    A great thing about olla/clay pots is that they stay cooler, and when buried they're cool. This is very important especially in the desert weather you are in.

    Jessica, thank you for spelling out your design so well. I live on the sid o🎉a hill. Much of my property is terraced. I have been researching all kinds of passive watering systems that can make use of my reservoir (an ingrown pool that I filter using a combination of solar power, ram pump, to circulate through fish pond, and plant marsh filtration arrangement). I haven't found a way to evenly distribute the water evenly without adding a pressurized element. I believe you have shown me the way. I'll need to start resourcing clay pots because I believe you are my inspiration for a much sought after solution to my conundrum. Blessings abundant to you all.

    An artist at work, the top part of your barrel in the shape of a flower as a bird bath is so beautiful an ingenious idea. wow such beautiful lavender the leaves on that lavender is serrated unlike the usual lavender we grow here in the UK, I have tried that one and it will not survive the winter with out being put into the green house. I love the little stones cap on top of the pot they are beautiful very original have to watch this video again. The system is extremely clever. I could not have those pots in my garden as the frost would shatter them and here in the UK we do not have very long period of dry weather. Very clever system Jessica 👏👏👏👏Thanks for this wonderful video.

    The rocks around the barrel makes it look like a well - I like it 👍👍 I use a cement bird bath to give water to my bees 🐝🐝🐝🐝 I keep them in fresh water EVERY DAY Its a cheap and great way to Attract Honey bees THEY NEED LOTS OF WATER, To make honey and wax.. Plus Bees Do like to swim. They got wax all over them. and can stay afloat for a long time. They like to swim on there backs. Some times i let them crawl on my finger to get them out. Then flip it off. That bee 🐝will remember you as well, and become your best friend 🤣

    I do something similar for our saplings. I bury a PVC pipe at an angle about 4 feet deep directed at their base. In the sweltering heat of Summer it is a great way to water those deeper roots. Plus it makes your tree grow deeper in order to reach the water. My trees grow crazy fast.

    I set up a micro feed system in a previous house, to water my hanging baskets, that was connected to a Men's urinal flush cistern. I'm not sure if you use this type in America. It's a cistern that fills up slowly with 2 Gallon of water then dumps it out of the bottom pipe. Then shuts off the water exiting and refills. You can set it to different times to flush, from 1/2 an hour to 2 hours. You will need to feed the cistern from a tank that's higher. Connect all your micro pipes into a manifold at the bottom and 'Wa-lar'! The jobs a gooden It keeps everything moist, without having to get the watering can out. My hanging baskets were massive, never got dehydrated and I never had to get the watering can out. I think the system you are using is perfect and well thought out. Just giving you maybe a different idea that may be helpful in another application. Love all the work your doing, watching you overcome problems as you go. Learning from your mistakes and moving on. Hope Jess and you have solved your Bee problem. Much love Jon. xxx

    Love this, keeping your plants watered under ground helps use less water and is more consistent for the plants health. Less water and more growth = winning combination. I would definitely consider using your method if I had the space for a bigger garden where I live. Unfortunately I'm limited to veggies and flowers that are grown in containers, so this year I used my grandchildrens empty water and soft drink bottles and poked 2 very small holes in them and buried them up to almost all the way to the caps. I remove the cap fill the bottles and then put the cap back on tightly the plants pull the water as they need it. On really hot days or extended dry spells I sometimes leave the cap off until the water drains and refill it before capping it. I've been amazed at how well it's worked. No scorched plants! I even made my first 5 gallon grow bag this spring and will definitely be making more it seems to grow better than in the actual containers and much cheaper too! There's just so much satisfaction in watching your plants grow up healthy and productive and watching pollinating visitors come and go. Though I would imagine your growing season is a little longer than ours is up here in Rhode Island. I'm already thinking about what to add next year and will try to find an area that I can at least try a few oya pots. I'd love to meet you Jess, I love all the creativity you and Jim put into your projects ❤

    Nicely done! Consider adding a fine mesh screen material under the bird bath to avoid mosquitos from getting into the water from around the bird bath. Be careful of scorpions reaching in for the valve. I don’t mean to be a downer, but living in AZ requires such precautions.

    Howdy Jess and Jim. Well done Jess. You did an amazing job. A lot of work. Looks great. What did you use to make those nice looking lids for the pots? Mosaic looking. Also, drawings would greatly help. I’m in the city and I’m really impressed on your work and what it accomplishes. So the pots get filled and the water that seeps from the filled pots water the plants? I’m wanting to start a garden for next year and your method would work well here. I may ask you, Jim, on how you started your rain water collection. You guys rock. Thank you so much for this information. Hope Crew is better. Glad you are doing well, Jess. Jim, hope your back is better. Blessings to you all and Peter.

    You don't need to drill holes in the pots if you lay two - firmly glued together - pots on their side and use the bottom holes as inlet and outlet holes for the pipe. Alternatively, you can then drill one hole in the side of the last pot (which then faces upwards) so that you can see when the water reaches the end.

    • @desertedenblooms
      @desertedenblooms Před 9 měsíci

      Actually your method is less work and frankly dont see the point of drilling a third viewing hole since water seeks to level itself but the hollas will have to leveled more.thanks!

    Hey Jess and Jim, I like Jesse's watering method, I have seen it before. The big trick is to remember to turn it off. You know you will be doing something else, and I always forget until the water is going down the gutter. Lol
    Now that the cooler weather is coming are you going to inclose the dome so you can grow vegetables through the winter? I think that would be a good idea. Here in Thailand we really don't have to worry about that. It never freezes here, so we have no problem with growing year-round.
    You guys have a great day, and I will catch you on the next video. ❤

    As long as the string of pots are lower than the 55 gallon barrel there is no need to put them in descending order. Water will always seek its on level. I think I saw you using a clear tube with water to check level on something once. I might be mistaking. I find about every 2 or 3 years you must clean old roots from around the pots. Shows how well they work if it is good for the roots! You should look into "Wicking self watering containers". Easy and cheap to make.👍
