    The song has nothing to do with sexuality. Just because you're gay doesn't mean you want to dress as a woman 😆 John Deacon wrote the song and it's said to be about the women's liberation movement. Roger's girlfriend came up with the idea to dress up as women. They're dressed as characters from a british soap. The video got banned on MTV in America and people gave Freddie alot of shit for it of course 🙄 It made him refuse to come back to perform in America again. Great song and I love the video. It's so tame and harmless when you compare to what people do nowadays lol.

    It was drummer Roger Taylor's girlfriend's idea to dress in drag. Bass guitar player John Deacon was the frumpy granny in the dark coat and hat, guitarist Brian May was wearing the curlers, pink satin and lace nighty and bunny slippers (I think he was possibly the spinster or widow Auntie). Dressing in drag is a popular form of comedy in the UK. The idea for the video was they were spoofing a popular soap opera called Coronation Street. The guys all had a blast dressing in drag, they thought it was hilarious. As an America, I personally love it and think its hysterical! Infamously, the stuffed shirts at MTV didn't get the joke behind the cross-dressing part of the video and banned it. Ronald Reagan was President at the time. The ballet section actually featured Freddie with members of the royal ballet, of which Freddie was a huge fan. The role Freddie is supposed to be, I think is Puck, the sprite most famous from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's dream." Also, in case your wondering, the device in the opening sequence was a tea-maid. Its a combination kettle and alarm clock. Its supposed to boil water or make tea when the alarm goes off, but was reputedly unstable. Also, the band was always experimenting with their music, pushing the envelope, going against the grain. Brian May and Roger tailor did an audio commentary on this song and its really interesting and funny. czcams.com/video/jiwz3sBEWcU/video.html I miss your Queen reactions.

    The thing you have to bear in mind is that dressing as women for comedic purposes is everywhere in UK culture. When I was growing up in the 1980’s virtually every comedian would dress in drag. It wasn’t provocative or shocking, it was mainstream and it continues to this day. Every sketch show would have the comedians in drag, Les Dawson, the Two Ronnies, Fry and Laurie, the League of Gentlemen, Little Britain, Monty Python everyone did it then and still do today.
    There is nothing sexual about this. A UK audience would easily see this as a bit of a laugh. This wasn’t meant to be provocative at all, it’s a funny video in the style of British comedy. This was no more shocking in the UK than Saturday night family TV when this was released.
    Of course in the US and elsewhere this was a big shocking video but in the UK this was about as controversial as the Price is Right.

  • @pawzforthought
    @pawzforthought Před 3 lety +21

    One thing you need to bear in mind is that there is a long tradition in Britain of men dressing up in women's clothing. It dates back hundreds of years when women were not allowed to be actors. For instance, in Shakespeare's time, all the female parts were played by men and boys. It's still ingrained in the culture. Pantos, plays based on fairy tales, are performed here every Christmas and there is always a fairy godmother, wicked witch, or the like which is performed by a male actor. They quite often upstage the female lead and are a favourite of the children for their comic performances and the liberal throwing of sweets into the audience. Men often dress up for stag nights and Halloween. And, of course, you will find many comedy shows that feature plot devices that require men to dress up as a comic foil. Hopefully this goes some way towards providing some background towards other folks' posts about how it was a bit of fun rather than anything truly significant. Though I do think it plays nicely into the idea of trying to break free of the drudgery of everyday life.

    John was a big women's rights advocate and he wrote this song as an anthem for women. The drag was supposedly the idea of Roger's girlfriend (maybe that's why he looked the best!) This was meant as a comical spoof of a hit British soap opera, so the UK fans would have instantly understood the meaning. However, US audiences rarely got to see it because MTV banned it. That's a major surprise considering some of the other stuff that was airing on MTV at the time.

    The video with the 4 of them dressed up as women was making fun of a British soap called Coronation Street. So many men thought the young lady in the kitchen was sexy, until she turned around and they saw it was Roger Taylor( the drummer). This was the second single from The Works album, released in 1984. It is written by John Deacon( the bass guitar player). John was the quiet man of the band.

    This was a parody on the huge TV British soap opera “Coronation Street “ and his character was Bet Lynch on the soap. This video freaked out the MTV execs in the USA and told them rock stars don’t dress in drag, and Americans like their rock stars macho.....also, that American audiences won’t get British humor. Silly as Freddie was macho on stage 100%. Queen said they would not change the video and Queen stopped touring the USA. A shame because Americans would not have seen it this way.....they maybe would initially reacted with “Wha?” only because we were so used to his macho persona on stage.....but it wouldn’t have mattered. The entire world understood the parody and knew the show, because British TV is all over that side of the Atlantic. But the USA did not. The execs caused the problem. Not Queen and not the audience. But this is the video that made Queen not return.

    Proud to be British 🇬🇧and growing up in the 80’s. Can I say when I first watched this video for the first time I hardly recognised Roger Taylor as the girl in this video. It’s such a convincing performance I was blown away. Queen are outstanding to me and always will be. John Deacon I just love him 💕 Doesn’t get enough credit and is overlooked in videos. He wrote this song. Words cannot express how much of Deakys influence went into this band. He’s done some amazing music and will go down in history as the greatest Bassist ever
    This song is just amazing. It’s upbeat, happy even though it’s about wanting freedom. Freddie M- there just isn’t a version of him anywhere now he’s gone. RIP to him 🙏🏻🌈

      I love the bit at the end where Fred goes up the stairs. There is a running joke that many characters went upstairs and never returned. One was called Tracy she went upstairs wasn’t seen for a few years and changed actress.

    I love this song. I think a lot of people have already commented that its a John Deacon song. Apparently John would rarely say much while the other 3 argued and talked over each other with their ideas, but whenever John spoke they all automatically shut up because John would only ever speak up when he had something really good or really important to say. Actually it is interesting to check out which band member wrote each of the songs when you listen to them (all 4 of them individually wrote numbers one hits for the band - the only band to hold that achievement) as they all have subtle differences in the style. They were great as collaborators. If you have ever seen the film Flash Gordon (very cheesy, but lots of fun) Queen did the soundtrack for the film and the theme song was written by Brian May.

    Oh if you can check out The UK Soap Opera Eastenders tribute to Queen. It celebrated it's 35th Anniversary earlier this year and around November they do Tributes from Motown, The Beatles and Queen to raise money for children in need. One of the best was in 2019 when Disney celebrated the 90th Birthday of Mickey Mouse. The Cast Members like their US Counterparts have strong ties to Theater (known as The West End).
