Camping in a Forest in Heavy Rain - putting my bivvy bag to the test in challenging conditions

  • Thanks for joining me on this rainy adventure. It was a gruelling walk through heavy rain to reach the gorgeous spot where I set up camp. It rained lightly, poured heavily, eased off, rained hard, rained softly, rained gently, rained with dark clouds and rained with the sun. It was a very very wet camp. This was the perfect test for my RAB Hyperlite Storm Bivvy bag. I set it out in the rain, out from under cover and really put it through it's paces.
    This area in the Lewis Pass in New Zealand was lovely to explore. I took a walk in the evening and the morning to showcase the lovely area around camp.
    A tarp and bivvy camp in heavy rain was not the ideal choice to bring Indi along, and this is Kiwi bird country so she was not able to join me. She will be back with me really soon, exploring the hills and valleys of New Zealand.
    I really hope you enjoy coming along.
    Thank you so much to everyone that supports me.
    See you on the next adventure,
    Cathy

    What a beautiful place to camp! It would be a bucket list event for me to be able to camp in NZ. My son just returned from 2 weeks of camping in NZ and keeps filling my ears with his stories of the beauty of NZ. As far as the bivy goes, I would recommend the USGI goretex bivy. I've used it in the rain with no problems. I think you were right about the condensation. Be that as it may, from my experience, with any fabric, if there's any pooling, you will eventually have seeping. For that reason, It's a good idea to prevent any potential where water can pool on the fabric.

    That location has a beautiful mossy carpet. Seems to be lots of great alpine camping potential in Lewis pass area I have it on my list to try some out sometime. Such great wilderness so close to good road access. Great you share some of your wayfinding and your reasoning behind things - you know what you are doing! This is very educational. We want people to get into this kind of thing but not get lost or have a miserable time.

    • @adventureot
      @adventureot  Před 4 měsíci +1

      The Kiwi is a rare and very shy bird. I have seen a few in the wild, but never when I have been filming for YT. If I ever do see one you'll know about it as i'll be quietly squealing with delight. I had to look back at the video to see which trees you mean. I am thinking you are referring to the feathery looking green stuff on the trees around camp. Those trees are New Zealand Beech, and the feathery stuff is Usnea, Old Man's Beard Lichen.

    Brilliant as usual, watching it’s almost like being there.
    Couple of questions if you get time.
    On base layers should they be tight or slightly loose to trap air.
    Do you ever wear waterproof socks, are they any good. My husband’s asking, as he goes fishing in all weathers.
    Look forward to your next venture.

    • @adventureot
      @adventureot  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Thanks Joyce. Two very good questions. It's my understanding that your base layer (especially if it is woollen) should be 'contact' tight, so close fitting against your skin. This is to endure that it can wick away any moisture (in the case of wool), and no cold air can move into that space between your skin and the fabric. I have never worn waterproof socks but funny enough I was just looking into them the other day. I'll have to reserve my comments or judgement until I've given them a go. If I do I'll chat about them in a video. Have a lovely day.

      @adventureot  Před 5 měsíci

      Hmm, Weliington boots are good in theory but on long slippery wet walks like this I find they don't have enough tread, my feet get cold in them, and they aren't breathable, which means heat and moisture builds up, and along with friction, results in terrible blisters... for me anyway. Others might find them useful, but my feet don't agree with them.

      yes, but I guess you have to be able to breath inside them so there has to be some sort of ventilation, and that is a potential point of entry for water.
