  • The backpain was worse than I thought. I was trying to work through the pain and heal my back and the only way to do that was to continue the build. We also take Crew to the vet because we're concerned for his well being.

    Sorry to hear about Crew. Our wonderful 85 Lb. dog (13 years old) had a tumor on her side. We had it removed and found it to be a Mast Cell tumor. This type of cancer is very common on large dogs and is fatal. Removing it didn't do any good because it just came back. Since she was in pain and was starting to have problems with her back legs, we decided the best thing for her was to put her to sleep. This was a tough decision, and one that stayed with us for a long time, but it was best for her. You have our sympathy.

    • @josesaldanha2683
      @josesaldanha2683 Před 10 měsíci +5

      Even though removing didn't cure it, you can sleep in peace knowing you've tried. One of the most heartbreaking feeling of pacients and families is regret. You tried and it didn't work. It was his moment to join our Lord. But if they don't do it now with Crew and the worst happen, well they will never stop think what would happen if they did. That moment before you fall sleep, when you find a toy. If is possible you better do it, if the time don't allow it for some reason, maybe money or other things, well, then there's nothing to do. Some times a complete remove may be enough to cure, some times is the other way around and the procedure is worse then the disease, but the feelings when you do everything you can is much more tolerable.

    I recommend one surgery and then hope for the best!

    This is not a diagnosis but as an MRI tech, normally pain while sitting comes from pressure in the front of the spinal chord (anteriorly). Pain while standing is associated with a posterior disc bulge or herniation. Also, muscle strain can cause swelling which can put pressure on the spinal chord. It looks like Jim used pretty good body mechanics so hopefully rest will take care of things.

    I recommend the biopsy. My dog and I lived and worked out of my truck in the Los Padres in California for more than 6 years. He had a growth that eventually got to 6lbs. After surgery at 12 years old, he lived another 3years happy and healthy. It was only after a bad vet visit were the vet hurt him in a routine check, that he went downhill. Get to it sooner rather than later.
    Take care of yourself.

    An large older dog can give you 10 to thirteen years for the most part… surgery can run you $600.00 to More than $1,000.00 if you think you can overcome that expense do it,
    if not do all you can to keep him out of pain then let him go if you can’t watch him suffer…. So sorry….it’s part of the cycle,
    he has loved and you have loved that’s what counts!🥰

    Howdy Jess and Jim. I get back problems when I over work. My doctor prescribed Diclofenac Sodium Topical. It really does wonders. It’s a gel you rub on the affected area and you wake up a new person.
    To prevent another episode with your wheelbarrow, I would place a blocking mechanism to prevent the wheelbarrow tire to go over the edge. A shallow ditch or a short 2x4 upright with stakes to hold it upright on its side. Anything to stop the tire where you want it to stop. You can then tip the wheelbarrow over. This is just an idea.
    I feel for you all and Crew. Nobody knows what he is going through. We have a very old dog and she needed some minor surgery. They have to draw blood and check to see if her liver and other organs are in good health prior to any surgery. We have to make sure she is strong enough to go through the anesthesia and recovery. That’s a hard decision. Blessings to you all and Crew. Be safe and hope you feel better, Jim.

    Hi Jim & Jess. Our primary care doc is a D.O., and does OMT Manipulations. We may hurt 1 place and she can feel where the source of the pain is. She works muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones. If there's a D.O. in S.V. or nearby, I'd highly recommend the OMT. Your vet sounds like a good one... conservative treatment 1st, more if necessary. All the best to our Self Reliant crew (including Crew).

    The same thing happened to our Pearl. The vet also tried antibiotics, and they did not work. It was discovered that what was causing it was cancer spotted inside her mouth. Eventually, the infection would fill into her lungs making it very difficult for her to breathe. She was always clearing out her lungs. It's difficult to talk about. I hope this is not the case for Crew.

  • @lmelior
    @lmelior Před 10 měsíci +3

    I'd definitely recommend a visit to a physical therapist. I wrenched my back throwing shotput in 11th grade, and it was messed up on and off for almost a year. It was kind of how you describe: fine sometimes, but certain movements were like a lightning bolt to my nervous system. In the bad times, I couldn't even stand up straight. When I finally went to the PT, he said my primary issue was an imbalance between the strength and flexibility of my quads and the hamstrings, and no amount of back stretches, muscle relaxers, or chiropractic visits (all of which I was doing by that time) were going to do anything long term. I was finally back to normal by my senior year track season and I competed at the state championship in discus.
    About 6 months ago, my daughter was having knee pain from soccer, to the point that I had to carry her off the field at the end of the game in tears. I took her to a physical therapist, and the prescription was a set of exercises for strengthening her hamstrings and various lower leg muscles as well as a set of stretches for her hips, ankles, and feet. For example, one of my daughter's stretches is to spread her toes out as far as possible and hold for ten seconds. After just a few weeks, she had stopped wearing her knee brace and didn't even tape up her knees for games.
    I'm not gonna try to diagnose you over the internet, but I wouldn't be surprised if you were also told to strengthen and stretch muscles that you wouldn't think of as a remedy for back pain. Either way I hope you are coming out of it for good. You said it perfectly at the end: a big part of being self-reliant is taking care of your body (and mind)!

