Kurt is the fucking man. I recommend any of the Carpenter/Russell DVD commentaries for some really good insight into not only the films, but John Carpenter and Kurt Russell as people.

I have always heard that after Kevin Jarre was fired that it was Kurt Russell who ran the set and Cosmatos was nothing more than a figurehead who everyone pretty much ignored. On the nights before shooting, Russell and Kilmer would get together and set the script and the shooting schedule for the next day. No matter how it played out, one of my favorite movies EVER. Biehn was a big part of that.
Cosmatos was a figurehead on Rambo as well. Sly directed that film.

Kurt Russell said in an interview that he only got a few hours of sleep every night during production cuz he had to plan what to shoot the next day and he got Cosmatos on the recommendation of Sly Stallone who worked with Cosmatos on Rambo 2 and Cobra.

Unfortunately you only attain that level of honesty in the business (or any business for that matter) once you have either made enough money to not really need the job any more, or risen to a level of respect where you won't get fired for voicing your opinion.
Try it as a young upcoming actor in the business and you'll soon find yourself blacklisted from every production you audition for....
He was blind drunk for the entire film and everyone on set knew it. He was a nightmare to work with. I did like Johnny Ringo and Kyle Reese, though. Biehn is a jerk.
The more I hear from Michael Biehn, the more respect I have for him. He seems like a down to earth guy.

Johnny Ringo waw awesome. His facial acting when he realizes that "I was only joking" won't work before the last duel with Val Kilmer and he goes "from come on man" to "alright F it, I'll get you" within 3 seocnds is awesome
I think Ringo legit respected Doc Holiday
Ringo had a soul and a conscience. I felt really bad for him during his final scene, but wow, what a performance.

There's a long going on with his face when he says that line. He's trying to act cocky and intimidate Doc Holliday, but you can see behind his eyes that he's terrified 'cause he knows Doc is a better gun-fighter than him.
I believe the line is actually "Well I was just messin about." To which Val/Doc smiles and says "Well I wasn't...and this time... it's legal!". Sorry I guess I had to be that guy.

Thing about Michael Biehn is that he never tried to wave his arms and get the audience's attention, it was the performance itself that got the audience's attention. Reese fit in, Hicks fit in, Johnny Ringo fit in. He doesn't distract from the setting or the other actors. I think if the Jason Bourne movies had been made in the 80s, Biehn would have been a good pick.

His son, Caelan, was a podcast producer for Adam Carolla and does a weekly podcast with the other staff members of that show called "The Water Cooler". He is a really funny but humble guy and has some great stories about his dad.
Michael Biehn is an absolute gem. My son and met him at a local ComiCon. We were late arriving and he was leaving for the night. He gave my son a free autograph. It means more than you know.

Gotta love an interviewer that cuts his subject off mid sentence repeatedly, even while they are answering a specific question he just asked 4 seconds prior. Really great technique there.

I will say that I really enjoyed two of the Tombstone cast.
Dana Delaney - I worked a lot on the TV show China Beach and she was the best! No matter how long the day was or what time at night - a joy to be around. The hours were ungodly but the pay checks made up for it.
Powers Booth - spent the summer with him on the movie Blue Sky. He would join us almost every night at the Selma Holiday Inn bar. First night he came on location, walks into the bar (try to imagine that big, deep voice of his) - “Alriiiight! Movie trash!” 3 words and he was one of the gang after that. Great guy!
That showdown between Ringo and Doc was the fight the audience waited the whole movie to see and both actors delivered one of the best gun fights ever seen with a audience pleasing death

The circling camera movement on that scene was dizzying it just amps up the tension and then utterly pays off with Doc quick draw.

What never got mentioned by the media. Is on the set in Old Tucson it was Val Kilmer who first interacted with students that were there for field trip. Kurt Russell was right after him then the rest of the cast followed.
The scenes with Val & Michael are a tutorial, not in acting, but, in creating.

I wish Tombstone had been 4 hours long. There was enough material there to do that and still keep it interesting. Biehn's character Ringo deserved more screen time and a look into his backstory. Same for just about every character. We may never see another film with a cast that good again. It's just a shame we got the "condensed version" instead of something closer to the sprawling epic it should have been.
Not unhappy with the movie we did get though.

Yes, there is a Directors Cut somewhere! I personally knew the Confederate soldier who played Tucker at the beginning of "Looks Like a Suicide." He had a turkey feather in his hat. He passed away... he had a copy of it. Sadly, forever lost 😪
You are 100% right. If they wanted to re cut it, add in the lost footage, and re-release as a special edition, it would be an all-time blockbuster hit.
Wyatt Earp definitely benefited from the longer runtime.
The Latin scene between Doc and Johnny is one of the coolest tough guy flex scenes ever filmed.
Twirling the cup the same way Ringo twirled his gun was impressive.

My favorite was finding out that Val Kilmer learned how to play the piano for the other scene.
Biehn's great. His story about coming into Aliens last minute without doing any of the weeks-long training with the other actors, and bascially saying "Fuck it, that doesn't mean anything" is priceless. He knew he could do that job, because he knew he was good. Period.

