I can honestly say that Anthony Michael Hall is a genuinely nice guy. The only actor in 10 years to shake my hand and thank me for working on his show The Dead Zone.
Loved that show-rewatched it recently.
Glad AMH finally came to terms with his wonderful past and not so angry about it.

I wrote John Hughes a fan letter around 1989 or '90. A week or two later, I received a package from him. He sent me 3 t shirts (Home Alone, Uncle Buck, and Hughes Entertainment), 2 painters caps (one Uncle Buck and one Hughes Entertainment) and 3 buttons like kids would put on denim jackets around that time. There was a typed letter on Hughes Entertainment stationary that said something like, "Thanks for the kind letter. I hope you enjoy the enclosed." It wasn't signed. Ultra cool. I still have the letter.

@@BMFstudiosNYC I've thought about that possibility. I didnt mail it to the studio. I mailed it to Hughes Entertainment based out of the Chicago suburbs. Even if, he himself, didnt package it and a secretary did it, it was still a nice gesture. I can't believe Hughes Entertainment would have had a huge staff. Maybe him and an admin? I'm sure every kid that sent a fan letter didnt get 3 t shirts, two hats, and three buttons from him. Maybe he didnt do anything more than tell his admin to mail those things to me. I still treasure it.

That is the coolest thing ever! I loved the 1983 red Porsche 944 from 16 Candles so much, I found one and restored it back to its original glory.

He doesn't get mentioned much for the original VACATION movie, but he held is own in that movie as well. Delivered some really funny scenes.
The scene where the Griswold's were stranded in the desert and Rusty guzzles a beer he was supposed to share with Clark comes to mind.

Holy shit let the guest speak. This is what happens when people who aren't broadcasters think they need to host podcasts and have shows.
yeah, that was embarrassing.... only 10 seconds in and he´s already interrupted him twice.
It was so blatant and ill-timed that I thought it was a comedy bit at first. The host is a bit full of himself, didnt learn basic conversation etiquette (especially as a host on a podcast) and tries to bully his speaking over top of others. He didnt even pause .like a normal civil person would, but just powered through his interrupting by talking louder. Kudos to AMH for allowing him to be rude and being patient.
Most hosts have huge egos and they think the show is about them.

@@avidadolares I've watched several of Michael Rosenbaum podcasts and while I'll admit he does fire off questions in succession on occasion, is not full of himself in the least, more open and likes to create a 'bud's house' environment. Very self-depreciating about himself too.
J. Hughes was a frickin' genius. Took 20 years for me to realize it. He made ICONIC films.

He delivered his lines Brilliantly in 16 Candles and Weird Science… the scene in the blues bar… his comedic timing was impeccable.

The 80s teen movies were some of the best I’ve ever seen. They weren’t just silly tropes …. They were vastly different but all had the same kind of innocent feeling to it.
Thats how it felt to be a kid in the 80's... I feel sorry for kids today . they have no idea how free and exciting life was back then.. It was a sweet spot time, we had enough technology to make lives better but not dominate our lives like today.
They had so much heart. I love how the last frame of The Breakfast Club was like a wish from John Hughes - like he was saying we don't have to be what other people decided we were in high school.
No one knew teens better than Hughes. He knew the teenage mindset better than anyone else
He was definitely the best actor in the whole group. All of his characters were completely different from each other. Plus he could switch between comedy and drama so effortlessly. He held his own as a straight-man up against Chevy Chase. AMH was a natural at such a young age.

John Hughes movies are pure magic, and Anthony is a great comedian.
I'm very happy Anthony Michael Hall seems like such a mature adult. I'm always worried about these child actors but he seems to have turned out just fine.
He avoided typecasting, thanks to the likes of _Edward Scissorhands_ and even _NYPD Blue_ where he played a rural New York lowlife

Had the opportunity to meet Anthony Michael Hall at an autograph show, he was super nice and a complete gentleman.
So he was a normal person, who hasn’t let fame go to their head. So disappointing when a Celeb has the attitude of being better then everyone. I would love to run into one of those celebs, just to knock them out, wait for them to regain consciousness and remind them that they are a normal person!

Jonas Beach yeah, I hit that a little bit when I met actor Michael Madsen, he didn’t really have a better than you attitude, but an attitude like he was to good to be there.

Honestly couldn't imagine Anthony Michael Hall as the lead Ferris Bueller (possibly Cameron Frye?) Anthony always had that adorable dorkiness about him back in the 80s, Matthew Broderick however had that cheeky look to play an entitled cocky teenager that honestly had a bit of a face on him you'd just wanna slap. All that being said I love, LOVE Ferris Bueller's Day Off and it's final casting choices!
I was with you at first totally... Then I started to play it through my mind some... Jeez, it would have been really different, but I think Anthony could have pulled it off pretty impressively! I can really see him doing the 4th wall breaking scenes and totally hooking the audience in. Matthew Broderick IS Ferris... but I think Anthony Michael Hall would have pulled it off well!

