hi, i just want to say that grief is not a linear thing. he has done so much for so many communities, and although he is no longer with us, his impact will outlive him and lives in so many others currently.
edit: the first bit is my own view on grief. it is different for everyone. that's just what i wish someone could've said to me in the early stages of my own grief.

ahh, well "grief" and "mourning" and "memory" are very different things, while I embrace your sentiment, the word choice is a little iffy. You should just let the second statement stand alone, because, as someone grieving, the first statement hit me wrong.
I met Dr. Farmer while I was in college. I have since gone on to make public health my profession. Paul Farmer did amazing work and we all benefit from improving the lives of the most vulnerable among us.
This is a loss that I cannot quite wrap my brain around. This doesn’t seem real. Reading Paul Farmer’s work in college is what made me decide to apply to graduate school and become an epidemiologist. There are few people who deserve to be idolized for who they are and the work they did in the way I hope he is remembered. He was a gift to this whole planet.
I came here to say exactly this! I'm currently in graduate school studying epidemiology in no small part thanks to Paul Farmer, and Hank and John who introduced me to his work.
Do you mind if I ask which book out of his many works you read in college? After reading your comment I'm genuinely curious and would add to my book reading list.
@@VesperAegis of course! The first book I read of his I was assigned to read, called “AIDS and Accusation”. After that I read Tracy Kidder’s book “Mountains Beyond Mountains” which is a biography about Dr. Farmer. And my favorite book of his was actually “In the Company of the Poor” by Dr. Farmer and Father Gustavo Gutierrez. As someone who was struggling with their continued existence in the evangelical church, this work helped me unpack how to navigate my strongly held values in the context of my passion for public health. There are many others but those were my touchstones!
I have just taken what is an unusual choice for most medical graduates in my country, that is, do my specialisation in public health, so this video and the book recommendations couldn't have come at a better time! ❤️

When I shared with my family that Paul Farmer had died, my dad asked if he was one of my inspirations. I said "I want to be him when I grow up". His vision on healthcare is what I try to bring to uni and the hospital every day. Dr. Farmer has inspired a generation of current and future healthcare professionals, myself included. This news is devastating, but I trust that his work will be carried through, because he understood the importance of collaboration and partnership. I'm so sorry for your loss, John, wishing you all the best!

Bending the Arc is amazing. One time I was supposed to have a lecture on healthcare systems, and our professor just sent us an email telling us to watch Bending the Arc instead, cause he couldn't teach us anything that documentary couldn't. Highly recommend!

Dr. Farmer is one of the rare people who you know left the world better than it was when he came into it and did so much to make it so. His legacy will live on in the hospitals and clinics he established, in the students he taught all around the world, in the healthcare systems he helped build, in the people he inspired and mentored. He will continue to make the world better every day for a very very very long time even though he is no longer in it. There is no better, more meaningful, or more selfless legacy that any of us can hope to leave behind. He was taken from us far too soon, but the things he did and left behind never, ever will be.
A man that changed millions of lives and profound ways through healthcare and advocacy. I will never be able to explain how he even changed my own. John I’m sorry for your loss.
I am so sorry to hear this news, but I am strangely comforted to know that our community has an opportunity to honor his memory with the P4A this weekend.

The Man Who Would Cure The World…
I first learned of Dr. Farmer way back in 2006, as a junior AP English student in high school and have only grown to admire him and his work more over the years. The influence he had and all he set in motion will continue to change the lives of so many. I am heartbroken to hear of his early passing.
He made the world a better place, something that we all must strive to do. Rest in Peace, Doctor Farmer. You made every moment matter.
I am so, so sorry for your loss and for the world's loss. Dr. Farmer was such a profoundly good man, and he will be deeply missed.

"I don't really know what to say, so I think I'm just going to tell you a story." Every time you do this, John, you break my heart in the best way possible. Thank you for the stories.
I saw this news and it struck me. My dad passed away last month, aged 63. Dr Farmer did a great deal with his life, made an immeasurable difference to the world and changed so many lives. My dad retired last year and spent his days reading zombie novels and drinking scotch. But it doesn't matter what you do with your years. My dad had a generous heart, an immense capacity for love, and he touched the lives of everyone he met. If I make half the impact that either of these men did in as many years, then I will have lived a good life.
RIP Dr. Paul Farmer he will be dearly missed, let us continue his legacy!

He was a great man, and I’m grateful to you and Hank for introducing Nerdfighteria to such an important cause. I have to believe it’s a large part of the reason I ended up finding a purpose in and working in public health.