I really think an absolute freaking RECUT of "Tombstone" would basically turn out to become "Red Dead Redemption - the Movie". Also, i ALWAYS get happy when i see Michael Biehn. No matter where. He freaking ROCKS!!!
Yes, if someone found the footage that he is talking about here, recut the whole thing and release it in the theaters, people would still buy tickets. The movie has a huge fan base

Technically some of Kevin's footage made it into the movie but only B camera footage of say horses riding in the distance. I was the daily syncher for the brief run under Kevin working at Synergy Studios in Santa Monica while everyone was in Arizona. It was a nightmare. I'd wait all morning until around noon 10,000 ft of dailies came in and they wanted everything synced and coded by 3PM. It was physically impossible. Understand that in shooting film, picture and sound are separate and they were running three simultaneous cameras with full 400ft mags and "syncing" at the tail of the take. I don't know who the AC's were but the slates were all hitting outside the frame as they clamored out of the camera trucks at the end of the take as everyone slated over each other. Normally there would be a distinct break between the slate. "A camera MARK then slate...B camera MARK then slate." Nope. None of that. It was an incoherent mess. A trick we use in those cases is then syncing to an actor saying a word than began with a B or a P so we could line their lips to the sound, or a door shutting or something like that, but at that stage it was mostly...just horses. In the distance. I was losing sleep over this. Dialog scenes played out normally and I could get the job done, but it was obvious that it wasn't working. Kevin's direction was very...staid. Standard master shot, over the shoulder and close up. I heard the grumblings during dailies. And then when they fired him, we all got fired. That's standard procedure. I was actually relieved.
In the end I was disappointed because it was such a masterful film and wished I had been on crew for the second round. I was surprised from the video that Cosmatos was such a dick and that he wasn't entirely in charge. How a masterpiece is made under those conditions I can't imagine. But it is a testimony to Kevin Jarre's incredible script and the power of these powerful actors...and whatever forces made it happen.
A seriously underrated actor. He wasn't even nominated for The Abyss, I mean come one!

Right? This just reminds me to watch the Abyss again thank you. His character becoming more unhinged was fantastic. He really put the thrill into this movie.
Kevin Jarre was a history buff. He was greatly influenced by David Lean so that gives the idea of scale and epic he saw things at. He and Biehn were friends from before Tombstone, so Michael's not being direct about why he deplored Cosmatos and won't give Kurt credit. Jarre's version would have been much closer to Deadwood than what we know as Tombstone. Jarre died in 2011. There are scenes, like Heston, that are his. The vast majority of what we love about Tombstone was Kurt. It was his passion project
Unfortunately, movie business is relentless and can chew you up. Kevin was a good writer, but by all standards, terrible director. If they could get somebody else in the directing chair, but didn't.

The story does not line up with real history either, since Behan did arrest the Earps and they had to go to trial and defend themselves after the gun battle
I mean people want to give Kurt credit because they like him, but that doesn´t mean he did everything. Like the ending duel between Kilmer and Biehn, they figured it out between the two of them. Is Biehn supposed to lie and say "yeah yeah Kurt totally directed us in that scene and came up with it".
Just look Michael Biehn up and the movies he's been in and by the 5th or 6th movie oldest to newest you're going to be thinking "whoa". Ever since Terminator which I was only 4 years old when it came out I've been a massive fan of Michael Biehn he's an outstanding actor I've got mad respect for him.
To this day Aliens is still one of my favorite movie and Im still bummed they cut out Hicks for the sequel.
He told Fincher to go f**k himself over that aswell. His career took a big hit because they killed him offscreen in the 3rd movie, and as we all know, so did the entire series.

Audible did a series of audiobooks where he survived. A case of mistaken identity. In a video game, he had survived as well. I think those are canon.

@@robgreive3657 he was supposed to reprise his role in the next Alien but they ended up killing him off. If you do some searching online there is some information that he would be inappropriate with the girls working on set and would show up drunk. Maybe that’s why. 🤷🏻♀️
I met Michael Biehn in 2019 at AwesomeCon in Washington, DC and he’s hands down one of my favorite actors that I ever met. He very a humble honest wonderful man and I also met his wife Jennifer. We talked about his films and when he mentioned about Tombstone, he did say that the director and Billy Bob Thornton were assholes on the set. 😂
Michael Biehn such a great actor, enjoy all the characters that he has played SAME with Powers Booth, Sam Elliot. Val Kilmer sensational actor. Kurt Russell is a legend. I am 67 yes old grew up watching The great Kurt Russell

Michael is such a great guy ...real down to earth humble as you get! A cult legend that has more iconic roles under his belt than most of the so called A-lister's today! Tombstone is a modern classic western and it's also a brilliant film. All-star cast, great acting, great script! It and "Unforgiven" are my favs! Would like to see Michael in some more sci-fi independent films...

I'd forgotten about Powers Boothe. I loved The Emerald Forest. Biehn was good in everything I've seen, especially The Abyss.

He was also amazing as the villain in the 2008 remake of Turok

Well, I'll always remember Powers Boothe as the voice of Gorilla Grodd from Justice League/Unlimited of the DC Animated Universe and I typically hear his voice if I ever read a DC comic that features Grodd.

