This is beautiful. George originally wrote All Those Years Ago for Ringo to sing. When John died, he changed some words around and dedicated it to Lennon. He then brought Paul and Ringo in to contribute to the recording.

When George sings that John "imagined it all," it's not just a reference to the song "Imagine," but that John actually started the Beatles. He invited Paul and then George to join "his band."

That's an exaggeration.......George was nearly 15 at that time (in late 1957) and John had just turned 17. There was two years and four months between them. Having said that, John was a mature teenager and George still just a lad.

George also did a great song about the Beatles called "When We Was Fab." The official video has appearances by Ringo Starr, Jeff Lynne and Elton John. There is someone in a walrus suit playing bass. George said that it was Paul. Paul later clarified that he wasn't able to be in the video so he suggested they put someone in a walrus suit and say that it was him.

I believe at the time of John’s death he and George were not on the best terms. Like most people that lose a loved one when they are not speaking there can be a great feeling of guilt for the one still living. I’m sure George wishes he could have cleared things up with John. I bet the song was therapeutic for George. It also brought the three living Beatles together as Paul and Ringo performed on the song.

I think it's a skiffle beat. Skiffle was the predominate musical style right after the war and the Beatles (Quarrymen) were steeped in it. They all grew up in close proximity to each other so it shouldn't be surprising that their phrasing etc. are similar to each other.

Paul’s tribute to John is a very touching song called “Here Today”. I imagine you will get to it one of these days. Elton John’s “Empty Garden” is another beautiful message to John. I think George tried to make this as upbeat as possible in spite of the subject. Actually, many years later, George was assaulted, in his own home, by a crazed fan. I believe his wife, Olivia, helped him fight off the attacker. It’s so horrifying that people like the Beatles become the objects of lunacy and twisted minds after giving so much of their nervous systems for the world to enjoy. It’s heartbreaking and frustrating.

Another great Lennon tribute is Elton John's Empty Garden. I've been knocking, but no one answers.

  • @PeterBuwen

    Thank you, Harri!
Having previously recorded the music for the song, Harrison tailored the lyrics to serve as a personal tribute to his former Beatles bandmate John Lennon, following the latter's murder in 1980. Ringo Starr is featured on drums, and Paul McCartney (along with his Wings bandmates Linda McCartney and Denny Laine) overdubbed backing vocals onto the basic track.
It's the first time since the end of the Beatles for the three (Paul, Geaorge, Ringo) to play together on a record.
The next time was only 1993 on 'Free as a bird'.
I love George Harrison because of his spirituality and his honest sentiments.

In the 1980s, when compiling a comppilation of "Beatles" songs, George Martin did some tweakings of the mixes. He didn't try to get permission from the other three because it was so difficult to get through their security. But who could be so trusted to do it if not George Martin.

John was 2 1/2 years older than George. When you’re a kid, that seems like a big difference and relatively speaking, it is. So George looked up to him as an older brother sort of.

I love your introduction....I am stumbling, first time here, permission to come aboard captain:)
I love you choice because, this song reminds me of being in Australia aged 14, and watching cricket in 1981
Thank you for the memories (some of which I hated). But life is about the good and bad, love and hate, all those years ago

It's sad that George and John where never able to patch up there differences but it was up to George and I think he realized it to late unlike Paul who even at there worst witch was bad they still had very deep feelings for each other in the early days John would refer to George as the kid or the half beatle George said he didn't feel like he took any inspiration from John and Paul and John was livid he said how could he not be inspired by to musical geniuses and when George wrote this and had Ringo and Paul on it it was his way of apologizing to John with the remaining beatles there.

Harri. I love your reactions…maybe it DOES have something to do with Harri! I’m glad you said you think John and George’s voices sounded alike. I’ve always thought the same thing. Great tribute song to John from my favorite artist ever, George Harrison:-) Sadly, George too suffered from an attack of tremendous violence which his son and wife believe triggered a return of the lung cancer he died of a few years later. If you ever come across Dhani Harrison’s account of the knife attack, you’ll be shocked at just how close George and Olivia were to being murdered in their own home. It’s quite harrowing. George tried to downplay it at the time but it must have been really traumatic. Sometimes the violence in this old world can be terribly depressing.

I was also saying the same about the similarity of their voices, I love them both, of course also Paul's but I have some preference for John's and George's maybe at the same level.

Ringo is on drums and Paul is on bass and backup vocals for this.

Regarding what you say at about 7:15 -
I left a comment about George being badly attacked in his home in 1999. It was deleted for some reason (maybe my description of his injuries was too graphic!). His injuries were much worse than was made public, initially. Olivia, his wife, came to his rescue with a fire poker.

Very humble man, you're right. And when the time came for George, his dear friend Ringo also paid tribute to him with a beautiful song, great if you can take it into account for a future reaction. I also relate to your comment about the similarity with John's voice, to me John sounds very emotional and moving when singing soft songs to the point to make you shed a tear, and George sounds very peaceful and expressive with a very touching voice, kind of similar but different at the same time.

Actually. George had a fear of the crowds and the possiblity of violence directed towards them when they first came to America. And you can watch some of the old clips where the crowds were so huge the police could barely contain them. They got mobbed continuously. Its understandable. There is a tribute from Ringo Starr to George Harrison called Never Without You which includes Eric Clapton on guitar. Its really good. Check it out.
