Interestingly, he actually wrote it originally for Ringo before John was killed (they even recorded a version of it). After John's death, he reworked the lyrics to make it a tribute to John.

It was always a tribute to John even before the murder. George had basically finished the track by the time of john's death. In light of the news he reworked the lyrics and recorded a new vocal. He also invited Paul to do backing vocals. Ringo was already on the original music track.

It's crazy to think that John was only 40 when he passed. George was a great artist in his own right and definitely needs more love and appreciation. Even though The Beatles split up many years ago and pursued other interests, they really did care about each other the same way brothers do. The song was a great tribute to John by George. Ringo and Paul are the only two still left .

George wrote this song for John after he'd been murdered. He had lived with times of feeling very nervous about safety, & later his fears were realized. A guy broke in to Friar Park (his home), in the middle of the night, & both George and Olivia were involved in a horrific fight against this guy. George had things going in & out of his leg I believe, & collapsed lung, all kinds of awful injuries. He was already fighting cancer when this happened, so it was completely horrifying.
I'd recommend checking out "Isn't it a Pity", "Beware of Darkness"and TONS more! George was HORRIFICALLY UNDERAPPRECIATED in the Beatles, & so he was glad to be able to finally get some of his enormous stockpile of incredible music released!!
He seemed SOOOO much happier when he handpicked friends to become the Traveling Wilburies! They put out some incredible songs as well. Sadly, only Jeff Lynne and Bob Dylan are still alive.

You need to watch those in that order. I highly recommend A Hard Days Night out of all of them as it helps you understand Beatlemania in a fun way, the pressures of being the young new Beatles under pressure to perform and tour all the time. This was about the assassination of John Lennon on DEC 8 1980, by a crazed fan in NYC. George wrote this tribute song. Paul wrote on later called Here Today. Ringo did write one eventually for George in 2003 called Never Without You. George wrote one about the Beatles in 1987 called When We was Fab. You may want to check all those out.

Paul wrote and released a tribute to John too - "Here Today," on his album, 'Tug of War.' Also, a bit more obscure perhaps but just as emotional, is Ringo's tribute to George called, "Never Without You." It has Eric Clapton on guitar. John wrote, "Now and Then," to his dear friend, Paul. So all four Beatles have written a song about another Beatle in this way.

Three Beatles coming together to knock one more out of the park in tribute to their brother. I was little when this came out but it makes me think of being in school, the smell of crayons and glue, the classroom windows open on a fresh spring day. The lyrics were as deep as it gets but the music is so innocent and wide eyed. George's music was all about making the listener feel good. He was never trying to wow anybody, just went where the music took him with no ego slowing him down or tricking him into a wrong turn. Just listen to the guitar, it sounds like he just plugged straight into the board, no effects, no razzle dazzle, doesn't matter, it hits you right in the heart.

This was written after John was murdered, so there's no going back, but the "Threatles" (Paul, George, and Ringo) nevertheless did go back during the mid 90s by producing completed versions of "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love" using old solo demo recordings by John. And during Paul's latest concert tour, he included footage from the Beatles rooftop performance of January 30, 1969 that was for the movie "Let It Be" (and recently also included in Peter Jackson's "Get Back" documentary). Paul recreated their duet on "I've Got A Feeling" (this was another song like "A Day In The Life" where John and Paul merged two of their separate songs into one).
For the record though, "Empty Garden" by Elton John was probably the best tribute song to Lennon.

I don't think that "Here Today" is obscure. He is clearly talking about when they met and began writing songs, etc. It's very emotional. I always cry when I hear it or when Paul plays it in his concerts. He plays it at every concert, as he does "Something" in tribute to George.

@ ELIZABETH FRANCO, I don't want to sound rude or mean, but if you see this, could you kindly remove John's killer's name from your post? We TRUE fans NEVER mention his name because it just gives him the notoriety and fame that he wanted by killing John. We don't even like him being referred to as a "fan" TRUE fans DON'T go out and kill or hurt the person they are supposedly a fan of. Just call him a crazy man. He deserves to not HAVE a name. THANKS

In 2007, the Beatles became the first band to feature on a series of UK postage stamps issued by the Royal Mail.
In 1985, Michael Jackson purchased ATV for a reported $47.5 million. The acquisition gave him control over the publishing rights to more than 200 Beatles songs, as well as 40,000 other copyrights.
The Beatles began in 1957, when John Lennon formed a skiffle group with his friends called the Quarrymen. The band underwent many name and membership changes, culminating in 1962 with the famous line-up of Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. After the Beatles disbanded in 1970, each of the four members went on to have success, both as solo acts and with their own groups. Although Lennon died in 1980, the remaining Beatles re-united in 1994 to record new songs for the Anthology project. Since Harrison's death in 2001, the two remaining members have not reunited as the Beatles.

THANKFULLY, Michael Jackson's estate no longer owns the Beatles' catalogue, Sony had control over it, but in 2017 the rights reverted back to the songwriters (Lennon and McCartney and the Beatles 's songs that were written by George) SO now the rights to the Beatles catalogue belong to Paul McCartney.

Wow, I never saw this before. Wonderful tribute to John. It's also somewhat ironic as George seemed disgruntled after the Beatles broke up often downplaying the importance and weight of their impact. It was understandable as he was frustrated with not being able to get his work on Beatles records. As the saying goes, George had the grand misfortune of being an excellent songwriter in a band with the two best.

This is tribute to John Lennon, who was shot and killed the year before. Harrison remained friends with Lennon after The Beatles broke up.
In an interview after John Lennon was shot, George said that he originally had written most of the lyrics for Ringo, but with Lennon's assassination, he rewrote the lyrics and told of how he looked up to John. >>
Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney played on this along with Denny Laine from McCartney's band Wings.
Long time Beatle producer George Martin produced this for Harrison. Geoff Emerick, one of The Beatles sound engineers, also had a hand in this tune. >>
In Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards, Al Kooper gives an eye-witness account of George Harrison's reaction to hearing the news that John Lennon had been shot: "George was in the kitchen, white as a sheet, real shook up. We all had breakfast. He took calls from Paul and Yoko, which actually seemed to help his spirit, and then we went into the studio and started the day's work. Ray and I kept George's wine glass full all day..." Working til midnight, some of the work from this session ended up on the album Somewhere in England.

George originally wrote this in 1980 for Ringo, as a look back at his Beatle days. But Ringo demurred, he said it wasn't in his key and besides he had already recorded a similar song (written by John) in 1973 called "I'm The Greatest". So George gave Ringo a different song ("Wrack My Brain"). After John was killed, George re-wrote the lyrics as a tribute to John. He kept Ringo's previous recorded drum track and got Paul to sing backup. It was released in March of 1981.