First of all, sorry to hear of your loss John. I immediately thought of you, Hank, and Nerdfighteria upon learning of his death. But his life's work and his ability to inspire others overshadows his untimely demise. He set in motion work that inspires others to give of themselves more than one can go, alone. I know this, if only for the news impressions here in New England.

Like, at absolute bare minimum, everyone eats and sleeps on a schedule. Like??? What? Humans have been keeping time in one way or another since before we knew what we were doing. Like. What?
At first I was shocked that someone would’ve said something this ignorant publicly as little as 20 years ago…. But I’m sure there are plenty of people who still think this way today. :(
Yeah, I saw a story once about an African man who taught himself how to read English so that he could read mechanic books, and used what he learned to build his village a wind turbine to generate electricity. I'm willing to believe there are places in this world where literacy and ability to read a clock aren't common skills, but I'm not willing to believe people can't learn how to read a clock to save their own lives.
I'm also not willing to believe we can't design a cheap, durable wrist watch with multiple alarms that blink colored, shaped lights when it's time to take different medicines. "When the red square light blinks, eat the red square pill."

His loss is felt so immensely. I'm sorry to his family and everyone who knew him personally. Everyone who his worked touched will feel this loss but it's comforting to know that his legacy will continue and that the values and ideals that he taught will continue.

I'm so incredibly grateful for this community. Thank you everyone here for your empathy. I find myself crying, not just at Dr Farmers passing and the compassion woven into his life work, but also because I'm not alone in morning and celebrating this man I'm so many degrees away from. This whole network of disjointed people is here because of empathy and compassion for our fellow humans and it's one of the more beautiful things I get to be a part of, too. I was in Haiti almost exactly 10 years ago this week and the way Paul wrote about the people there in his book Mountains Beyond Mountains is beautiful. RIP Dr. Farmer.

I’m deeply saddened by the news… I found out when my computer software professor shared the post and Dr. Paul was the reason why I was inspired to apply for a job at PIH more than anything. I don’t believe in soul or god but for what I can tell I hope he is at rest and we can continue to do good work at bettering people’s lives.

6 years ago, together with other great people I met on the field, I created a charity that works in refugee camps in Greece. It changed my life. That Paul Farmer sentence "What keeps me going is getting to do hard work with friends" made me cry. It is the smallest but most powerful rarely spoken truth about doing what we do.
I never ever comment on youtube. I don't know why, it's a sort of mental health rule I have given myself, and I apply it even in an oasis of goodness like nerdfighteria - have been following Hank and John since, well, I don't know when. But this message, that sentence, was worth breaking the rule.
I’m so saddened by this loss but so grateful for the legacy that Dr. Farmer leaves behind and the work that he has done to build a future where impoverished countries have quality, self sustaining health care systems.
I think that scientific brilliance is also associated with interpersonal harshness or valuing scientific ideas over people. What I found most admirable about Dr. Farmer is how much his actions proved that this does not have to be (and should) not be true. People are more than figures and probable outcomes.
I can only hope that his work will help inspire more kind, good, brilliant people to do all they can to make the world a healthier, happier, and better place-just as he strove to do.

When the world says "No we can't" It really means "We don't know how"
Partners in Health; for me at least, stands towards a bigger meaning. It's a track record of showing the world exactly how to start working together to solve issues that seem almost to big for individual action.
This video brought tears to my eyes. Once again John you bring clarity and remind us that the PIH's project in Sierra Leone can, will and already has started paving the way for the future generations of Global minded individuals to assist in ensuring humans (no matter where they are) have equal opportunities.

I want to say when I heard the news I did not recognize the name, but i recognized Partners in Health. This is an organization that I would not know if not for this community. I had just looked something up on the PIH website for something for P4A a few hours before the news showed up on my news feed.

This is a heartbreaking loss, but I'm so comforted that because of the inherent nature of Dr. Farmer's mission with PIH, the work he started and encouraged WILL continue for decades to come. By making community and partnership central to his life's work, he (rightfully) ensured that his death does not mean the end of this mission, because it was never about him and his individual abilities and influence. His inherent belief in and insistence on the humanity of others is his legacy. Our world is so much better because he was in it.
I am watching this video six weeks after you posted it and I am sobbing about the loss of a man I only knew through your stories. I am in a Master's in Public Health program, and I have been struggling with motivation. I watched this while taking a break from a homework assignment. Dr. Farmer was an example of why this work is so important and the impact it can have. The health of the public - EACH OF US - matters to ALL of us. I am making a goal to read about Dr. Farmer's work as a part of my public health education and to remember that while this is hard work, it is good work. Now I will go back to my homework in hopes that one day I too will be doing hard work with friends.

