Believe was recorded and released in 1998, and peaked at #1 in 21 countries worldwide. On March 13, 1999, it reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US, making Cher the oldest female artist (at the age of 52) to perform this feat. Cher also set the record for a solo artist with the longest span of time between number one hits, since "Dark Lady" reached #1 in 1974. She also set a mark for longest gap between her first #1 song "I Got You Babe" in 1965 with her then-husband Sonny Bono, and her #1 hit Believe, a total of 34 years! Now that is staying power.
Believe also was ranked as the number-one song of 1999 by "Billboard" on both the "Billboard" Hot 100 and Hot Dance Club Play charts and became the biggest single in her entire career.
Cher is also a multi-nominated actress, winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for the movie Moonstruck.

You have no idea how happy this reaction made me today!! I follow several reaction pages and you are the first to react to Cher (pronounced like "Sher" NOT "chair" LOL). This woman is a cultural icon and national treasure, the ONLY female artist to have a number one hit in every decade since the 1960's! Not only has she excelled in music, but also in television and up on the big screen (complete with an Academy Award!!) She has had several "comebacks" since her debut in 1965 as one half of the duo Sonny & Cher, but 1998's "Believe" was the comeback of all comebacks, permanently cementing her place as a solo artist in pop culture history!
When this song hit radio back in the late nineties nobody had ever heard anything like it, it was the first to use auto-tune and not only that, it reached the number one spot in several countries and introduced Cher to a multitude of new fans who had never heard of her before.
Now in her seventies, she is still working hard and contributing to the arts. I saw her live on her most recent tour less than a year ago! She is a force of nature! And while many people have encouraged you to listen to "Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves" (which is a great, campy little story song), I would ask you to react to "Turn Back Time", "Heart of Stone" and "Song for the Lonely", three tracks that truly embody who she is, not only as an artist, but as a person.

This is a club banger. Many artists, particularly on those singing contest shows, have tried to do slowed down versions of the song and turn it into a ballad. This is the original and the best. If you want more Cher, try a big song for her from the 1970's called "Half Breed."

@@jenniferlindsay103 Autotune was invented in 1997, by Andy Hildebrand, PhD. Before it, there were different voice altering techniques. Roger Troutman used a custom made “Talk Box” (the Electro Harmonix), which connected through a synthesizer. Cher's 1998 "Believe" is one of the earliest uses of Autotune in music & is credited as the 1st use of Autotune to intentionally distort the voice (rather than to correct the voice). The resulting “part human synthesizer-part robotic voice” was dubbed “the Cher effect.”

Bob Mackie 's costumes were amazing and she wore them like she was born in them. But as a blonde, green-eyed, curvy, Midwest girl, I just settled for trying to copy her make-up styles! When I was a teenager in Miami beach, I worked for WQAM radio. I was assigned to pick up Sonny and Cher and drive them while they were in town to sing at a local concert. It was summer of 1966, I was 15 and Cher was 19...their first song "I got you babe" it was a great time, and when I took them to the airport afterward, I got on the plane with them. (You could do that then). Cher said..."hey Bon, why don't you come to California with us"...I was so naive and said, I couldn't cause I had a test in school the next day....lol...we stayed in touch for a few years. She and Sonny (and their small entourage) we so down to earth, had great senses of humor, and we're very kind to me. I still have some pix of us ...great moment! I loved Cher from the first moment. I was like six years old when Sonny and Cher were on TV. Over my lifetime, she reinvented herself and her sound so many times. She is incredibly talented. Now, at 74... she still very vibrant and lovely. I Got You Babe is my favorite song. When she was married to Sonny Bono, it was sweet. They were both so young and goofy looking. Then she got a nose job and met clothing designer Bob Mackie who dressed her like a goddess. It’s almost like she grew out of Sonny. He went on to into politics and died in a tragic skiing accident. She was married to Greg Allman for a while. She has done a lot. Great actress, won all kinds of amazing awards for song and film. I especially liked song... If You Could Turn Back Time. Very in your face racy video in the 80s. She was the original Lady Gaga of fashion. She kept up her looks with clean living and lots of cosmetic surgery. Still... there is and never will be anyone like Cher. Legend.

I love Cher, I don't care how old she is, she's still got that amazing voice and can still rock it! But the way she looks and everything in this video, it is so hard to believe that she was 52 years old when this was released. The song was released in October of 1998 and I read something that said in January of the following year, this song reached the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number one on the chart in March of that year, 1999, making Cher the oldest female artist to accomplish this. I don't know if she still holds that record or not but I assume she does because I can't think of anyone older than that who's had a number 1 song since this one. Still a great song to jam to, it's one of those songs that never gets old no matter how many times you play it. I can't wait for you to check out more of her stuff, she's got a never ending library of amazing songs throughout her career.
