Lluvia (LLUVIA, pronounced yuviuh) is Spanish for rain. Very fitting for their environment, and a fitting video to share that info in 😁
@tedtimmis8135, Crew is recovering from a tumor removal surgery. He is also an older pup, and can't move around like he used to. He's usually hanging out inside the camper where it's more temperature controlled, but they do take him for (short) walks regularly. Also, he and Lluvia don't really seem to get along (last I saw them together, maybe a year ago?) so they've pretty much always kept them separate.

Yah, I have been wondering about Crew too. A room was mentioned for the female dog but not for Crew. I think he was originally Jess's brothers dog, her brother was with them for awhile not too long ago but no longer, could he have resumed ownership of Crew and Crew be off living with him? I could've missed some news about Crew, it just feels like he's not there. I feel like if Crew had passesd we would know about it.

Everything is coming along nicely. I can’t wait to see your vision come to life.
    Food for thought…
You may want to consider installing a wet room style walk in shower, in the bathroom with outside access. That way you could have an area to easily wash the dogs.
Cleanup could mostly involve using a hose, with a sprayer.
You could also install something that you could clip a short leash to, to make it easier to keep them in place.
    Best of luck!

One simple and accurate way of checking the propane level is to pour some hot water on the side of the propane tank, and then feel it with your hand. Everywhere there is propane touching the side of the tank the steel will cool off very quickly. The portion of the tank above the level of propane will cool off much slower so you can easily feel the level of the propane.

  • @kermitfrog8340

I like the plans, myself would either make temp shelter over steps of cellar or finalise where walls will bethen do a post and beam system with either 4x4 or 6x6 posts once headers and top plates are on you could do shed style roof with over hang so low winter sun can enter but high summer sun would cast shade. You could have two sections of shed style roof making south greenhouse wall the highest say 12 foot sloping to north using 16 foot 2x6 as rafters the higher roof drops down to lower roof which you tin so you could collect massive amounts of extra water. Then working from top down you would have shade and be out of rain fill in between posts with bales and render them for very fast and cheap build. Or you could ask some greenhouse places to sponsor you and get a kit from them and build greenhouse directly over root cellar. Would hate to see another flood wreck the cellar. Interested to see what your plans are.

Hey guys, looking forward to hearing about what construction technique you're going to use next. Just a suggestion...you might consider swapping the pups room with the kitchen so that the kitchen is next to the laundry room to consolidate the plumbing to the same area...putting the plumbing on a shared wall. Since your laundry room is going to have an exterior door anyway, you could put a toilet in there for easy access from outside. For that matter, you could also move the bathroom to the location of the laundry and put the laundry between the bathroom and kitchen to consolidate all the plumbing in the house. Just some ideas.

Concerning floor layout... Work in the trade winds, for fresh air. Do not waste a corner of the house on a bathroom. Some people are allergic to the soil surface of a green house. Make sure to work the layout on the computer and try to live it as best as possible. Do not skimp on the counter top and storage.

As a hardy desert dweller for 7 years I have a few lessons on dealing with 120plus days in the summer'
Now I live in a 640sqft tiny house built in 1960. It is well designed for the extreme heat of the Mojave desert.
If I was building a homestead from scratch in these extreme heat conditions, I would go under ground for a house like your root cellar.
By going underground using the earth to cool the house in the summertime and to keep warm in the winter.

Wow that is way bigger than I pictured! Very cool! After you hinted at not using earth bags for this part I was thinking that you guys might go with a bale-and-cob structure for the second part of the house, since IIRC you guys were surprised how much you enjoy working with cob. So I'm not sure about the straw bale part but I'd bet cob will play a big part in it. And I just searched it up and watched the interview with your neighbors Karen and Bob about their house from several years ago, and in fact Bob said he'd use more straw bales if he had to build again.
They built an open timber frame with a roof first and then just build a windowless straw bale wall and three cob walls underneath. I really like the monoslope/shed roof idea, too...I've long since thought that if I ever build that's what I'd want. I really dislike how all the cookie cutter, stick-built houses have a hundred little hips and valleys for no reason other than people think it looks nice. To me it looks like they want the roof to fail faster.

firsst YOUR LOOKING FANTATIC and I to need to be in the space. I love the idea o th elaundry room , please consider adding a shower so that when you have worked outside you can come in , put your clothing to be washed , take a shower and not muddy up your home, les time having to clean the house! put a drain in the laundry room for easy floor cleaning with a hose. Have the used water go through a bio plant filter that can act as a peaceful pond in side the green house, thereby allowing you to use the recycled laundry and bath water to water the green house and create a nice winter sitting room and then from there it can go out to the orchard...just a thought but thats what im doing what i finally get to that point! be blessed

When is monsoon season? Will the two of you be able to get the whole house built to the point of having a roof over it before then? Will the addition have a flat roof over it to help catch more rain?
