Oh my....... For some reason my work email had become the default...... What a convoluted way to reset it back to open my gmail account as the default. THANK YOU for this video, I'm now back to my personal email as the default. Appreciate you!

Today is 6/28/24 and under the Additional Permissions dropdown, its now "Protocol Handlers". When I was trying to quickly follow along, I initially missed that. Google is so unnecessarily confusing sometimes. I'm guessing some programmer was bored and felt like changing something to kill time and/or prove their worth.
THANK YOU! One should not have to set up Apple's Mail program just to be able to access the preferences in there, *just to be able to tell it to NOT USE THAT APP* when clicking on a mailto link! But even when I thought that was the only way to set my mail default and I tried just going through the motions to get it out of the way, the Mail app wouldn't even let me do that - when I tried to set up a mail account in there, the Mail app just went into an endless spin. I'm glad, because it forced me to search again for a way to do this just with the web browser (I was SURE that was possible, but couldn't find it!). So... THANK YOU AGAIN.
9/3/2023: Update on my earlier question, re compatible with word. G mail is not compatible with Word via the 'File Share' route. Happy to hear alternatives. Ian Smith
FYI - I didn't need to do anything with the default mac mail to get this to work. I only made the change in Chrome and it worked. I've never once opened my mail app :)
Google has since changed many of these steps/have different wording steps etc.. so, thanks but this is outdated. I moved from Google to Apple for different reasons, but this is one of them.. how Google drastically changes things very abruptly and has driven me crazy over many years
Sorry, brand new with mac. I was not able to make it past 48 seconds where you got into mail. I think it best to give this mac to my son and go back to a PC.

I just skipped to 2:55 and it worked for me. I did not have to do this part "Signing into Apple Mail app" & "Setting default email reader in Apple Mail preferences"
This is a huge help. Would you please create an update for Google Chrome in macOS? My address bar does not have the symbol enabling the option to allow the sites to ask to handle protocols. The formatting of the "Handlers" section in "Settings" in Google Chrome appears differently and the fact that changing mail.google.com to "Default" in the "Handlers" section of "Settings" would accomplish this goal without having to change anything in Gmail.com. Thank you.

In chrome you just need to open gmail and click on the handlers sign that appear in the address bar
