It's a little known (?) fact (I just happen to know it because I know the ballet, and that Freddie was influenced by Nijinsky) that the central fantasy portion of this video is based around a ballet called L'Apres-Midi du Faun (The Afternoon of the Faun), famously danced with Nijinsky in the title role early in the 20th Century. Freddie's costume is almost identical and the grapes are right there in the ballet. All the sensual writhing about is taken from the bit where the Faun (Nijinsky) 'makes love' shall we say to a scarf dropped by the beautiful nymph he fancies but can't have. :-)

Deborah Cornell commented correctly. First, the song was written by base player John Deacon (old lady on couch reading newspaper). It was drummer Roger Taylor’s wife’s idea to dress in drag (blonde girl in black skirt). It was a take-off of a very popular British soap opera called Coronation Street. Brian May is in the nightgown & bunny slippers. Freddie wanted to shave his mustache for the entire video, but they thought it would be funnier if he left it for parts. The dancing was with the Royal Ballet. MTV in the US didn’t get the joke & banned it. So Freddie refused to tour the US after that. The song was a hit everywhere, except the US.
Hey Jude I didn’t know MTV banned it. I definitely saw it in the US, but maybe on USA’s Night Flight or NBC’s Friday Night Video. I do remember it didn’t get near the air play that MTV gave the first single off the album Radio GaGa. I also liked the third single Hammer to Fall. Enjoyed this song a lot at the time and just figured Brits were always doing drag for comedy, a la Monty Python.

I’ve definitely seen interviews with different people (including Roger Taylor & Brian May) talking about how MTV standards were very prudish & Puritan, and not allowing the video to be played. I don’t ever recall seeing it on MTV, and I was there to watch it premiere, but perhaps they aired it at a later date after restrictions were loosened up.
WTF? MTV of all channels chose to ban a Queen video?! When the hell did MTV get all prudish? The amount of crap that was on even back then was worse than this video. SMH We sure dropped the ball on that here and some punk ass executives at tiny ass network (back then) made a stupid choice that pissed Freddie Mercury of all people! On behalf of the Queen loving people of the USA I extend my sincerest apologies to Queen and Freddie Mercury, may he rest in peace, for that disrespectful decision that was not the will of the people. it was meant as a parody to coronation street - a long running British soap opera. It was Roger Taylor's then girlfriend's idea.
Freddie was going to shave off his tash for the video but the director told him not to, as it is funnier with it.
Also the bit with the miners was probably a show of solidarity with the coal miners who had gone on strike the month before. The strike ended up lasting from March 6th 1984 to March 3rd 1985!
Part of the reason why he walked up the stairs the way that he did, was that he was fabulous.

The whole band in drag is based on a english soap opera call Coronation street and the weird part with the dancers is performance from the Royal Ballet which Freddie loved and always wanted to dance with them. This video was banned by MTV because they didnt get it either.

@@DragonZeron All so called overdub has been removed on the rock Montreal release, certain songs on the Montreal 1981 2001 dvd release had horrible editing they couldn't cut between two nights correctly, and the visuals didn't exist so they had to use both nights on certain songs.

Written by John Deacon, this was a parody of a British soa opera, Coronation Street, and women's lib which was in the news. The ballet segment is when Freddie was invited to sing and perform with the Royal Ballet. All the guys in the band thought it would be great fun, but the American powers that were in control of the music industry weren't laughing and that was pretty much the end of their American record sales for a while

Dont forget Freddie was born on the island of zanzibar. He us parsi Indian . His parents moved to England when he was a child.
He was bisexual, his parents were pretty conservative, so I imagine a lot of his music possibly comes from his desire to be himself, at a time when it wasnt so socially acceptable as it is now.
You could interpret bohemian rhapsody almost as a confession to his mother of who he really was. And the man he killed was the man his parents thought he was.
The reason its as n emotional rollercoaster is because that's pretty much what his life was. Ecstasy and frustration and joy and rage all mixed in together.

The main part of the video was based on characters from the long running and highly popular British soap opera, 'Coronation Street', which has been running since 1960 and is set in and around a working class street in Manchester. The ballet part is a re-creation of a famous dance piece by the famous ballet dancer, 'Nijinsky'. The video killed Queen's popularity in the US but they remained hugely popular virtually everywhere outside of the US.

This song was written by John Deacon and Roger Taylor's girlfriend suggested they do it in drag to imitate the very popular show in the UK called Coronation Street. It is pure camp meaning that it is so ridiculous that it is funny. The second scene are professional dancers of the Royal Ballet. No intended message, just John Deacon's songwriting.