The cast in Tombstone is extraordinary! Based on Mr. Biehn's commentary, it must have been the cast that made this movie a classic.
There wasn't a weak member in the cast. Stephen Lang hardly gets mentioned... guy's incredible. Dana Delaney...Billy Bob, Harry Carey (are you kidding!), Rookery, Heston!!
Given how much of a nightmare filming this movie sounded like shows how great of a cast they had because Tombstone is an all time great film and I really am not a western fan, but given the troubles shows how great the cast maybe even the lower rung crew was.

I never watched Smallville, so I really did not know much about Michael Rosenbaum before stumbling upon his podcast. He has definitely found his niche.

Man, it's hard to believe now that at the time they thought this movie was going nowhere - now of course it's considered a modern cinematic masterpiece

I've been collecting stories from the set of Tombstone for years. It's a fascinatingly troubled production, especially considering how watchable the final product is.
Well said. I never knew of its production history. I knew Cosmatos was a hired gun of sorts, but not the rest of this.
@@refinedsugar - I didn't know about any of it until years later. I just knew that I watched it a million times and loved it as a kid. Later on I read reviews that referenced that the studio delayed its release because it was such a rough production and they had no confidence in it. Then the response was pretty good, and then I think even better when it hit video.. and I think generally people liked it better than Wyatt Earp with Kevin Costner that was released around the same time.
Michael Beihn sums up a lot of the general issues here pretty well, but there are loads of stories from different perspectives. Kurt Russell says that he basically directed it after Jarre was fired, which he didn't want, but he could see coming once the studio execs started poking around on set and reviewing dailies.
Anyway, there's not a lot of info out there, but it seems that every year or so somebody else talks about this production and another little tidbit is explained. Those stories are out there and google-able if you're interested.
I knew John Corbet played a cowboy. He said the “Wyatt Earp” production bought out all the extra western uniforms and such so they could film and get Kevin Costner film out first.

Every movie Michael is in, you can tell he builds his character off of the other actors instead of just developing it to stand out. It's very unselfish. It's the relationship between Doc and Johnny that really sets both off

How did this disaster turn into one of my favorite films of all time? Goodness?! And scene after scene in this movie is fantastic. The bit at the end Biehn and Kilmer came up was off the charts. One of, if not the best standoff in a Western, ever.

I saw a screening of The Terminator in Sydney last year and Michael was part of it, talking and answering questions beforehand. He’s one of the coolest and most interesting actors I’ve seen in person and I wished that the Q&A went for an hour or two longer. Great stuff and stories here, thank you for interviewing him!

Biehn is telling no lies! I never heard a good word about the director at all!!! This movie was EPIC and it was because of the cast and crew and NOT that director! The pieces that went missing that helped the STORY were later restored in the uncut version of the movie! The story made so much more sense!
what, George P. Cosmatos, the guy who gave us the cinematic masterpiece that is Leviathan (1989)??? say it ain't so!!
Not one interview of Cosmatos on YT is also a sure sign of a great storyteller 🤔
Interestingly, he replaced Kevin Jarre as director on Tombstone. But, previously directed First Blood part II which was also written by Jarre in 1985

And despite all that, "Tombstone" is one of the greatest westerns ever. Any time it's on TV, no matter where you tune into it, its automatically a remote drop.
One of those special films that have that quality. Godfather 1, 2, Goodfellas, Casino are that way for me.

Not a big western fan either, not only is Tombstone my favorite western, it's one of my all time favorites of any genre. Kilmer absolutely killed it but the rest of the cast were superb as well.

I think that George character is the same guy who "directed" COBRA. Actually, I saw a video that said Stallone directed most of that movie.

So wait...Val Kilmer said it was Kurt who directed the movie ultimately. What is Michael saying here? Also I have seen Kurt in an interview say he has more footage he wants to release once certain other events transpire.

I think when you look at people like Val and Kurt it's easy for them to say (and easy to see it as;) "Kurt took control. He directed it." Which was probably true for Kurts scenes, but for someone like Michael, they might have seen it from the side of the "enemy gang" with experienced people like himself. Powers Booth as everyone coming together and just trusting that they're all professionals to get the scenes done. I can easily see how he would go "We all just did the job. We didn't NEED a director." Where as someone like Val, if asked "Who directed it?" would just go "Kurt." Because they're not going to see it as 'nobody did the job' they're just going to think of who the big personalty was on set when their scenes were being shot, and that would have been Kurt.
@Indore, the common story is that Cos was a terrible director and the movie was sinking, so Kurt took over not so much as director but as the QB of a football team so to speak and used his Hollywood knowledge to keep everyone playing.
- By 'other events' do you mean the death of Cosmatos? Because he passed away in recent years, ans that's when Kurt Russell said that he had directed the movie because they had a deal that he wouldn't say that publicly while Cosmatos was still alive.
Either way, I'd like to see the extra footage. It's a shame that Jarre is not around to explain his side of things.

Michael Biehn comes across as the kind of guy who would be extremely cool to sit around a campfire shooting the breeze with. Great storyteller and I have no doubt his head is filled to the brim with great stuff.