    Yes, I have been watching closely at your working ethics. I thought some time down the road you would be hurt, so please slow down, take it easy, get more helpers, and don't try to do it all by yourself. It doesn't hurt to ask for help, you're still self-reliant in the long run. Peace and healing to you for your back or wherever it hurts. I'm so sorry! Take it easy. Will be watching for improvements.

I hate to say, with Chew not being all that mobile, It won't add much time ta Chew's life, if ya get the surgery. Ive lived through 4 dogs. One died because of the cancer. We did get the surgery because he was only 7 years old. Sadly we ended up having to put him down 6 months later because the cancer grew back and out of the area where the doc's had opened him up to remove it. he was in so much pain. Still miss him, well all of them.

    I hope you straighten up your back sooner than later. one thing I did as a landscaper for 30 years was to make sure my back was in line. Lifting heavy things (using those wheel barrels with one wheel did not help) but I went to a chiropractor, I got massages whenever I could afford it and made sure I was sleeping on a very good bed. I am also at this point in my life learning to stretch every single day. those muscles turned into knots, that's what hurts, and then it starts pulling your bones out of whack. And when you can invest in a very small bucket loader and a hot tub.

    I have had a German shepherd that had these fatty cyst on him. We went with the surgery and that was the end of it. They healed up really fast and were hardly noticeable In just a couple weeks. My recommendation is to have it removed. We opted to not do the biopsy because he was already 14 years old. He lived a long happy life.

    Take care of your back. Try working at more ergonomic heights (small tables, work horses+top), milk crates+top). Reduce the weight in the totes or barrow, especially when wet. Hoping Cru gets well.

    What do you plan to use to waterproof the outside of your home? Tiny shiny home ended up using a stucco mix and then a waterproof paint of some sort. They went through much trial and error to come to this. They live in same climate as you. You both work so hard. Wishing you both the best.

  • @foamformbeats

    I've had back issues for over a decade and one thing that has helped me a lot is going on regular walks and sleeping on a foam mattress (on the stiff side-- not too thick).
    One piece of advice I would give is to lift more using your legs. I noticed when you were setting the bucket down, for example, you were bending your back over a lot rather than bending your legs. Little things like that might make a big difference.
    Also make sure to stay sufficiently hydrated because the discs in your back need water to move nutrients into them and to keep their form. They are made of a lot more water than the bone vertebrae.

    Why leap to surgery? A non-invasive biopsy will give you the information you need. If it's benign it's one thing; if it's cancer then the vet needs to give you a thorough understanding of what is possible and what is likely. This is so hard and Crew is so lovely. God bless.

    Back injuries are really no fun. I dislocated the sacro-illiac joint behind my right hip. I could barely straighten up, much less walk until it popped back in. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried. The relief was incredible. Keeping my fingers crossed for Crew. I had to put down my dog in 2012, after he was hit in the head with a brick by some horrible teenagers. He was a miniature Jack Russell, just 18months old and 20centimetres long, including tail. I don't understand what goes through people's minds when they do something like that. I will pray for Crew, if you're open to that?

    Been there done all that . We had two dogs a Tibetan terrier and a Cairn terrier. The Tibetan started being unwell turned out to be Leukaemia and within 4 weeks he was gone . My other half was heartbroken as she had him from being 8 weeks old . Within a couple of months the Cairn started to slow down drastically . She had colitis and back problems at 16 yrs old so I had that decision that you never think you are going to have to make . So within 3 months we lost both of them ,it’s horrible being without them , I have had dogs all my life and find the house empty without them .

    An inversion table may help you in ways that will surprise you. I have one and using it helps place my hips & back in alignment. Some times I also use a bunting / solid exercise roll in areas along my back & hips while both on and off the inversion table. It was uncomfortable at first. It will be a healing exercise you build up tolerance for. It took about a week overall for me to tolerate being on it for more than 5 minutes. Now, I enjoy being on it for over an hour at a time, more for maintenance than correction. I will say that a ‘cheap’ table will not likely last or provide the healing relief you need/seek. Mine is “ Fitness Gear “. Currently, online prices range from $130.00 (used) to $250.00 (new).😊😊
