As someone starting from zero this November, I would be interested in the first 10 steps to moving off grid. Love you guys. Have a great day!
Did you buy land yet?
@@arizonaunplugged8885 yes, I have 10 acres in west Texas
Great suggestion!
Make sure you check the county, city, state codes on where you would like to live. What you can and can't do before even buying land. Soil testing, Shelter, water, electric, septic codes. Research research! Power stations, generator.
Determine a budget first. I would love 10 acres on the lake. I have 10 acres of desert. Research. You need food, water and shelter. If any one of those is going to be extremely difficult in a location, it is a less then ideal location. The local zoning and laws, sorry cannot have solar without a permit. Cannot collect rain water. Cannot drill your own well. Will the ground easily grow food. It would be interesting to see a 10 step list however. Like I made the mistake of starting with the defenses and ended up with the seeds for farming. I justify this to myself as I need to defend my seeds 🙂
Hi Jim and Jess
Our neighborhood is a haven for Great Owls.
They prefer open top nests. They like to land right near or on the nest. They have more distant communications with their babies, encouraging them to fly. Consider much larger opening, 2 feet wide.- Dino
I thought of you often when the hurricane was hitting California and Nevada. I'm glad it was only beneficial for you out there. I'm excited to see the root cellar progress you've got going, Jess has it all down to a science now and makes quick work of it. Jim you put your back into everything you do so be careful of pushing too hard. Maybe you 2 lovebirds need a hot tub out there under the stars to soak away those tired muscles.
I like this channel best. This is how real people get their projects done. One step of at a time. ❤
I just want to say that things that are self-evident to you may not be clear to a newbie. What a great idea to share your experiences. I really look forward to it. Thank you.
Glad your back is better Jim. Mine gave me issues for about a week a while back.
Unfortunately the back was still hurting until only recently. It was great seeing you again Don.
No question Jim! Hope to see you and Jess again, sooner the better@@ourselfreliantlife
There’s absolutely nothing not back breaking with what you’re doing! Hahahaha! I really enjoy watching your progress! Keep living the dream.
I started with a five year plan for getting out of debt and acquiring skills: homemade cleaning (hair, skin, teeth, home), food production/harvesting, building, community building, protection, then saved up and purchased land, vehicle, and building materials. I love that you're teaching people. I'd love to offer my services in order to help you proofread before publishing. ❤
That is awesome!
What a great rain you got you both are doing such great work I am praying for you both always
I would love to take your course. I've been watching your channel for about two years now. I've just acquired land in Southern Colorado and have been educating myself on the permaculture practices of not only you fine folks but also a few others. You guys have been a wonderful inspiration and educational source. Your dome rocks
We have watched you from the beginning and we are rooting for y'all! Wish we could come help you but we've got our hands full with taking care of our farm. It gets harder as you get older, take care of yourselves.
The little garden is looking so nice Jess! It's a really beautiful structure. I remember when it was gifted to you all these years back. Great to see how you transformed it. Such a happy place 😊
Oh thank you!
Fingers crossed for Crew-Man! Glad you missed the nastiness that the hurricane might have brought to y'all and good to see you pacing yourselves as much as possible to avoid major damage to your "frame". Thanks for this episode---and keep on looking out for each other (fur friends included)
Thank you!
Slowly you are heading for the finish line. Proud of you.
Hoping for the best for Mr Crew. Great video as always
Your irrigation system is SWEET Jess.....
Thank you!
Have you tried doing stretches before you work? That will really help your back. Also, a few ab crunches a day strethens your core, and oddly helps with back issues. My other suggestion, is a hot epsom salt bath at night, to add some extra magnesium to your body, which helps with staying hydrated, and muscle cramps/spasms... looking good guys! Love your vids! 😍
Thanks for the tip!
That rain was fantastic!! So happy for you. We have had 1/4-1/2 inch in mid August Nothing else since the first week of May (north of youse guys). Local tribes did a rain dance early August. Wish they’d keep it up! We sure need it. Jim, take care of your back!!!! I got a pack rat- send that doggo here for a spell wouldya? Every time you post I get motivated and work on my own stuff. Thanks for that
That is awesome!
Prayers for Crew❤
I think the idea of a course would be great. Especially if it covers chunks that are broke. Into small pieces. I have continued to follow you guys because it is realistic. You give me inspiration to keep plugging along even if I can only do a little at a time.
