    0:00 - Introduction
1:48 - Lesson 1: People often don’t get what they deserve.
2:58 - Lesson 2: Don’t listen to people who try to explain misfortunes.
4:26 - Lesson 3: The meaning of pain comes from what you do with it.
When Harold Kushner’s three-year-old son was diagnosed with a degenerative disease that meant the boy would only live until his early teens, he was faced with one of life’s most difficult questions: Why, God?
Years later, Rabbi Kushner wrote this straightforward, elegant contemplation of the doubts and fears that arise when tragedy strikes. Kushner shares his wisdom as a rabbi, a parent, a reader, and a human being. Often imitated but never superseded, When Bad Things Happen to Good People is a classic that offers clear thinking and consolation in times of sorrow.

People don't realize how seriously God takes free will. You can do whatever you want but not as long as you want it. That's the whole key.

It's definitely karma/aka everything happened for a reason. Problem is people don't understand the meaning of these true expressions.
Karma: is not an individuals balance sheet. Karma is the law of cause and effect. Everything has a cause and everything has an effect in an endless web of phenomenon. This explains all phenomenon. Some portion of phenomenon has a moral component. Immorality is a cause which tends to have bad effects. What trips people up is the expectation of an individual balance sheet based on divine justice. But we all know from personal experience that our Immoral actions have a negative effect on others. We also know that those others may respond with more Immorality not always directed back at us. Perhaps they take it out on their spouse. Their spouse may be a good person, none the less a bad thing happened to them caused in part by the negative karma you created. They now have a moral choice, they can pay the cruelty back, they can pay the cruelty forward or they can purify the Karma by following Jesus's way of loving their enemy.

He is a Rabbi but doesn’t believe that God can save people? Such logic reduces God to an impotent, weak being who’s “powerless” (pp. 42-44). Although, it is a very thought-provoking book on suffering, it’s conclusion on the attributes of God does not reflect Jewish thought.

I tried reading this book because my uncle sent me a copy but it was loaded with awful theology that did not accurately reflect the character of God. The author seemed to make some interesting and thought provoking observations but then went way off the rails with most of his conclusions.
