John Conteh possessed one of the greatest jabs in Boxing history and he's definitely one of the best world champions the UK has ever produced. His prime was cut short because he succumbed to the high life with drinking and partying but at his best he was a masterful boxer and an excellent fighter who could mix it up with all of the Light-Heavyweight greats. www.patreon.com/haNZAgod
Ray Mercer Next!
Well before Conteh got into the nightlife, drink, druns and women, he had trouble with his fragile hands which could have belonged to a pianist
I remember him scoring 2 ko's, one at the beginning of his career and one at the end where he hadn't thrown his right hand all fight.
He was peppering both fighters with his jab and also hooking off the jab when bang !!! he threw his straight right and it was game over.
The first one was Preacher Lewis at Liverpool Stadium, the second one was Leonardo Rodgers.
I always thought Conteh had beaten Mate Parlov but he didn't get the nod.
His first fight with Matthew Saad Muhammad should have been stopped in his favour as the American's cornermen all but cemented his cut eye back together.
Massively underrated in my opinion.
Not only did Conteh have a fight winning left jab, he also fought a lot of his later fights, one handed.
He and Ken Buchanan were 2 of British boxing's brightest lights in the 70's and both had lock picking left jabs and underrated power.
76” reach! Fought in the most loaded 175 era. MSM, Qawi, Johnson and Galindez and he held a belt.
Man that is one tough era 🥊
76" reach
The late 40's with Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore and Lloyd Marshall unable to get a shot at Gus Leznevich's protected crown was a good era for talent rich light heavies.
Any of those 3 would have battered both Lesnevich and Freddie Mills.
Also Yaqui Lopez
Well Saad beat him twice and he didn't face any of the other guys you've mentioned.
It was the first time I saw this boxer at work. Thank you, Hanza, have a good day🥊
Among all light heavies, not mentioning Foster purposely, both Conteh and Michalczewki had an amazing left hand in terms of masterful jab and sharp ko'ing hook (this was more of Michalczewski weapon, watch his bout vs Roberto Domingues where one shot was a game changer or I'd rather should have said game over). Love your channel, you are doing a helluva work for boxing promotion across the whole world. Thanks to you not only the casual fans but also guys who are there for years have a possibility to get to know or remind boxers who were not performing for big TV events or were not recognisable that much, or came from East where turning pro wasn't even possible before 1989.
What an amazing technican. Getting past that high-speed battering ram must have felt a near impossible challange for many of his opponents. God bless you Hanza, for making us remember of these great fighters!
I grew up seeing him. I was half a generation too young to appreciate that jab as I see it now. A bit like many things in life.
Great pick, I'll be looking at a few of his vids now to fix him into my memory to honor great fighters. Good music , too.
From Bob FOster retirement up to Spinks unification/undisputed is the greatest period of the 175lbs division, it's golden age.
Some many exciting fighters , no doubt a golden age 🥊
I don’t think I’ve met a person yet who’s watched John Conteh and their first response wasn’t “look at that jab!” Lol
What an athlete, what a reach and what a beautiful jab !
No idea who this guy was. But my god that jab is insane.
The most important punch in boxing, the old saying goes "a good right hand will take you around the block a good jab will take you around the world"
That jab was beautiful
I always like Ur music to hanzagod my guy
🥊Simply Outstanding Highlights ❗️👍👍
Masterful jabs
Thanks for uploading
AMAZING
Great videos
Never heard of this one, thanks bro. It’s not often but I love having a new fighter to research! 🙏🏾 💯. Good music too
Beautiful boxer John, silky, sleek. Master pugilist, not a ko merchant either, when it was 15 round bouts.
Eusebio pedroza highlights were brilliant
Good quality footage for a fighter who's entire career took place in the 1970's.
I love the music flows like his jab
Brilliant!
I love that flick flick Ali esque on his toes in the zone
amazing
Beautiful jab, like water!
Such a fast and effective job that kept his opponents at bay and rendered their punches and advances useless. Glad to have learned of this boxer!
Smooth
🔥🔥🔥
Jeez that’s insane.
this is my great uncle !!💗
Top fella in superstars ...as a kid growing up JC was unbelievable.
If he was around today he'd still better best with that jab speed and footwork ... just a masterclass of ability 👍
Underrated. I like his interview with Tony Bellew too.
So accurate
Our best 175 lbser in history imo
He had a thudding jab for sure, kind of reminds me of the jab of Pinklon Thomas.
the definition of an educated left hand!
Wow
Conteh had one of the best jabs in light heavyweight history along with Tommy Loughran, John Henry Lewis, Billy Conn, Joey Maxim, Archie Moore, Harold Johnson, Bob Foster, Michael Spinks, Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, Virgil Hill and other great jabbers in that division.
Ezzard Charles?!
@@joshuaduffy4796 Yeah Ezzard Charles too.
Heard he was mainly a 1 handed fighter but is very skillful
He’s up there for sure, Dwight Muhammad Qawis was spectacular also considering his size.
He's the perfect example of taking what is often seen as a disadvantage into an advantage. The way he used to out jab much taller and rangier fighters was unbelievable
I feel Best is objective when it comes to the jab. Most seem to prefer volume over damage. Like the argument between Holmes and Liston for greatest Heavyweight Jab.
Look at his rhythm
One of the most talented boxers to come out of UK is from Liverpool
Yaqui Lopez was a perennial contender at the time and as hard as nails.
James Scott was another tough contender and of course he was incarcerated.
I have a request, can you do a highlight on the heavyweight Sinan Şamil Sam.
Prime Kovalev’s jab was pretty nice
It was amazing although not quite as great as Conteh's in my opinion
And how is kovalev jab in front of him?
interesting pick for best jabber at 175. i'd give the edge to Hercules Harold Johnson. what a fight that would have been.
Excellent fighter perhaps he ranks slightly above Conteh in an all time great sense but I'd still give the edge in jabs to Conteh. Would be an amazing technical fight though for sure.
He was like an orthodox Marvin Hagler
Michael spinks or John conteh?
Have to give the edge to Spinks prime for prime. Great champion
Was Conteh really left handed? He seems similar to right handed guys who fight southpaw. Very persistent jabbers. It was his best punch.
No we wasn't a lefty.
Looks like a natural left hand guy similar to Oscar de la Hoya, Miguel cotto, and Andre Ward just to name a few. Still his jab is impressive.
best jab in light heavy is still Kovalev in my eyes even after watching this
Excellent jab but not better than Conteh's. Conteh dominated the better opposition with his jab than Kovalev did.
WOW! look at that thing. Could've fooled me if you told me he was Mexican too.
Such a surprising pick! And here I thought names like Sergey Kovalev, Bob Foster or Harold Johnson should have that title but no, you really surprised me with yours!
All excellent fighters with great jabs but Conteh has the best of the bunch from what I've seen.
Has a great jab, and coincidentally looks like Ali
Better then gene Tunney?🤔🧢
Freddie mills wasn’t bad either
Not for his jab, he was a come forward aggressive pressure fighter. No real boxing ability.
