This channel is my way to share the joy of camping, wild camping, camping in the rain, solo camping, and camping with dogs. Join me (and sometimes my dog Indi) for some amazing outdoor adventures in the beautiful, wild, New Zealand bush, mountains, rivers and coast. Being outdoors makes me feel alive. I love hiking to remote spots and the adventure of solo camping in the wilderness. I can think of nothing better than relaxing to the sound of rain on my tent, or the sight of a warm fire on a freezing cold night. The OT in AdventureOT stands for 'outdoor therapy' because that is what adventure in the outdoors is for me. My desire is to share the joy of the outdoors with you. I hope you will enjoy coming along.
Camping Alongside a Frozen lake - the HARDEST place to light a fire
For this adventurous solo hike and camp, Indi and I are in the Klondyke Valley in the South Island of New Zealand. It is mid winter, and although the weather is mild, we are up at 4000ft/1200m and the ground and lakes are frozen. Lighting a fire in these conditions in wet NZ forest is so so hard, as I was to discover. I came to this trip armed with tips and tricks for getting a fire going in wet bush, and had varying success.
This place is incredibly beautiful, with wet green moss covering the old forest, rivers and streams running through the valley, and lots of small tarns, some frozen, peppering the basin at the head of the valley.
In the background was the sound of the waterfall, just to top it all off.

You should do a couple of days trips walking into spots you want to go winter camping at and only carry in the bare necessities and the rest of your load being a pack full of fire wood the same weight as what you carry in on a normal camping trip and stash it in the bush covered in plastic so it can't get wet then you'll have wood when you go camping next
Yip It has crossed my mind. A ridiculously impractical, expensive and time consuming option, but an option none the less. My brain has gone there……For a micro split second. 😂 better option is probably cook on gas and wrap up warm.

You load your fire up way too much for what it's sitting in it 1 won't burn because your starving it and 2 the moss on it is wet so it won't burn well if you keep starving the fire and you will go through more wood then you need too you also don't need to use fire staters with that tonne of new paper you used

Why do you make the fire so far from your tent love your dog.
I think I mentioned it in the video. Someone had already lit one there before so I used the same spot to reduce the number of scorched patches on the ground. I t was easy enough to move my seat there to sit around it, and reduced the risk of embers on the tent 😊👍

Youve done the chimney wrong its not supposed to be how you did it you need to roll it up length ways the same as if your rolling it away for storage dont do it on the angle roll like you did because the wind will blow it open and smoke will leak out watch lone wolf camping channel you can see how he does it the correct way youll enjoy his channel hundred percent guarantee im in new Zealand too and do allt of hot tent camping but i use temu hot tent and wood stove theyre way better also cheaper too
Thanks. Yes I got a lot of that same advice about the rolling of the chimney early on. I’ve perfected it now. It rolled nice and easily on my last hot tent camp. Yes Lone Wolf does some good stuff on his channel. That’s great you get out hot tent camping. If you are happy to share I’d love to know where you go. I find it really really hard to find suitable places in the SI where it complies with fire lighting rules. Would love more options. Perhaps a better 4wd to get me into the back blocks

Thanks, the important part is whether people like the video. I never want products to create too much ‘noise’ but on this occasion my whole change of plan was because of it, so it did by default 😣. I don’t mean to promote products, just to use them and let people know what I think. You have a good point 😂 although I expect consumers will get stoves that light. Thanks. I’m lucky where I live and where I camp. There is not a lot of things to be scared of. Plenty of things to entertain an over active imagination, but not real risks.

I love your camping trips with Indy! I'm disabled and can't do back country hikes anymore, but still love car camping with family. Haven't camped much the past few years due to cancer treatments. I'm in remission now for 3 years! Can take short walks with a walking stick or trekking poles.

I love camping in nice weather when I am going with friends or family. On my own, and for the channel, I love camping in more challenging conditions. It makes it more fun, adventurous, and I always get places to myself. Yay!!

In driving rain, and without rain trousers, shorts at times, can be a better option than soaked clingy lower pants. As I often tell my Swiss Nordic Walking Colleagues, "Skin is waterproof .. it's the clothing that gets wet." 😁.

This video was from a while back (Dec 2023) and although I was expecting some rain I wasn't expecting this. It was quite something.
Ha ha, I've dealt with similar conditions over years, but not as often as you...!😄👊 This just got me googling the yearly rainfall comparison between the UK & ZL... Seems very similar, (but think NZ slightly more) although much depends on the area... The Lake District & Scottish Highlands rank highest in UK & Milford Sound was stated as being the wettest inhabited place in New Zealand, and one of the wettest places in the world...!😯☔ Also, apparently NZ winters are shorter, warmer & brighter🌤️ than in the UK...?🤔 I'm really not fond of winters, not so much the cold or wet, it's just so dark for so long...😔 It's supposed to be Summertime here now 🌅⛱️ But I'm not convinced...!🤣
I've heard our weather is very similar. Usually where I am winters are cold and crisp, with frosts in the morning, but warmer, sunny, clear weather through the day. This year it just feels damp all the time. Yuck. I would rather honest cold and then a good clear break. Although it is very wet here at the moment we aren't getting this bog snow dumps or rainstorms (where I am) just drizzle and mist.