I'm gonna argue against a lumbar/lower back support belt. They don't really offer much support, but they do make you *think* you have extra support so you may not be as careful as you should be. The PTs and OTs I worked with always recommended physical therapy to get your back and core muscles stronger, and specifically said not to use back braces. Excited to hear more about the course you're putting together!
I agree more stretching. Working for me 💪 Belts not good for people with problems already
Thanks Kim! I don't believe in the braces either. I'm going to definitely going to start a workout regimen.
You might get a brace for your back Jim.
I would like to see the details about how you did your gravity fed irrigation system in your garden 😀
Omg, that rain is a savage but all your hard work is coming into awesome fruition!!!!!
I would love to see a class offered to make a small cob structure, maybe like a pizza oven or something. I think you should charge something for your classes, your time, and experience is worth alot!🙂
So glad you all are safe
Good afternoon hope you guys are having a great day keep up the good work and just be safe watching for the water hope you get that thing fixed soon as possible all right God bless you guys
you guys are looking good there being self reliant. fit, healthy and happy. especially jess, you throw those bags around pretty good. jim, take it easy on your back. can't afford to be laid up for too long out there. stretch and use your legs more. good luck with the course. it'll be nice to have an organized outline of the important priorities for self sufficient living. food, water, shelter and energy with a focus on the DIY aspects whenever possible and practical.
I AM DEFINITELY INTERESTED IN YOUR CORSE. I AM 59, AND JUST FIXING TO HEAD TO MY PROPERTY TO START MY HOMESTEAD, I AM INTERESTED IN EVERY ASPECT OF THIS. I LOVE WHAT THE TWO OF YOU JAVE DONE THUS FAR, AND LOOK FORWARD TO EACH NEW VIDEO. YOU MAKE THE CORAE, I WILL BE THERE, lol
You need a back brace for heavy lifting and a lot of bending. My brothers wear them. It supports your spine and back muscles and prevents injury from unexpected stress or movements ! Great progress both of you !
It so sweet to see how much you love Jess. Jess just gets red faced. I don't think she likes PDA. JIM is very fortunate. Love you videos
Saying prayers 🙏 for you guys, i hope the ground slirps it up quickly, and you can finish the root cellar before many more rains...... love you guys and what you do🙏🇺🇲👍💯🌹
I think that you guys have done a great job of showing how you get water, which could be really challenging in a desert environment; however, it would be useful to get more insights on your plans for obtaining food in a self-reliant way.
For sure getting water in the desert is an issue. In az. They get 10 times the water as the ca. desert . I could never live on rain water here in commifornia. But plan on moving where there is water . Oregon
We agree!
Many moons ago (I'm 72 now), a good friend in England told me about various herbs that act as a repelent to vermin. He told me that they were not poisonous, but the aroma from these plant was sufficient to keep rats and mice at bay. Regrettably I have forgotten the names of the plants, but if the remaining part of my memory is correct, there were three different plants. If you know anything about this I believe it would be interesting to those who are setting up in a more wooded area, where there is an over abundance of rats and mice. Just a thught. Best of luck and stay safe. - John
First, you can plant herbs around your garden, sort of like a protective wall to repel rodents. Herbs that have the strongest smells such as mint (especially peppermint), catnip, rosemary, sage, lavender, oregano, and basil are the most effective plants at keeping these unwelcome creatures away.
EXCELLENT PIC OF DOME WITH CLOUDS !! I'd even buy a copy of that shot !!
Good morning Jim and Jess
Let Crew out
Let Crew out...
Awesome innovative approaches. Love to see the progress! Have y’all considered an owl live cam. That would be cool
❤ I was wondering how this monsoon and hurricane would affect your buildings. Praying the shape was a blessed decision and the parched desert would use the extra rain. Love to hear and watch your stories unfold❤❤
I'm with you on those owl screeches, they are terrifying. One night I went to the back of my property and an owl screeched super loud, I was shocked, it was such a primitive sound.
Jess Harmony Garden Dome. Praying for only for the best results for Crew. May God put his healing hands on all of you and may he protect you all. Sending prayers, hugs and love ❤❤❤❤
Please, take it easy on your back. Like you said, it needs movement, just not too much. And both of you sometimes overwork yourselves because somehow you seem to feel guilty to stay put when needed.
I hope the visit to the vet helps.
Yes, every bit of rain helps.
The cellar sure is coming along fine.
Jess is a Genius!
