one and I will try this one. The band would get together and put it all together. There was no problems with any of that.
Until dgp came in the picture.
@@dianegargano175 Yep another Yoko.
It's true musicianship at its best when some nerdy looking Boston guys get together and change music history. All the cars band members were talented musicians.
Drummer is tight af... 🥁🔥😂😂😂
"I wanna float like Euripides, All visions intact.
I'm alright with Fellini fiends. A trippin' over the track"
that is a lyric of fantastic proportions
Brainy, snarky Ric's best couplet.
Wow..."Gimme Some Slack" looks like a lot of work to play! Damn they were TIGHT!
Its hard for me to watch this with a lump in my throat and years in my eyes.
Omg dude me 2!
Please, give us a time machine! We want to go back in thoses golden years!
I love the way Ben played the bass, with a pick instead of those dorks that finger pick with their hand perpendicular to the bass. Nice!!!
lIKE... gEDDY Lee?
Remember buying their first album when it debuted. Tight tight band.
how excellent is shoo be doo
Yessss Excellent!!!
@@julenepegher6999 Ric as you've never--and since--seen him.
rodneyriddnauer I Love Shoo be doo one of my favorites from Ric, RIP, there is a version from Osaka Japan, it’s over five minutes long just Awesome.
Animated, artistic and cool. Very happening music! Energetic. Enough to get anyone who can't swing, to feel like swinging like a monkee in a tree.
Easton's solo at the end of this song is a prime example of his talent as a true musician. It is simple, concise, and perfect for the song as all his solos are also. From what I understand, he was a rhythm and blues guitarist before The Cars picked him up, which makes sense listening to his solos. Only a blues musician could think of such riffs.
cars will remain awsome. all of them were nice looking. Ben- THOSE EYES!- Ric-thoses legs go on forever. aw the music, every song they do is wonderful! Thanks for the video. love it!!!! :-)
Are you kidding abt all of them being "nice-looking"?! Ric was a horror. Only David was attractive at all other than Benjamin.
These five fit together perfectly for those 10 years.
Back when comedy was good and music was even better.
the blonde at 4:53 looks stunned! Awesome performance!
She also looks a lot like actress Alice Eve! Haha!
Yes
ESPETACULAR!!!
This is the first time I have heard these 2 songs. These are the most upbeat songs I have heard or seen them perform. I think The Cars musicianship really stands out on these 2 songs. Ben Orr was great on bass. Ric was tremendous on lead guitar. Greg and Elliot are the 2 whose skills I think you usually notice the most. But on this song I think it apparent that David Robinson takes a backseat to nobody as a drummer. Put thiese song on my save file. R.I.P. Ric and Ben.
Was Ric on lead guitar? He usually played rhythm guitar and Elliot was lead guitar.
Even though El and Ric are up there jumping around like they've got worms, my eyes are still drawn to Benjamin in his tight leather pants and white boots!! Damn!! He was one HOT babe! He is also doing his classic "pouts" to the camera whenever it starts to focus on Ric and yeah Ben still steals the show.
Kandee -O You're so right. And I love Ben's expression at 00:41.
Ben has the original duck face!!
@@julielambert6764 you are correct ! But his pout was natural, never forced .
Benjamin was the male Deborah Harry.
Yep, all he has to do is stand there and play and I Love those white shoes something about them gets me goin
Just amazing. Thank you!
yeah, 2 daring picks (almost obscure songs) to perform successively live, but they make it work. like ben said, "this is a treasure indeed"...for cars' fans anyway.
Makes me want to yell Move over so I can see Ben
Yeah! LOL
@@sheylishka. Hey Ric go to the back to your side of the stage . We want to see Benjamin!
Jijijiiji
ELLIOT!!!!!!!
I'm fucking going nuts here. Shoo be doo live? And first ever hearing gimme some slack. Yes it was strange not hearing the intro to candy-o start immediately but what a surprise!!!
Murphy - Come on now! Because you haven't heard Gimme Some Slack I have to mess with you just a little. There are A LOT of great tunes from all The Cars albums that never got air time that DESERVE ATTENTION if you want to claim to be a Cars fan. But wait! There's more!!! There were a couple of greatest hits albums that had other tunes not on the first four albums, and a double CD Anthology that has even more awesome and obscure music.Ric went on to do....oh at least 4 solo albums that all have great music where he explored music outside the vein of The Cars highway. Incredible. Not to mention each of the guys did at least one each solo album (except Robinson)....I just know you have them all like I do!!!!
They opened their shows in 1980 (Panorama Tour) with Shoo-be-Doo. They played GSS on this tour, but not many, if any, others. I saw them every tour and only heard both these songs in 1980.
The Cars were so ahead of their time...amazing talent
Great energy on this set!
These guys are hammering!! Love this band.....1977 to 2022