@@mirozen_ Yeah, I love the idea of AMH playing Ferris. Probably would have played him younger, so slightly more obnoxious, and thus his sister's intense dislike might have made more sense. AMH also brought more warmth to his characters than Broderick, the latter's characters smirked more than laughed out loud, and seemed uncommonly (for a teen) self possessed.
@@UR_Right24 Downey Jr. for sure, I believe he, like Broderick could pull off the entitled brat personality so well (I mean, it worked so well for him playing Tony Stark!). Another definite contender would've been Jon Cryer, who I thought had quite the resemblance to Matthew Broderick...
Ferris buehler had 95 percent perfect casting..ferris' girlfriend always seemed odd, too old looking, too mature
@@pootthatbak2578I am surprised you thought so, actress Mia Sara was actually the youngest of the three main cast members (17 at the time) Matthew was 24 I think, but Alan Ruck as Cameron Frye has been sighted for looking too old to play a teenager (he was 28-29 at the time)

I met Anthony Michael Hall at the Seattle International Film Festival in 1999. He was incredibly friendly and gracious. We chatted about our ties to Cape Cod. I wish him well!
Anthony Michael Hall was such a huge part of my childhood. I'm a little bit older, but those Hughes movies he made were so great and he was the perfect actor for those roles. Hughes and Hall were a great duo!

My favorite scene was the one in the breakfast club where he explains why he is in Saturday Detention ending with the flare gun going off in his locker with everyone laughing until HE finally relents and laughs. It was the look on Judd Nelson's face when he finally breaks and then the laugh at the end to kind of break the tension of the scene.
It’s weird how he looks entirely different and speaks the same way he used to in the 80s.
Great Actor man and definitely one of the best child actors.
As an 80's fanatic, this was really cool to see. Anthony Michael Hall was such a genuinely funny actor, and was really good at such a young age. The bar scene in Weird Science sticks out in my mind and of course his emotional moment in The Breakfast Club when everyone is sharing why they're in detention. Dude could always act his ass off! I love this podcast. Having an actor/showbiz vet talk to other actors brings a level of detail and depth you don't get much elsewhere.
In the first 20 seconds, the guy has asked him two questions and not let him answer either of them. Does the interviewer ever let his guests talk?

As a kid I loved "Weird Science"! I must've watched it a hundred times on VHS.
This guy is a hero to me in that he conquered alcoholism and likely still killing it. He was great and had a career resurrection during the 90s with his series. Good to see he's still looking good and living right.
The scene where the tough guys take Cusak and the other kid out of the trunk is one of those little things that are really funny, as Derrick scoots over so the tough can lift him out of the trunk. It's like it wasn't the first time he'd been taken somewhere in a trunk. Completely unfazed by it.
That is such a natural moment. I went to "that" high school, meaning it was like one of his movies come to life. It was just the time. But, so many things like that happened that watching those films is like a yearbook.
People like John Hughes are the ones that make work and life more enjoyable. Even CEO's and owners of large companies that listen to their employees and allow them to speak their minds or do their own thing creates magic. The best job I ever had is a great example. My boss gave me the freedom to build relationships with co workers and it resulted in awards and recognition. We were #1 in our company in results and it's because this guy had the genius to see the talent of his employees and give them a long enough leash to do their own thing
Weird Science is without a doubt my second favorite 80s comedy, the first being Better Off Dead with AMH's buddy Cusack , haha. Both are just the greatest of the decade. Later I loved The Dead Zone, which still holds up today, and honestly I think was way better than the movie with Walken back in the day.

Ya, crazy that Cusack refused to sign any memorabilia/posters of "Better off Dead" till few years ago...He claimed bc he was embarrassed & hated that movie. Cusack even refused to answer any interview questions about Better off Dead during tv/radio shows. It was even a stipulation (aka.. a "question not to ask him during interviews") his publicist would make before shows. Cusack, himself, admitted, info this few years ago. Crazy bc EVERYONE loves that movie!!!

AMH seems extremely grateful and humble, after a lifetime in film. I remember being shocked when he went from the "Hughes" era of his career to being a jacked-up bad guy....so great that he was able to make the transformation into full bore adult actor...so many go by the wayside.
I thought the same… I would never have realized that was him. But then I suppose if I looked in the mirror I might wonder the same about myself!!
AMH is so good in his movies, his facial expressions are the best, Johnny Be Good is a hilarious movie, glad to see he's still around, not very many actors I'd care to meet but he is one I'd like to meet

My only issues with the movies from John Hughes was the very glaring lack of diversity in pretty much all of them( and no, I'm not counting Long Duk Dong from Sixteen Candles because he was basically a racial stereotype and a buffoon, sorry but he was- he was basically treated as a joke throughout the entire movie).
BUT having said that, I do think that John Hughes was like Woody Allen, David Lynch and Martin Scorsese in that he wrote about what he knew- and that can't really be held against him.