💯😁
The Jessie Dome 😊
So enjoying watching you two on what you are creating 💥 Jess the owl box is going to be a great home for a lucky bird. Will more than one owl nest there? And give Crew a big hug and kiss on the nose for me 💜 hopefully he will be OK 😊 Jim you take care and don’t fight with the equipment, it can be replaced, your back can’t 😵💫 Hug UV for me too!!!!! 🌺🩵💙
🐾🐾 😎 - Texas
Have you ever seen Rainbows? Must be beautiful out there, nothing to block your sky. Big open sky. 🌈⚡⛈️💖💐
Awesome 💯💯. As for Jess's garden. Call it Jess's spirit of love. 😊😊😊😊. Lots of love and hugs to you all 😊😊
So glad u can rebuild and didn't lose it all. I just a week ago lost everything in the East Adams Lake fire in BC Canada.
So sorry that happened! Our prayers go out to you
Love it keep it up as always 💘
Here in West Mobile, the most rain of any county in the lower 48, we've been sprinkled on exactly twice since the last few days of last month. And it's been over 100 for the last week or more. The straws are falling off the pine trees, and it's not even Fall!
Thank you for the storm video the day and nite so cool , and update on the tropical storm , love the owl box continue , the name garden spere of that nature , classes do 1 a month on different things ur doing at that month while ur doing that project , hope Crew is ok , lookin good y'all
Nice garden Jess
You need a back brace to wear when you do heavy work and to protect when you are sore. Also warm up stretches before you work to prevent injury. Talk to Physio about prevention.
Maybe a low cost back brace, one that is not very restrictive. I am disabled and a back brace at times makes it possible for me to do things. When I was younger I did a lot of lifting and wore my back out. Protect yourself where you can. Keep up the good work.
Your videos have inspired me to try something similar. I am trying to get to a point of self sufficiency. It is hard work but satisfying work. Going to modify my root cellar based on your events, always learning from others. Love the videos.
Best of luck!
I have land in a similar desert type climate, best thing I ever did was get loads of woodchips. Totally solves the mud problem and the dust problem. Eventually it will improve the soil too. Also it helps the water go into the ground instead of running off or evaporating. Cheap/Free Mulch might not be accessible to you, but if it is get some. It should last a good long while in an arid environment. Start with areas you walk or drive on frequently. Prevents erosion/ rutting. Pleasant looking too. I as worried about our high winds relocating it, but hasn't been a problem, I guess it interlocks pretty well, especially after it settles/ gets walked/driven on.
Cool garden.
"The Garden of Jess" is a good name for the garden
Gotta love the Cob! Be the Cob ! You are the Cob!
Alright now, you lovebirds! 🧡❤️🧡
definitely back breaking work, I sure that was an issue with the wheel barrel, take it easy
That pretty cool that self gravity watering system 👍👍👍🙏🏻
Howdy Jess and Jim. I agree with many here, a back brace when working will help you. Hope you get well Jim.
Jess, Echo Dome sounds catchy. Hope Crew gets well also. Hope it’s nothing major. Blessings to you all and Crew. Be safe and stay dry. Looks like more wet weather coming your way. Two hurricanes from the gulf moving north.
Best wishes for inspector crueso . Dogs are the best creatures on the planet. I call a lot of people creatures because there not human. My dogs are smarter , more loving & appreciative than 90 % of the 2 legged creatures.
Good Morning 😊
Looks like some seriously hard work you two are accomplishing love the little sombrero home y’all created .very commendable …I would love to see anything about self reliance ..a root cellar in the desert…if you have access to an herb called plantain it is amazing for drawing out poisons and unwanted things in our bodies…an absolute in a self reliant homestead and then to heal comfrey…I’m a gardener and the last three years have opened my eyes to all of the amazing healing properties of plants…stay safe sty blessed…
You guys are awesome. Love your channel and when you post a video.
My suggestion for the course is how to look for a property and what to look for.
Favorite thing on the playground garden
You BOTH are a blessing just dooing what you do. you both have a wonderful attude 100 points. The Magoo's in Milo, Maine
I think JUNGLE GYM PLANTATION for the garden thingy. Every time I see it i think of the jungle gym at my elementary school. For the younger generation i don't think they allow you all to have the playground equipment we had back then. I can't wait until the root cellar is finished or at least the earth bag part done. If I had a house of my own I would take your class, but I live where we aren't even allowed to plant things in the ground. I have my tomatoes, peppers and bell peppers in containers. I already harvested the green onions. I sure hope Crew is alright ❤❤❤
Hope you think about getting a lumbar support belt. Keep your back healthy. Cheers!
