Val Kilmer explains how he came to create the persona of Doc Holliday

  • Val Kilmer discusses how he came to form Doc Holliday's dialect and mannerisms for Tombstone at the 2012 Ohio Comic Con in Columbus, Ohio.
He briefly describes what it was like to act alongside some up and coming actors, as well as tenured stars.
I have placed a collection of scenes from the movie depicting what i feel are the strongest examples of Val Kilmer's portrayal of Doc Holliday and his overall acting genius.

Not only that, he draws and spins while still holding his drink cup upright, like he'd done it a thousand times before and that's likely because Val practiced by doing just that. In Real Genius he rolls quarters down the knuckles of both of his hands at the same time. And that was for one scene in a silly 80s nerd comedy. He's always been a truly dedicated master of his craft, it's so tragic that he lost his voice.

And it hits on multiple levels. I mean, yes, Doc knows he's in complete control of the situation, and his words (and their delivery) convey that...but he also knows he's facing a long, slow, wasting death and he isn't the least bit afraid of someone giving him a quicker, cleaner departure from life. He's a man who literally has no fear of losing, because even if he loses, he still gains a more worthy death than he was looking at if he didn't do anything.
And an enemy who has no fear of dying is a truly intimidating thing to face.

This is the crowning achievement of any actor. Not how many roles you play, not how many Oscars or Golden Globes you may win, but that your performance of one character was so amazing, so iconic, that all the fans and movie goers remember it and laud it for generations to come. Almost 30 years later and people are still talking about Val's performance. That pretty much puts him in with Marlon Brando and the impact he made with his performance in 'The Godfather'.

@John-lp5xh In this context it means something like: I'm not a guy you want to f**k with, you mess with me, you end up dead. In a more friendly context it means: I'm your guy. You can party with and trust me. Ask me, I'm your huckleberry. Just say when.

It is southern slang for "hucklebearer" which are now called "pallbearers"...huckle being what a casket was called back then...So he is basically saying I will carry your dead body

How that performance didn't win an Oscar is an astounding mystery. It was because of that character and Johnny Ringo that I put that movie into my top three westerns ever made. His portrayal was top notch work.

Ok. Name your top 3. Mine would be Tombstone, Unforgiven and one of Clints earlier movies. Perhaps Josie Wales. Scratch that.... Josie Wales is great, but I absolutely love Open Range. So... those would be my top 4. And Open Range would be number 3 and Wales being #4. Only because I grew up with the newer ones.

Most actors are clearly recognizable in the characters they play, but even though the logical part of me understands that Val Kilmer played Doc, I still can't really make my brain accept that. They're just so different. Absolutely legendary performance from the dude :)

This version of "Tombstone" continues to be a favorite for me. One of few best made, and the cast was fantastic in character. Movies made about actual people, have always been a interest but, the actors that involve themselves enough to research the character they're to portray, makes it all the more special. Thanks for a trip back into history.