@@liquidmagma I've had people give me this response as a counterargument before about the lack of diversity in the John Hughes movies but to that, I would say that Spike Lee, Tyler Perry and Jordan Peele aren't right to not have diversity in their films, either.
They're all wrong to do it that way, as well. Someone's artistic vision is their artistic vision, mind you but I still think that they're ALL wrong.
To this day my friends and I watch Weird Science and are in awe of how he nailed that shit and was so young. Literally one of the funniest movies ever.

I spoke with Anthony at a recent NM film festival and he had fond things to say about John. It sounds like the relationship ended the way it did with Molly Ringwald when she turned down a project he had his heart set on for her.
Wow, Anthony Michael Hall was and is great. Funny how things work out though. Tom Selleck was Spielberg and Lucas first choice for Indiana Jones but he was bound to Magnum PI and couldn’t do it. I can’t imagine Ferris Bueller without Matthew Broderick at this point.

Got to meet AMH at days of the dead horror convention and he was a blast, enthusiastic about fan’s questions and genuine, got to ask him about Working with Bill Paxton on weird science and he said it had been a long time ago but had fond memories of working with him and it made me smile!

I love that I've never heard of a John Hughes controversy. He made the movies that defined a lot of Gen X and we all remember him with a great deal of love. We were not a generation that paid attention to things like who the director was but we all loved his movies just the same.

John Cryer ROCKED IT as Duckie. I love (love) Anthony … but I can not see him as Duckie. The same goes for Ferris Bueller. - Actually, I think I can see him as Ferris, but Mathew gave it his all. (And it paid off for him in a major way.)

When you say you cant see him as Duckie or Ferris it's only because you are so used to the other actors portrayal......If he had done it from day one you might now be saying I couldn't see Mather Broderick playing that role....
John Hughes movies were a mirror to my high school life, seemed like my classmates and now i can look back and remember how it was and how i felt in 9-10th grade. Glad Anthony Micheal Hall had such a carer and rebirth. it was a long time before I knew it was him in the dead Zone

I watched the Dead Zone show strictly because I knew Anthony was going to be in it. He is just one of those actors that when he's in it, you know it's gonna be good. Everything from Family Vacation to Halloween Kills, if he's in it you can bet it'll be good.
He was so believable in John Hughes' movies. Sixteen Candles was so funny and so sad and Michael Anthony Hall was so good, so vulnerable.
Some directors treat actors as nothing more than instruments for executing their vision, but it sounds like Hughes thought of them as collaborators going by the assumption that they understood more about actually being a teenager in the 80s than he did.
I think he was right, and it really came through on screen.
I was a teenager then and The Breakfast Club was the first movie about teenagers of my generation that wasn't cheap exploitation and didn't talk down to me.
Even the way they dressed was on point.
I had a pair of those gloves Bender wears a year before that movie even came out.
My step bro, my step sis and I graduated HS in 86, 87 and 88 respectively, and we watched breakfast club a hundred times at least (my step sis the most, she crushed big time on Judd Nelson). That movie DEFINITELY captured being a kid in the 80s

He is one of my favorites. So many great characters in movies and shows. I met him at a signing and he was great to fans and gave some small talk. I have heard this about him consistently too. I also love that 16 Candles movie so much; I finally found a 1983 red 944 and restored it too its former glory. Love the car and movie! 🎥

On another note, I was genuinely freaked out when I saw him in Edward Scissor Hands after his other films cuz he was so bulked up. It was weird, but you know - people grow. a lot! :D

I worked an event space in NYC with his stepdad. AMH is such a "regular guy" I couldn't believe he was that little kid from the Hughes movies. He is also a really big dude and loves to eat which is kind of unusual in that crowd. Glad to see him doing so well.
John Cusack should still be sending him Christmas cards.

Watching this in 2023 and being born in the 70’s and a child of the 80’s, I feel so old now! The 80’s were the best and John Hughes was the 80’s! And the younger generations will never know a simpler time like this, way before cell phones and gaming on the internet. I love Anthony Michael Hall!
Turning 45 this year and I think more than any other actor whose movies I’ve thoroughly enjoyed, this is the one dude that I can’t see as an adult. Something in my brain just can’t square it away. It’s odd….I can only see this dude as the kid from Breakfast Club. This can’t be the same kid. Not possible 🤣
Anthony Michael Hall in Sixteen Candles is one of the best performances of all time. I could (and have) watched that movie more times than I can count and it never gets old.

Anthony Michael Hall was by far the best thing about 16 Candles. I thought so when I saw it in the theater when I was 16, and still think so. So hilarious.