Hey Jim took your idea for file cabinets for tools. Great idea. ! Jess, love your artistic influence.
File cabinets are the best! I'm glad you're using them.
❤ 🎉 Jess great idea to plant slightly sprouting vegies. However! Could have eaten half the lengths of carrots and let the cut end heal over. Then plant the carrot tops. You probably know if let grow they will produce SEEDS!🎉😊 that you can them plant. WIN WIN WIN❤❤
Course/class would be great…. Suggest starting with the basics first then go to full time living. So start with land selection and things to search for… then go thru sustainability elements that you two have learned
I’d love a dedicated video garden tour !
Make sure to bend your knees and get down every time, use your legs instead. Lately I’ve been with a lot of back pain too. I hope you guys get better soon. Take it easier.
Jess and Jim we could use some of that rain down south Louisiana.....and ecodome sounds great.
Good job 👍👍👍👍 ,that sucks how heavy that wheelbarrow load was , maybe only half full at a time bud , yay 🙌 on the rain 🌨️🌨️🌨️🌨️🌨️
Fingers crossed for your fur baby
Crazy times. God bless.
Jess make your own oijas.. or clay pots I general.. make your own clay. Fire it the old way . .
That gravity fed watering system is cool good job
Jess I'd like to see how you created ur watering system in your garden
Great suggestion!
Hope Crew is alright, and your back Jim!😊
Cloud dome, you sure make one question how to live and survive an echo friendly lifestyle. May you go from strength to strength. 🇺🇸👀📯
Must be tough working alongside a Beautiful Dessert Flower!
A course sounds amazing! What are the first & most important steps to take to get started moving off- grid?
Yall's are awesome, your hard work is paying off.. Keep at it an youll see the rewards 😊
Hope your pup (not sure how you spell his name.. Lol), is OK and he back to his normal life.. soon..
Jess: soft foam ear plugs help ❤ just keep them clean w/hydrogen peroxide washes or replace once a week
In answer to your question about what we would like to see. I have a suggestion. Probably it would be good if you included some things about posture to protect yourself while working. A little safety course might be good. You could do some research of outher courses, so you get a good perspective on some really good things to include. I remember something from a course here in Western Australia in the mining industy. It's just a catchy saying with a little animation charactor called SAMY Stop the Hazard Assess the risk Make the changes. Just a thought. I remember that it was taught in a way that it stuck, really stuck once you heard it even once. SAM - Spot the hazard Asses the risk Make the changes. They included little safety video clips of common accidents so people had there minds prepped and thinking in regard to safety and thinking ahead.
love seeing your garden coming along great stuff how much water did you get with the last rain god bless
Excellent ideas about sharing knowledge. Wish I was your neighbor.... and I would give you a start of my Comfrey plant....
I have followed you two almost since you started the channel. And it needs to be said, I could have built 4 house in the time it has taken you to not even build one. Build an Arch house it is cheap and strong.
Please pray for the people on Maui, Hawaii when a wildfire burnt down the whole town of Lahaina.
They definitely have our prayers
One heck of a monsoon storm! Have you considered adding lightning arrestors on your structures?
How to be financially independent homesteading in the desert? Also , are there any farmers market to buy food?
I have not tried it once the carrots were sprouting, but I found online that for droopy carrots, if you cover them in water up to the level of where the greens come out in a tall container in the fridge, they will rehydrate and be back to normal again.
hope your back is better Jim
I hope you consider a water sequestering strategy for the property by creating ponds of water around your food growing areas when you get to that point
We already have some
I just put enough water to keep the grass alive and not burn all up. You need to make a bunch of stock ponds. This will bring wild life around you! You will never have to buy meats. Possible raise some catfish ect. The high fin blue channel catfish is? The best to raise.
looks great love how the Owl box is transitioning... try some basic Yoga specifically for low back .. congrats on the rain..
You two are the course, constantly teaching by showing, doing and explaining each step of the way. I am blown away by you guys. Ok now to your request for my input. .I would like to know about your goals.on permaculture, are you going to go bigger on amount of produce, and if so are you looking to try and fill that root cellar to the roof. Thanks for what you share with all of us. Keep well and take care.
Michael
I wanna say you should get a small tractor or quad to assist in moving dirt, rocks and building materials. that will keep you healthy
