Tarp Camping in the Rain with my Dog (cozy warm campfire)

- This was a rainy camp up in the mountains. I knew it was forecasted and headed out with Indi (my collie lab x) to enjoy the sound and sight of the rain. There is nothing better than having a cosy camp set up, a warm fire, and being able to listen to the rain on the tarp as you cook a delicious meal.
I did not bring a tent, instead zipped two sleeping bags together to share Indi's body heat, a necessity in these cold conditions, with overnight snow falling on the mountains, and a light dusting down at camp.
This is the South Island of New Zealand, where we are heading in to summer. We still have some chilly weather though, but that never stops me.

What a treat to have your video drop down on a Friday evening here in the States. Can’t think of a better way to spend some of my beginning weekend time than with one of my favorite CZcams people! Loved the video! I especially loved watching Indi! She made my heart happy. Three months ago I had to put my Lab mix to sleep and I miss him so. Like Indi, he was my hiking and camping buddy. He was 14 and went into renal failure. He was that special dog one has in a lifetime. So many of Indi’s mannerisms are like Lincoln’s. Treasure your trips with her! Thanks again for sharing with us!

👍👍👍 .. nice, very nice .. and pretty well organised too and with some useful setup tips thrown in for good measure 😊.
That area (looking through unfocused eyes) reminds me very much of an area in KZN (Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa) .. between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, known as 'The Valley of a Thousand Hills' .. beautiful.
Instant Mash ('Smash') .. never disappoints .. a great old faithful.
Mulled Wine .. known here in Switzerland as 'Gluhwein'. I like carrying in a little SS Hip Flask. A 'glug' added to a mug of strong, black unsweetened coffee together with a pinch of salt gives the coffee character 😁. Although, Jack Daniels / Jim Bean Honey Whisky is my favourite (when the budget allows 😏).
Hot Chocolate .. love it .. BUT .. sometimes it plays 'silly b*ggers' with the tum 💤 😳 🏃♂️ .. 😁. Cold evenings, I have latched onto those little 'Bouillon Cubes' (Beef - Chicken - Vegetable). Half a cube in an insulated mug of boiling water .. a great comforter. Together, sitting in front of a cozy little fire, staring into the dancing flames and coals .. great company.
Snow .. I had my first in the season .. out walking the little Malti-Poo about two weeks past. ONE flake floating down gently in my upturned hand. That was it! Temps here in Northern Switzerland up against the Rhine are now down to freezing and with snow (🤞) finally forecast towards the end of the week. I love Winter and snow.
Dog in Bed. A non-negotiable 😁. The Malti-Poo 💕, she has shared the bed from before 7 weeks of age. We got her at six weeks .. 'tried' having her sleep in her own bed .. failed miserably and before the week was over .. 😏.

he he, yes the rain does suck when you are keen on the views, or want a nice stop on a hill side for lunch, or enjoy dry clothes (lol - who wouldn't want those things?), but I have to say that it is wonderful when you are snug as a bug under cover with a hot coffee in hand. If only I could control the weather I would walk in with gorgeous weather, set up as it changes, enjoy heavy rain in the evening and overnight, and would wake to a dry cloudless sunrise. Will definitely be bringing you some shorts and t-shirt trips soon, so you can anticipate your own summer coming while you get through winter.

It is amazing how skillful you are at making a fire with wet wood. Also the way you set up a tarp, where did you learn all your skills? Or are you self taught? You truly deserve to get to a million subscribers.

Watching you and other New Zealand campers (and in much of this video), I sometimes hear a bird call with a very musical sound (like someone playing a flute), I wander if you can tell me what that bird is. Great video cheers!

That’s a DD Hammock Superlight 3mx2.9m. Great little tarp for its weight but I do get drips of rain tracking underneath from the guyline tie down points (just fyi). Mulled wine is just red white be and a sneaky premix syrup 🤭 but I usually add orange peel, cinnamon sticks and cloves to it 👍

I have to add another comment to your video. I had no idea that New Zealand was having a “Bird of the Century” vote going on. Even the comedian John Oliver has gotten involved and then I saw a story about it from ABC Australia. My goodness! Are you voting? Care to share? LOL!
lol, I am going to be completely honest here.... neither did I. I had to google it. I absolutely adore our tiny native birds, our larger birds are showy and get the attention (lol) but we have some adorable small birds. The Rifleman gets my vote for being the smallest and most beautiful, but in the end I would have to go with my little buddy, the South Island Robin, because at least one always follows me along on my walks at some stage. They are so inquisitive and sweet.

That is a nice name,stay safe,I like watching all the videos on camping,it is nice when a good day,but it does not be to nice when it is pouring rain,we are getting plenty of rain here,in next few weeks we are in for a fall of snow.We are getting a lot of storms in the line of heavy rain and windy,south of Ireland get the worst of the storms.Its just storm after storm and more to come for the rest of year.
