  • Host Rich Fahle interviews Harold Kushner about his new book, “Nine Essential Things I’ve Learned About Life” at the 2015 Miami Book Fair.
    FROM THE PUBLISHER:
From the beloved author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People, deeply moving and illuminating reflections on what it means to live a good life.
As a congregational rabbi for half a century and the best-selling author of twelve books on faith, ethics, and how to apply the timeless wisdom of religious thought to everyday challenges, Rabbi Harold S. Kushner has demonstrated time and again his understanding of the human spirit. In this compassionate new work, his most personal since When Bad Things Happen to Good People, Kushner relates how his time as a twenty-first-century rabbi has shaped his senses of religion and morality. He elicits nine essential lessons from the sum of his teaching, study, and experience, offering a lifetime’s worth of spiritual food for thought, pragmatic advice, inspiration for a more fulfilling life, and strength for trying times.
With fresh, vital insight into belief (“there is no commandment in Judaism to believe in God”), conscience (the Garden of Eden story as you’ve never heard it), and mercy (forgiveness is “a favor you do yourself, not an undeserved gesture to the person who hurt you”), grounded in Kushner's brilliant readings of Scripture, history, and popular culture, Nine Essential Things I’ve Learned About Life is compulsory reading from one of modern Judaism’s foremost sages.
Distilling the wisdom of an extraordinary career, this profoundly inspiring yet practical guide to well-being is truly the capstone to Kushner’s luminous oeuvre.

I'll take all the Kushner wisdom I can get! I am a non-religious but spiritual, 70 year old guy, and I am convinced that this guy has the answers to most of life's important issues. One of the highlights of my life was talking with him 1:1 at a reception for an event a number of years ago - we talked for about 10-15 minutes - LOL, much of the time, I was tongue-tied, but it was still such a rewarding experience.

R.I.P. Rabbi Kushner, 4-28-2023. I knew him from my friends who went to Temple Israel in Natick, MA. A great person and easy to talk to when I was just a child.

Rabbi is a very smart person and I am immensely grateful for his books, I dare to say however, that the crimes that we make to 56billion animals a year are tragic and in our cruelty we show we are different to them indeed but unfortunately the comparison is not in our favour.

I like much of what Harold Kushner writes in his book, but when he says god doesn't personally know who you are, to me this is a devastating statement ! When he talks of a hereafter his ideas are of a vague exsitance that quite frankly doesn't make me feel hopeful ! His idea of a God fashioned in his image of a God is great if you are healthy young and have a college degree. As the late Dr Robert Schuller use to say false hope is better than no hope ! I do believe in his belief of a God that doesn't intervene, but ultimately Jesus seems to offer more hope !

I left the following out, I know Rabbi Harold Kushner doesn't believe in a place called hell, and since his idea of a God that will not ultimately judge each person, then besides the personal pain they endured in life, Hitler and Himmler walks off Scott free ? I think that's B.S. as the farmers use to say in our community ! Even us as humans if someone breaks the law he has to go to jail or pay a price for what he did ! Why should we expect less from God ?

A strange and sad fact about Progeria. More than one individual who has had the syndrome, including Rabbi Kushner’s son, have died either on the day or the day after their birthdays. Most notably American actor, Mickey Hayes who died on his 20th birthday and South African Painter and DJ artist, Leon Botha who died the day after his 25th birthday. Progeria is a sad and painful disease, both for the patients with the disorder and their loved ones, especially the parents, no parent should outlive their child. I would not wish this disease on anybody.

Correction: Leon Botha died a day after his 26th birthday. He was one of the oldest people living with Progeria at the time. He died on June.5.2011, RIP Legend.