Words always feel somewhat inadequate in situations such as this. I am sorry for your loss and the loss to the world. This man fought relentlessly for people who had very little ability to fight for themselves. I cannot think of anything more telling than that quote "What keeps me going, is getting to do hard work with friends."

My condolences John - death of a friend or loved one is never easy. I'm sorry you lost your hero, but he will live on in the hero that you and Hank are to all of us.
The terrible anecdote about clocks and watches was quoted almost word for word in an episode of the West Wing, and not having watched it as it aired, I didn't have the context that it was a real thing said by USAID. It always rubbed me the wrong way and I thought the writers must have been overtly prejudiced or naive.
Having lived in the global south for a few years gave me a tiny window into the lives of people who are no different from me but have wildly different opportunities and expected life outcomes. It sounds like Paul Farmer never lost sight of how inherently unfair our societies are, and knew that the arc of justice has to have force behind it to bend.

I came across Dr. Farmer's work during my master's and he inspired so much of my research and my thinking. I cannot believe he is gone.

I took a class on global health delivery taught by Paul Farmer last semester. It's my first year in college, but that class was one of the most eye-opening experiences I've had and really inspired me to pursue public health and global health equity, && I was delighted to make the connection to John and Hank of course :) I consider myself so lucky to have engaged with Dr. Farmer's work and comforted to know that he leaves a legacy of great people determined to continue it. Thank you both for being among them.
Whilst I never had the pleasure of meeting Dr Farmer there are some losses whose impact ripples so broadly across the world that it feels like the "collective soul" of humanity - if such a thing exists - is grieving them. Dr Farmer's choice to do the work he did and his continuing to choose it in the face of opposition and adversity is beyond admirable and the monumental achievements of the partnerships he helped to create will give the gift of life to millions of people for years to come.
Truly one of the best of us, a beacon of compassion and hope that will continue to shine for many times longer than any human lifetime.

Am I correct in remembering that John used to work for a time as an Obituary Writer... because this was an expertly crafted memorial for someone so clearly loved and admired. I had long thought of John and Hank to be great people with a good sense of values, and I am glad, that even at least after their time is up, that I get to know of the heroes that inspired them. I met Dr Paul Farmer in 2019 after years of reading his book “Mountains beyond mountains” he was so humble and funny and he has inspired me and even gave me tips on my pursuit of public health grad school. Truly devastated and feel like I lost a personal hero and the world lost a true humanitarian. RIP Dr Farmer.

I never met Dr. Farmer, but would have loved the opportunity; I am in awe at everything he managed to accomplish in such a short time, and he's such an inspiration for me to do better and do more. He's an inspiration. Reading in the news yesterday that he died was so unexpected and has been very hard to deal with. Hey John. I was hoping you'd do a video like this. Just wanted to let you know that I am a freshman in college and for an anthropology seminar last semester we read Mountains Beyond Mountains and talked about Paul Farmer and his work, and it is inspiring the next generation of people who want to make the world a more just, safe, healthy place. Sending hugs.
You only need a clock to tell time when you don't have sufficient access to the sun. I am glad that people had somebody who wasn't afraid of the differences between first world and third world to advocate for their competencies and their worthiness for care. It is easy to be dismissive of a 'problem' or a people when you are ignorant. I'm thankful for people like you, and Dr. Farmer who won't let those around them stay ignorant. I am thankful he gave you tools to make a difference, and I am thankful you share those tools with us.
In a recent session of DnD our party was on a ship sailing across the ocean when we came across a colony of ants, floating along in a massive raft on the surface, holding onto each other for buoyancy as they drifted into the great unknown. This wasn't anything special in the game, it was a simple scene to break up the monotony of the voyage, and even in our world ants commonly do this to cross bodies of water.
But those ants have been sitting rent free in my, and my characters, mind for a few days now. The fact that they have no idea what lies beyond the horizon, which way the ocean would take them, if they'll survive or sink. It's such a stark representation for any group of people, large or small, who come together not because they have an ultimate goal, or because they think they can achieve something for themselves. But simply because each other is all they have, and clinging as tight as they can to the rest, to make sure everyone has a chance to breath is the only way they'll make it wherever they're going.
It's the people like Dr. Farmer, and like you, John, who are so important to this world because you remind us all that the humans are truly all that humanity has, that we must hold on tightly to everyone we can and trust that wherever the chaos and unknown take us, if we have each other we have the best chance of finding what lies beyond.
Thank you, to Dr. Farmer, to vlogbrothers, to everyone who reads this and everyone who doesn't, we can't do anything without you and I'm so grateful to be a part of this pale blue raft floating in the dark with you.
